I'm always surprised when The division Bell isn't loved. To each their own of course. It's an amazing album, but it's also so different from Animals, Wish You were here, DSOTM, or The Wall. I always felt The Wall would be a better album without comfortably numb on it. It's a break, a point to chill in an album of chaos, just my opinion.. David and Roger's styles can clash (and clearly their personalities too), but when they worked together, we get magic.
@MelindaMurphy
@MelindaMurphy 9 месяцев назад
I think the more I hear it, the more I will like it. My husband loves it. ♥️ I definitely think David and Roger are better artistically when they work together. The Wall is great but could have been edited just a little bit to make it even better. Thank you and take care.

The Division Bell (Pulse) tour was incredible but I admit the album was mediocre, not bad at all but it was a little uninspired. David and Roger have styles that balance well together. Too much Dave and the mellowness can get boring, too much Roger and the government contempt with abrasive vocals puts me in a rotten mood. But together...the beautiful melodies interspersed with flashes of passion and confidence are what made Floyd one of the most important and influential bands of the last 50 years. The Division Bell was OK but if the rest of their catalog sounded like that we wouldn't even be talking about them today.

Hi Melinda! Great topic. As for Originals, shrink wrap, hype stickers, etc., I’m with You. All of these are case by case situations. In some cases, the original first pressings were not the best sounding versions. Sometimes second pressings were released quickly, that corrected issues with the first. The Beatles are a good example of that, which I learned from Andrew at Parlogram. Although that Abbey Rd, isn’t one of those cases. 1st press of that album is Definitely the best sounding. I too love having the hype stickers on the classic records. So often they remind me of seeing them in the store when they first came out. Which is part of the nostalgia factor. But I do not keep the old shrink. Silly but I don’t like the wrinkled up end of the shrink at the opening 😂. So I always give them new vinyl storage solutions sleeves. As for the hype sticker…. what I do (after I remove the shrink) is take an exacto knife and carefully cut the hype sticker off the shrink. Then I slide the hype sticker under the new outer sleeve. Ooh you gave me a new record idea! I want that McCartney Chaos album :). I just got the Division Bell album as well. I have the same opinion as you do regarding the album, but I am enjoying it more on vinyl than I did on cd when it first came out. Have a great day!

Thanks for the great tip for saving the hype sticker. I may have to try that sometime. The Division Bell is good but not my favorite Pink Floyd album so I'm glad I found it on sale. Chaos is a great album from McCartney. You may be able to find that one on sale as well. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗

"Record" is simply short for "recording", so it could refer to any format. I often use the term "LP", which I mean to refer to a long playing 33 ⅓ rpm recording on vinyl. A record could also be a 78 rpm on shellac, or a 45 rpm on polystyrene. I once had an argument with a guy over the term "album'. He insisted it only referred to an LP on vinyl, and couldn't grasp the fact that an album is simply a collection that could be on any medium, even a photo album. Just ignore the naysayers. Vintage is cool, and I had considered it this past year when I was building a new rig. The old receivers with all of the knobs, buttons, levers, VU meters, and especially the huge radio scale that runs across the face in gorgeous colors are to die for. In this day and age I doubt if many people listen to AM/FM for music like we use to. But most people don't have the knowledge in electronics to service and repair the things, or don't have an experienced business nearby. In many cases the versatility isn't comparable to new equipment, having crappy speaker terminals like the screw down or push type, not to mention a total lack of modern connectors. With new you have a warranty plus the knowledge that parts should be available for some time in the future. When it comes to music I watch RU-vid videos on music, and those that peak my interest I sample on Apple Music. I have bought music that is new to me this way, but not necessarily music that has just been released. I enjoy all types but avoid rap/hip hop like the plague. I don't feel like I owe anybody concerning new music and neither should you. I buy albums from Amazon all the time, and sometimes from Walmart or Target. I mostly buy from Acoustic Sounds or Music Direct, but If I can't find it there or if it's the same but cheaper at Amazon then heck yeah. Some people are a little too uppity for their own good. You be you.
@MelindaMurphy
@MelindaMurphy 9 месяцев назад
I appreciate your take on the topics. It's funny but I actually forgot that the term LP came from Long Playing. Thanks for reminding me of that. 🤗 I buy from so many places and I try to help smaller businesses but if Amazon has a record priced unbelievably low, I do pick it up. I was never going to pay $40 to $50 for The Division Bell. Thank you and take care.

