I really appreciated that you included "The Twilight Samurai" in your list. The film is simply brilliant and highlights the superb acting of Hiroyuki Sanada which he repeated in "The Last Samurai" and the mini-series, "Shogun".

Yes, "Twilight Samurai" is a surprisingly good movie. Its not a typical samurai film. There is not much fighting, its more a family drama, but very interesting and touching. This is one of the movies, that someone is not able to forget, even many years later.

Akira Kurosawa’s *Seven Samurai* is a masterpiece! His *Ran* is a visual feast and *Throne of Blood* is a great adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

Captain Algren (Tom Cruise) isn't the Last Samurai, Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe) is. Like Chingachgook in Last of the Mohicans, just because he's not the main protagonist doesn't mean the story isn't about him.

Seven samurai is number 1, then Sanjiro & yojimbo tied in 2nd, throne of blood , the hidden fortress, kagemusha, Rashomon 3rd , all the Rurouni Kenshin movies next then twilight samurai, Hari Kari. You also haven't listed any of the sword of vengeance series or zatoichi series of films before most of these

I disagree with your list. 🤔 well perhaps with just one, 13 Assassin, the other 4 I would pass on. I highly recommend checking out "Rurouni Kenshin." This 4 part film is one of the best samurai movies produced in the past 15-20yra.

I’ve watched them all and I can say Ran made me so sad because it is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s King Lear 😢. There’s even a modern Indian version but the father had 3 daughters who did the same to his father’s property. I really loved Twilight Samurai! The story of the Last Samurai had me conflicted because of how their feudal system worked. Beautiful story though in terms of the samurai families.

Well, Zatoichi isn´t a samurai movie; Ichi was a Yakuza, being the opposite of the notion of samurai and bushido. The samurai despised the yakuza and vice versa. Throughout the series, Ichi expressed himself several times in mocking terms towards the samurai.

@@sageofsixpathskakashi3742 I don't know what you mean by "original movie", but Zatoichi (even played by Takeshi Kitano) was always a yakuza, never a samurai. Zatoichi was a masseur (that's why he always wore his hair very short or his head shaved), so he couldn't be a samurai. A samurai, even a ronin, could not accept a supposedly humiliating job like that of a masseur. By the way, Zatoichi, the original, was played by Shintaro Katzu, between 1962-1974. Takeshi was Zatoichi in a 1989 movie, how could this be "an original"? And, please, don´t confuse swordsman with samurai.

'Harakiri 1962' is the name you're looking for. Considered by many as the best Samurai movie ever made. I couldn't agred more. I felt sad for those who've never seen it.

Your list is ok. 13 Assassins and The 7 Samurai was good but as a top 5, it's meh. You missed a lot of good Samurai movies. Lone Wolf and Cub series, Lady Snowblood, and pretty much all of Akira films. The Last Samurai was decent. Just too much of white washing and Samurai romanticization.

I prefer “Kagemusha” to “Ran” and I profoundly loathe the Tom Cruises movie. If it had to be made, the western hero should have been French. Tray “Sepukku” (also called ‘Hara-Kiri’ by Masaki Kobayashi 1962.

Nonsense. The samurai saves Algren, he was a drunk who was lost and had no peace within himself. The samurai were going to die out regardless of Algren or not. This “white man saves the day” BS is nonsense. Algren finally found peace so the samurai life gave that to him. Analyze critically. Btw I’m Asian, not white.

i think it is the best new historical tv show since the last kingdom came out, i really hope production studios look at Shogun and understand that audiences really want historically authentic and engaging tv shows !
