“Would you wear these shorts? Would you ride the subway with these shorts?” My answer was already no but just the thought of sitting down on a subway seat in short-shorts sent a chill down my spine.
😆 I’m accidentally on trend, i’ve mixed feminine and masculine for work for years, only because it’s the only way I manage smart casual. Well I guess everyone can be on trend at least once in a 20 year fashion cycle 😂
I have always called it my “Hepburn” look because it is a little of Katherine (winter Autumn) and a bit of Audrey (summer spring) Both revolutionized fashion for women and introduced a type of pants (slacks for K and capris for A)
Hot pants from the 70s. Shorts with a midi length unbuttoned front skirt. Probably sewn from a Simplicity pattern. School sewing project! I remember them well.
Yesss, I had a shorts/shirt top combined with a long, flowing, open front maxi skirt: black with tiny yellow flower pattern. I wore it once to a country fair & farmers eyes nearly popped out of their heads. 😂
I’m having an eighties flashback with these trends. Flowy metal , masculine/feminine (where’s my Esprit argyle sweater vest? Or my thrifted mens suit jacket ?) big flowers, one big accent earring, sheer and flowy, sporty (remember silk baseball Jackets?) Ah, the good ole days!
Those shorts were considered street wear in 1970. I recall wearing them for both casual and dressy occasions, sometimes with colored tights and boots. They were actually more demure than their predecessor, the micro-mini.
I've definitely considered shorts with a transparent skirt, even though I am fat & 55. Not to work (I'm a teacher), but especially in summer I think it is a new way to be comfortable, & more elegant than just shorts. I also loved the huge flowers! Thankyou for another inspiring video.🙏🏽
Love the review ! But the only trend I like is the masculine/feminine mix. I’ve often used a watered-down version of this in the past and am also a great lover of mixing classic with something quirky or casual with something formal. I think these are great techniques for satisfying different parts of your personality. ❤
I'm late commenting, but I thought about my wardrobe and I've been wearing masculine and feminine as well. For example, a military-inspired olive jacket with feminine pieces, like a floral midi dress, or a maxi skirt, and sometimes even paired with combat boots. I'm tall so I personally avoid wearing short shorts.
Unfortunately much as I love clothes and fashion, at 65 I don’t think any of these looks would be apropos - I’d stop traffic for the wrong reason . I did like the Chanel cardigan over the tiny shorts - I knitted a similar one 45 years ago which everyone called my “ ethnic Peruvian horse blanket “! I loved it though , it would have been on trend . Dear Justine , can you do something on how us older ladies can use these looks , translate them into something we can enjoy ?
While you can absolutely wear whatever you want as someone who is 26 I now understand how much bodies change as you get older! I think that’s why it’s so hard for people to make looks for “older” women because there’s so much more variety! It’s the same reason so many books are written about teens and young adults, we are more “relatable” because we don’t have as many distinct life experiences yet. Kinda sad though because I think variety in art is really awesome and age is a fairly unexplored category (especially for women)
Your videos never disappoints me. I used to think of fashion like an unnecessary overhyped stuff, you have changed my perspective drastically. I loved the masculine feminine and also the floral trend. I expected liquid metal to be too flashy but somehow it's not.
I love when Justine does fashion trend videos! It is so fun to think about what I already have that might works for the current looks. I have a dress that I love to wear that has a realistic tulip design... I am even more excited to wear it this spring!
I went the other way during the lockdowns. I noticed that I just sat on the couch when I wore sweatpants. I upgraded all my sweatpants to linen pants (still with a stretchy waistband but a very different look) and invested in some very comfy bralettes. For the masc/femme I’ve always kinda done that, I’ve been wearing men’s jeans and watches for years paired with very feminine shoes. No tiny shorts for me - I hate sitting down and sticking to a hot plastic seat. I want them mid thigh at least. 😄 I like the metallic trend. I have a satin gold top that I haven’t worn in years because I thought it looked dated but I guess I can take it out again.
I hate sticking to chairs too, but love wearing short shorts, so when I’m going somewhere in shorts, I’ll often wear a cardigan dress, open, over my outfit like a duster jacket. It’s been so helpful for me to discover this trick! Also, your linen pants sound wonderful
In England, Chanel style jackets are all over the high street this Spring, I think it’s been influenced by the Chanel exhibition at the V&A which has been a total sell out, great video as always Justine 🙂
I always loved the masc&fem trend, its been here for so long that it became my way to dress up, as my style is so simple and casual. I've watched some videos of trends and nothing realy stuck with me, it just sparked a new whole love to my wardrobe and looking ahead to Spring and "fresh" way to dress as winter makes its way out.
