Mitsubishi: Let's do the dumbest thing in automative history and take the name of one of our best cars ever and make it a crossover. Ford: Hold my beer.
Ford could've saved their breath and called it the "Ford Mach E" and that would be the end of it. Adding "Mustang" for something that isnt a Mustang is like adding salt into your cup of coffee. It never mixes.
@Julian Crooks I saw a 74 corvette 454 station wagon and I thought it was cool, it wasn't really a station wagon but just like a "what if" thing. They did the same kit for a 77 Trans am, that was nice too. But a brand new showroom one? No.
Your too funny. I laughed! Totally agree. I would buy an Edsel, but never a E fir erase the design drawing! Fully concur with your list. I own original 60’s Mustangs. The Mustang E is terrible. I do like the Mustang II, great for my kids. Ford lost their “Ford Better Idea”. Their light bulb burned out👎🏻😬
Sorry, but I liked the '71 to '73 coupes. The Grande was the preferred version of course, the only way to get the luxury interior shown in the video. That fastback roof window was impossible to live with here in Colorado. Start with the optical distortion that was factory supplied, then add the early morning frosts and many snowstorms. It was absolutely impossible to defrost and the large cold glass made the interior cold all winter. A 2bbl Cleveland 351, much better air conditioner and heating system, better power steering made the coupes exactly what the Mustang was good at. That is a comfortable daily driver. The Grande made another notable contribution, they provided the luxury interiors that ended up in so many convertible restorations!! I drove several Grandes over the years, waiting for the Mustang II and the 4 cylinder ones to die off. Today I have a 2013 and a 2014 convertible, with the top up, they still have the coupe profile and the PRACTICAL rear window for a nice daily driver. Thanks for the video!!!
The 71 to 73 Stan platform was designed around the new 429.Up to that point they were the most structurally sound mustangs made.Other than the roof kind they were just like a macho. And even with the big 429 you could actually work on it. You may not like the looks. But these are great cars. Very similar to the Australian xa. falcon.
I had a 73 Mach 1 in 1980. My first car. I had looked at the earlier Mustangs but since I am tall I fit in the 73 a bit better. And the Mach 1 is a handsome car. A drunk driver took it out so after searching around I replaced it with a 73 convertible which I have owned for about 35 years. I do enjoy driving it. I swapped in a 4V Cleveland (4 bolt mains and all). And back around the turn of the century happened up a tripower manifold for it. (XE-151445).
The Mustang II V8 was created and developed all the way in Mexico. Mexican engineers in charge considered unacceptable a Mustang without a V8. They saved the stallions from extinction. Since 74, all the Mustangs II made and sold in Mexico were genuine V8s.
My Dad bought a new 65 fastback when they first came out. Drove/street raced it for a couple of years before trading it in on a new 67 SS396 Chevelle. Kept that till he was forced to put on his 4th set of rear tires and traded for a white, plain-Jane 69 Musdonkey fastback with an anemic 351W and hideous red interior for Mom while he went to Vietnam for his 3rd tour. When he got home, Dad went for the new 70 Mach I with both spoilers, shaker and window slats. This 351C seemed to have a helluva lot more balls and was able to actually spin the tires on rough pavement. Dad blew the engine on a quick trip to Virginia just to see how fast it would scoot on the interstate. Apparently 137 was the number just before the magic smoke escaped from the tailpipes (destroyed the rear main bearing). His final mustang was a 66 fastback with a 289 2v, 3-spd that he bought for me as a high school graduation present in 1974 from a Colonel who lived across the street from us in Germany. The Colonel had purchased the car new and was underneath it EVERY Saturday working or polishing something No power anything but one fun go kart to play and park in :)
Bravo! No arguments here. When I heard about the Mach E I first thought it was only a prototype name idea and not the final product. Found out I was wrong and I nearly exploded. The Mustang created a genre of sport cars, literally. I mean, it's a historical monument. Okay, sporty SUV's are kind of the rage right now. Jury is still out on how much an electric version can pull it off, but EVERYBODY is making them already (electric or not). The Mach E looks cool and competent and if they would've stopped with the Mach E name without Mustang who can really argue? I beg FORD to do like they did with the 500 and rebage it Taurus after the fact. Pony cars are two door personal sport cars - rear wheel drive, front engine. They were never meant to be everyone's car - or go everywhere. FORD this is blasphemous. Turn in your blue oval.
