I would like to see a huge logo redesign with multiple steps in between. That would be tough for companies that mainly focus on physical products. But for digital first companies, that would be fun and actually practical. Sometimes people just hate change. Even if the new one is obviously better. But let say you make a redesign, and then intentionally create loads of intermediate steps. And then move a step every season. Then after 2 years, announce the transition to everybody. That would be fun.
@@li_tsz_fung , it would but might be hard to implement cuz most designs keep up with trends. You can't go flat when others go 3D. It'll jump to the eye.
Back in 2005, when RU-vid was founded, cathode ray tubes were still common in households for television, but large Plasma and later LED screens were already taking over and with them the switch from 4:3 to 16:9 formats. Thus the tube was no longer a tube, and the blown-up version of the 4:3 rectangle less and less a symbol for an actual TV set. It makes sense to reimagine it as a button with rounded corners.
The modern Warner Bros. logo is better for the Pictures division (though I really dislike how the on screen version already looks really dated), but I love what they did on the 2019 logo. Still exists on the side of the Blu rays for now, but I was hoping they’d keep it for specific things that matched it better, like the Animation division.
Honestly yeah agree the Warner logo is classic like the MGM logo with lion. It's just something that's been around for so long that changing it made no sense.
Wow, this video has exceptional pacing! I was drawn in with every new addition to the list, and none of them overstayed their welcome. You provided some really valuable insight, I hadn't realized that Warner Bros. switched back and I loved your commentary on how the RU-vid redesign was very "Google." Can't wait to see what you have coming next!
RU-vid just recommended this masterpiece of a video, bro with the kind of content ur producing, and now with yt on ur side, ur gonna blow up, atb man love the vid;)
The ABC logo really isn't futureproofing, it's less readable. All they should have done is removed the 3D black circle and replaced it with solid black, but if I recall correctly, they have used a version like that in the past. You're right that it'll need a new redesign in a few years.
The old flat one had been used for 45 straight years with zero issue, and stayed on certain things like the Burbank building where they’re headquarted. They could’ve just returned to that but Disney went “nah” and it’s a weird choice
@@itsreeyah no, that specific flat version of the logo lasted 45 years. 1962 - 2007. The flat version was phased out after then in favor of the 3D version
The current parent company wanted to bring back its logo in classic form because 89% of audiences love the older logo than the 2019 logo, so CG&H redesign WB logo according to the classic 1948 logo. Anyways, Warner Bros. Sans font is the only element from the 2019 branding that still remain in use for the current branding.
Speaking of media company logos, perhaps the boldest and most controversial media company logo update in my country was the 1992 update of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s “gem” logo (commonly known as the “exploding pizza”). The original mid-century logo was designed in a hurry but it was still exceptional. The problems with it began when networks started putting their logo in the corner of the screen, and the CBC logo was too intricate to use for that purpose, so they decided to give it a “make-under” by retaining the basic shape but removing many of its pieces. Like the ABC logo shown here, the circles in the original logo had a slit to stand for “C”; that was removed in the update, and I think it was a good choice. It may not have been popular at launch, but the current CBC logo is iconic (in both senses of the word) and Canadians have grown to recognise and adore it!
I'm a graphic designer and this video is awesome content. I too was surprised that you're channel is just starting out. I didn't even realized until I got to the comments. But you earned my sub, and it's a good feeling knowing that in the future when you're past a million subs, I'll be able to comment, "I was here when he was at a thousand."
This video was absolutely fascinating, and I’d love to see more videos along these lines! PS Just as a minor side thing-at 10:50-“Moog” is typically pronounced with the “oo” as in the “o” in “rogue.”
should be noted that the "before" ABC logo you showed was phased out back in 2013 in favor of a logo with a more refined 3d feel with a yellow/blue/red gradient (dependent on the program). that 2013 logo also reverted the letters back to the original ABC circle logo, the 2007 one had modified it a little. the 2022 one has modified it further, of course
Great video! I think the main issue for rebranding in media is that sometime they are a bit too drastic for their own sake. As we use logos as a logical substitute of a name and we see media more than our friends an abrupt change feels sometimes very abrupt and illogic. It’s just like you call your friend and he suddenly respond that you shouldn’t refer to him by that name anymore. It’s a bit awkward and, at times upsetting. -- In the BBC logo, I think there is a clear issue with the spacing: the bold contrast makes you focus on the letters and you feel compelled to read but the spacing of the letters within the box, and the spaces between the boxes actually makes it harder to read, and the additional (double) spacing tricks your mind to think that you finished reading while you didn’t.
