For recognizing counter hits, go to practice mode, set player counter hit to random, and keep throwing out your CH launchers. ONLY DO YOUR FOLLOW UPS WHEN THE CH HAPPENS. For example, if you're playing Bryan, start with just using b1 over and over, and every time it counters, follow up with db2, 1. Do that until you can do it 100% of the time. Switch to 3+4, and do the same thing. Once you can do both, then randomly alternate between both moves and see if you can recognize CHs. Again, you should be able to recognize hits 100% of the time. This is one of the easiest things to learn that you will take with you every rank. Then learn your character's generic combos, and try to keep it simple and use the same combo that can cover all of your launchers. Honestly, you shouldn't be bothering with hard combos until you're in yellow tbh...and even in yellow you'll survive with generic combos most of the time. Also, remember to use those CH moves with full awareness that a CH could happen. Intent matters. If you can do 60 damage consistently off launchers, you'll only need to launch your opponent 2 to 3 times in a round, whatever else is missing could just be pokes and chips. There really isn't an excuse to be missing CH hits with most launchers.
I know all these things yet I'm hard stuck teal, I can never deal with spamers. If someone spams the same move over and over again, and the move is +on block, what do I do?
I already asked for the teal / green / yellow / orange / red rank replays. I won't be doing another one of those. The mistakes were already made and the videos have also been made already. If I were to do more of these types it would be purple, and royal blue ranks.
Nah nah nah. I saw pro Player knee do a super cool complicated combo that did 999 dmg. If I do complicated stuff I'll become tekken god prime. Even tho those combos only work when the planets align
@@1starfalco1 It's true tho. I'm initiate now and I go up against a plethora people that have no movement, frame knowledge, neutral game BUT MAN! can they can they rock a conversion into a meaty MAX DAMAGE ULTRA COMBO.
@@PeterYMao I'm noob. I only saw your video because i've been watching a lot of the main man SWE's videos, so you popped up in my recommended. Is that not-nice? I'm only being honest :)
When it comes to Rage Arts I actually think offline mode has a lot to answer for here. Whenever you face the computer they will almost without fail just eat the RA, which conditions new players to just throw them out expecting a chunk of damage or free win without risk or consequence. Thanks Bamco!
I wouldn't blame the computer for this. And even if the computer did do this a lot. Why doesn't the player just block and perfectly punish every time if they are used to it? That's an interesting thing to consider.
@@PeterYMao it's true. The AI in Tekken 7 is so dummed down, inexperienced players will think it'll be the same online, facing a harsh reality check when getting buried online against veterans
Yeah, I fucking hate that shit. The AI is so bad that it's really not that hard to get to Tekken God Omega in Treasure Battle. Even as a Teal or Green Rank player against human opponents.
Please dont forget to mention that Lucky Chloe's rage art is a low and you have to crouch to block and Akuma's rage art is unblockable ( *THIS TRIGGERS ME WHY IS THAT A THING* ) so the only way to avoid it is to jump back
Hello, im the biggest Sonic Fang fan in the world - aka the Steve. Thanks for including me in the video! Since sending the clips i was able to get to Jaggernaut rank and it's mostly thanks to your 101 series. I've started using more jabs, low pokes and actually learned how to combo and backdash semi-properly. For people struggling i have 2 personal tips (which were not present in this video), that helped me improve my game: 1. Learn your guaranteed hits - For example, as Steve after FLKb2 knocks the opponent down you can do FF2 for addtional damage. I wasn't aware of that so i was losing out on FREE damage and lost countless rounds because of that. 2. Movement is key to winning - after learning how to backdash, i was able to whiff punish more frequently with that glorious Sonic Fang which helped my growing frustration with the game (and myself). Again, great videos. I'll probably send more footage when the series gets to yellow ranks. Much love from Poland, Sonic Fang Guy
just saying, if he was a professor in some college the students would score more than 90% all time .. Man the way of explanation and details, huge respect bruh .