Hi Melinda, really enjoyable video as usual 😊. Just a thought about the “record vs vinyl” debate. Like you, I grew up listening to records long before CDs existed. Back then, we used the terms “record”, “LP” or “LP record”. I don’t think you mentioned LPs so maybe it wasn’t commonly used in the US, but here in Australia it was quite common. So to me, in terms of distinguishing media formats, I would know exactly that an LP is a vinyl record. I would consider LP to be a better term to vinyl because the latter is in fact a reference to the material the disc is made from and not so much the format itself. After all, no one refers to CDs as polycarbonate! So logically, I believe that what we call vinyl, should really be called LP (or single or EP). But I’m probably a lone voice 😂😂
@MelindaMurphy
@MelindaMurphy 9 месяцев назад
Yes, LP was a term used here in the US. It wasn't as common as record back in the day but it would be a good alternative now for the people that dislike the term "vinyl." I think your spot on about why they are referred to as vinyl nowadays. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗

I have very similar vinyl collecting practices as you do. Also, I don’t understand the big issue with calling vinyl records “vinyl”. To me “record” is just another term for album, and does not differentiate the format at all. I don’t think I’ve ever called a CD or a tape a record, so why would I do that with vinyl?

The Division Bell was originally on aqua blue vinyl and was edited down to one LP and songs were shortened and now they go for $200-500. My favorite Record Albums that I own in Vinyl is: Charlie Daniel’s Band -Nightrider Waylon Jennings -ol Waylon & it’s only rock & roll. Hank 3 straight to hell Marshall Tucker Band -Carolina Dreams CA$H live at San Quintin Marylin Manson -Antichrist Superstar Arlo Guthrie - Alice’s Restaurant Every Bad Co album Every Blue Oyster Cult ʢ album Pink Floyd - Obscured By Clouds & echos & Meddle *which as for me I see as a double album. The are both in the same style & tone with one another and carry a binaural frequency that sets them aside from the rest of their Legendary masterpieces ; while complimenting each other’s octave with the album artworks seemingly a slight distortion in the reflection That combines together in a whole of yin & the yang Think also of bullet with butterfly wings when your trying to picture what it means to me when I put forth how my view of it is that these two specific albums, to me ; are just like bullet with butterfly wings Or like The Love Below/Speaker Box Or Eagles Live Or Notorious - Life after death Or Hank 3 straight to Hell

@@MelindaMurphy Marilyn Manson is one of the Most intelligent musicians of all time. His lyrics have meaning and messages that expose the world that we live in. I would start out with the album mechanical animals. It’s more on the pop - funk vibe with some beautiful ingenious lyrics that make you wonder where he thinks up such complex things that are beyond imagination and some of the best sounds that you’ll her on an album. “The first flower after The Flood” Ponder on that one for a minute or two ! Brian Warner , aka Marilyn Manson is by far one of the most creative , talented & brilliant ; not to mention Bold and Brave composers or singer songwriters of all time. Shock & Awe is what he said is how his tactic to gaining his “Fifteen minutes of shame” , which for him is not just fifteen minutes or a “Minute of Decay” but rather infinitely eternal standing brides that of Led Zeppelin , Pink Floyd and Jim Morrison’s Doors. Side thought * if you haven’t ever heard Jim Morrison American Prayer , I suggest on putting that on the important list of albums to indulge in when the time is available to sit down and relax and dedicate to the full experience , uninterrupted without any distractions. “Do we get it? NO ! Do we want it ? YEAH !” Sometimes it helps to make the dive into Manson with a buffer to help transition with. Björk - Post would be a good album to soak in and enjoy before poppin in some Marilyn. Then maybe to take the edge off after and transition back I’d say Thin Lizzie Jailbreak would be the perfect buffer to parachute back down to solid ground with. Rock On 🤘🏻😝🤘🏻

In the 1980s I lived in a student home full of music lovers. Fun times. The CD era started and we simply used the term "Album" for a release independent of the media it was available on (LP or record, CD, or cassette at the time). An album on CD was almost twice the price of the same album on LP or cassette, but the sound from CDs without the ticking, clicking and all that of LPs was amazing.