Because everyone there is under 40, nobody thought to call the latest abomination the "LTD-E," did they? There's a legacy name way overdue to be brought back and what I've suggested has a pleasant ring to it. "Galaxy" is WAY too retro, "Fairmont" and/or "Futura", way too pretending-to-be-upscale or fake futuristic. "Maverick" would make a good SUV/Crossover name. Even "Torino" wouldn't have been awful. But don't ask consumers. We don't know anything.
Badge engineering at it's worst. At least the Buick Regal Somerset and Toyota Camry Solara only used those names as a bridge, dropping the un-related legacy name once the model was established. This one has nowhere to go.
Agree 100% the Mach E should never have been called a Mustang. I’d be ok if the made the coupe fully electric and called it that, hell I’d even be ok with it being AWD. But making it a CUV for marketing reasons is just shameful.
I agree with you about the Mach E. It will be interesting to see how it sells, and who will buy it. I've owned 2 mustangs. The first was a 2005 V6, then I upgraded to the 2011 V6 model when the engine upgraded to 305 hp. Both were fun cars. I currently own a Ford Fusion and a Lincoln MKZ so I've been loyal to Ford for the past 15 years after being disappointed by GM. Now I am quite disappointed with Ford for discontinuing most of its cars. The German brands offer me more of what I want now. I guess I am one of the few people that actually likes the looks of the Mustang II though. It's the 1979-1986 style I hate. I could never really tell them apart much from the Ford Escort's of its time. Couldn't compare with the IROC-Z Camaros. Even the Chrysler Laser/Dodge Daytona was more appealing to me.
I’ve been lucky enough to own two of the rarer mustangs. An ‘86 SVO, and a ‘04 cobra. Getting older and living where I live they just aren’t to practical anymore. Still love them though
Sorry I owned an 85 GT Mustang, everyone was drooling over the Camaro, the Mustang proved right, it brought back the Mustang in a big way. The 82 GT Mustang was pretty good as well, not as good as the 85.
Imagine buying a brand spankin new 79 mustang foxbody with the 5.0 and getting your doors blown off by a bone stock mustang from the 60's... its depressing
The 4th gen was SO superior to the fox body car, both in performance and aesthetics. I wouldn't dump on it so easily. But I'll agree with you 100% on the EV, and for the same reasons. And its not an SUV, which are vehicles with a truck chassis. This is strictly a crossover. Or, just a tall car. And THIS ONE deserves the "blasphemy" video clip.
YES!!! Your are 200% right about the Mustang Mach E! The marketing people at Ford must be brain dead to not be able to come up with a new name for their first electric SUV. How about simply the Ford "E!". That even works with all their other SUV names starting with "E". If Ford had made and electric version of the current two-door Mustang that would have been great and market shattering. But naming a 4-door electric grocery-hauling SUV a "Mustang".?!?! That is even more unforgivable then when decades ago, Ford was considering re-badging and selling the Japanese made Probe as a "Mustang". Memo to Ford: Don't expect any Mach-E to be welcomed at any Mustang Car Shows or Rallies, now or ever.
Worst Mustang I ever owned, bar none, was one of those early 80's Capri body atrocities....the thing was horrid.....I actually left it on the side of the highway, and called a towing company to tow it the 300 miles to the dealer....
I owned a '72 back around 1980.. Back in those days used cars were cheap, so I would pick up 2 or 3 and get rid of the dogs.. That '72 Coupe may have been the worst of the bunch.. It looked smooth and sexy but it had a V6 that was an utter embarrassment.. It was very slow and constantly rattled and hiccuped about.. Absolute garbage that I was happy to unload asap... Interestingly though, the car I replaced it with was a '72 Gran Torino Wagon that was rusted badly but it drove nice and ran like a champ for years with a sound 302 under the hood!..