Look doing get kicks isn't bad 100% of the time. 1st you can change your timing. 2nd you can change your pattern, i.e side roll into get up kick or forward roll into get up kick. 3rd, you can wait to see a couple times whether your opponent just goes all in with reckless abandon every time, then you can probably throw it. Lastly and most important, if you get punished, floated or hit out of doing it once or twice...STOP DOING IT! That means your opponent knows how to deal with it.
I don’t know if anyone else caught this but the first Bryan player was named ‘That’s all I know’. That’s a reference to when JimmyJTran taught aris how to Taunt Jet Upper. Good taste my friend!
This is very useful, just hit grand master. I feel kinda bad tho that was at the expense of someone with twice my wins who I dragged back down to expert
I got my Gigas to Usurper in 25 wins from Fighter rank by demoting a 2200 win Josie Juggernaut to vidicator. I don't feel a lick of regret. Two reasons for that. 1, if he got there before, he could get there again. 2, if his gameplan still revolves around just doing strings...(literrally, no pokes, no combos, no nothing) then he probably will eventually learn that doing that is a road to nowhere. Though I do believe he is not going to change, which is sad. I got my Noctis to Usurper 3 weeks before at his expense too and it was the same...he just had 150 less wins.
The name of the game is risk mitigation. Jabs, d/f+1 give good frames to start mix-ups so if you can confirm that they hit then you can almost guaranteed go for a mix. Standard d/f+2 are a kinda swiss army knife in that they are used to keep out, punishment, and reads that have good pay off. However, there are ways to play around them.
@PeterYMao Duuuuudeeeee I screamed so fucking hard out of laughing when I saw that you recreated that standing 4 whiff on that recreated bryan combo (6:17)
No worries JohnnyFB no worries man. Lots of higher level players still make mistakes they had in the lower ranks cause it's something of a "old habits die hard xD"
I've done a whole video on rage arts. Here is the Akuma section of the video check the link. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oDN6teVolPU.html
@@PeterYMao Mishima brain doesn't necessarily have anything to do with Mishimas first off. It's the process of becoming stagnant. Refusing to improve or to even acknowledge a greater skill. It's kinda why these, "tutorials" if I may, are so needed. Learning and knowing how to learn are two different things. I only hope these are used by anyone who wants to get more out of a great thing because not everyone has a player or group of players helping them. Tekken can be scary alone
You don't need complicated combos. People make combos out to be the end all be all, but in fact you just need basic staple combos and you can do just fine as long as the rest of the fundamentals are there.
How is it I know all of these and practice all these and next to never drop combos and have mastered kbd and all my key moves and launchers on both p1 and p2. And I am still only expert. WHY Oh yeah. I'm in Asia. RIP. Yes I'm aware that not everyone in Asia is an incredible gamer its a joke. Honestly the real reason is to this day somehow in my region I have not met a single non 3 bar player in my rank. The input lag keeps getting me hit out of my kbd and steps even though I see the moves coming. I'm working on it, but it looks like my skill ceiling is going to have to be way higher if I want to overcome this problem.
Your video's are so helpful, they've really allowed me to progress so much smoother. One thing that's not mentioned in this video but is in another of yours that has also helped with key moves is your recommendation about knowing the range of your moves. That has been a saving grace!
Awww shucks Dale. Thanks for commenting and letting me know you've progressed bro! It means a lot to see you guys getting better. Appreciate the love and support man :)
Meh.. the game doesn't work for me :( I am on PC - EU, I have good internet and i can't find ennemies on rankeds. I usually search 10min+ untill i find an ennemy. And if I do find an ennemy, then even if he quits after the match, I find him over and over again. Like as if there was no other players... :< Also when I try to make a 1v1 with a friend, it says error occured >.>
Sorry to hear that Moon Tsuki. A lot of players experience the ranked situation you speak of. If you would like. Please join my discord. There are a lot of players from the EU in my discord. I'm sure we can find you someone around your rank :)
Thats what turned me off about tekken for a veryyy long time! I couldn't find a match at all!!! But, nowadays there's a lot of players online. I'm in the U.S.
