Everybody knows the answer to that question. Let's assume the maid doesn't have an account and all her money is in cash. She can go to the bank, open an account and deposit her money in the account or if she doesn't feel like opening an account and doesn't have a large amount of money then exchange the money at a bank or a post office. Yes, she will face long lines but hopefully, this will be taken care off with some new measures. People have been asking the govt to curb corruption, the govt has done it's part now the test is for the people whether they are up to the task or not.

I know nobody needs a bank account for exchanging 4000-4500 for now but are you sure that is enough for daily wagers to last that long who has to buy their food daily, pay up to their landlords, send money to their homes etc? And mind it, as per RBI this exchange limit if for 50 days. So for next 50 days they aren't allowed to exchange more money. And you expect a daily wager to get in line with his/her money and wait 2-3 days(that's the case of Delhi not any rural area, check news reports on that) losing his wage and food to not complain? For all the people who are commenting that Cong proposed something similar and BJP opposed it at that time, first of all the congress proposed to replace old currency notes with new ones! Wanted to get tax on black money and one month later it's reported that more than 56 lakhs people newly added for paying income tax from their income . So i think the govt. No, this is wrong ... Any bank can easily distinguish between old 1000 rupee and new 1000 rupee (if introduced) because it would have different dimension and colour. Do you think bank cashiers are blind.... The reason of introducing 2000 rupee is made clear by government i.e. inflation and easy handling. People using 1000 note will have to use 2000 note in coming 5-10 years because prices of goods would double due to inflation. And government is not going to introduce new notes in coming 10-20 years.

ive been reading mr shah's post that is being shared but i still dont understand something. okay if you are a banker maybe you can help. so my question is this, all that peak theory means is that your first deposit is a deposit and subsequent deposits can be shown as exchange. my question is this, you keep track of denomination on deposit slips, but accountants dont use deposit slips, they simply use debit/credit statements, right? so how does the 2000 rs note change anything/help with accounting if size/color/shape of new notes versus old isnt the problem?

The Logic at 8:40 is so fallacious, the person asked why print Rs. 2000 and he gives this illogical answer. You could have introduced a new 1000 note like the the new 500 note which would do the same. The real reason for printing the Rs. 2000 is that RBI has 4 mints in the country and they cannot print all the notes so they double the denomination to reduce the time to print them. The capacity of printing is 300 crore pieces per month and they have to replace 23000 crore pieces. Rs. 2000 denomination does that very well. Govt is certainly not stupid and is making the common man stupid!

Did you even understand what he was trying to say? The idea of the notes being different from the old one is the key element here. Let me explain more clearly. -He deposits 10k in old notes (black money) - pays taxes and fines -He withdraws 10k in new notes (white money) -He then again tries to deposit 10k in old notes. Which should not be possible because the 10k he should legally have must be in new notes. (Which he withdrew earlier). This means he had 10k more worth of black money. -So, he will have to pay the fine and taxes again on the new 10k he wants to deposit. -So, when till the time he deposits 1 lac, he has payed all the taxes and fines. 2nd, it was dramatised scenario. You dont raise questions on fiction. 3rd, i dont know how many people have accounts or not so i wont comment on that. And, if you dont either, you should too. The economist is smarter than you and than me. Make sure you are right before you go blabbering on the internet next time. Because the internet never forgets and the internet never forgives.

