like the features, setup was difficult for some of my devices (August Door lock, ru-vid.comUgkxhB5YOMNj04GuoAosExygP4cH-dKeb4aB Bose speaker)... but all switches and outlets (5), thermostat, tankless water heater. Unfortunately all I can do is turn on/off Bose. It doesn't support volume or changing channels, but I believe that is due to the particular speaker I have.... Worth getting if you already have other devices to use it with... I don't sit around and ask Alexa questions much so that doesn't really matter to me....

We NEED a thread enabled light switch that has a “smart bulb” mode. The smart mode would ensure the bulb has power all the time but still provide physical controls. Being mains powered, it would make an awesome Thread network in any home where it’s used in multiple rooms. All with NO HUB.

It's not Thread enabled but LIFX makes a pretty good smart switch that is similar to what you're asking for. It only works with LIFX bulbs but it's just not feasible to create smart bulb compatibility with every brand. Just ask Brilliant.

Just installed 8 Wemo dimmers and second gen light switch with no problems in the last month. They are fast and look better to me than any others sold. Nanoleaf light strips seem to be the best for me esp having thread.

I use a lot of Wemo switches and plugs. They aren’t as user friendly to connect, but once installed I have found them very reliable. I will say that my biggest mistake was the Ring doorbell. I should have found one that was already HomeKit compatible.

Great list Brad! I just got my first Eve Energy with Thread installed and it is FAST! I also use a Meross Outdoor Smart Plug and it has been pretty solid for me controlling my mini pool pump and some outdoor rope lights.

Just started my journey of a smart home. Fortunately, I bought 4 of the Meross SmartPlugs. 2 of them set up easily, had some trouble with the other 2. After some googling, I had to make sure my phone wasn’t connected to the 5 ghz WiFi. After that, they set up. Glad to see these were a good choice in your video even if they are a bit finicky. At first I set up my HomeKit using a much-older iPad as the hub, but yesterday, I bought my first HomePod mini. Needless to say, it will not be the last 1 I buy. 😂 Thank you for your very informative videos. I subscribed.

Hi Michelle! I'm so excited to hear you've started your HomeKit journey! It sounds like you are off to a great start with the HomePod mini and the Meross Smart Plugs. I haven't had the same issue connecting the Meross smart plugs (when your phone is connected to the 5GHz band), but I've heard others that have. Luckily setup is usually just a one-time thing. Now that you have your HP mini, you can also take advantage of some Thread accessories! Creating a smart home is a lot of fun, so enjoy the process!

Thanks for the nice video! I live in Europe, so the products sometimes differ. I myself use the Nuki (no-key😉) door lock. Received 1 notification from Nuki in 3 years: “you are leaving the house, do you want to lock the front door?” Shouldn't actually be allowed, but still nice to get a notification. So be happy with it! I also use the Tado thermostat and thermostatic valves. Handy to heat each room separately! Because I also have sensors on the windows, the heating switches off when the windows are open and back on when they are closed. Oh yes, I have an Aqara water sensor on my terrace. If the attic window is open and it rains, I get a notification. This way my parquet floor will not be damaged! Greetings from Belgium, looking forward to your next video!

Well done for naming and shaming some of the crud products out there, as well as highlighting the good ones. Would definitely add the Meross LED Light Strip to the Avoid category and the Nanoleaf LED Strip to the Buy category. I also wanted to share the 3 basic principles I now abide by after similar experiences 1. Must have native HomeKit integration, 2. Can be manually controlled, 3. Must use Thread or Zigbee for low-powered devices and Ethernet or Wifi (limiting were possible) for powered devices. Would be great to hear your and the community's thoughts on this too. Keep up the good work!

Hi Liam, I agree with the Nanoleaf LED strip, good call! Thanks for sharing your feedback! Your 3 basic principles are solid especially #1 - Homekit! Thread or zigbee is ideal & fast! Sometimes it’s unavoidable to connect with bluetooth or wifi but do carefully consider the connnection technology, especially with low powered/battery operated devices. You’ve got the foundation for a solid smart home!

