I would leave that to someone who experiences winter cycling and winter bike maintenance on an ongoing basis. I’m 2 years into winter e-biking in the mountains in BC, and my suggestion would be the look at most of the same bikes suggested here, but unless you are able to wash your bike every time it’s used and store it above freezing so that it dries, stick with hydraulic brakes and limit yourself to models with belt drives and internal hub shifting. Maintaining mechanical cables, chain and derailleur in snow/ice/silt/salt is next to impossible. Also, avoid 20” fat tires because no one makes studded tires for them.

My wife and I both got Nevo 3GT’s a month ago and absolutely love them. The quality is truly excellent and the ride comfort and on/off road ability makes this such a great bike to own. We live in a valley here in the UK near the Lake District and most hills are 10% or greater. So far we’ve only done 10 miles or so in any one ride and only used 10 to 15% battery usage. Incidentally I’m 63 and my wife is 56 and neither of us are super fit but riding these bikes is a real joy and we hope we’ll get many years of happy use from them. Great channel by the way very informative.👍

I've got 1000 klicks on my second ebike. I'm 64 and disabled, with massive arthritis, so it ain't me, it's the bikes. I've gone cheap - DJ Bikes from Canada - and outside of the fact that no movie stars have torn their clothes off when they saw me, this $1k bike is doing everything I ask of it. It muds, goes offroad, pulls 150lbs (70 kilos) without breaking a sweat, stands out in traffic and keeps us from getting hit. I respect that you sell these, but too many people still get sticker discouragement. Thanks for the video.

I really enjoy your videos and your low-key presentations. I recently got my first ebike, a Rad Power RadRunner which is a pretty good utility bike for the money. But eventually I also want a more refined and classy bike along the lines of the Gazelle Ultimate C380, or possibly one of the R&M models. Since I'm getting ready to buy a new truck it will have to wait till next year, and hopefully I will be placing an order with Propel.

Thanks so much for writing this Chris! You know a lot of times people tell me oh you can’t be on RU-vid you’re not enthusiastic enough. Or this presenter is boring. But I really believe that I shouldn’t be somebody different on RU-vid then I’m going to be in person and this is just the way I am in person. It’s really helpful to hear people reinforce that this is OK and perhaps of times even preferred. Cause I watch a good amount of RU-vid myself and the people I tend to watch have a similar type of demeanor. Although I Definitely don’t discriminate if it’s quality content. Also respect your choice about the RadRunner, I think that’s a prudent choice, and as I mentioned in the video this is just my list. I wish I could sell service and cover all the bikes, but that’s just not realistic right now. I’ve learned if you want to be great at some thing you gotta focus. Will certainly be happy to assist you if you choose to get a different E Bike in the future. But I hope that you’ll continue to watch until participate in the community in the meanwhile.

@merendell
@merendell 3 года назад
Another good choice would be the priority current. Mid drive ebike with gates carbon belt. Integrated lights and fenders. No rack but they do sell one as I recall and it has mounting points to add your own after market rack. I was going to get a gazelle medeo T10+ but covid supply chain issues delayed things long enough for me to look elsewhere. Having test ridden the gazelle and my own current I'd say they are comparable rides. Main difference is the current has the belt drive which is a wonder for a daily commuter and costs about a grand less. I really cant stress enough how nice it is to not have to deal with chain maintenance during wet winter months. Chain was needing cleaning and lube weekly to keep the squeek away and it still was starting to squeek a bit before the week was up. Belt drive, dead silent and only needs a garden hose down if the appearance of dirt annoys me. 800 miles and the only time I had to mess with it was re-tensioning it after fixing a flat.

Thanks Chris for clarifying. This is my favorite video of yours to date. The Riese and Muller Chargers Nixed with belt drive are my favorite bikes managing to be conventional and innovative both at the same time and extremely well designed. The only way I could see justifying spending that kind of money would be to replace one of my cars with it. When we go RVing instead of our tow vehicle maybe. I still don't fully understand the advantage of Rolloff hub, is it worth the price and what does it add. I thought my CCX was expensive and it has its quirks and understanding that it wouldn't make your list, has been a good bike.
@Propelbikes
@Propelbikes 3 года назад
Much appreciated! The charger3 is pretty awesome! I totally get the idea of these only making sense unless you replace your car. The Rohloff is really nice, but for most people I recommend the Enviolo. I kind of look as the Rohloff as an alternative if someone want a bit more efficiency and still have a belt. The CCX seems like a cool bike although I don’t have too much personal experience with it. I hope the way I put that in the video didn’t come across as snobbish or anything. I really do think most eBikes these days are pretty good, light years ahead of what was available when we started.