For individuals who just started the game and are in the teal ranks. Lee can use f+4,1 as the screw instead of having to do 3x to 4x b+2 loops. I think people over estimate the importance of b+2 loops in the early ranks.
Why does teal rank in here play like they don't know what they are doing but when i meet teal rank in quick play i meet players that can do optimal combo , know every correct punish for any minus move i do and can do some advance stuff like ak shining wizard from wavedash , drag iwr from jab range and some stuff like that .
Well quick play doesnt effect your rank, so people who you play against quick play might be more skillful than their rank shows. I prefer quick play too. I didnt touch ranked for a long time. When i used to play ranked i wasnt rematching as much, i was using cheesy moves/strings a lot more etc. But in quick play there isnt anything on the stake so i can focus more on improving and having fun.
Thanks for the tips! Where would be the best place to figure out character defining moves? I've been really trying to study this game and trying to learn how to play Lili
I would start by looking up a bunch of guides for your character. Look to see what the guides have in common. Usually it's a good idea to cross reference and see what people have to say that are in common and you'll get a good idea of what's good.
i am currently struggling to get out blue and i really think i perhaps have too few attacks. i have two launch combos. like 4 string and that is about it. even tho i can wiff and block punish and all this stuff after a few matches i think i get too predictable
So I know this is old but I'm newish to tekken and just started watching videos on it. How do you know what your characters key moves are and what situations to use them in?
I would say watch some tournament games and see what attacks are used most often by that player. Preferably take the time to watch a pro vs a pro player so you have a great idea. See when they use that attack.
Just gotta take this stuff into consideration. Maybe try to play for a week without using spring kicks or even wake up kicks as an option. I'm sure it will be hard, but definitely a good practice exercise.
True, but players should also learn early on how to utilize the character's moves. Figuring out when and where to use it is very important. I find that a lot of players just end up not even using very important moves.
You don’t make any of the mistakes? So you use all your characters keys moves, never drop your combos, always convert off CH attacks, and punish all rage arts perfectly. And with all that you can’t get into teal ranks? Am I understanding this correctly?
Don't get so attached to your rank. It will go up, it will go down. If you focus on the fundamentals of the game like block punishing, whiff punishing, movement (sidestepping, backdashing, etc..), capitalizing on launchers you will get there.
This is a fucking fantastic series dude, this was fantastic, and I'm purple (I know, still a scrub). Looking forward to green ranks; please make sure to spend a lot of time on this one (literally like 70% of netplay happens at the green ranks lmao)
Thanks for the compliment enigmaticheart666. I really appreciate you being humble even though you in the purple ranks. :) trust me I'll spend the time needed in the green ranks to help players out.
just saw this in my recommended and let me tell you, I'm very glad I did. I'm new to the game and know Bob's basics pretty well but have trouble online and I'm currently stuck hovering around 2nd/3rd Dan. this gave me some great things to work on, I love it. really great vid!
I've already made a pretty detailed video on these. I didn't want to restate everything I made a video on already. Here is the video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oDN6teVolPU.html
Being prepared for counter hits is easier said than done. Even pro players drop combos from unexpected hits. Tekken also has that weird thing sometimes where you can hit an opponent at a weird angle and end up on the opposite side or or on the opponent's side.
Being prepared for counter hit is not terribly hard to do. The issue with counter hits that you see drop is that the pros are going for the hard stuff. What I'm talking about here in the teal ranks is the easy stuff. The easy combos out of counter hits are not bad to do at all. The opposite side / opponent side weird angles usually is something that happens at walls. If you are ever afraid of that happening then shorten the wall combo. But again... it's a game and every game has weird things that happen.
Pretty good video, but I kind of disagree with #3 and #2: people are in teal ranks BECAUSE they lack execution and/or awareness. Usually the opponent is mashing some buttons and throwing random stuff at you and as a newer player you just can’t execute combos under this pressure and the CH is a surprise, because you don’t know any of the moves and stuff. You can’t be prepared for something you don’t even knew “existed”. So I feel those two tips are kind of ... contradictory I guess?