I'm curious to know why you think the Meross LED Strip should be avoided. All my smart bulbs are Meross and I just got the light strip. They do what I need them to do, turn on and off on command and by programming them. My only complaint for all of these is they're a pain to set up and forget about controlling the colours with the Homekit app. However the Meross app sets up the colour and brightness fine.

@@polystormstudio Aside from the two points you mentioned, up until the most recent firmware update, I would get a frequent “No response” status in HomeKit and the strip would inadvertently turn itself off and on. The last two issues have lessened, but I still stand firm with my recommendation not to buy for the points you mentioned, plus the poor colour and low brightness, compared with Nanoleaf, Eve and Hue strips. It’s ok for an inexpensive HK accent light, but not recommend for task or ambient lighting which have increased lumen and/or colour accuracy requirements.

Hey Brad, excellent video! The only issue I’ve got, and not because I found it bad, is with the Logitech doorbell. If only I could purchase one in Canada! I own more than thirty Lutron Caseta light switches and they are definitely the base of my SmartHome system. I have also had Wemo switches and smart plugs and have found them poor as well. I wouldn’t buy anymore of them. Take care and keep putting out great videos!

Hey Neil, I hear you on the Logitech Doorbell. I tried getting information for Logitech on a future release date to Canada but not surprisingly, I didn't get any answers. I'm sure it's only a matter of time because they come to the Canadian market, or we start to see more competition with Matter coming soon. Great list, agree and have most. My favs are Ecobee and Nanoleaf products, the office is an essentials & under bed are two lightrips. I cheat and also use Hoobs. One area of the home that I found lacking was the garage door opener, mine has MyQ but I’ve been playing with the Refoss Smart WiFi Garage door opener AK version that you can pick up for 45-60 depending on Amazon’s mood of the day in Canada in US you get the Meross…The key is to use the Meross app, not the suggested one. It’s simple in its operation and has been solid in my HomeKit setup for 2 months, I’ve also installed a few for friends and neighbours. Who doesn’t want to control their garage door with CarPlay😀

🐝 Ecobee and 🍃Nanoleaf are great choices! I haven’t tried Hoobs out yet but I have been tempted to bring some products (like holiday lights) into Homekit. Maybe this year! Agree, it would be great to see more #Homekit options for the garage door. We also use MyQ and haven’t had any issues. @@TheUnofficialMaker Can you “communicate” with those sensors with your phone via an app? If so, it’s possible that the hub that controls those wired sensors could talk to hoobs. Tough to say without more details.

VOCOlinc put out a beta for their L3 bulbs that included adaptive lighting, but that was almost 6 months ago. I’d like that software, since I have several of those bulbs.

You should have asked me Brad before you bought Wemo! Haha. Wemo plugs were the second smart home product I bought after a thermostat so that could be 8 or more years ago. Way before Homekit and Hue. They always dropped off and I was constantly resetting them. So they have not improved over the years - too bad. More recently I had a Wemo switch for my porch light which also had connectivity problems and did not fit easily into the 3 gang box. Next was an Eve switch which fit but was not responsive most of the time. Guess what - I ended up with Caseta switch which works perfectly.

It seems we are not alone with the Wemo issues...... Interesting feedback on the Eve switch. I have one that I'm hoping to test out soon. It would also be nice if Eve adds Thread to their switches in the future. Can't argue with Caseta though - they just work! Thanks for watching!

@@TheBradLloyd I forgot to mention that one of the Eve switches was in my garage. Never worked. It was just to far from my home hub I guess which at that time was my Apple TV. No excuse for the one in my front hall. They might work better with HomePod.

Here's my adventure with a wemo plug. I had some difficulty setting up the Wemo smart plug with my iPhone even though I followed the instructions exactly. Despite resetting the smart plug to factory defaults, making sure I was 2.4Ghz wifi on all devices, and using both the Wemo app and the Home app separately, neither the Wemo app nor the Home app could find the new device. Here's the workaround I found somewhere on the internet, I should have taken better notes: 1. Reset the Wemo Mini (by pressing and holding the power button and plugging it in - release the power button in about 10 seconds, when the LED starts to blink White - it blinks White after it blinks orange). 2. Note the Setup Code from the label. 3. Open Home App, tap on the '+' sign on the top right, and when it opens the camera to scan your setup label/QR Code, select 'Don't have a code or can't scan' and enter the code manually and retry Setup/Pairing. That worked for me, but I will avoid Wemo in the future.