Great list of commuter bikes. Have to wonder is there going to be a bike that comes along to cross the chasm - a Model T of eBikes that becomes ubiquitous (economical, user friendly, reliable). Spot on about the utilitarian nature of a commuter bike - its only once you live with one of these for a while do you realise the functionality you require (e.g. comfort, reliable brakes, fenders, carry capacity if reqd). I'd personally go for the R&M Roadster - for its relative lightness to the others, and the R&M reliability - I've a long commute with hills so a lighter bike, that won't break down is a must.

I'm Dutch and I think it's funny to see an American video about e-bikes. There are beautiful bicycles among them. Trek is an American bicycle manufacturer, right? How do people view that? Look, here in the Netherlands, the choice of e-bikes drives you crazy. There are so many (pretty good) brands. But I'm glad to see that cycling in the US is becoming more and more popular. Also that more and more initiatives are being taken to build good bicycle paths. Okay, it will take a while before it is at Dutch level, but we also started with nothing. And there is much to learn from the Dutch cycling infrastructure. A very interesting RU-vid channel is Not Just Bikes. Can I recommend to everyone.

Great video with solid and useful information - well done. Since bikes can be quite expensive, maybe you should do a video about bike leasing some time. My current employer recently teamed up with a „micro mobility“ service provider and now offers bike leasing to employees who have been working for the company for two years or more. Monthly leasing rates are deducted from the payment before taxes, which makes it quite affordable. After three years, you can either buy the bike at a much lower price or switch to a new one, similar to car leasing programs. I‘m not sure what’s available in the US in that regard since I‘m in Germany, but there should be similar services around I guess.
@Propelbikes
@Propelbikes 3 года назад
Thanks a bunch Markus! You’re right I should cover this leasing topic. I’ve been meaning to. It’s really unfortunate as there are very few programs if any in the US currently. I know how big of a deal this is in Europe. In speaking with eBike owners in Europe I realized that many of them have leased their bikes and got some help from their employer. I’ve been pushing this topic with any companies that seem to have some influence in the US, so I’m optimistic something will happen I could be a perfect time to put a video out to speak a bit more about it. Thanks for sharing your experience! We all have a lot we can learn from each other.

I'm a super commuter (31 miles each way, 62 mile round trip) and am leaning toward the Trek Allant+ 8S with the range extender. It was between that and the Gazelle Ultimate T10+ but the Trek is lighter and carries the support of Trek with a local store. Is there a reason you included the Gazelle but not Trek? Great video as always.
@Propelbikes
@Propelbikes 3 года назад
The Trek Allant+ is a nice way to go and with the range extender I think you’ll be happy with it. I don’t have to much experience with it as I don’t sell it, but on paper it looks great! My only caveat would be that it doesn’t have suspension, although the geometry seems to be able to handle it if you’d like (those long commutes can be tough on your body, but the wide tires help a lot). I’d recommend adding a suspension seatpost. Outside of the tires and suspension they have similar component specs. I guess depending on the conditions of your route you might find an advantage of narrower and lighter wheels on the Gazelle. The Gazelle might tend be a bit more upright in it’s seating position and the adjustable stem can get you more upright if you’d like. But if you’re looking to be most efficient you’ll probably want to be more forward. Lastly about weight, keep in mind Gazelle includes a frame lock which weighs about 3 lbs and the suspension probably adds another 3. I hope this was helpful.

I also expect you can't possibly test all the current bikes out there not to mention the new ones constantly coming out. Being in Central Maine my greatest difficulty is kind myself limited in my ability to test out various models to see if I'm comfortable with any of them. If I could find a local dealership it might be a good distance drive and Maines a fairly big state. Then they'll likely have a limited selection. There are soooooo many options for EBikes. I understand your selection process. However if you get a chance I’d like to know your opinion of the Qualisports Nemo at $999.00. According to its specs is weighs 30lbs which is my primary concern with Ebikes as I live in a old converted school building and need to navigate long flights of stairs what with me being 60 years of age and would just hate dying from a heart attack climbing a flight of stairs in order to take a bike ride:) thus making weight a key factor. It’s other features though far less important fit my criteria as I’m not a speed freak and the longest I’d need to travel round trip is 16 miles. Then there’s price. As I understand it Qualisports has been around for a few years so it doesn’t strike me as a fly by night company either.

