I was a fan of Funk first. Donald Byrd was my segway into Jazz so I'll always have a soft spot for him. Cool to see him getting lots of love.

Nice video mate. In response to your comment about Pepper Adams, Byrd In Hand isn't his only appearance on Blue Note. He was a sideman on at least 6 other Donald Byrd records and a number of other artists. Some more notable albums like Lee Morgan's - The Cooker, Hank Mobley - Poppin'. Around 20 or so in total I believe.

Thanks for the video. Great start for someone getting started in jazz AND a great video for people who have been into jazz for a while to check in and see what albums may have slipped under their radar! I come back to this one when looking for more albums to put in my playlist and familiarize myself with what else I need to keep an eye out for!

What’s cool is that you showed a few that would be in everyone’s top 50 but there are several different ones I’d put in mine. The depth of Blue Note sessions is unreal. I see you lean towards soul Jazz and piano leaders. Good stuff.

great stuff!! Watched it again! - but there are some classics that were not in your top 50 then? You left out Somethine Else, See no evil, Out to lunch , Thelonius Monk and several others.. Just curious if it was a conscious choice or maybe because you (understandably) didnt have original copies of them and were showing your top 50 in your vinyl collection.

I met Chuck Rainey who played bass on all of those Mizell produced Donald Byrd albums. He said he only met Donald Byrd once because he would play his parts once everything else was done. Him and Harvey Mason both signed my vinyl copy of Places and Spaces. Chuck and Harvey both remain to be some of the coolest guys I’ve ever met.

Buddy! Please, your poor speakers! What did they do to make you put them in the corner like that?! At the very least, pull them forward to the edge of that entertainment unit! Please, you will be happier with the sound. If you wanna get really crazy pull them out into the room and spread them apart a little more to get a better stereo image, soundstage and center image. If you can't, due to wife and kids, at least pull them forward and maybe read up on speaker placement to get a better understanding. All that aside, nice video and really nice vinyl!!! Love anything Grant Green, Idle Moments is one of my favorites too! Kenny Burrells Midnight Blue is right up there too. Enjoy!

@@southerngrailsauctions awesome! Did you notice quite a difference then? I know a lot of people that listen and enjoy music don't necessarily take to much time to make their experience better and don't realise that just by better speaker placement... it makes a difference! Half of the sound is gear, the other half is placement and room. Most of my Jazz has been all the reissues as I just got into vinyl again last Christmas because my son got me an album and my TT needed to be replaced, so I got a new one and down the rabbit hole I've gone! Lol. One last tip, I just thought of... if you're using a felt or rubber mat, look at a rubber/cork blend. It'll change the sound for the better as well. Take care!

I wasn't at first either, but the older I get the more I'm loving the grooving bass licks and drums. Much more of a dance groove, plus my kids react more to it than the hard bop, so we connect to it better.

I just listened to a 10h European podcast radio show on Sonny Rollins (yes, 10x 1h, covering 1951-2001 !!!). My opinion of Rollins is that it seems very overrated to me. First of all as a player, he does not seem to me better than Johnny Griffin, Stitt, Roland Kirk, Phil Woods, Lateef ... but enjoys a much more important reputation ... and unjustified in my opinion. Ok he plays well, but not better than the musicians I mentioned. In terms of composition, he did not compose anything, everyone knows that St Thomas is a Caribbean folklore already recorded by Randy Weston in 1955 under the title Fire Down There. His other compositions from the 50s ... well, Oleo, Airegin etc ... this can in no way be compared to the compositions of Trane, Bird, Monk or Shorter ... also, his playing and his sound are terribly degraded after 1966 (36 years). It seems that he was traumatized by the arrival of Ornette, Trane, Ayler ... In the 60's he tried to be more free than Ayler, more calypso / blues than Ornette, and more mystical than Trane, but he didn't. did not succeed. Then in the 70s / 80s he tried to be funky, disco ... with really ridiculous and cheesy results ... Did he want to be funkier than James Brown himself? Also, in the radio show they say that he was paid current $ 300,000 for himself to record the Nucleus album (so listen to the result !!!!), and that, for his concerts, his financial claims were unrealistic, only the big festivals could afford it. He played with the Stones but didn't want to go on tour with them because, according to Jagger himself, he wanted too much money! I mean, I'm not making anything up here. In my opinion, he should have remained what he was before, a disciple of Bird at the Tenor, and quit at the age of 40 to leave a quality job, and without trying to follow fashion. Thank you for not insulting me because I have documented myself on Rollins and I like to have constructive discussions without being attacked on my person.