It's fine that you disagree, it's pretty hard to squeeze every mistake that a teal rank player makes since, there is a lot of them. Finding out which 5 mistakes teal rank players can work on, and which will have the most impact is what I was after. Also teal rank players don't necessarily "lack execution" most of them have practiced combos in practice mode and know the combos, it's like you said they press a button and are surprised by it, but this is also because 50% of the time they are in fact... mashing. Hence when I say press a button with "intention" they then won't be caught off guard by a stray counter hit. Regardless, thanks for the comment Starduzzt :) thanks for watching my man! Keep on Tekkening.
I am still having a hard time trying to get Bryan out of real ranks but I always end up short.. ended up getting demoted back down to Initiate. Definitely going to apply what's been said in this video to how I play. Thank you Peter!
Ranks will come and go. It will go up and it will go down. Don't let rank be something that you gage as your only level of skill. Sometimes you will go against better players who were deranked themselves, and because of that your level might go down. Just keep working on improving your own game and as long as you are better today than you were 1 week ago or 1 month ago. I'd call that progress. Keep it up man.
I personally find that at these ranks players should just focus on staple combos that players won't drop. Focusing on wall travel is less important thank just figuring out tools / key moves. Lots of beginners I think try to work on 20 things at once when in reality it is best to focus on 1-2 different things.
Hey Peter what do you do when you throw Bryan's Magic 4 with 150% intent and still don't get dash jabs XD...I have resorted to mixing 4,3...4,3,4, and 4,3,(hold)4 in order to get most out of him. Don't even suggest Smash and Mach kick...that shit is harder than dash jabs. At least I can do those in practice mode lol.
Yes, but realistically a player at most can focus on at best 1-2 things at a time. Because there is so much going on in the game and so much to work on I think when players hone in and dedicate to working on certain things progress becomes a lot more achievable. But then again, this is just my way of thinking. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions.
Combos aren't the only thing that is part of Tekken. There is spacing, block punishment, whiff punishment, mind games, movement, positioning, character knowledge, sidestepping, and much much more. Execution is only part of the game.
@@PeterYMao you helped me so much, because of your tips i was able to go from initiate to overlord and have enough confidence to make a tekken channel, thank you so much, you are a blessing. 😇
Woaah i always thought im a blue ranked player but i guess im a little bit above blue😂 Nice video man been there done that and still doing mistakes that lead to death combos by paul and get fucked by alisa a long way to go😂❤️❤️❤️ keep teaching peter you are too good at this🎓🎓
Man your videos are top notch. Will you do videos about mantaining a cool head in competition? My nerves got me in a tournament and I performed bad as a result
Hey Peter, i really enjoy all of your YT-content, thanks in advance. ;) i know the title is mistakes and all you listed is so true. BUT..... the biggest Problem for me is, how can i know or get to know all the (50something?) characters moves sort of? The problem is that i am overwhelmed sometimes and just dont know what to do, because (my opionion) i do not know the opponents character, what that character can do and my punishes to surten moves and so on and on of course. Is there a shortcut how to get into the game considering this thought to be a problem?
If you go to a foreign country let's say for this example Iceland. You learn the fundamentals like the alphabet, some grammar, a few easy words like "market" "bathroom" "restaurant." What do you do when you arrive in the city where everyone only speaks Icelandic, speak very quickly, uses words you don't understand? This is the problem you are encountering in Tekken. The analogy I am giving with languages and Tekken are linked. It takes "time" and "practice" to get good at a language, but then it becomes second nature. Right now you are probably 1 or 2 years into playing Tekken maybe less is my guess, and it will just take dedication to practicing learning moves of the characters. Are there are a lot of characters in this game and lots of moves? Absolutely, but no less than a new language. If you were to look up a dictionary or even look up common words that are spoken there are at least 800-1000 different words that are used in a day to day basis. So at the end of the day it comes down to how much you really want to learn this game, and how dedicated are you? The people who are really good at Tekken have stuck with this game, and practiced. Those who quit were the ones who couldn't continue. I hope this helps.
