The Miracle on Grass is still to this day one of the most absolutely bonkers games of footy I've ever seen as a neutral viewer. You'd think a 52 point comeback alone from a bottom 4 side to beat a top 2 side would be significant enough, but add to it that most Brisbane goals in the last quarter were kicked on or outside the 50m arc including Ash McGrath's after the siren bomb in his 200th game no less! I'd definitely have it in the top 10, but you have a lot of other great moments in the top 10 especially from grand finals, so I can understand why. Great list mate!
Im with you mate, also a neutral and the fact Geelong where near the top of the ladder and Brisbane were fairly low at that point made it that bit more memorable
I think the Collingwood V Carlton r23, 2022 match should be way higher than #26 on this list. One team needed a win the make the top 8, the other needed a win to make top 4. Two arch rivals going at it with a monumental come back finished with a clutch goal in the dying minutes to end with a 1 point margin
I hate that I agree with you, as a Carlton fan who was at the game. Up until that last couple of minutes, it was honestly one of the best matches I've ever witnessed.
Just makes you realise how insane some of these games are, that even with recency bias there are still classics over the past 10 years that could easily be on here: - Freo with the largest ever finals comeback vs the Bulldogs - Lions vs Richmond 2022 elimination final - West Coast last minute winner vs GWS in 2016 - Collingwood holding on by a point vs GWS in 2023 prelim - Sydney holding on by a point vs Collingwood in 2022 prelim - Bulldogs beating Brisbane by a point in 2021 semi final - Either Collingwood game where they beat the Eagles by a point (2019 or 2020) - North vs Essendon elimination final in 2014 - West Coast beating Port after the siren again in 2018 - Any of the other close West Coast vs Sydney games between 2005 and 2007 - Hawthorn vs Port semi final 2001 - Either of the showdowns in 2018 (Motlop goal or Jenkins goal) And that's just the ones I can name off the top of my head. Could argue there is a slight bias towards how close a game is at the end, rather than the quality of the game (At least early in the list), but it's a really good list regardless.
That Essendon comeback is probably my favourite match of all time, although I don't think it deserves the #1 spot I think it should be much higher, that game is so much fun to watch, in such an awesome era of football, from such a fantastic football club.I'm no Essendon supporter but that team is one of my favourites of all time and this match is one of the greatest easily.
Yeah definitely was a great game, especially given it was one of the highest scoring games of all time too. It does make this list so difficult though, because so many different games are good for their own various reasons.
@@afltube yeah it really depends on what football you enjoy the most, that's the whole reason I don't put it at the top. I don't hate your list, I just disagree. it's different for everyone I guess
@@gggumball hahaha yes, you’re right, definitely is different for everyone. I think the hardest thing about a list like this is assessing the importance of different games, and working out how much finals and grand finals should get bumped up for that reason.
@@afltube yeah thats a good point. I find it too difficult so I always put them in 2 different categories. Regular season and grand finals. And then finals just don't count in my mind for whatever reason.
Such a tough undertaking. Almost an impossible task really to rate the top 50 accurately. All amazing games and you did a great job on the video. Well done
As a Collingwood supporter the 3rd and 2nd one was pretty good especially the 2nd one but the west coast v Collingwood game killed me. If anyone says “sheed from the boundary! Needs to be inch perfect it is!” I will die in tears
Carlton v Collingwood - R23, 2022 defs a top 15. - Probably one of the best scenarios going into the last match day before finals... between two classic rivals. But this list is fantastic, even the top 5 - bit of recency bias, but pretty spot on!!
Me and my footy-loving ex were talking about this just the other night. As a mad Hawks fan, we have some rippers on here, but I agree, 2018 was one out of the box. Best grannie since 1989....
Hahah yeah definitely some great hawks wins on here, I’m a Hawthorn supporter myself so I tried not to be too biased, but it’s hard not to come across that way given how many great wins we’ve had 😂😂
I'm a Geelong supporter, not just saying this because we lost, but I don't see that game the same way everyone else does.Like for the first half Hawthorn were completely dominant, it was almost boring. When we started kicking goals that's when it really started to get interesting but another thing with it is you could tell they weren't gonna get there in time. Like in '06 you honestly didn't know who would win until the very end, same as a lot of comebacks you see, Geelong kicked a goal to get a goal behind with 5 seconds left on the clock, what could they do in that time? I really enjoy watching the match regardless though, that era of football is a ton of fun to look back on
Im a hawks supporter always have been and always will be since i was born and the game against st kilda makes me proud that im a mad hawks supporter always have been and always will be and it shows as a hawthorn supporter im looking forward to 2024 and beyond GO MY MIGHTY HAWKS
This is a great list but if you don't mind me asking what was the Merger match and the Maiden grand final? Edit: I just realised the Maiden grand final, is just a normal grand final.
The Merger Match was a game in the last round of 1996 between Melbourne and Hawthorn, and at the time, there was a strong possibility that the two teams would merge the following season to make the Melbourne Hawks, so it was a very emotion fuelled night because at the time it could’ve been the last time the two fan bases got to see their team play, and as for the Crows’ maiden grand final, that just means that they won that preliminary final to reach their first ever grand final.
Agree… north kind of fell asleep mid way through the second, but they had a red hot go to keep their lead in the third, some inaccurate kicking in the 4th cost them the game Monumental effort by Essendon in the end… I feel this was 1999 GF the footy gods robbed us of
AFL era should be from 1987 onwards, there was no difference in the amount of teams that were playing in 1990 than there was in 1989. So the 89 GF should be.
Port were cheated out of that 2014 prelim and the 2017 elimination final. When both hawthorn and west coast are laughing about how they cheated it is beyond obvious that Port should have been in the 2014 grand final and the 2017 semi final.
Collingwood haters making lists is funny 😂 2018 apart from a few tiny patches was a dull game spent clumped in the eagles forward line, was a horrid watch.
I put the 2023 Grand Final second and the 2010 grand final third, the list is so clearly not biased against Collingwood. In the 2018 Grand Final West Coast came from five goals down to win the premiership with a goal from the boundary with under two minutes left to win, hence it is at number 1.
I’m a Hawthorn supporter actually so there’s no way I’d forget about 1989, but if you read the title you’ll see this video is 1990-2023, because including games pre 1990 would be too difficult as it would be hard to get footage for games from all of history, and too hard to make a list of the top 50 games if 127 seasons were included.
It’s really just because it wasn’t close enough in the end. For instance I wanted to include Hawthorn’s 2008 upset Grand Final win (maybe partly because I go for hawthorn), but it’s hard to put those sorts of games too high if it means some other insanely close games have to drop lower.