The tiny shorts are a return to the early 1970s hot pants which I wore with gusto but which mothers were not too hot on. They were worn with matching mini dress tops. Mine were pink with flowers everywhere. And I made them myself. Thanks for the memories, Justine!
Back in the day I wore tiny black shorts with fishnets and a see thru top when I'd go out dancing. Won't work too well with my current body type, but the shorts paired with a sheer dress give that same vibe.
Justine, my question is, what do you do with these unique garments once the trend is over? Like the realistic flowers, what happens to those garments when the flower becomes "so last year"?
I'd say it depends on how you style that detail with the rest of the outfit. Flowers come and go in terms of trends, so they'll likely come again in the future. But I'd agree if you said that it's more of a trendy thing than "masculine - feminine", for instance.
This year, I am only buying basics that help me wear clothes I already own (like long-sleeve shirts to wear under my sweaters and a belt for a dress). However, I like understanding why the people around me are wearing what they are. I love how you explain how we can apply these trends to our daily lives in more practical ways, Justine!
Thank you Justine for your reviews. Yes, I too feel those shirts are too short for anyone. I like the idea of longer shirts with a black semi or sheer flowy black skirt.
Men's clothing around here is thicker and better made than the female counterpart which is usually thinner and made less well.. My daughter has been filching from the men's section for years! so glad it is catching up with her.. she has always been stylish in my eyes.
I've always mixed masculine and feminine in my style. I would try the liquid metal trend in an accessory like a purse or scarf, maybe a tank top. I absolutely will not be wearing tiny shorts.
Moi non plus. Ultra short shorts are no longer an option, if they ever were one for me. I'm in my sixties, lost ~40 lbs in the 3-6 months before and the first 6-12 months of the pandemic (Dec 2019 - ~Jan/Feb 2021), and although I have regained 5-10 lbs and no longer look quite so cadaverishly thin, I look better with at least the top half of my thighs covered (hiding loose skin). I think even in my twenties I only liked showing that much leg with a swim suit.
@@amydevol8224 Back in the 70's I can remember wearing burgundy velvet hotpants and stacked lame knee boots to go clubbing. It must have looked daft then, and it certainly would now. Every decade has it 'OMG did I really wear THAT?' And short shorts is one of those, in my opinion.
@flower-ss2jt I also went to the disco clubs of the late '70s/early '80s. My preference at that time was for shiny lycra leotards usually a faux wrap style in a tank or long sleeved version depending on the season, a matching lycra wrap or pull-on skirt, Sheer Energy or similar compression pantyhose or tights, and sandles which were exchanged for highland dance ghillies once inside the club and we had established a base of operations, basically dance gear. At least half of us were involved with Scottish country dancing, some also took highland dance and competed throughout the Southeast highland games and were there strictly to dance. The group was usually a half dozen or more.
@@amydevol8224 Love Scottish dancing, but always did that is the leather dancing shoes. And the dresses were far removed from 'club stuff'! Got a tendon injury doing Scottish dancing - would never have beleived Scottish dancing was dangerous.
I agree wholeheartedly with you, not so short shorts covered with longer somewhat see-thru skirt or pants. I didn't think I would like the metals but I do.
Love the flower artwork, especially the McQueen one. I like the sheer covering over the mini shorts. The silver fluid pieces look comfortable and classy. I'm petite in height, so I'm not crazy for oversized masculine wear. Wonderful review. Thank you, Justine.
I will only take up the trends of masculine/feminine and refined athleisure, which I do anyway. And where it works for me, the idea of flowers - or in my case, other starkly contrasting forms - against a dark background. This can also be done beautifully with a large silk flower brooch or similar formed piece of material.
Justine, I just want to say that you've helped me find my style in every way. Just about every piece of clothing I buy has mostly natural fibers, I know how to look for pieces that are well made, I know what pieces go well with my skin tone, I've found my main inspiration (timeless parisian), which includes my makeup style (natural, highlighting my features rather than covering, with a pop of red lipstick) and I know which clothing works with my body shape. I grew up with a single mother who was a total hippie- ripped jeans, soft tops with holes in them, no makeup- and you've taught me all I needed to know to be confident and to be true to myself. I'm enormously grateful to you ❤️
I love the mix of masculine and feminine. It was a trend in the past like prairie dresses with undone buttons to expose the legs with cowboy boots, combat boots or riding boots. It was super feminine with masculine accessories like leather belts, and Navaho jewelry. Love this combo.
