There is no such thing as the best hiking boots, each set of hiking boots has a number of features and fitting options just like each individual hiker has unique characteristics. You therefore can only ever get the best hiking boot for a specific individual, given a specific set of hiking or walking conditions.
This video aims to explain the 7 main features I consider when I am buying a new pair of hiking boots so that you can begin to understand what to look for when viewing hiking boots when out shopping.

After watching countless 'best hiking boot' videos this was the most informative and helpful of any of them! As you say there is no correct boot for everyone. But listing the features you need to look for and why is a great idea and big help so thanks very much. I am much wiser now and know what to look for when I visit my local outdoor shop to try on some boots!

The only thing you didn't address, and extremely important to me, is how well the outer sole performs on wet and/or mossy surfaces like wood and stone. I live in Japan and encounter that a LOT!

Great video... I love hiking boots... Civilian and army surplus... For me the best are the meindel Island and altberg Tethera....

Agree, My 2 main boots are German Para boots in Winter, and German Army Desert boot in summer which are Gortex and suede, I got both new for about 60 quid each, cant buy anything close for civi boots, if walking on the flat in summer, walking shoes are fine and agree with points about boots weakening ancles, so tend to wear boots only when on hills carrying loads. Best way to avoid turning ancles is to use trekking poles. Got Son Dutch Army boots, they were great value and support.

Hi. Great vid. Those Altburgs are odd boots. I bought a pair in a size 9 one year, from our local army surplus place, for work. They fitted ok, but after a year and a half or so, the soles wore out. I went back and bought another pair but the ‘revised’ size 9 seemed to be smaller, so I bought a size 10, as there were no half sizes. In the size 10, I noticed that the lacing system was different, and the lace lock was in a different place. Needless to say, I had to put a thicker insole in them,and lace them up differently to lock in my ankle. After a year, the rand around the bottom of the boot separated from the leather. Won’t be buying them again. What is your Veiw on the German Military Para boot? Have you ever tried them for walking, hiking? I had a old surplus pair in the 80’s for motorcycling, but have wondered if you have ever tried them. All the best.👍🏾🇬🇧

The sizing on the Ex-Issue boots is to MoD standards rather than Altbergs. I know there was two variations of the defender but wasn't aware the sizing changes. Could it be that your first pair was a size 9L and the second pair was a 9? The L version is wider. I got caught that way with cold weather boots, didn't realise they were 8N rather than 8 and they were too narrow. Yeah, MoD don't do half sizes, they issue a spacer instead to take the volume out. If you buy Altberg from the factory, they do various boots in half sizes and different width fittings, much better. Odd the rand went though unless they had been in storage for years. I got my first pair about 10 years ago and other than the sole needing replacing, they are still in good nick. Sounds like you were unlucky. Not tried the German para's. I know they were popular in the 80's and 90's not given them a go.

this is a great video...but i live on the pennine moors and do a ton of off the beaten track hiking through hilly land and marshy boggy land... one of the main concerns for hikers around here is waterproof ...the problem is ...most boots only just cover the ankle...wellingtons are the best but dont offer enough grip and not that good for stony ground and climbing slippery muddy slopes

Have a look at military boots, if you go for high liability combat high they are typically quite a lot taller than regular walking boots or failing that look at Altberg country boots, these are higher again. www.altberg.co.uk/boots/country-boots16 Hope that helps.

I own a pair of altberg jungle boots and they r great,ve ry comfortable. I also have north ridge traverse classic leather boots,which were very comfortable straight out of the box,and served me well,but I found they really lack padding for longer hikes with heavy bag on mixed terrain. I recently tried salomon quest element just around in town,and like quiet a few ppl said this thing has no grip on wet surfaces,I nearly fell on a flat wet stone plate by doing just normal walking,I won't give them another chance. And wearing them first felt like I fitted plastic pipes on my feet. I m in search of durable supportive lightweight boot,for 3 season hikes in the hills. So many options there. I m thinking why don't I go with altbergs .

They are good boots. If you don't go the surplus route you can get them in half sizes and 5 different width fittings but will pay £220(ish), if you go the surplus route you can get them much cheaper, but they don't do half sizes and only do normal or 'Large volume) on width. (I think they might still do a 'Narrow' but not sure). Its best to go up a size if you are not sure.

Army boots come with useless insoles.. I always deal them out....

That was always my assumption too. When I got my Haix boots I went through about 5 different pairs of insoles and none of them were right, from the cheap to the more pricey ones that Altberg sell. In the end in desperation I tried them with the original insoles that came with my Altberg defenders and those were the ones that worked. Never would have guessed that, but I didn't like them in the altbergs for some reason!

Nubuck leather, give them a wax and it makes them more waterproof. I use meindl sportwax for my Scarpa Trej gtx low volume boots. Warning ⚠️ when u wax nubuck leather it darkens the leather and it is irreversible. Meindl sportwax is made by grangers. Grangers g wax is thicker than sportwax. I always thought about altberg boots. I have slim feet, narrow heel. Medium width toebox.

Agreed, waxing nubuck does make it more waterproof, but my own tests show it still wets out faster than full-grain leather, particularly Anfibio leather. I have tried Sport wax, grangers and leder gris on the Meindl's.

Altberg boots would fit you well especially the sneeker and tabbing boots.

I tried on the tabbing boot. Too much volume in boot. Sent them back.

Fantastic I thought grangers looked similar to the meindel wax but half the price.... Yes thicker and takes longer to absorb...

I use the same boots for years never let me down always fit like a glove and support in the right places spending years in the desert environment I never took waterproofing into consideration but my choice boot for all is mt trusty old payroll boot by kangol you just carnt get better if you don't mind wet feet now and then sometimes it's the only way to wash your feet lol I have a pair of stream boots I paid 300 quid for they are waterproof but no where near as comfortable as patrol just how it is spent best part of 40years in boots retiring from military service in 2022 prove me wrong lol only joking great posts Sgt as you were carry on