Hi Melinda, I collect CDs (and SACDs), but I call them "albums". I also agree with you on "space issues" concerning the media storage. My listening room is quite small at 12x15 feet or so, and I have to squeeze in a lot. My husband, who loves to do wood-working, built a new CD storage cabinet for me based in part on your example of how you store your vinyl. The organization, for my CDs, is now so much better than it was before. That is a real blessing. About the stereo gear: For most of my adult life I have been chasing gear upgrades. I too hear all the time that "vintage is so much better". That is simply, at least in my experience, utterly false. In fact, current equipment is infinitely better than the vast majority of "vintage". I recently became the proud owner of a pair of Adcom GFA-565 mono-blocs. "But Tasha", you might say, "these are 30 years old." That is correct, except that I had them completely overhauled by a gentleman who specializes in the rebuilding of Adcom amplifiers. He put in up-to-date electronic components and did a few other things. These new components are of significantly higher build quality than what was used OEM. The difference in sound, is phenomenal. Recently, I replaced my Adcom GFP-815 pre-amp (about 7 years old), with a Parasound P6 Halo. Again, a giant leap in sonic performance. As I love the mid-century modern style, I had to get a pair of speakers to match the decor. I tried all kinds of actual "vintage" speakers, most sounded rather dull and lifeless. The best of the true "vintage" I had were Polk Monitor 7s, with upgraded, high-end cross-overs and new tweeters. They sounded quite nice. Then I heard the Wharfedale Linton Heritage, and I just had to have a pair. Here was a speaker that looks "vintage", but is internally ultra-modern in terms of materials and components. There are some analogs from KLH and JBL that are similar, but don't compare. Speakers like the Klipsch Heresy IV, for example, not only are much more expensive but seem to use 40+ year old materials for the drivers and the electronics in their cross-overs is stuck in the early 1980s. I am sure that there are other manufacturers that provide similar, but this has been my experience. I have a vintage CD player, a Pioneer Elite PD-59. What an amazing CD player! The transport is probably one of the best ever created. The onboard DAC, is however, hideous now. It runs through an external DAC. Such a difference. Yet, I have an "up-to-date" Marantz SACD with resolution that often the PD-59 cannot match. Although, the Pioneer reads CDs instantly, while for the Marantz it takes a good bit of time. As far as "new music". As a "mid-80s" girl, surprisingly I love the "classic rock" music from the late 1960s to the mid 1980s. I don't really like, with some exceptions, music after 1986 or so. In fact, I am an absolute fan of the "Second British Invasion". ☺ What I wouldn't give to time-warp myself to say 1984, put on a miniskirt, fishnet hose, stiletto heel pumps, a jacket with the huge shoulders, and go from one concert to another by my favorite bands when they were in their prime, giant hair and garish make-up and all. 🤭😁💗💗💗

I grew up in the 80's and 1984 was my favorite year for music and for life in general as a teenager. It was just as magical as you may think it was. The music changed in the mid 80's and by 1986, the radio was unlistenable. You are so right about that. Thank you so much. I really enjoyed reading this comment. Congrats on your gear, collection and husband. We are blessed. Take care.