Sir you nailed it!! I had the wemo plug and I would not stay connected and one day it just stop working. I wasn’t mad at all because I had planned on replacing that plug anyways. Next up is my Vocolinc diffuser. Once (sometimes twice) a month I have to reset it because it won’t stay WiFi connected. Not sure which one is worse, the wemo or Vocolinc, either way I will never spend money on either product ever again.

Totally agree with Wemo, and many others (though not all) seem to agree as well. I haven't had too many issues with the Vocolinc diffuser, though their led strip has been awful.

I have 10 of the Wemo light switches. No issues with them at all. None are in bedrooms due to the light on the switch. They work with my scenes without any problems as well. I did have problems with plug. I have the August Smart lock and love it. Simple to use and the install was easy. For my doorbell I have Eufy. But it doesn’t work with HomeKit so will definitely check out the Logitech.

I’d avoid the Insignia garage door opener. The performance is spotty at best, doesn’t stay connected, and sometimes returns an open status when it’s actually closed. Not something you want to see when you’re four hours away from your house.

I have had pretty much zero issues with my Wemo smart plugs. Have never had to reinstall on HomeKit. I have 5. Once in a great while I have to reset them (normally due to a random power outage). Aqara products have been both good and ok - depending on the device. The alarm/door sensors have worked great. The motion sensors - hit and miss. 2 work perfect, my third one I gave up on after multiple attempts to get it to stay connected. Ugh very frustrating. Great video!

Hi Thomas - Thanks for the comment! Glad to see you have had better luck with Wemo than I have! Aqara has worked well for me. If you are having issues my suggestion would just be making sure your motion sensor isn't too far away from the Hub. I was having some issues that improved once I relocated the Hub.

On the Weiser lock, I would say that mine (I also have 2) have been pretty solid, more so now that I put a HomePod Mini in the garage by the one that was being a little in-responsive. The keypad always works so even without connectivity I know I am getting in. My biggest issue is with the door jam and the movement that happens with cold weather that causes more resistance on the edge of the deadbolt (reports a jab, even when it actually does close). A big per peeve of mine though is the screw on the bottom of the unit that needs to be taken out to change the batteries (try accessing it with a door knob below the deadbolt).

@@TheBradLloyd The HomePod Mini had the same effect on my MyQ garage door opener. The issue that I now appear to be having is slow response times from a variety of devices, including HomePods. With 3 Apple TV 4K’s, 1 big HomePod, and now 6 HomePod Mini’s in the configuration, I am starting to wonder if the master hub is either getting confused, or if it is being asked to control far to many devices (add 6 Meross switches, Lutron Casetta, Hunter Douglas blinds, the locks, TV’s, couple of Nanoleaf bulbs, a HomeBridge for my Denon receiver, and likely some others that I have forgotten). Today, I ordered the Aquara hub along with a switch and door sensor to try out. Did so prior to catching this video but happy to hear about your side recommendation. My interest is in seeing if the ZigBee devices can work nicely for the sensors.

Great Video! I can vouch for the Level Lock. I had the 1st gen August but it kept losing connection in Homekit and eventually just crapped out. The newer versions may be better but I decided to make the switch to Level and haven't had an issue yet.

I’m having the opposite experience with Level. I use the Bolt and, at first, it was used in my front door. However, my wife did not like replacing her high-end locks and we had to switch it back. That meant my Bolt was relegated to my side gate. I have the new Apple 4K TV within 18 feet of it and a HomePod above it by about 15 feet. Neither work to obtain a connection- AT ALL. I have had to buy a separate HomePod that sits in the corner of my garage immediately on the other side of the gate. What’s worse is that this only permits a 50/50 likely of connection. I am about ready to call it quits with my Bolt. As I’ve heard somewhere, even 98% is not good enough for certain household products.