@@PeterYMao Thanks Peter, yes, sure it helps and i guess, thats what everybody knows, but it's of course not what i hoped to hear in the search of a shortcut ;) so it's practice and practice and practice and..... well, and try not to get frustrated.... thats the main part i guess....
Good to know I mostly don't do any of these mistakes now. Now I wait to get eviscerated in the Green ranks video cuz that is where I submitted mine lol. If you wanna do a video on common yellow rank mistakes too lemme know. I will even send you those. 😂😂
Bull_DozZzer I wanted to use people's mains for the videos. You submitted your secondaries. Also, you play so many characters what rank do you have your main at? I generally recommend players get really really really comfortable with their main before picking a secondary.
@@PeterYMao Bryan and Kazumi at Usurper, Paul is 3rd main, also at Usurper. The video I gave you of Bryan in Green Ranks was him being my main. The reason I stopped at usurper was because of auto promotion. I really suck at movement and execution and didn't want to play new characters beyond Fighter. Which was a good decision because my Kazuya has struggled real hard in Green ranks and now I got him to vindicator. Plus I try to play a very fundamental style with every character I have. Poke pressure, block punishment and whiff punishment.
Just found this channel I’m waiting for shade I’m in green ranks Haha There’s lots of smurfs I have encountered Here omg I did make that rage art mistake lol I’m the beginning Not so much the others but you should only use rage art/drive if either you know you can get away with it or at the end of a combo Unpredictability is also important Tekken which I learnt the hard way Otherwise people with pretty much know what your about to do before you do it They block then they punish you Parring practice is also somewhat important theirs loads of players that abuse unblockables Didn’t learn combos to begin with lol Relied on mix ups , and unpredictability and creativity As I’m in green I’m starting to learn combos I have made my own combos up as well so I’m experimenting Great commentary and advice
Yo Carly! I'm sorry you hear you encountering smurfs. It really ruins the fun of the game especially at the beginner levels. However, just try to keep a positive attitude through the trials and difficulties. I know it can be difficult, but it will be rewarded in the end. As for the combos, you don't have to make up your own combos. There are a lot of good combos on RU-vid that you can use that character specialist have come up with. See if that helps you out :)
Well I made up ones mainly because I play a mix up heavy character as a Main I play Lei Wulong if you were wondering I am the smurfs are annoying as soon as I get close to fighter rank I lose and go back down I lost my marauder rank but got it back so in reality I think right now I’m a Marauder rank Which I think my skill level is pretty much that marauder/fighter I know there’s sample combos which I’m learning on But I have also created some of my own one does 59 damage and is much easier and more consistent to execute than the 63 damage combo Mix up combo = comet kick / back turn launcher and launcher / mid kick Rather than uppercut , forward kick / snake strike , backturn fist , launcher So that’s why I know I don’t have too but to me with lei it’s part of the fun I know his hard to master and I learnt the hard way too died so many times in the beginning But I’m slowly getting better all the time In fact some of the combos I saw lei player Bilal_Kaka use so most of them aren’t made up at all lol When I get decent with Lei I might pick up a secondary The Smurfs just make me want to get better but they are really annoying at times this one Heihachi was brawler rank and no way he was his skill level said otherwise Perfect electrics , quite a few combos He knew loads of techniques and including punch parry which is hard so react and use unless you use it lots / practice His level would have been at least 10 ranks above me I couldn’t even touch him I got smashed one mistake and it was game over Thank you for Reply :) Sorry it’s so lengthy
Rage Art can be used in situations where the opponent is over pressuring especially on plus frame situations, but for now, I would stick to rage drive until you figure out the frames better and get a better read on the opponent.
Your videos suddenly started getting recommended to me and I am not dissapointed. Amazing content! It's nice to see material like this for players like me 😅❤ Also, loving your voice! It sounds so smooth and relaxing 😆