@@MelindaMurphy He also built my audio rack too. Although, he will have to work on fixing it. Some of the wood he used has unfortunately warped a bit. 😔 My favorite year in music, I think, is 1982. More specifically my favorite period, it is from 1982 through 1984. The music of that period, and 1984 was a banner year... so many good things. Have you heard Van Stephenson: Modern Day Delilah? I think that, and Van Helen's "1984"(especially "Panama", "I'll Wait", and "Hot for Teacher" on that album) capture the essence of that time period perfectly; as does Bananarama's "Cruel Summer". ☺☺ I wish I could hear your system as well... perhaps with a glass or wine in hand. I have to say, I do love the "analog" sound. I have this passion of cassette-tapes, and own several 3-head / 3-motor decks. When you record a CD onto tape, especially with my Aiwa or Tascam, it gives it that warm analog sound, sort of like a record. Are you on "Audiokarma"? If you are, please do say hello. Melinda, props to you girl and Happy New Year! You know, all of us in the vinyl community collect records for our own reasons. Personally, I still have every record I've ever bought since 1976. I am guilty of selling some of my old records at used record stores to get money to buy the CD versions (I was young and dumb). Luckily, I have been able to replace nearly all of them. I have had several duplicates (and triplicates) that I have accumulated, and I usually give those away to friends and young collectors that need a break from today's prices. I am a fan of hype stickers! I have always removed the shrink wrap, but I always cut out the stickers and kept them inside the album jacket. Record collecting - buy or keep those you want, one to ‘x’ number of copies. I agree - space is a major conservation. Shrink wrap - agree with your approach. Record - correct. Vinyl - correct. Watchhouse - try them you may enjoy them, they are very good and local to you. Vintage v. New - have multiple systems (lol). Though do find a good tech. So glad you brought up Ryan Seacrest. I didn’t watch all the entertainment, because I just didn’t enjoy it!! The only group I did watch was Green Day, and turned to the Twilight Zone. Hype stickers are a part of the package to me. I keep the shrink on if it’s in good shape. When buying new gatefold records, I remove the shrink and try to remove the hype. If it comes off easily I’ll stick it on the blank lined inner or on the inside of the jacket. Many times the hype contains valuable info like how many pressings etc. I don’t however save the hype and stick it inside loosely. They become a nuisance.

If you're old enough to remember (like me) records were made of shellac, not vinyl, and played at 78rpm. When vinyl came in we called the 7 inch ones "singles" and the 12 inch ones "LPs", playing at 45 and 33rpm respectively. 12 inch singles came along later. I think now most people use the term "vinyl" just to distinguish from CDs.

I *always* carefully remove my hype stickers from the shrink and then affix them to an outer sleeve. It’s the provenance of the record! Or at the very least, part of the graphic design… I mean, someone had to deliberately sit there and design and type out what’s on the thing, so idk, I just think it’s nice to keep them. I have whole methods for removing various types of stickers, haha, because some come right off while others are practically super glued to the shrink - some stickers take a bit of hair dryer heat, for example, to come off. If it’s one of those old records with a 40 year old hype sticker that comes off instantly because all the adhesive dried out so it no longer sticks to an outer sleeve, then I’ll sit there with one of those adhesive rollers to put some glue on the back of the sticker and then slap it on the outer sleeve. This is the nerdiest part of the way I collect vinyl records, and I love it 😅 Besides, a lot of them have very important info like the ones on The Beatles remixes… in basically all cases, the hype is the only spot where it says this is the remixed version.

In my experience, all Phil Colins albums will sound bad, it's a mixture of his voice and instruments stored on record for people to not enjoy forever. I've just started putting the hype stickers right on the covers where they belong - mainly because of pretentious A-holes who think I'm going to sell these things talk about resale value, I'm not going to sell them, and I don't give a flying Far-truck what they think - Some of them look good, also nearly all my box sets have original shrink wrap on them and are only open enough for the contents to be removed, Keeps them nice and clean and I have so many of them most are stored in the packaging they came in stacked in various places. I Can't watch any of those music award shows, even watching bands full of young kids pretending to rock is just so depressing - but on the other side Iggy Needs to just stop, dragging his twisted body up on stage is sad, you outlived Both David and Lou just call that a win and stop, I have seven DVDs of old concerts, (which turns out to be six as 2 are from the same concert) ranging from 1981 t0 2010 so I'm good.

Well this was an interesting video, catchy title. I am pleased to see a VC member who respects the benefits and necessity of better and above average performing audio equipment. I am constantly unimpressed with so many record enthusiasts who have these very poor sub-par (crap) stereos in the background. I sold audio equipment for 12 years in my 30’s and learned mountains of info and heard for myself the difference in details and depth in music with more expensive equipment. Now I have mentioned this MUST in improving your set up and to use some of that vinyl $$ towards those improvements. All replied in many negative comments, to me this is a must and really stupid to ignore. Every VC person I most appreciate have upper end equipment, this means they hear what is supposed to be heard. Your take on vintage equipment is correct, never buy these pieces unless you know how to repair. Also new modern well built equipment is far more precise and detailed. Also I thought of myself as you mentioned comments about OG versus New fancy reissues. Sometimes I may get jealous of those who can spend mucho $$$$ on these expensive packaged repressing. Thats it……bye for now.

