love this, i'm in my final year at Sheffield and i'm gonna miss living here so much. i feel like it's quite underrated compared to other unis around this part of the country (Leeds, Manchester, Notts) but it really ticks all the boxes for me. everything is so so cheap (i'm from London), my rent is cheaper then my friends' basement rooms in Leeds and Manny for a really nice house w the best garden (5 bed student house ~£100/week). societies and sport are really big here and people are suuuper friendly so it definitely has a community sort of vibe without being too small - makes nights out really fun bc you'll probably see a few people you know without it only being familiar faces. you're also spot on about having lots of people from different walks of life, which i guess is why we aren't stereotyped as much lol. the people i've met here are generally very rounded and have a good work life balance. you'll notice students going out a lot during the term but we all really crack down during exam and deadline season. people here seem to know how to prioritise the sesh and still get a First.
As a practice based film student,if I can choose my undergraduate university again.I would recommend go to a university that is Russell group and has a high QS ranking but good for film production as well. If you go to a university that is good at film production but rank low,your self-esteem will be constantly attacked by others,either they never heard of it,or they belittle it.I went to university of Westminster which I received extensive amount of training.I learn almost everything except how to make VR film or animation or foley.It’s pleasing and it help me with my postgraduate applying.But over three years of undergrad study ,when people ask me where are you at?I said University of Westminster,their response was always”I’m sorry, I Never heard of it”or just not impressed.I even had a experience of a girl stop talking to me when I told her I’m at Westminster.I think when you are studying in London,especially if you are Chinese.Most people would ask “are you at UCL or UAL?”and you have to tell them no.This would constantly bring you a lot pressure on a ongoing basis,you would always feel you are lower than UCL student.This was my real feeling and I think that is partly why don’t like London.It’s not because the city.It’s because I feel I was constantly not being respected at first sight because of the ranking of my university.
Considering you only got BBB, university of york was by far best choice. Friends nephew was rejected with A*AA from maths and computer science from York. Also, I know few earning nice 6 figure salary at Goldmans and Bank of America, who went to York. Oxbridge is overated. Durham, Edinburgh, York, Bristol etc will get you top position in Finance or tech or consulting if you are a good candidate. Only thing Oxbridge will have advantage in UK is things like politics - PPE and top law firms - clifford Chance etc. However, York has a top law department but some firms only recruit from Oxbridge.
This is late reply, but in 2017 the grades were much lower. Since I've seen most courses for computer science increase by one or two grades. e.g. for computer science at Manchester it was A*AA when I applied in 2019 now it's A*A*A*.
I went to York with BBB in the 1980s. If I could do it all I again I would probably choose York again too. Great course, small university and very friendly. I am still in touch with one or 2 people and have done pretty well in my chosen career. I also did a year in Toronto as part of my York degree. i did my MA at UCL once I was in work which was good, but a uni in the inner city is very different and more impersonal.
Could not agree more. I got into York with AAB in late 90's and had offer from LSE. Went to York and had one of best times of my life. Excellent teaching, great tennis and a beautiful city that feels revolved around university students. Then did a masters at LSE and been a student in London was awful. Feel a random human in a millions of people in a city that revolves around international business. Worked 5 years in London in investment banking then got the hell out .
@@davidc4408 agreed. After 16 years of London I got out of there too. You did not need AAB to get in York in the 80s. Mind you back then only 1 in 10 went to Uni.
Oxbridge is good, but you have to be prepared should you not get in because of the odds of getting an offer are pretty slim. So its good to ake sure the other 4 options count. Some unis have a good reputation for a specific subject. Like Lancaster is good for business, marketing and physics. Loughborough is sport. Bangor and Chester is good for Zoology and animal science. We went to Reading this year with the youngest. If you like your lakes and greenery but have that close link to London, its worth a visit.

What would u recommend out of Durham,Bristol, Kent,Manchester,Leeds? ( also maybe considering Essex or Exeter or York )In terms of social life and exposure for an international student as that is a huge concern aswell aside from rankings
depends on the course I would say. For social life Manchester is unbeatable and Leeds also good. Durham and Kent might be too provincial though both are in nice cities.
Hey man, I'm an international student and I'll be doing masters in digital marketing and also have offers from Leeds, Cardiff, nottingham but really confused which one to go for... .I'm not a fan of rankings so it doesn't matter... the decision comes down to nightlife and social life in general... as it also helps making connection. Minerva University in the US is not been ranked by Times Higher Education Rankings and neither QS World University Rankings. How is it a good university, then? Your choice of studying in the University of York, even the University of Sydney was much better in comparison to a unranked university in the US. 15:47

That's great congratulations 🎉🥳 it really depends on you...I heard that accomodation and living expenses are cheap in Sheffield and they offer alot of scholarship 😅I know nothing about Newcastle and Liverpool since I'm only interested in going to Sheffield but it's competitive it also depends on ranking for you if that's what you want
@@rishabhbansal2005 looking at the league tables for mechanical engineering specifically, Leeds is one above Loughborough which means the rankings constantly switch/change. Now considering that you have taken into account the environment, community e.g BAME and how far away from home: Leeds -russel group -good for almost all courses -more likely to get a more well paid job - Well funded=more opportunities Loughborough -specialises in engineering -less competition so more likely to get a first/ 2:1 It's up to you but I would still advise to go to Leeds
@@aisha6700 I think these would typically go alongside academic qualifications, because of the academic rigour of those universities they would be keen to see that you have performed well in academic study previously
I can't help but I heard more my fellow Indonesians studied in Bristol than Liverpool. So only guess Bristol is slightly better? don't get me wrong, i heard about university of Liverpool too but not much
@@lifewithdylan as per ur opinion, is it worth coming to uk as an international student to study sports journalism/journalism considering jobs are apparently very limited in this field and sponsorship is even more difficult. I am asking this because I inted to study Sports Journalism from University of Brighton in the upcoming September intake