I liked the Foxbody. I never owned one but knew many who have. A buddy of mine owned a '79, snatched the turbo charged 4 cylinder out and swapped in a 289 and man would it melt the asphalt. My shop teacher had an '84 and swapped the 302 with a 351 and it was an everyday driver and drag racer on the weekends
I want every to know that if I were somehow talked into buying a Mach E, I promise I will shave off all the badging off the car to not embarrass Mustang owners.
Ford will never learn. I'm surprised the retro wasn't on the list didn't know your #1 existed. But agree with it. Really wish they would wise up and bring back the original pony car look with modern improvements. Personally hate everything they did to the Mustang since 69. SMH
These guys need to more research regarding H.P. figures!!!!!! The fox body v-8 stated at 139 and then grew to 157, then 175, then 200 in 86. The King Cobra had 139 hp. I have owned many of these.
I'm pretty sure the reason Ford chose Mustang for the mache is because Ford is planning on getting rid of the Mustang just like they got rid of all the other non-SUV's/Trucks. Stopping car production is the only thing that makes something close to a reason to do something so stupid.
Mach E should have been called something else! I think your list is valid. One reason, every mustang named except the Mach E. My family has owed. we talked about some of the same issues. Even though the mustang 2 was different and not rely excepted. I still love the King Cobra lol .
I have to agree with you! Man there were some ugly ones , the latest look great!!!!! Electric Mustangs , anything labeled Mustang without the performance ain’t a pony!!!
Ive had every model the 71 fastback I put in 460 with an AOD and 9" posi was a beast..really nice riding and Boss Hood looked cool. . And the old 76 mustang 2 fastback was a great car handled better than the 60's cars and after I pulled the 2.3 5 speed and dropped in a 289 with 2v Cleveland heads street boss engine then later a built up 351w roller cam engine stroked in a 74 must 2 and it would out corner and beat most I raced. And my 80 mercury Capri / mustang hot hatch 351C 4v all these cars were selecting the right model and building it up yourself..and performed well for 1985-89. Now all people do is buy the performance car with the new tech and resurgence of power wars.
Partly because of it's small size, the Mustang II suffered more than most Ford cars from a design flaw afflicting almost every RWD Ford car introduced starting around 1970. Almost every Ford car (rwd cars, not trucks) appears to have had the front suspensions moved towards the rear of the vehicle by up to 12" (Google V10 Mustang 2, that car had the front wheels moved 12" forward). Look at the profile view of any Ford car made since 1970 and you will notice they all seem to have had their front suspensions moved back. One thing the Mustang II did have going for it was it's front suspension, which was the best one fitted to any Mustang at least up until the 2009 Mustangs, but I haven;t had the chance to check a newer one out yet. I can only imagine there was someone on the design team that was a big fan of doing donuts, I guess.
94-98 you’ve got be kidding those are hot cars back in the 90’s my friend had one he used to trash it ... car was awesome, the very first you showed copper colour with light tan bucket seats far out I would’ve dob my own mother for it 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼the 71-73 coupe I love them too , and 87-93 Fox 🦊 bodies omg the T-Top are so gorgeous
Naming an SUV 'Mustang', is gasping the last breaths. Automobiles as we know them are about to become extinct. Ford has nothing to lose by wringing out the last vestiges of value from a doomed industry.
Excellent review. I like you loved the best and hated the worst. The models you show as worst were an insult to Mustangs, and a disaster for Ford. Mach-E isn't a Mustang. It's a damn electric four-door SUV. WTF Ford?! Family and I owned New 1968 Coupe (Father), New 1969 Fastback (Mom), 1967 GTA Convertible (Mine in 78-83), New 2002 GT (Wife), New 2012 GT Convertible (Mine), and Used 2007 Shelby GT500 Convertible (Mine 2016-2019).