Thanks for sharing this useful list! I totally agree about Belkin Wemo, especially the electrical plug. While I’ve had good Belkin products in the past, their Wemo line of “smart” home products are pretty dumb. Nothing but trouble.

Biggest difference between Ecobee lite and the regular version is that the full price version can operate your humidifier on your furnace, which is worth the extra price. I am 100% on the same thought as you for door locks, I am holding out for a newer Thread version with apple keys

Yes - good point. The Ecobee Lite also can't control an HRV, but in some cases additional wiring is still required to make that feature work. Hopefully we see some new locks with Thread & Apple Keys before the end of the year!

Great list! Been looking at Caseta for some time now and trying to just lay it all out between keeping traditional switches and integrating the Caseta alongside it. That and I've got so many 3-pole switches ... kind of annoying.

You won't be disappointed with Caseta. The Pico remotes are a convenient and cost effective solution for 3-way switches.

@@BryanEsler Hi Bryan - Most of the plates I use are "builder grade", with visible screws. It's on my list to eventually replace them with something more sleek. The Lutron plates are usually only single gang.

I have a few older plugs that require the Wemo Homekit bridge. Even that goes unresponsive. It's gotten so bad that I use a non Wemo smart plug to reboot it once a week!

Hi JP - Unfortunately I don't have much advice to offer. Philips hue has a line of outdoor rated lights, but I don't specifically see temperature ratings They are pricey but probably your best bet. I'm hoping to test some basic bulbs this winter. I'm in Southern Ontario so similar weather.

Good video, however, I do disagree about the Belkin reliability I haven’t had an issue. I have 3 switches and 10 smart plugs and two outdoor smart plugs. I wonder if you have tried using their hub with it maybe that’s why I am so lucky! I agree with everything else thought great video Brad!

I have several two switch light switch panels that incorporate traditional toggle light switches and traditional rotary dimmers. I want to control the traditional toggle light switch ( exterior lights) , and I do not want to replace the functioning dimmers. Great video. I followed your link for the Lutron Aurora. I am interested in using this to control Nanoleaf bulbs, however the description and comments on the Amazon Canada page indicates it only works with Hue bulbs. Can you confirm that this will work through the Caseta hub to control the Nanoleaf bulbs?

No need for a smart switch. Often smart switches cause issues with smart bulbs so best to leave it alone. You could always add a smart button like flic or an Aqara mini switch if you wanted to.

Great video Brad! I think this may be my favorite to date. I have either already invested in or have all of your top 7 on my HomeKit Wishlist. I’ve wanted the Logitech Circle View doorbell for quite sometime. However, as you mentioned, it is not available in Canada. I do plan to purchase one in Orlando when we visit Disney World in May. I did however pickup the Logitech Circle View Security Camera yesterday and can’t wait to get it setup! Thanks for another great video! Thank you! It depends on what you are looking for. If you have a thread border router (like a HP mini), then Nanoleaf Essentials is great, and not too expensive. If you don't have a budget then you can't go wrong with Philips Hue. I have a video on the Onvis light strip which is addressable, though you have to get it from Amazon.com which means USD and duty/import fees. I'm starting to test the Meross light strip now which is reasonably priced so after I've had some time I'll do a video review for that as well.

Generally No. I tried this once at the start of my Smart Home journey and it didn't go well. I used a Luton Caseta switch with a Philips Hue bulb and it just kept flashing. Both "smart" devices compete with each other, and just don't work... I'm a fan of the Lutron Aurora though, because it's a smart switch designed to work with Philips Hue. It works amazing, but only with Hue lights.

The Nanoleaf panels are supposed to be a Thread border router (with a future firmware update I believe) so this may be possible, but I think it will need to be tested to be 100% sure!

Have you done a comparison of Eve and VOCOlinc contact sensors? From a newbies POV it appears Eve is the high end and VOCOlinc is the budget option. My experience with VOCOlinc contact sensors so far is they go "offline" because they rely on Bluetooth, which is problematic. (I have to stand in front of my door for it to even show up as "online" on my iPhone.) So I was worried I'd have to switch over to Eve for better performance--but they are expensive. (It's also confusing because while you included So first, I ordered a HomePod Mini--arriving some time today--in hopes that it would cure the "offline" trouble; and I'd get all those other perks with the Mini that you have explained in your videos.

