Acid reflux is a digestive problem in which stomach acid and other stomach contents unintentionally back up into the esophagus. Generally, acid reflux causes symptoms like heartburn in the chest and burning in the esophagus. This problem can be very uncomfortable and unpleasant for some people.
The main cause of acid reflux is the weakness of the muscles that are located between the stomach and the esophagus. In normal conditions, these muscles act as a valve to prevent the contents of the stomach from escaping into the esophagus. But in some people, these muscles are weakened in such a way that as soon as the stomach presses more, acid and stomach contents penetrate to the top of the esophagus.
Factors such as obesity, pregnancy, bending over after eating, taking certain medications, smoking, and alcohol consumption can be factors that increase the risk of acid reflux. Some common complications associated with acid reflux include heartburn, indigestion, and even large bowel obstruction.
Treatment of acid reflux can include dietary changes (such as eating smaller and more frequent meals, avoiding fatty and bland foods, and avoiding bending over after eating), the use of antacid medications (such as H2 receptor antagonists, and Proton pump inhibitors) and in more severe cases, surgical treatment is possible.
