Note: Vertical in this instance merely refers to the aspect ratio,and not necessarily the direction of movement in the game.
This list is merely my opinion. There are many games out there,and we all have our personal preferences. This is mine.
In order to make this list,the games must follow two simple rules...
1#They must be fully playable on your average MAME cabinet,and must not require any special controls or extra equipment.
2#They must closely resemble the arcade game style as much as possible,therefore RPG's (Chrono Trigger,Final Fantasy,etc.) and some Action Adventure games with higher RPG aspects (Zelda,Actraiser,etc.) do not qualify.
I do not own the rights to the characters, music, or footage used in this video,nor do I claim to.They belong to their respective owners.

Missing many of the top games but for someone who already has a decent amount of knowledge it's a good list to acknowledge some lesser knowns

Good list with a few I wasn't aware of and will be checking out, thanks for your hard work showcasing them! In my opinion many mediocre-at-best games occupy spots that would go better to neglected fan-favorites like:: ESP Ra De, Donpachi, DoDonpachi, Ikaruga, Giga Wing 1+2, Muchi Muchi Pork... But of course opinion is all a list like this or a comment on it is so I'm not judging just putting my 2c in :P

Thanks...gigawing is on here (edit: not here,but on the horizontal shmup video i made),but gigawing 2 and ikaruga were just placed on my dreamcast list and I try to avoid being repetitive if possible.

That's weird about Gigawing, I didn't notice it / it doesn't come up when I search on your list? Makes sense with the others you mentionned and of course personal preference accounts for the rest :P Good channel though, I've been checking out your vids, am into it and subbing, once again kudos

thanks for the list! found a while bunch of interesting titles. also have the conplete cave system as a whole in my setup so I just add the extra MAME ones (also leaving neogeo titles for the same reason) thanks again. Love these vids

Looks cool, but the scanlines should be running vertically (I.e. across the CRT, which is supposed to be on its side). Could do with more brightness, but otherwise a great shader set up.

I played most of these in the arcades. Started with moon cresta and galaxian. I tried revisiting using Mame on my PC. I still want the arcade experience :(

Help? Im trying to find an arcade game from the 90s I believe. My memory fades when looking so much back in time, but I think it featured multiple selectable characters, each one with its own airplane. The special thing about it was that, some poweups would make armor-like wings to attach to your plane. Each armor would grant a different fire/weapon style, and there were multiple armors too. Ring any bells?

im looking for a shooting game that has a wave and bomb power up or charge ( i cant remember exactly ) the background was like in space . and the bullets are like big white eggs simillar to batsugun

You got some real hidden gems in there, I actually added at least 15 new games from the list in my vertical cabinet. That being said, the list is seriously flawed. First there's not even one cave shmup. Maybe you should retitle the video "top non cave shmups if you don't like em because they're definitely expected on a shmup list. Also a few games are not shmups. Amazon Girl for example is more run 'n gun than shmup, and if you include those you would need to add games like Ikari Warrior, Gun Smoke, etc. And finally there are many notable omissions, even considering your personal preferences. For example, you seem to like Psykio shmups like Dragon Spirit and Gunbird, but you didn't include the most popular and better ones, like Striker 1945. Anyway good effort, but it needs a bit of refining.

I am also trying to identify a game. I thought it might have been on this list. I know it is a vertical shmup and the first level is in the desert (I think). One thing that I really enjoy about this mystery game is how it scrolls the entire level either before or after you play it (I forgot which it was). It also has like ruins or something. I thought I found it on this list a while back. Can anyone help?

I try to find one vertical arcade game that There was a yellow air or space ship Shot air and ground same time. When it Shot the ground base, it would be an upgrade for the ship in base. Ship upgraded to Red robot at the end. I need to find this game 😭

Sorry man, the screen with the games on it (the only part of the screen anyone cares about) is 10 shades darker than everything else. live and learn. I do appreciate you listing the game names in the video and in the description. time stamps for each game would be great!

find a plane shooting game Description: vertical screen, dropping bombs is a large circle assembled from many small circles, when Player 2 drops bombs together, they combine to form a large electric circle. Regarding ammo, there is one that when upgrading the last bullet will shoot out like a cloud, but around that cloud there is a blue line that bends around like dragons hugging that pillar and chasing the enemy. The bullets fired are exactly the same as the Dogyuun game, but the graphics are better

Do anyone now a vertical shmups that is raiden-ish, but when hold down on the shoot button it deploy a polygon cone, and enemies scanned by it will get barraged by missiles/laser played it around early 2000, but couldnt find it anymore :(

Too many companies made too many good shmups in the late 70s to late 90s. It's so hard to keep up with all of them. Nonetheless this is a really good list.

I was hoping to find a ship game where the graphics were very realistic for the time, I remember shooting upwards and where the final bosses were motherships. From time to time some metallic camels would appear in the middle of the screen, you had to shoot them and then a helicopter would appear that would launch a parachute and when you caught it, it would shoot a green laser. The ship could become invisible to dodge the bullets and in the last final stage, there were some Moais that you had to shoot at their eyes. It was one of the best games I had the luck to play... I can't remember the name of this game... It was a vertical shmup where you piloted a typical plane. It allowed you to fly around the screen, not just left and right (but you always automatically faced and progressed upwards). The main menu was a golden color. You could get upgrades and powerups, like a ball that orbited you. There were stages, and occasional bosses, one of which was a spider. I think it breathed fire. The background was black I believe, and it wasn't one of the ones with large, over the top explosions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My cabinet? Nothing super...just an i3 with 16gb of ram (for pc games) and a 1050gt. I would love to upgrade some,but,atm the only problems I have are occasional stutters in dolphin. It does the job for now.

So cool, thanks. OpenEmu is the best and best looking. Thank you so much, I love Mazinger Z, like Raiden, it's not a fair bullet hell like Bug Princess whereby you die every 2 seconds, the ship's slow, the hit box is large, the screen narrow (it's definitely for the arcades- a coin guzzler, lol).