Hey Chris, how would Xtracycle’s RFA Sport, or Bulls Lacuba place next to these bikes? Looking at Benno and Gazelle in my area, but the RFA Sport appeals, and Bulls keeps coming up.
@Propelbikes

Those are cool bikes, but I would lean towards getting the newest generation Bosch motor if possible. We have sold the Lacuba, but we’re divesting from that motor system due to reliability and support issues.

I would add 3 bikes there: 1. Brompton electric - nothing comes close in terms of folded size. 2. I:SY - german made compact bike with a handlebar that rotates for storage. 3. Qube compact - similar features to I:SY and RM Tinker.
@Propelbikes
@Propelbikes 3 года назад
That Brompton really is awesome for the reason that you mentioned. But unfortunately it seems that the tech might not be on the same level something like a Bosch motor system. Now if only Bosch could have a super lightweight system that would be pretty awesome! That I:SY bikes are really nice as well. I’ve checked them out at Eurobike Over the last few years and They have a nice niche going for them. Also think that cube compact is not a bad choice at all. We used to offer a bike from Kalkhoff called the Sahel and it’s very similar. I’m a big fan of those compact bikes especially for urban environments.

@@Propelbikes I've made a mistake calling Cube incorrectly. Another bike that you also have shown multiple times is Urban Arrow, great cargo bike! As for Brompton they sell their Electric version for some time now and people are generally happy with them. It has also got surprisingly good load carrying capabilities. Great example of ways to cary stuff is shown on Victor's review from Everyday Cycling channel. Trailers are good subject that I'd like to see more videos of.

I would check out a Riese & Muller Bike with the heavy duty package which is exclusively available on their hardbikes. You could also consider a cargo bike ike the Benno Boost or Tern HSD or GSD as these are definitely been built to handle more weight. I did a video about electric bikes for heavier riders you might want to check it out. I might have to do an updated one with some of the newer models but I think most of it still carries over. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Kf1-9UJmURA.html

@@Propelbikes its a really heavy bike not carbon, but it goes 32 mph, 26 inch wheel. 50-60 mile range. cost 1700. I guess the better question is are there any bikes at that price range or within $600 of it made of carbon that can do that distance and support a guy like me who weighs over 300LB. 15:48 While he is explaining here he blinks rapidly when making some specific points and assertions. My mom has a very similar mannerism. She will blink like that when she feels very strongly about a point she is making and feels that she speaks from a place of experience and insight on a subject, but also feels somewhat uncomfortable about the assertion of her expertise. I think because to elevate her personal opinion over others' is something she rarely does, only when necessary, and so she isn't used to it and is maybe a little defensive while doing so. Do you guys know what I'm talking about?
@Propelbikes
@Propelbikes 3 года назад
That’s a very astute observation. That does seem in line with my feelings on the topic. It’s very challenging though since I don’t want to be divisive, but I do feel this is the best direction. I will have another video on this topic soon which might help explain it better. But I might also do a video in the near future on some of my weird quirks as there are many. I appreciated you taking the time to watch and make this comment though.

It feels pretty wild to think back on that time now. A lot has changed about eBikes since then.

@@Propelbikes I did enjoy the videos. I just got an ebike recently and have been watching lots of ebike videos trying to gain knowledge on the subject and yours have stood out. I remember the guy on ElectricBikeReview interviewing you as well and you seemed very chill. Now I'm uncomfortable because I feel like talking about you blinking could seem like a critique of your behavior, where as what I meant was to make an observation on the nonverbal nature of communication (I believe this is one of the less obvious reasons RU-vid is so good at effectively disseminating information.). All human impulses and compulsions can start to seem objectionable when you obsessively deconstruct them. If anything this particular behavior is an asset as it tends to support (to me anyway) the veracity of your statements. I just wanted to mention that. Thanks again.

This is a great video, no criticism here. But a message to manufacturers: please stop re-inventing the wheel on fenders and racks on commuter bikes, and the mounting points for them. It's not like ebike companies have found a better solution to rear pannier racks compared to what already exists. You can see on one company in this video, each bike they make has a different rear carrying system with different mounting points. None of it replaceable or interchangeable. It's great for the company to keep 100% of the money spent on accessories and replacement parts, if they have any in stock, but it doesn't help the customer any.
