In this video I am going to give you my top 5 picks for a reliable car for under $1500. We are not going to be concerned with looks, 0-60 times, or even MPG this video is about RELIABILITY only. So basically I am going to cover cars that are cheap yet have no major or commonly know engine or transmission issues.

UPDATE: So as some have mentioned the 6th gen Honda Transmissions have a high defective rate, especially for the V6 model. The #2 suggestion in my video is for the 4 cylinder models but they too have issues with the Automatic Transmissions, especially after 2000. So to clarify you should either get a manual or a 5th gen Accord with an Auto. The rest of the list is perfect as described, no matter what goes on in the comments section :-)

Geo Prizm for the win! However the Toyota 1.6/1.8 DOHC engines are indeed interference. Also they tend to develop obscene oil burning issues by 200k miles due to sticky piston rings if synthetic oil was not used. Still one of my favorite cars! Toyota 3.0 and 3.4 DOHC V6 are more bomb-proof :)

Ratchets And Wrenches I had a 1998 accord with the V6. When the transmission issue was diagnosed the car had 100,000 miles on it. It ran for another 133,000 miles before it really acted up.

Watched your video and it is really good - I agree with your addendum. I owned two V6 Honda (an Acura TL and Accord) and watched as I lost a transmission on both before reaching 60,000 miles. One of the worst cars I owned. Otherwise, that list is excellent! I ironically own a 2006 Saab 9-3 and the powertrain is original with a young 134,000 on it. Should be able to keep it for 300,000 if I want.

These cars are too outdated nowadays. When the video was made it was good prices. But nowadays you should only get these 90s car for 1000max. If your spending $1500 then get at least a 2003 car. That’s what I do.
@gorkyd7912
@gorkyd7912 5 лет назад
@@jasinbiggs7189 Maybe in the rust belt. There's still plenty of 90s cars with less than 200k for $2000 and less that are worth every penny. They didn't get better in the 2000s, they started getting worse in the 2010s in terms of repair costs.

Lol anytime you get rear ended I suggest you go to the hospital to have it checked out. A lawyer would be good also but if not at least the medical folks will allow you get a nice settlement offer which I also suggest turning down. Never take the first offer as you can usually get them to make a better offer. Also you dont have to settle on any offers.

Previous owner maintenance is as important or maybe even more important than make/model (they manufacturer hasn't touched the car since day 1, and some owners destroy great cars). You'll stack the odds in your favor by getting one from this list, but don't be fooled by buying a neglected one.

In my opinion the grand marquis is a better choice than the crown victoria. You get grandpa's car with a glove box full of oil change and tune up receipts, and it's never been abused or gone on high speed pursuits. Yes, fleet vehicles are well maintained, but regularly abused. You also get Lincoln luxury in a crown vic style body. I paid $650. for mine 3 years ago. Did tires and brakes, and that's it. Either way, you got it right that a full size ford is (in my opinion) THE best deal out there. Only trucks are made body- on -frame these days, and these Ford's are the last cars to be manufactured in this strong manner.

My wife has a 2001 Toyota Camry with 384xxx and still runs fine. Has other issues, like plastic breaking inside the cabin, it eats inside door handles. The stereo died a 100,xxx miles back, but no loss, we like silence. The engine has been run 2quarts low several times because it leaks in 3or4 places. The clear coat, paint, primer, and the assembly line cuss words have all peeled off to show a world map of Narnia , and the front seats are worn to springs. But it always starts and just goes on. 3 timing belts, 1 alternator, and a water pump because the housing broke. Regular oil changes and new plugs and wires a couple of times. That's been it. She looks like rolling crap, but I'm not trading her off till I hit 500,000 miles. Then maybe.

Suzuki Samurai XJ (1986 & 87) Toyota Echo (all years) Scion xA & xB (2004 & 2005) Both the Echo &Scions were made by Toyota and had the same engine... which is known to run well up in a 300K mile lifespan. As for the Suzuki Samuri, good luck trying to find anyone willing to sell theirs! It has manually engaged 4wheel drive. In the 2wd mode I got 25/32mpg. In 4wd, I got 15- 20. This vehicle was like a very small Jeep Wrangler (roll bar came standard and dispute Jeep propaganda about roll over, I never dumped it), so a lot depended on the off road terrain. Still it was fun all day long! It was an excellent garage mate for my Honda VF700s Sabre motocycle...but that's another story...think precursor to the Suzuki Strom "adventure bike."