Hi Mavirek, The newest Eve contact sensors work so well because they use Thread. The HP mini is a Thread border router. The Vocolinc sensors use BLE so you won't get the benefits of Thread unfortunately. If you need something reliable, Eve is worth the money. A budget option would be Aqara, but you will need a Hub. Hope that helps.

Avoid the Rachio lawn watering system . They have had problems maintaining homekit connection. Tech-support says they have been working on it. They have promised the solution is right around the corner for years.

The Eve Weather device has an operating range that goes down to only -18C (0 Fahrenheit), which means it's not viable for most places in Canada. It might even get permanently damaged below -18C. The same thing is probably true for most smart doorbells.

I've had my ring doorbell for about 5 years here in Calgary and its seen -30c every year and -35c several times. its powered thru the doorbell wiring, but for some reason the battery needs charging at least twice each winter. but I still wouldn't get another one due to its really slow response time and multiple false alarms daily, even after adjusting the range and pattern.

Just my opinion, but I think native to HomeKit is always better when possible. With Matter, we should see more competition and more supported products in general, so I expect less expensive options will come.

I have a lot of Wemo and like you I had the switch leave homekit and had to re-add it. All the plugs have been phased out for Meross and I'm not having much better luck there either. All that being said, maybe it's the mesh network? Devices on the 2.4ghz on node A while phone is on 5 ghz on node B? No idea.

Hi Craig, it's possible it's a wifi issue, but it shouldn't be an issue with your phone being on 5ghz. Going with something like Hue or Aqara (Zigbee), or Eve (Thread) should help a lot!

My experience with Wemo is really bad. My VOCOlinc lightbulbs were not working well until I added a mesh wifi now they work fine including the light strip (I was demanding to much on my router).

Hey Matthew, thanks for watching. You’re right the Aurora isn’t exposed to Homekit but because hue is, it works great. The main benefit is that the light switch remains in the ON position allowing you to control your hue smart lights with Siri or the physical dimmer on the wall. I couldn’t agree more that a product like this that is compatible with Nanoleaf essentials would be great!

I want to put a lot of emphasis on WiFi. I lived in an older house for many years with Hue and all Wifi switches working 98% of the time. Moved to a new neighborhood with over 48 neighboring signals and 97% used 2.4Ghz band! Nothing worked or responded half the time. I removed over 24 Wifi devices to Lutron or other based hubs like Aqara, now I am 100% working 100% of the time. I run every end device now like laptops, gaming consoles, TV, etc. that I can on 5Ghz wifi 4-6. Only have 3 2.4Ghz Wifi homekit devices.

Sorry to ask, I lost confidence of these automation devices. I successfully set up a switch and a few Honeywell thermostats with HomeKit, they worked well for a few months, then they become offline and I have to set up from beginning again. I have a Amazon plug, it also worked for one month or two, then become offline. I tried to forgot the device and set up again, it just died. I have some plugs of other brands that work with alexia, also worked for a month or two, then I need to set up again. I just got annoyed, I am busy dealing with smart devices failed. The more I used, the more trouble. Do you guys have these problems? I am using fiber network and all computer devices had no problem with internet.

Wow, I can see why you would feel discouraged. I can't speak to Amazon devices, but in general, that should not happen. You said you have Fiber, so your internet is strong, but make sure you have a solid WiFi router as well. You may also want to try some non-wifi devices like Zigbee and Thread and see how well that works. Good luck!

I've had Wemo smart plugs for years and they always work. One thing I've done is set static IP in my wifi antenna for these plugs so they always get the same IP address assigned. otherwise, no complaints. Maybe this is how to make these things work all the time. however, I did struggle until this became my go-to practice with wifi devices. Hopefully, this helps anybody

What is the best way to configure homekit, for a family? So when someone says, "turn my room lights off" it knows which room lights to turn off...

