I need to just say I freaking love the timer thing you have going on in the corner, it really makes your videos so much more watchable than alot of others I think this is my most viewed RU-vid page to be honest, awesome work man!
"The Takeover" is a diamond in the rough, it borrows some flashy moves from Streets of Rage, it also features some very cool stage variations to break the mold, like getting a automatic rifle with unlimited bullets to mow down crazy zombie enemies in one stage, another driving a car while doing stunts and destroying other enemy cars, stage, then there's my favorite a tomcat like jet plane stage where you fire missiles at enemies, gives of a very Sega like feeling. My gripes with this game is the lack of oumph! Or power when it of punching enemies, they feel a bit spongy (sadly this is super important to get right) , and game itself isn't very long. I think a sequel would iron out most of the flaws and could become something really special.
It looks and feels more similar to Raging Justice. I would say very similar not the exact same though... Raging justice developers said the choppy frame animations were a design choice...
Was looking through some of your older videos recently and it's brilliant how much you have progressed in quality and detail with you reviews and summaries. Also constantly improving the detail and delivery in your content. Always improving. Some of your earlier videos have such short descriptions for the games now you pack in so much pertinent information. Keep up the good work Seeeya
Thank you. Yeah, we have tried very hard to improve in every way possible. Delivery, info given, transitions, quality of life tweaks. It's nice to hear that the hard work comes across. Glen
Fight n Rage is an excellent beat em up. Great pixel art, heavy metal music, dark storyline, the ability to chain moves together, and satisfying feedback. If you combo hard enough on an enemy, their skeleton literally explodes. Enough said.
River City Girls and Streets of Rage 4 have me excited about the future of beat'em-ups. Having grown up in the arcades in the late 80's and then through the 90's, it was always one of my favorite genres... which I thought had died off. Glad to see such high quality, and successful, contemporary renditions.
Thanks for pointing out my review guys, appreciate it. Some great games in this list. River City, Bud Spencer (weirdly), The streets of rage and of course the King. Can't beat the Switch on a beat 'em up front!
Man i grew up playing Streets of Rage, was damn glad to finally get to play 4 when it released, and felt like i was back in my childhood days when i heard the sound track and saw the backgrounds of the first level
There are licensing issues that surround that game; the turtles were later sold to Nikelodeon or however you spell it. Best to buy an old SNES and the actual game cart like I did.
Great video, Glen! Some of my faves on the Switch are Mother Russia Bleeds (published by Devolver), 99 Vidas and Night Slashers. I'm also looking forward to picking up Super Punch Patrol (developed by the same guy behind Gunman Clive). Keep doing these types of videos ✌
Love the game index at the bottom of the vid. Sometimes I want to go back and check a particular game again and it makes it so much easier to find the individual titles. Great improvement - keep up the good work with the vids.
A lot of great games here but when that music hit for Castle Crashers, I couldn't help but smile. I played so much Castle Crashers with my brother when it came out.
@@SwitchUpYt Easily the best beat-em-up of all time. Not sure if you're familiar with the details, but it had a branching storyline similar to the 'biomes' you see in many roguelites. But it was coupled with a wildly varied storyline with lots of branches and hidden nooks. Just absolutely a monster of a legacy established by that game. It used three 'lanes' of 2d fighting instead of a 3d walkable area like a traditional brawler. This was done so the gamepad could borrow Street Fighter-style command inputs to give characters a variety of specials. Plus it had a melee brawl mode that worked with the Saturn multi-tap. Plus all of the characters, no matter how horrible or OP was playable in versus. Queueing up 8 people with random characters rivaled Goldeneye for the top spot in my late 90s game parties.
@@SwitchUpYt the lane system of course! One of the elements that made game awesome among many other features, i think the developers of Treasure must of been inspired by Fatal Fury on the Neo Geo which also had this. Code of Princess which of yet to play was developed by Studio Saizensen
The original double dragon is better in every respect... The only shortcoming is its length which had to be short depending on the age it was developed in...
Love the Beatemup genre. I was surprised how many of the titles I actually have. I have always looked at the bud and Spence or whatever its called but chose not to get it as I thought it might only be for people who have seen there films but now I will be getting it
Thanks for the recommendations. Love this genre and didn’t know it was flourishing on the Switch. Would love it if you all could do a similar series on couch coop games to play with non gamers!
Great video! I love the genre and there are quite a lot I haven’t played yet on the Switch. My favorite at the moment has to be Ninja Saviors, that game is so good!
Great list Glen! I recenly started to dive more into beat'em up's, because they're perfect for short trips in public transport and the game that triggered it was "99 vidas". This brazilian game is so much fun! You can unlock more superpowers, more characters and different modes and the looks and the music are top notch and are inspired by the 80s and 90s. It makes me laugh so much, I like it even more than "slaps and beans" and that one is really cool too.
I'm glad that I found a channel who loves beat em up cause that's my favorite genre also. But you should try "Shank", I'm still waiting for another sequel and it's by far in my most top 10 beat em up list of all time.
I love River CIty Girls it’s a Switch classic . I just bought Streets of Rage 4 and can’t wait to give it a go. I recommend Wulverblade which is a high quality game as well.
Wow! Fight N'Rage looks amazing. Never heard of that one. I completely agree that we need Alien VS Predator on this console, easily one of the best 2D beat em ups ever. Great list of games!
I just got Wulver Blade on sale for like $2.50 (AUD) and its great! Fun action, good fighting and enjoyable historical storyline (and good voice acting) I loved this video and been trying to grab all the ones from your list, and just wanted ta add my 2 cents. Thanks for all of your content and keep up the good work.
I never played a whole lot of beat em ups growing up. I did play river city at my grandparents on occasion. I'm really loving scott pilgrim as my first true beat em up. I'm gonna have to pick up a few of these. They look fun!