I agree that having the best stereo equipment one can afford is a good thing. ♥️ I know what a difference it has made for me. When it comes to what pressing to buy, it all comes down to would quality for me. Originals are very cool but if a reissue is affordable and sounds better than I will pick up the reissue. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗

It's quite noble of you to respond to these questions but in the end, it's all your choice and your world. I, for one, absolutely love hype stickers and shrink wrap. I'm always doing my best to find vintage albums in the shrink as they are ALWAYS in the best condition. So many love to scream "Shrink wrap warps the records!" In all my now 48 years of collecting VINYL (see what I did there?), this has happened exactly ZERO times. To this day, I'm still annoyed that I allowed some stranger my brother knew to talk me into taking off the shrink wrap of my mid'70s "Beatles VI". This was around 1978 and within a year, the jacket was trashed. Why? Because I didn't have or know about protective covers. Never again became my motto. Also, if I find an album I already have and it's sealed, IT STAYS SEALED. I refuse to ever allow clueless types to attempt to guilt me into opening anything I don't want to open. I'm also done dealing with the disappointment of finding out a record is worth 25% to 50% more if it's still sealed. Just because some schlep goes on a power trip to tell me otherwise is laughable. I now have many, many sealed items and they are staying sealed.......hype stickers and all. As for listening to newer music? I flat out refuse. There's no way I'm going to force myself to listen to songs that go nowhere and are slammed throughout with autotune......and that hellish crutch effect is now everywhere. It's even ruined what should've been the perfect new and last Beatles song (Paul and Ringo's HORRIBLY autotuned backing vocals on the choruses.....grrrrrrrrrrr!). What's great is there are so many artists and songs from yesteryear I've yet to hear. With that in mind, as I buy that stuff, all the music will be brand new to me. I've been doing this for decades but really went into high gear in the 1990s. As a musician, I recall people insisting "Oh! You gotta hear this NEW song! It's awesome! You should learn it!" At the time, I thought, OK. I'll give it a chance. Even if I thought the song was aardvark snot, which most of them were, I'd learn it, and- a few weeks or months later- NO ONE WAS REQUESTING IT ANYMORE. Gee.....I can't understand why? 🙄🙄🙄🙄 Yet, I was hearing....and still am hearing....people scream out "Play the Beatles!" or "Play 'American Pie'!" I'm a dinosaur and proud of it. Anyway, nice video (as usual) and remember to follow your own heart. Use the new equipment......keep the shrink and hype stickers on.......do what's best for YOU. It does wonders for the soul!

I agree that the shrink acted as a protector in a time when most people didn't use outer sleeves. They are definitely great because of that and I also love vintage hype stickers. ♥️🤗 I am definitely enjoying my new equipment. I'm so grateful. Thank you and take care.

I always keep hypestickers. I often take them and stick them on outher sleeve that I use. I actually try to keep what ever comes with vinyl or CD, even if it is just some advertisement. I have been using used gear, but now I bought new CD player and I am really happy for it. It doensn't jump and it plays everything. But I kept also my "vintage" player.: mr. Melinda I had the same experience with vintage equipment so I bought a new Onkyo amp. glad I did. As far as new music goes, since I enjoy melodic/prog rock it is hard to find new bands to recommend, bands like Gorillaz incorporate rap, into their music so even though I enjoy them, I wouldn't recommend them to most classic rock fans, but bands like Gunship and Cat's in Space I would recommend to anyone. Also as you mentioned a lot of our favorite bands will be calling it quits soon, so I have adapted by accepting "good" cover bands, we are going to see ABBA Mania in a week, can't wait! Thanks for listening.

I do like the Cats In Space record you sent to me. It's very good. ♥️ I do need to get into a few more new artists so that I can continue to go to live shows and enjoy them. For me, it's new equipment from now on. I'm not a repairman. Lol. Thank you and take care.