Thank you for your interesting and informative video!! I recently bought a 2001 Honda Civic LX with a manual transmission which is GREAT FOR ME with because only 84k miles on it and in beautiful condition, I've been driving manual since 1971 (1959 VW BUG), and since then I've owned more than 8 cars with manual transmissions. I kept my 1985 VW Cabriolet for more than 15 years! It had 100k miles when I bought it in 1995, I did spend a little on it during that time (redid front suspension) when I first got it and changed the timing belt but other than that I really don't remember doing much else besides normal maintenance (20-50) Castrol GTX oil!! The odometer broke at 196k but drove it for about 6 or so years after that so I have NO IDEA how many miles I had on that car when I sold it (shouldn't have) mom didn't like the idea I was driving such a OLD CAR but it STILL RAN GREAT, good gas mileage, performance, didn't leak or burn oil!!! Oh yeah, it was all those miles on the SAME CLUTCH, I know how to use a clutch PROPERLY!!! SO what do you think of the 2001 Honda Civic LX? It's PARKED NOW because since it's at 84k miles, I'm getting the cam belt changed because it is an INTERFERENCE ENGINE, and I have a BETER car 2002 Ford Focus ZX5 with a manual transmission as well but it just turned 211k miles but run strong and economical but it's a little BEAT UP ESPECIALLY the interior but I DON'T CARE, IT RUNS and FUN to DRIVE!!!! 😮😮😊😊

For $1500 and good condition, I would look for a 25-30 year old Toyota or Honda. The main issue is how hard it will be to find one though. Even in good condition, a 25-30 year old Toyota or Honda can easily sell for over $2000. A used car dealer I know was able to sell a 1988 Toyota Camry v4 for $1800.

A quick real world eval of the Camry XLE 3.0L 6cyl. Purchased April 2018 254000 miles. No kidding mpg results. city/34, highway/42. leaks miniscule oil from rear valve cover and pwr steering pump, no burning oil. some suspension groans fore and aft and occasional bottom outs on big bumps or gnarly potholes. absolutely no complaints over 1.5 yr ownership. major mech issue both cbs joints replaced. I couldn't believe the mpg performance the first month of usage. I thought it was a fluke. I still get the same mpg numbers. I recommend the 1996 gen 3 Camry XLE 3.0L without hesitation.

We own right now a 2007 Dodge Caliber, 4 cylinder engine. It leaks oil badly. My husband has to constantly, every day, put at least 1/2 quart of oil before we can go anywhere. Is this car worth fixing or should I start looking? I know very little about these things. Our car looks very nice and gets good gas mileage, but it has nearly 140K miles on it. Easy to handle. Fun to drive and has been reliable. It had only a couple problems over the years and these were fixed. Where should we go to get the oil fixed? We live at the Jersey Shore in Ocean County. I take my friend, who is 93, to the store a couple times a week and she gives me a few dollars for gas. I have a perfect driving record. Oh well, I guess you didn't have to know all this. Sorry. One more thing. Our Caliber is a preowned car which had about 96K miles on it when we purchased it in 2016. The internet price was listed at $5,000. They charged us $7,000! At a well known dealer here. We ran up thousands of miles because every day I had to take my husband to work and pick him up daily from work. We have no children so I had to take him. He never missed work, only when he was either very ill, or had had a seizure. People really liked him wherever he went. He's not allowed to have a license due to epilepsy. We would be lost without a car.

I just bought a 98 corolla ce and it runs perfect. My ex neighbor and I worked at a job together and he would give me rides to work since we live 2 streets away now. He would always tell me it’s for sale and for me he’ll sell it for 500-800 always changing the price everyday on our way to work and back lol. Fast forward 3 month and I quit that job. I messaged him how much he wanted and he said $659.99. I was like okay deal I’ll give you the money when I come back from nc. He messaged in a group chat my cousins husband and his brother and a bunch of my family guy members are in saying 650 and you can drive it today. Lmao my cousins brother in law just came from Mexico and he messaged him saying he’ll give him the $1500 he was asking for and he was like no i tried selling it to you and my cousin and both of you didn’t want it and I already made a deal.