If you want to say "turn off my lights" and have Siri know where you are, then you would want a HomePod in that room. The HP (mini) is assigned a room, so when you ask it to turn the lights off, it will know the room you are referring to. Creating zones in HomeKit is also a helpful way of naming areas you want your lights off. Hope that helps!

Lutron Caseta is a bad recommendation for switches because they are outrageously expensive. I think they even require hubs. I’ll take your word for it on reliability, having not owned them. I’ve been adding Meross switches throughout my house. They work every single time, fast, and roughly $20/each. A basic Lutron switch is $60. Why pay that? I get it if you had a good experience with them but man that’s a rough recommendation. Chuh-Ching!

Gotta disagree with the opinion on Wemo. I feel they're actually better than Meros. Their 3 way light switch is fantastic and I used their single light switches in our bedroom and they're fantastic. There is an occasional hick up but it's easily fixable with a simple resetting of the wifi. I'm curious if your wifi signal just isn't the best and is causing your issues? Used to have some issues with Netgear as our router and switch to a much better TP Link router to improve overall signal for our home. Suggesting a switch that costs double the wemo just because it's 2% more reliable seems pretty ridiculous. Typically you'd only want a smart switch in a few locations at most: main living space, Kitchen, and master bedroom. All other areas could be easily addressed by using another product you mentioned: The Nanoleaf essentials lightbulb. I use these for our outdoor lighting (Garage, entrance, and back porch) and they can be easily paired in homekit to function based off of a homekit enables security device (like eufy security cameras). Strongly recommend people give the Amazon starter kit from Wemo a chance. You get a lightswitch and a smart plug for just $40. If you go with Casada switches you're gonna end up spending $60 on the switch alone. If you have prime, give Wemo a shot....this is bad press IMO and I'd hate for people to waste money.

I have a very automated home and was using the Netgear Orbi wifi mesh, but with mixed success and major frustrations. Recently I moved to a Asus AIMesh setup that supports Wifi6 (not WiFi6e) and the results are significantly better. The router is so important as you add more and more devices.

@@TheBradLloyd as I said I bought 2 lightbulbs for Living room. They started fine but never connected correctly with Homekit and would always get the ‘not responding error’. I had to go to Nanoleaf app to reset the connection and it would work okay for a while and then start issues again until a point where they just stopped working completely. The light strip was bad from the start…I had trouble connecting the lightstrip apater to the Led strip …and when I got it it would just come loose every once in a while even when glued together with a cellotape. Never reliable. I got rid of all three of them and just are sitting in my storage now 🙁

Logitech Circle video doorbell not recommended in cities with constant high temps over 98 degrees Living in Las Vegas the camera shuts down , showing it needs to cool down, happens all the time. Our temp were nearing 100 & will reach 115 degrees in the shade, night temp will stay above 98 degrees making the camera use less. Logitech has agreed and is refunding the cost, as I got the camera in December and worked fine till it became hot. It took lots of strong arming them until they cried uncle Please note it does not work in the heat, other times it’s great. Just got the ARLO video doorbell works fine ,so do my Eufy cameras in direct Sun exposure But ARLO doorbell does not support HomeKit unless you buy the ARLO hub $100 plus add cost, but still will not record and save to apple. Good marketing as all of this is not mentioned in their site. So not truly HomeKit compatible Buyers beware

Sorry but Nanoleaf Essential bulbs are total crap. I have used three A19 Bulbs; they drop connection after sometime. You have to reset the Nanoleaf bulbs and add them to HomeKit all over again. After sometime it becomes frustrating. By the way, i have a HomePod Mini and Apple TV on Thread nearby. Long story short, I have ditched Nanoleaf products and moved over to Philips Hue with hub. Abit pricey but they work beautifully. Over the last 6 months, I have zero connection issues with Philips Hue bulbs.

Yep, don’t invest in Wemo. All of my light switches and many of my outlets are fitted with Wemo products. Constantly devices missing and I often have to disable Wemo skill and reenable on Alexa.

Yes, sadly I agree. Hopefully they can improve their products in the future.