The black Dior dress with shorts underneath I would wear out at night or to a special occasion. It's so classy. Thank you Justine, I love these sneak peaks at trends ahead and YES!!! I too love to sit in a cafe and people watch!!!
yes to the tiny shorts. I live in California so there are many opportunities to wear barely there shorts and I've always done it anyway, so that trend feels old to me. but I am happy to see it on the runway!
I like a lot of these! I discovered I already have some tiny shorts - but I bought them to make my swimsuit more modest... I really like the soft/hard trend and as I sew and will make a sheer skirt with matching shorts (and a toning in shirt, too, all in dark green). I'll also make a blouse from a rose print I have stashed away and aim to wear it with trousers.
I’ve been doing the masculine-feminine ‘trend’ for years. Full disclosure: it’s my default style a.k.a resting butch😮😂. Love the broad shoulders and structure of the shackets and trenches. I tend to wear them from late fall well into spring. Great video, Justine!
What can I see I need fashion help, I guess that's why I look to Justine! I feel like I don't know how to dress for my body type, and Idk even what that is because it crosses into many categories. Send help!!
I think the realistic flowers are fascinating. I’m not a floral print person, but these are something else. Statement flowers. Bold. I also like the huge earrings, although I don’t have the face for them, I don’t think. And I think they’d be uncomfortable to wear. But they look fabulous.
I’ve been wondering when I will ever wear my short black silk Mayle shorts. I thought the shorts were too young for me and almost gave them away. Now I will put my Rozae Nicols sheer slip dress over them. Old clothes renewed! Thank you Justine!
Always so informative and fascinating. I learn so much from your measured responses to things. Watching some of these trends and seeing some of the red carpet wear, I am often left wondering if some of the clothes lean into figure skating costume.
Thank you, Justine, for this review! I love these videos! What I especially like in the post-pandemic trends is focus on natural materials, neutral colors, and versatility that bring comfort first and focus less on objectification of women. I remember in the past there were lots of trends that were "sexy" and revealing AND uncomfortable to wear in almost all situations. I am glad it's changing now.
Tiny shorts were my high school days in the 2000s. I would never wear those to work unless I worked in fashion in a specific area that it was appropriate. I know Im getting old because all the trends I grew up with that seemed new to me are all coming back around!
Justine - your dolman, v neck is fabulous. During the 80’s I had this similar color in a dolman banded bottom sweater paired with silk velvet pants & high heels for the disco. I am geared toward clean necklines and minimalism. Outstanding video!🎉❤
Love the liquid metals trend. Not easy to wear on an everyday basis, but I definitely will try! (Accessories, or pairing with sporty / casual). Also I LOVED the Gucci looks, all of them. So modern and...wearable!
Short shorts are great when your best assets are your legs. I wouldn’t wear extremely short versions (like swim suit bottoms really), but pretty short - yes. They’re just the comparable idea of a crop top looking great on pear and hourglass shapes.
Former trend predictor here! I've bought just about all your predictions EXCEPT the large florals and the micro-shorts. Three pairs of metallic shoes, vintage jackets from the 90s (very high quality) and navy blue blazers. I don't care for the florals and I think the micro-shorts are awful - even with a sheer overly of a jacket, skirt or flowing trousers. Ladies, keep your dignity but have fun, too! Thank you, Justine, and lovelovelove your product line - much success to you!
I look forward to your videos because you are so straight forward with information. How is your house renos going. Southern France is so beautiful with large open areas not developed. I can't wait to see what you do with such a stunning home with the great bones it has. Best of luck.
I loved the Dior dress with the shorts and sheer skirt over it. I agree, I’d prefer the shorts longer for me personally to wear it. It’s elegant. As for floral, love the idea of painting florals on a jean jacket. I’d probably buy a jacket via second hand to paint on it. Of course I appreciate your “devilish” quote!
Liquid metal is lovely, combined with matte and neutral things. Huge earring(s) - lovely, but actually seldom comfortable to wear. See-through fabrics with flounces - yes! One does not have to show body parts which are/ are no longer in their prettirst form, but some details of clothing can have slighter look. Or one can combine materials with different thickness.
Love the masculine feminine aesthetic and the sporty chic stuff. Excited to put these in action. Statement earrings too? Absolutely. Thanks for the vid, Justine. Great analysis.