I have owned 2 of the Mustangs on this list the 1971 Grande Coupe which was the first car I ever owned and the 2nd car I owned was a 1980 Mustang 3 door. Out of all the Fords I've owned in my life I loved the predecessor of the Ford Mustang which was the Ford Falcon. The Mustang a development collaboration of Lee Iacocca and Carol Shelby was designed on the Falcon platform developed by Robert S. Mcnamara and Don Harris and the 1964 and 1965 Ford Mustangs share their underpinnings with the 1964 & 1965 Ford Falcon. A 4 door Falcon of those two years are the closest you can get to a 4 door Ford Mustang. In 1966 the Falcon would be moved to the Fairlane platform and Mustangs along with their Cougar counterpart would continue on the Falcon original platform until 1971.
Agree. The Charlie's Angel's Mustangs (74 - 78) were very awful indeed. HOWEVER! They had one redeeming feature. The Mustang II front end is the go to setup for hot rodders worldwide. That's something, even though these cars were an embarrassment to everyone involved.
The Mach E is SAVING the classic Mustang, and probably a lot more classics from dust. Hear me out: By engineering a manufacturer drivetrain that is completely electric, and also making it backward compatible; Ford just gifted the classic car community a way to enjoy our cars into the future. Paris, London, New York; these are all places that will restrict or outright BAN gas powered cars within the next 10 years. They will not be the only ones, they are just some of the first major ones. Ford offered the Mach E powertrain as a crate item, with warranty for $3,900. They sold out. There is a MASSIVE backlog. That sure looks like a lot of people like the product. So I think the Mach E should be #4, and the Mustang II should be #5. They both helped save the Mustang, but the Mach E also is helping other classic cars to thrive in the electric future of automotive transportation 😎 As a proud owner of a 1967 fastback; I long to get my hands on the electric motor.
How many times did they claim an "ALL NEW" Mustang based off the 1979 Fox body platform? Let's see, 79, 94, 98 at least. I'd say that's pretty good mileage and ROI. They did the same with the pickups. Mustang E?! No comment....
I can't recall ever seeing a 4 door Mustang of any kind, except for a Station Wagon Mustang I saw once! FORD always said that it had a better idea about the Fixed Or Repaired Daily if not Found On Road Dead monikers! I agree with you, but I will also remain a MOPAR/JEEP Man! My fiancee bought an Edge after her Charger was stolen and I can see why I will NEVER buy a FORD!!! I had Mercury Lynx Wagon once, but NEVER again!!!
The introduction of the 79 foxbody is what actually saved the model from being discontinued. The mustang 2 was created because of the gas crisis in the mid 70s . So the introduction of a new body aka the foxbody revitalized the love for the mustang.
So the worst Mustangs of all time are basically most Mustangs made from 1971-1986 and the Mach-e. Sadly, I have to put aside my bias that all Mustangs are great and agree that some are better than others.
Unlike many watching this video, I have never been a big fan of Mustangs with the exception of years 1967, 68 and 1971-1973. Yes I differ from the author of this video. The only mustangs I thought had a great design were the 71-73 coupes. My brother had a 73 coupe for his first car and he loved it and quite frankly I did also. I guess I have always been a Camaro fan (with the exception of the last body style). My first car was a 1974 Camaro and it was maybe too big, definitely a gas guzzler but I loved it.
I had a blue 1975 Ford Mustang II notchback with the 2.3 and a blue with white stripes 1976 Mustang II Cobra II with the 5.0 and I thought neither one was a bad car, especially for the time they were built. I dated, in 1977, a woman with a black and gold striped 1977 Mustang II Cobra II when I had my 1976.
The Mach E is the worst mustang ever made, I'm not gonna lie on that. Ford was on some serious shit for thinking: "Hey..what if we take a mustang..and make it into an SUV"? I get that the mustang was turned into a classic muscle car, into a modern one, then into a sports car, but THIS? This Mach E is just no. A. It's electric. AN ELECTRIC MUSTANG, HOW FUCKING COOL, I'm sure gonna miss the American sound it gives out... B. This is an obvious one but it's a god damn SUV, as a mustang so no.. C. I just wanted to put this here. I do apologize for getting toxic about this Mustang, it just..k i l l s me.
agree, every thing about the Mach E is totally opposite to what mustang stands for( not talking about it being electric probably the only thing in its favor). its not even a pony car, Its a 4 door SUV trying to look like a tesla with a horse badge stuck on it. For god sake FORD way to go and try to destroy an Icon,
I agree with your no. 1 pick, but totally disagree with all the others because I lived during those eras of stangs and owned a 1985 with a 4 banger which was a great car for my family for several years. So I'd guess what you and I want in a car are much opposed.