Explaining the reason for Rs.2000 note, the economist says that it was to prevent a person with black money from paying tax on Rs. 10000 deposit, then withdrawing that amount and trying to deposit Rs. 10000 fresh black money again on the next day. What a foolish reasoning. If the withdrawals were done with Rs. 1000 new notes or say new notes of Rs. 500 value, then how can the person bring old notes for redeposit trying to hoodwink the bankers ? It is not possible. It will not help reducing future corruption, people might not stash cash going forward fearing such moves in future and they might also use gold/forex and real estate. not every household has an arrangement with a kirana store where they could pay at the end of the month. You might be an well-known person in your locality with a secured job and hence your kirana shop owner trusts you. But the poorest of the poor cant afford this luxury of credit. And all that girl was trying to say was there are still many in india who dont own a bank account and Mr. Debroy admonished her and successfully dodged the question.
sarthak nayak ... and forgot to mention domino effect of arrangement with the kirana store. Kirana Store wala has arrangements with the wholesaler and there is further chain of arrangement. If any point of supply line is affected due to demonetisation, it will have domino effect on entire market and consumers.
I have a question, he said most of the people in rural area have bank accounts. That means some of them still don't have. Instead of saying that he moved it to urban area saying that some people don't have bank accounts in urban area, which is kind of saying that they are doing it intentional. But my question is what about those who don't have it, are you gonna think about it or you are gonna blame someone and skip the question? Sir, those days of taking provisions from kirana stores in urban India is passe. There are more number of people in Urban India without bank a/cs as they come to do menial jobs. How does that logic help if I have black money in 500 notes? and if tell the bank I'm depositing what I had withdrawn yesterday, won't I have to show new notes to bank ? he seems to be explaining another reason of rationing cash withdrawals, not about 2000 note.
His answer does not make any sense. It's one of the dumb yet hilarious explanations I have heard for 2000rs notes. Firstly the logic does not expend for higher amounts which are in crores of rupees. Nobody holding one lakh black money will go through that pain of making it to white. They will simple ask poor relative to deposit in their account. Secondly its obvious that the new 1000rs note will be different from old one because the govt. is adding new security features, so obviously it is distinguishable by naked eye. Thirdly if buy the logic and some one tries to extend it to large amounts, the IT department does not only consider the total amount in your account but also the number of transactions happening in that account. If the transactions are abnormally high for a savings account, they will sent a notice asking for explanation. The RBI has clearly said it is for ease of exchange old notes with new notes and keeping inflation in mind.
He didn't explain it properly but a message on whatsapp was doing the round where a CA explained about it nicely. That was published on news websites as well, u can refer that for better understanding.
If someone doesn't have a bank account you may open an account in any bank, at least public sector ones, with only a photo. No other documents are needed. There will be a cap of Rs. 50,000 in such accounts for credit. For one year maximum credit limit is 100,000. If any bank is not doing it that is a criminal offence.

Why is he saying that dispensing 100 Rs notes will be more difficult to dispense from an ATM - actually you can dispense a higher no of notes of 2000 from an ATM much easier.... and mostly people do not just withdraw a few hundrend notes from an ATM - they withdraw at least 2000...

actually he evaded the question, refuting his logic i would say the same can be done with 500 old note, the question was, why the 1000 note was discontinued and a bigger denomination was issued (2000 note) but he answered why the new notes have been issued, it was not a valid reason in my opinion.

Way back in 1955 PC Mahalnobis, great statistician from ISI made model of Indian economy for second five year for Planning Commission. It helped this country to achieve 5.5 per cent growth rate, highest before economic reforms and comparable to 5.7 per cent achieved during Vajpayee Government. We see Niti Aayog only making speeches instead of working econometric models of economy for proper analysis. If they had made that model and simulated demonetisation in that model, they would realised the futility and mass destruction with this model. However , the Demonization plan is real amazing , but government's poor implementation has caused nucense and trouble to millions and i am one of its victim , I would advise you sir to please know the ground reality , before you comment on certain matter .
Demonetization is a Political decision. In 1969 Indra Gandhi nationalized all banks and this move was supported by the public to the extend that Congress milked it over the next 3 elections. Today if you ask any Economist he will say it was a Bad decision and Indian economy suffered. Similarly Demonetization though Popular will be a big negative for our economy especially employment. .

Well Mr Economist, why were not the new notes designed to be of similar size to the previous notes to avoid re calibration of ATMs, you shouldnt get defensive about people not having bank accounts...all your calculations assume even zero balance and 1 rupee acounts, considering 1 account for a family of 4. too convenient assumptions.

There was no proposal of demonetization.Secondly even if the congress proposed to demonetize and then the opposition at that time opposed on grounds of inconvenience, it was because the move would have served no other purpose at that time. Where was the secrecy that this govt had in congress' proposal? If they couldnt keep it secret the very intention is defeated!!!!! Congress simply proposed it and hoped that they will be able to hide all there black money before the plan is implemented and then simple inconvenience the common people. Also at that time most people in the villages didn't even have bank accounts.. Before commenting like a fool think of all the reasons why it was opposed at that time and why its a masterstroke now.