One thing that upsets me is the simplification of logos in luxury brands. And I don’t understand because allmost all luxury brands have their origin in iconic and, at least originally, artisanal-Made products, so in general should aspire to maintain their identity rather to pursue a “0,99$ app look”.
Man, I already wish that Warner Bros. 2019 redesign could could come back because the current one is too bulky for my test everyone else agree with me?
Absolutely love that I had this recommended to me. I've been really interested in logo design for a good while, and this definitely feeds that appetite. One bit I'll say about the video is that that 2019 redesign of the Warner Bros logo was a masterclass in brand modernization. It knew how to pay respects to the logo's history while doing away with the baggage it accrued over the years. And then Zaslav went and reversed it... I never hear about that guy in a positive light, even with a little curiosity hobby like this!
Personally i enjoy almost every era of the WB logo, i think the 3d effect does date it, but in a classic way! the 2019 design feels cheaper somehow because it lacks dimension in comparison. Great video!!
You didn't notice that Disney+ undergoes a rebrand, swapping the legacy blue color in favor on teal as part of its merger with more general-focused Hulu.
I hope you do more of these and include more Hollywood brands like 20th Century Studios and Universal in future. I bet just 20th Century Studios can be a whole video on its own seeing how it's evolved from 1935 to now.
Glad I stumbled across this channel. Logo redesigns are an unlikely hobby of mine and ever since Brand New by Under Consideration went behind a paywall there's been a void left to be filled.
I’m still heartbroken about the WB rebrand. I LOVED the 2019 rebrand. It felt modern and fresh, yet still WB. I think having the blue was an issue. I wouldn’t have been surprised if the logo was still around if it had been gold.
The BBC gets my vote for the most subtle logo change. So subtle that 99% of people won't notice the differences. Google Play takes 2nd spot, whoke bronze place goes to RU-vid. First here, but imo more noticeable changes than either the BBC, or the Google Play logo changes.
9:00 I like the simple but bold 1972 Warner logo. Like the RU-vid logo, it has the classic CRT TV screen shape. The W drawn with 3 rounded strokes. Like the bold ABC logo sans shading, shows that minimalism can be anything but a weakness.
Omg I love this vid. As a fellow graphic designer I noticed to. Love to know Im not the only one. And also finally someone talking about the chaotic transformation of the warner bros logo lol
brilliant video m8 if I should give a tip probably play around with your color grading of your camera you look a bit blend a bit more saturation could do! ;)
Good stuff. I understand the color grading is a style but it's a little bit distracting. And audio compression setting is a little off causing the volume of your voice to be inconsistent. Other than that, amazing enjoyable video.
For your ABC section, you used the 2007 logo as the "before" picture. There was actually a logo in-between that one, that was a middle-ground between the one you found and the one used today.
I've followed this subject for decades. I feel the latest BBC logo sits fairly well with earlier ones, but is better when not compared to it's immediate predecessor.
A subtle redesing i think not too many noticed is the Virgin logo. I think this one would be nice to mention in a part two of this video if you make one.
Not really a logo thing, but I am surprised at how Warner Music Group (which is apparently not owned by Warner Bros. Entertainment, and hasn't since 2004) now sports the Saul Bass logo once designed for their old parent company.
I have to disagree with you in relation to the bbc rebrand. The icons for services which are “to join the dots” fails to do so. To start with, without the names of the services underneath the icons (especially news, sounds and sports) would you know what they represent. I don’t look at the news icon and think news. You then have the situation where the icons are not used on screen, to my mind failing its objective to join the dots. The problem with moving across to bbc reith as a font is that the font was designed for its readability. It’s designed to not be flashy. The problem is that using it for a logo makes the logo blend into the background. It no longer stands out. The final with the master brand is that there were a few dodgy remakes of the 1997 logo which the BBC used. Because the new logo is so similar to the 1997 logo it looks like a dodgy markup.
The one good thing David Zaslav has ever done. Pentagram's redesign was good, but lost a lot of what made the logo iconic. The 2023 redesign feels like a good modernization of the classic logo with Pentagram's typeface giving it a more unique identity.
Corporate logos have become TOO MUCH in today's society. They are everywhere all the time. On a side note, designer logos on clothing is a bit too much.