The thing about the 70s and 80s mustangs, goes was just trying to keep the name plate alive. Anyone ever heard of the gas crises if they hadn't done what they did we wouldn't have a mustang. Ford wasn't the only company doing what they did all the company's did it to survive
Thank you I was going to point out the same. It hurt every car company that's why early 70's through 80's cars sucked it was the end of the muscle car era all together. It was making a good comeback until Rona reared her ugly face. Screwing us all in gas. But that's why we work on our own cars to make them faster, better than how they came out of the 70/80's. Example my gorgeous 72 Mustang Grande that I've completely redone from disc brakes all around to the smoking motor that requires a towel in the passenger seat for women. Basically ground up improvements suspension, drivetrain, electrical and all.
@@slimpkl1809 people tend to forget that mustangs were built for you to make your own and that's why they weren't the fastest car out the box. That was up to you and that's why they're better than the Chrysler's and Chevy's if the day.
@Steve Silvas Brand whoring. Look what Ford did to Lincoln and Mercury for years: slap a chromey waterfall grille on the front and connect the tail lights at the rear with a red reflector strip between them and BAM ! a Mercury or a Lincoln. GFYs Ford.
@Steve Silvas Though I am a Camaro guy at heart, the way I see it, this is not just a Ford/ Mustang defacing. This affects us all collectively as car lovers as a group. Competition between the Detroit big 3 makes us all great. THAT is what competition is all about. Slapping a Mustang Mach E badge on some half baked electric SUV cross over that other than some trim pieces, in NO WAY resembles the Mustang we all recognize. Even I have a favorite Mustang. Steve McQueen's green '68 fastback from the movie Bullitt. (and not one Mustang fan will argue the point with me. I loved that movie from the time I saw it when I was a kid and the bad guy drove the Charger... win, win for Mustang fans everywhere) Mustang fans need to let Ford know of your disapproval. I could live with a hybrid Mustang in it's true form but not with this electric porked out laughing stock. The anecdote "you can't put lipstick on a pig" keep popping into my mind... Peace out my Mustang friends and hang in there. Your GM and Mopar friends got your back on this one.
@@DaveGreg100 I had a 69 Cougar XR-7 w/ 351 Windsor that was an awesome car, I wish I still had it but someone flashed a lot of $100s in my face when I needed money. I'll regret selling that til I die.
@@scottricklaroque7428 Yeah, I can't let go. It's why I have had so few cars in my lifetime. That regret on the ones that did go is still great. Even for the most ordinary of cars.
As the proud owner of a 2014 Mustang GT premium I 100% agree with you about your number one pick. Ford is officially going the wrong direction with this iconic vehicle.
At the time i got the 95 black , with the 17 inch rims it wast las year for the venerable 5.0 or 302 , mine was with cloth seats , regular stereo ( i knew , that i will install a pto grade stereo ) auto but that tranny didn last long it was the W version or wide gears , 7000 miles and replace by warranty, and they told me at San Diego dealership that attended me quickly and no problem , the installed a regular auto that was ñstandard on gt model , and when i left the dealership one of the chief mechanics he was mex/usa , told me do this : Boy dont get in trubles put a mild to agresive shift kit to that tranny so he advice me on brands , where how to and how will i drive the car , racing, almost racing or spirited style or just quicker and trouble free i put the agressive racy stile and all was beautyb Until I drove a 97 camaro z 28 350 , LT1 auto it was so faster and trouble free ,son I get rid of the 215 hp. 5.0 , and got me a Z/28, what a good decision 👍