This is such a well put together video, you know your stuff! I appreciate the effort here. Die for Valhalla looks interesting, that's going on my wishlist 🤓
Nice one Glen! Some great beat em ups on switch and there’s another cool looking one coming in the next few weeks - “9 monkeys of shoalin” - Might be worth checking out!
Night Slashers is a pretty good game... not a top grade beat 'em up from the early 1990s, but close to the mark. It's appropriate for the fast-approaching Halloween season, since you're fighting draculas and zombies and all manner of creepy monsters, who typically melt into puddles of disgusting goo when you kill them.
I used to play a lot of beat 'em ups when I was younger. I can see myself enjoying Castle Crashers, it's going straight to my wishlist for when I have more money!
I put over 100 hours into castle crashers o. The Xbox. Never found another game like it. It's fantastic and unlocking the new characters keeps it replayable
We produce anywhere between 9-12 reviews a month. We posted one on Tuesday this week. One is going out today and one on Friday. Three went out last week. We've always made list videos as well as reviews, right from the start and if anything, we make double the reviews these days as we did back then. What an incredibly odd comment. Glen
@@SwitchUpYt Not that odd really. I really like your take on games, and more often than not I agree with particular points you make about parts of games that are often overlooked. Maybe a year back I did not notice, but I don't remember your content being half reviews half "best of/sale/etc" videos. I'm sorry if this came out harsher that intended. I'm not english, this must be why. What I meant is just that I wish your videos type ratio leant more in favor of reviews, because those are amazingly made and pertinent. If I look at your eighteen last videos, half aren't reviews per se. No offense meant though, just wishful thinking. See you in the next quality review !
Appreciate you replying mate and apologies also if I sounded harsh, I was a bit confused. Our reviews equate to about 40% of our monthly output. They take a huge amount of preparation, writing and making and with only two of us on the channel, 10-12 a month is pretty good going. Lists also just give us a 'change of scenery.' For example, I love beat 'em ups and whilst I might get to review one every so often, making this list meant I got to share my passion for them properly. Rest assured there will be lots of reviews coming if that's the part of the channel you enjoy the most. Take care. Glen
Fair enough, now I feel guilty because indeed reviews have to take time. And the passion sharing is also something I overlooked. Subbed as an apology. Take care, and I love your reviews.
I did have it on my initial list and hear it's very good, but I haven't played it and already had Fight'N Rage as one that I hadn't played. Didn't want to include too many like that. Glen
@@martindion4846 I like it a lot as a beat em up game! The only issue is that the story mode is short. It may take you 2:30 - 3 hours to finish it. But the bosses are fun, every character plays differently, and there is a lot of blood. Also, there are other playing options besides the campaing.
Thanks mate. Yeah, I really wanted to get a copy of the SNES version but it's very expensive these days so was delighted when it was announced on the Capcom Beat 'Em up Bundle. Glen
You miss mother russia bleeds... My top: double dragon top of the top 1)fight n rage 2)river city girls 3)mother russia bleeds Street of rage 4 awesome graphics but...
Appreciate the video, I just purchased a hori fighting mini stick and streets of rage 4 and street fighter 30th anniversary. Hopefully the stick will work on my wii u for mame gaming :)
Imo Fight N' Rage is the best beat em up out there right now. Like there are options. Example: You spawn in the first level and have the option of going left. LEFT. IN A SIDE SCROLLER! The music, the combo depth, the multiple endings, all the stuff you can unlock to make the game more interesting. Guys go plz play Fight N' Rage. What one dude was able to accomplish is well worth you time and money if you're a beat em up fan 👍
@@franciscor390 they really did, I could literally play these games to death just beating people up lol! So satisfying. The characters are great as well axel being my fave I'd say
I was thinking the same thing about that Capcom Beat'em Up collection, AVP and Cadillacs and Dinosaurs are a sorely missed opportunity so hopefully we get that in another collection.
Great list as always. I was unaware of The Takeover. Looks great so I will definitely check it out. Has anyone else played Wulverblade? I think it deserves a mention. Nice production value. Good difficulty level.
Streets of Rage 4, The Takeover, Fight'nRage and The Ninja Saviors are my absolute fovourites on this list. I'm a big Beat'emUp Fan and own every one of these games and there is almost no game session with one or more friends without one of these games. They all have their pros and cons, but the four I mentioned are nearly perfect imo. Fight'nRage is so highly recommended because of the style and what you get, because it's a really big Beat'emUp. River City Girls never got me because of the rpg elements. And you forgot Super Punch Patrol and 99 Vidas. And when you mentioned Mutation Nation, Robo Army and the other excellent NeoGeo Beat'emUps you should show them. ;)
Time to add TMNT shredders revenge. I also quite liked mother russia bleeds. It’s an odd one and I really like that it lets you add computer co-op help
You forgot the Kunio Kun & Double Dragon Collection. All three Double Dragon games, River City Ransom, Renegade (the first ever beat em up), and japanese exclusives we never got in the west. All in one collection.
I mentioned them as separate purchases instead so I could also mention HAMSTER and Johnny Turno releases. Just saved a bit of time. A great collection though for sure. Glen
I really liked streets of rage 3. It also has a good and bad ending as well. Learning to unlock the other characters in the game was also fun. Being a mini boss and fighting that same mini boss again later in the game makes it strange
Nice lis Mark!!! Looking forward to get some of these in a future sale... as they tend to be more en the short side if you just make a normal playthrough or to... and don´t play coop. Next time in a list like this would me nice to mention which ones have coop or onlinplayer coop.
I really needed this top, thanks a lot! Awesome to know that Castle Crashers got a remaster has anyone played River City Girls? Would you reccomend it?
