SmartDonkey’s Top 6 Yari Infantry List: #6 - Oda Long Yari Ashigaru #5 - Oda Long Yari Ashigaru #4 - Oda Long Yari Ashigaru #3 - Oda Long Yari Ashigaru #2 - Oda Long Yari Ashigaru and finally, the best Yari Infantry Unit: #1 - Fire-Bomb Throwers
In my first game in Shogun 2 (my first total war) I've played Oda (to play rp) and always recruited samouraï yari and strangely it's hard to conquer the map :D but after I watched all of you legendary campaign I realised I'm dump to do that.
you can make the yari samurai better by downloading a mod called 'yari fix' or something or other which gives yari samurai the ability to go into yari wall, making them a (sorta) worthy investment
The Date bulletproof samurai is the only unique unit wwith an unit cap, while more powerful ones (shimazu heavy gunners, donderbus cav...) are unlimited. It looks like an oversight.
of course use artillery on them and that will break apart the wall real fast not only in forcing them to come to you but land a clean hit on them and there will be plenty of holes in there ranks. and they drop real fast especially the long yari ones.
@@MrSmartDonkeyLP Thanks, I was wondering if they were worth the investment. Frankly, i love strategy games where even the basic units (in this case, ashigaru) have purpose and functionality even into the late game. It feels like the more advanced units are adding nuance complexity to your tactics as the game progresses, rather than simply reinventing the wheel.
While I've only been watching you for a week or two now, I've already seen how much you love the Yari Ashigaru. Unrelated question, but since you mentioned it....is multiplayer still even a thing with this game? As a long time total war fan, I'm curious of expanding into that realm of the total war gameplay
I've been a long time total war fan and i play shogun 2 relatively regularly however chances of finding someone to do campaign with is extremely low unless you have a friend that's up for it and avatars conquest mode is full of veteran players who have the best stat units and the occasional noob unfortunately...
Ha, I don't care how old a video is, if someone's watching it now and leaves a comment that's worth replying too, I'll do it. Glad you appreciate the gesture though! :D
Quick question for a noob player like me: My campaign map in Shogun 2 isn't a parchment-esque thingy like Donkey's. Like... Its all fog and black instead of showing a map with outlined provinces. Is it a graphics setting or a mod or something?
question If there are only 6 yari units, why limit this list to a top five instead of a just best to worse since it's only one more unit and at most like 3-4 more minutes
@@MrSmartDonkeyLP Well , I've played this game for nearly 4K hours . And I believe the most different between us is I played is "Multiplayer" mode . And I found it had couples of bugs and unbalanced changes .
Nor do I, which is why I haven’t done it yet, since I never really use them. Hopefully this series will give me some experience with them all so by the end of it I’ll be able to make a meaningful list.
or matchlocks XD course i wouldn't have em unsupported, by of course my own yari ashigaru, but thats another story. just love recreating Oda Nobunagas favoritism of matchlocks when playing the Oda.
@@MrSmartDonkeyLP no worries i really mean it :) i've watched a lot of your channel and this is the first time actually commenting. I really enjoy your let's plays either shogun or any other game and always have a good laugh. Your top lists on shogun are really detailed and really well edited and you can tell the work and time you put into this not to mention the way it helped me on my personal shogun 2 experience and it just bothers me that such good content it's left with less attention than it actually deserves. Anyway keep up with your channel and best of luck on the future :)
Rank cavalry or ranged units next, (horse archers should probably go on the ranged list). Also please do clan over view on the rise of the samurai factions.
This one may be a bit difficult to give a title to, but how about a list of the top alternative units to use in Shogun 2? In other words no ashigaru, no katana samurai, naginata samurai, bow warrior monks or yari calvary. Could also use a ranking of all missile units, siege included.
Setiawan Setiawan It doesnt work, an army unupgraded oda long yari with archer support can easily destroy a death-stack of fully upgraded shimazu katana samurai.
When I played the Ottomo I only used Yari Samurai, along side their over power bow Samurai, because I trough that they were the best unit of this specification, I had no idea that they were better units of this kind.
It’s the other way around, they get better with veterancy due to their larger numbers. They start out worse than regular Yari Ashigaru but after gaining some experience they become better. I talk about it in my Ikko Ikki overview.
What about buffed Yari Samurai? I've got Satsuma late game Otomo pumping out Level 5 Yari & Naginata Samurai with 11 and 15 armour respectively. It might be orth noting however that I'm running Darthmod and not vanilla so the anti cav bonus for both are nearly identical. Love the videos man, keep it up!
The funny thing about yari samurai is that even nuns are better at anti-cav. The nuns have a lower bonus against cav but far higher stats, including morale, so they do better. Give them 1-2 upgrades vs cav in mp and they are astounding horse choppers. 🔪 🐴
i kinda like yari ronin, using the dirty cheap province buffed, chevron loan sword for frontline, yari ronin is best for counter flank, more compact, cheap and much stronger than yari samurai. sadly not only lost their master, they lost ability to rapid adcance as well
how do you counter long yari-heavy armies? attacvking long-yari-heavy stacks in sieges, how do you counter them? tear them apart by range? that's tough with the fund reduction to get any worth-while ranged units
Yari Samurai is absolutely much better than yari ronin. Their rapid advance ability allows them to catch cav and do the job they were meant to do, not to mention it helps them turn the tide when their stamina is low. Yari samurai lose to prepared yari walls, yes, but only barely, and they destroy yari ashigaru in any other situation.
Melee Attack 15 Melee Defence 18 Charge Bonus 10 Anti Cav Bonus 50 Armor 2 Morale 15 Uses Long Yaris Rapid advance Warcry Yari Charge An offensive version of Yari Wall, the front row will move at the fastest possible speed with their Spears thrust forward. Upkeep 150 Cost 850
Looks like Top Gear or The Grand Tour. Definitely a weird recording glitch and not something I put in there on purpose, I've had this thing a couple of times where my recording software will pick up my second monitor or what's behind the game for a split second.
@@MrSmartDonkeyLP 1:18 So you didn't say Yari Ashigaru, you said just "Yari." Later you say that the Yari Samurai and Ronin are anti-cav units and Yari Ashigaru is a line unit.
Top Gear, I was watching it in the background while recording the footage for this video, somehow the recording took a snap of it and I missed it when editing. :P
I feel like he misses the point of the Yari Samurai. They are better at killing cavalry than any other infantry without rapid advance, and they have the morale to stay in the fight for a long time. They are the anvil not the hammer so their low offence is not a problem when used properly. They can easily defeat yari ashigaru unless you charge straight into their spear wall like a moron. I guess the yari ashigaru are great for exploiting bad AI but as far as a units overall capabilities yari samurai are an excellent unit.
