Go out to the forrest. Find a standing dead or a stump. Enjoy outdoors. And BTW a cheap walmart hatchet works just fine. Just pick a good one with the right grain orientation in the handle and a good wedging. Enjoy.

Interesting opinions. Thanks. Question: have you ever tried throwing at end-grain? I mean, I've been sinking a hatchet into the same log for the last six months, and all of those pine boards must get expensive. So what's the deal with not just aiming at a log face?

Plumb Victory...it's my understanding the early ones made for actual use by carpenters have a thinner blade and better finishing. The later ones, like the one I found in my garage, have a thicker blade and a rough finish. Something to consider if someone is buying a Plumb Victory on-line, expecting a head that simply needs a good sharpening.

Both those PlumbBSH are now more than $50 since they're considered collectable. My Plumb National is WW2 era (actually a Plumb National Victory) and the half hatchet perhaps 1960s-80s (impossible to tell). Tho it throws well, I personally don't like the half hatchet as much as the National (I own both) bc I like a heavier hatchet with a full 4" bit and longer handle. In general curved handles are harder to throw with until you master the pro/claw grip but straight handles are MUCH easier to use.

Cool, but I prefer tomahawks, or full steel constructed hatchets like Eastwing etc... (if you like hatchets for whatever reason) All the ones you show here will break pretty easy, and re-fitting handles is a pain in the ass. IMO.
@Axeadelphia
@Axeadelphia 5 лет назад
Tomahawks and the Estwing brand axes are great but they don't meet NATF standards. Tomahawks are just strait up banned and the Estwing has a metal handle. Ours have to be wood. Wooden handles snap very easily when you are learning your throw but once you have it down and you aren't hitting handle anymore you shouldn't have a problem.
@LastBastian
@LastBastian 5 лет назад
@@Axeadelphia True. I've never heard of NATF, I've just been throwing for fun since I was a kid in the 80's. I wonder why they chose these standards for your competition?
@Axeadelphia
@Axeadelphia 5 лет назад
It was started in a back yard with some old construction boards that had been duct taped together. The sport has changed a lot since then but we still throw on the boards. It certainly makes it harder to stick but that only adds to the strategy behind the game.
@tednjessdamman7089

Why are tomahawks banned? Is it just because hawk throwing is a different sport? I get that. Or was there another rationale?

I believe it is the 14" truper scout hatchet handle you can get on amazon. They can be a bit pricey sometimes. Househandles.com is another good option but can take a while to arrive. Its always worth checking your local lowes or home depot to see what they have in stock. That way you can try it out before you buy it.

Thanks for making this video. I was looking around online and noticed that most of the Plumb Victory Half Hatchets seem to be either used, or from odd sellers. Is that company out of business or something? Can't seem to source a new one directly from the company or any retail locations. If they're no longer making them, do you perhaps know of any companies with a similar design and good quality that is still manufacturing / selling this type of hatchet new?
@Axeadelphia
@Axeadelphia 5 лет назад
Yes the plumb axe company no longer produces axes as far as I know. I have found all mine on Ebay. If you don't want to mount the axe yourself Vaughn has some solid options. A 1.75lb head which would be at the high end of the NATF specs and then a 1.35 lb head that would be much lighter. This is the larger one. www.amazon.com/Vaughan-28-Ounce-Builders-Hatchet-construction/dp/B00004Z2XT/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1533744526&sr=8-1&keywords=carpenters+hatchet

Hi guys! Just did a homemade target, but the wood doesn't seem right, I'm using pine wood, can you recommend any other?
@Axeadelphia
@Axeadelphia 6 лет назад
Hey Ian. We actually also use pine in our practice space. If you are having trouble getting the axe to stick try wetting the board a bunch as it can soften up the wood. Some locations use Hem-fir wood if you want to try something different.

Those are the trophies that Urban Axes awards for championship wins. Everyone who is a member at our practice space brings their trophies there to display. The writing all over them are the signatures of people who were eliminated during the tournament that the trophy is from.

Dear Modern Axe Throwing Sport, Cultures that depended on ax throwing such as the Native Americans and Norse people used a slide on friction fit hafting style for a reason, you should look into that. I'm looking at you council members of organizations such as World Axe Throwing League, National Axe Throwing Federation, The Backyard Axe Throwing Association, etc. ... Also I use the words ax and axe as ways to make a slight distinction, and thus, *to me* , they're not interchangeable. That is to show that I like by the ax so deeply that I, like Eskimos with the word snow, have found need for more distinction, even with the broader term. It's a matter of how generalized we're getting versus how generic were getting when we use this term. [This is your TLDR warning, sorry it's a little late. The following is just for the curious, it's just me trying to explain what the difference is *to me* between 'ax' and 'axe'. Also the format is rambling so, fair warning there too.] To me, when I say axe it's one specific axe that is not the same as an identical axe that came off the same exact factory line... it's yours, not Bob's... it's a specific axe... the generic term. When I'm refering to one of any ax* or one of any specific type of ax, so for example "hand me an ax from that pile of axes". I also pluralize them differently... I had to make up a word to do this. I pluralize axe as axes, however *I pluralize ax as axen. Axes are of a specific type or implies you care about how you can group them separate from other typs of axes, but axen are all axen no matter what type. Ax can also be paralyzed simply as ax, ie "a pile of ax" = "a pile of axen" but does not equal "a pile of axes" as I care which type of axes... they must be from that pile of axes on our tabe because those are the ones we rented from the bar... verses a pile in a line of piles of community axes in a Norse Village in like the year 922 or something ... then it's axes because we don't care what the grouping is if they grab from a pile any pile and grab one at random than it's as good as the next... poor example, not realistic, I know, but it communicates the point of how I use the word. Okay jay went out, my high's wearing off, and so this only-a-half-troll is over, hope you enjoyed it. Cheers.

Honestly most of the top people in the NATC don't use any sort of fancy commissioned axe. Not only do our axes take a hell of a beating but its also smart to get good with an axe that you can get multiple of as a lot of the skills challenges involve multiple axes. I am sure they would be excited to have someone with experience working for them. Most people who start at axe locations have little to no experience with the actual sport. You will have to join a league and test your skills too. They are a really good time. The NATC started with BATL (the backyard axe throwing league) haha