I live in the tropics - and athletic wear is what I see all the time - but I want to look more pulled together and chic- I love the idea of curated casual fabrics with Chic style - probably alter thrift prices to create my looks but it’s great and yes I want to paint on a silk jacket
Hello Justine! ❤ We are always waiting for your opinion. 😊 For me-flowers for spring-ground breaking (in Miranda's words), fashion is closest to my heart. Love that purple dress on the left, not sure who made that. Very beautiful! ❤
Sporty is definitely still in. In the future I see trends either riffing off sports style more, or going deeper into retro, borrowing from 70s-80s classic elegance. I think fashion loves contrasts and reviving past trends with a new flare.
Would definitely do the shorts trend. I live in the tropics, so shorts are not considered inappropriate work attire in some places. I work in wardrobe, the “dress code” is fluid. I would probably wear them with a sheer or crocheted cardigan, like a beach cover and maybe a silky solid color top, tucked into the shorts. Throw on a pair of comfy sandals and off I go
Back in the early nineties, I did masculine feminine with olive cargo pants or shorts with silk blouses. Always has been one of my favorite looks. I would get nice compliments every time.
Hi Justine, excellent review, thanks. I love the new “trend”/inspiration. I especially love the sheer long skirts with the shorts, however at my age I would wear a knee length (72j under them. I also think the large strategically placed florals are gorgeous. The lady I buy fabric from already has some of these from Italy, they are stunning. Great ideas for sewing. I am not so much into the casual chic, but that blue one is stunning. Take care
I do like the masculine/feminine mix. It seems like the most wearable trend, and also works with clothing I already own. It will be fun to lean into this trend a bit. I do appreciate your naming that fashion houses need to take seriously that nobody’s is going back to heels. We’ll forever is a long time, but I agree it will be decades before women wear high heels,to work, dinner, wherever again. I love love love the general acceptance of sneakers and loafers.
I wore hot pants ( tiny short shorts) in the seventies. My favorite pair was white. I wore them with a flowered tunic top with a zipper all the way down the front. My white Barbarella boots that came up in points above my knees completed the look. 😊
As always you have me thinking. I can do the many of the looks except the knickers. Like you I prefer longer and another layer. The bold flowers means I can get out some me made garments to wear this season.
I did wear the tiny shorts in my twenties and enjoyed it! Now turning 35, this would feel inappropriate in my town and would grab very wrong and unwanted attention, but I feel nostalgic about it. I internally support the girls that will pull it off this year 😁
As a petite woman (5'1", 112 lbs) I've learned that big flowers and big prints can overwhelm. I love florals for spring and stick with smaller prints for tops and dresses with solid pants or skirts. My size is the same reason that I don't wear tiny shorts. It's a fashion fail for me as I look like a little kid. Thanks, Justine for your well thought out and intelligent fashion evaluations!
im a plus size 53 yr old. I love clothes and love fashion. However, i don't always trust plus size fashion to give me insperation. But this sure did. I have A LOT of clothes and I'm trying the 5 rule just cause i need to slow down here. This definitly gave me inspiration. I remember wearing oversize blazers with hot pants with tights and femme fatale shoes. Mostly all black cause i wasn't as flashy as I am now lol. I have a blazer or two that are more masculine and no I won't be parring them with any hot pants any time soon though. But this video gave me an idea, i nave a lovely leopard print sleevless dress. I can pare it with my black sweater vest, belt and one of my blazers. Probably not my black one, but my brown plaid or wear my cream coloured angora sweater jacket. Shoes though are stumping me, as i am not into heels much anymore as I have MS. I usually do wedges now, which could work or.. wait i have a great pair of red swede flats. I think that would round it out nicely. Or if its raining my combat boots lol. I also have an oversize striped blazer that is statement initself, I need to work on an outfit for that. I need more flowy skirts I think.
I live in a hot area in Australia and short shorts are always in fashion, haha. But definitely only as casual wear, not appropriate for anything remotely formal, you would feel pretty exposed. Metal trend is actually way more low key than I was expecting and several very beautiful examples on the Oscars carpet a few days ago. Personally I do not follow trends much but I certainly enjoy analysing them!
I’m seeing metals but they’re all silver, gold works better for me but seems to be missing on the runway. Would not wear hot pants shorts! I love mixing masculine and feminine, so not much change there. I like your take: trends are options to keep in mind but not a must. Overall I find style more interesting than fashion.
I’m kind of excited about the micro shorts/knickers! I am also a rather petite person so I think it would be less shocking on shorter legs. I love the idea of a sheer layer on top too!