IMHO most those questions are just silly to even consider, except for the one about "vintage equipment". First off, I don't know where or what you bought that was vintage, but you talking about vintage equipment needing repairs is normal for any piece of equipment that's over 50 years or old or more. I say this with respect, although you may have new stuff & feel comfortable with it lasting without repairs for some time, I'd bet in 50 years it will be in a junk pile somewhere unlike all these wonderful vintage pieces that are still serviceable. The other factor is the cost. Although you may have to spend some extra money having certain thing's repaired (w=if they haven't been before hand), you are still gonna come out ahead in the end. Especially with as much as you have invested already in your system, but I totally get it. New stuff is more stylish to I would guess suits you better in such a classy home. I say "Enjoy the music however you like!" Just my 2 cents.

You make great points. If I knew more about the mechanics of stereo equipment, I might be more inclined to buy vintage gear. For me, the new equipment sounds great and is more reliable. There is no wrong answer to this in my opinion. I do appreciate that some people are keeping vintage gear going. ♥️🤗 Thank you and take care.

Ha…I got a complaint right off the bat: Face Value is a stone cold classic!!!!! Lol - written with love. Seriously amazing album and every track is so good. But the punks slammed me over Phil, so there’s that. All shrink goes immediately. Record vs vinyl = pedantic and they need to get over themselves. I listen to old stuff too. You got some nice records for Xmas.

Nothing wrong with calling it your vinyl collection. What is out and out WRONG is calling records vinyls. You can say vinyl records but not vinyls! In fact spelling correction underlines "vinyls" in red as I am typing this. Vinyl is both the singular and the collective form. Much like deer, or math. NO it is NOT maths. It is either mathematics or math.

@@MelindaMurphy I am a huge fan of GG. Meanwhile, I am not a vinyl collector, at all 😄, just wanted to look at the vinyl collecting videos. But I sure know that their recordings are all very much audiophile-friendly, so to say. And their albums all had memorable covers. So, they are perfect for vinyl size and sound quality. Try to start with The Power And The Glory or Free Hand or their eponymous debut album Gentle Giant or any other studio album released before 1977 (the 1977's The Missing Piece marked the transition to pop-rock, on their 1978's release Giant For A Day they ultimately changed their style to rather generic though overall nice sounding pop-rock or so, in 1980 their last album Civilian was more solid than the predecessor but also even more pop than the latter one, with New Wave influences, etc). Their music was intricate eclectic progressive rock of the 1970s, but their songs were more pop-structured than one'd expect in case of eclectic progressive rock. Unlike their contemporaries and colleagues by genre such as King Crimson or Yes, GG created songs rather than shapeless compositions lasting for twenty minutes or so. Each of their songs had a distinct sounding so you can easily guess which is which one. Most of their songs last for less than 7 minutes. They only had one 9 minute long song. I agree it's not a music for everyone's taste. But, undoubtedly, possessing or listening to their recordings is the token of... well, cult status, to an extent. I prefer CDs, honestly - though indeed, I can agree, their art was made for vinyls.
@DeadnWoon

What are the traits of Gentle Giant that created them (and, subsequently their listeners) the aura of cultness, of style, of image, of might? I may highlight such ones: * The band existed from 1970 to 1980, thus effectively becoming the band of the 1970s-1980 symbolically - as opposed to The Beatles, the band of the 1960s-1970. * The band would never return, reunite in its core form - unlike pretty every other legendary rock band of the 1960s-1970s! Except for The Beatles, again!.. Their formal frontman, singer Derek Shulman, said in an interview smth like, "Who needs old farts on stage?"... * The band's de facto main composer Kerry Minnear was their keyboard player, occasional cellist, percussionist and singer. PhD in composition from London Music Academy, virtuoso keyboardist, genius of composition, Christian Protestant believer, a very humble and kind person. Master of syncopations and triplets. The guy who basically composed a piece, then went to the other guys in the band to tell them how they must perform it all. Humble and kind, nonetheless. * Likely the only legendary progressive rock band that has never recorded a song longer than 9 minutes. No multi-part suites as such, no side-length compositions. Lots of 4-minute songs full of intricacy and prog eclecticism. * Elton John could have become the member of the band at the time of their creation, but somehow didn't fit... (he was a temporary keyboardist in the previous band of the core of GG). * Frank Zappa, American rock experimentator, was once asked on what music he listened to, apart from his own. He answered, "I like Queen. I like Gentle Giant". * GG also ended their album (the debut one) with the rendition of British National Anthem - 5 years earlier than Queen...