Re: 1995-2005 Camry's: If you look up Toyota Camry on Wikipedia you'll find all the specs for all the Camry models. That source says that, beginning in 2002 the Camry did not come with a 2.2L engine, only a 2.4L. So, when you recommend Camry's all the way up to 2005, you are pointing people to a different engine than the one you are praising. And, if you look further on the Web, you'll find that the 2.4L engine had some issues, as even you point out in your video on Toyota's to avoid.

Unfortunately, I have to disagree with the #2 choice. I work on Honda's for a living and the bad automatic transmissions in the 6th gen accords keep me in business. They fail, even if properly maintained, at about 150K miles. DONT BOTHER REPLACING THE DAMNED SOLENOIDS, THAT"S NOT YOUR PROBLEM, THE TRANSMISSION IS JUNK!! For $1500 I'd go with the 94-97 accord or any Civic ever made.

I'd have to say I see a lot of them for sale with 250,000 miles; 300,000 miles, 350,000 miles. SO either the transmission is super cheap and easy to swap out or there's a way to properly maintain the car and drive a long distance. Personally I traded a 99 Honda Accord V6 with 253,000 miles and sold a 98 Accord 2.3 200,000 miles. I still see them driving around. @RealHankShill
@RealHankShill 6 лет назад
Most Subaru "head gasket issues" are a symptom, of a dirty AF coolant system. How they are designed, they can get an air lock around the heater core, which prevents the tstat from opening as it never gets the hot coolant. Flushing your coolant system and filling with proper coolant will prevent all these issues from occurring. They are sensitive to overheating which is how the headgaskets get blown so easy. It is an easy fix, but if you dont flush your heater core, and fix the reason for the overheating, then it will blow again. You can create another bypass around the heater core to entirely prevent this problem from ever happening as well. You can buy Subaru's with blown head gaskets, flush the coolant system, and have a great running car because the head gasket was actually fine.

the car is still running like a top, the livery trade was putting 500K on Lincoln Town Cars, but I also am sure they had regular service. Your cousin is lucky, I had a Honda Civic some years back and didn't like it at all, actually, having owned one, I feel sorry for anyone who drove one of those 730K. It was the most uncomfortable car I ever owned. Honestly, I get tired of a car after 6 or 7 years, I really don't want to drive any car that long. My daughter has her aunts old Corolla, I think its a 2003, with about 300K on it, and yes its still running , but she has also had lots of things go out on it like the axel , she was just lucky when it went out she was on a residential street and not the Freeway, she keeps it because its a 5 sp and you cannot find those anymore

Mississippi Reject that's some rampat Honda fanboyism. They're good reliable cars but certainly not easily million mile worthy. Especially with the automatic transmission and igniton issues they were plagued with. Saying domestic card are trash proves your lackluster knowledge.

Hondas have lots of transmission issues, they have for years, good luck with yours, I hated mine and I seriously doubt you will get a million miles, its just a car,

Anybody that has a nice car should have a junker Toyota as a back up. Because that Toyota is never going to fail you lol.

Immortalkalashnikov I had Camrys. 96 & 01...the 96 ran great but the right window motor went out. I've seen it multiple times. The 01 transmission went out which I've also heard happens a lot.

I've never had a transmission go out on a Toyota. My daily driver is a 03 Tundra with 231,000 miles on it. Original everything. Even the brake fluid is original. The 99 Corollas transmission never went out either.

Had a 2004 crown vic. Put 300,000 miles on it before it got hot and poped a freeze plug. Not that big of an issue but it was time to move on after that. I love those cars. I've owned 3

Mississippi Reject Let's talk about them Honda burnouts and drifts.... Ah, sorry, you can't because ain't no RWD with Limited-Slip diff like in a Vic. Plus, that Modular V8 on the Crown Vic sounds much better than your little Toys R Us Civic. Same for the Accord, and Camry, had both, but boy you can't compare them to the handling and blast that you are having while driving a good old Police Interceptor. Especially mine with a muffler delete and Cold air intake. Ah, and almost forgot, ain't nobody gon' see your Camry in their rear-view mirror, say "Shit" and hit the brakes XDDDDD And I can't help but tell you that since I bought it for like 6 months now, all I had to do as a "repair" was an oil change
