Hello and Welcome to this episode of RPGGamer Top 5s, and this time as part of a series on the top RPG's on each system, we're going to be doing the top five RPG's on the Commodore 64.
Commonly referred to as the C64 or CBM 64, it was released in 1982 by Commodore Business Machines, it has 64 kilobytes of RAM, hence the name, powered by a MOS Technology 6510 running at 1.023 MHZ in the US, or 0.985 MHZ in the UK, the differing television frequencies required for NTSC or PAL accounting for the difference.
But the processor wasn't what made the C64, it was the custom chips. With a VIC2 graphics chip capable of 320 x 200 pixel resolution in 16 colours with 8 hardware sprites, the C64 excelled at moving things around the screen for action games. The sound chip is the almighty SID 6581 chip, with three channels, which was far beyond anything else available at the time being capable of some amazing tunes when used by a skilled composer.
The C64 rapidly became the biggest selling computer of all time, with an estimated 17 million units sold. This is an enormous number for a computer, seeing as the number 2 on the list is the Commodore Amiga at 6 million units.
The range of games available for the system is absolutely vast, with around 10,000 commercially released titles, so we're really only going to scratch the surface of what was available, and really this is just a selection of those that I personally played.

My favorites would be The Bard's Tale, the Zork trilogy, Pool of Radiance, and Wasteland.

If you have never played The Magic Candle, please do so! It's my all time favourite RPG on any platform, and it's a shame very few people are aware of its existance!

Sounds so familiar, I'll need to look it out and give it a try, cheers.

Simulations, RPGs and Adventure games were my favourite genres! I preferred using my brain that being an expert joystick waggler!

My reflexes have never been up to twitch style games, so Sims, Adventures and RPG's were very much my genre's too.

The C64 had so many great RPGs, you could easily do a top 25 and still miss some great games. The Ultima Series. The D&D gold box games, The Phantasie series. Zork series, I could keep listing more.

I had thought about returning and doing "another" top 5 for various systems, but they would be endless as everyone has their favourite game which I would miss out.

Ultima 3 or 4 would’ve been my number 1.

Never played those two until much after I'd moved on from the C64, but they're both lovely games. I picked up Bards Tale Trilogy on the PC recently, and have been surprised at how well the gameplay has held up. Would be nice if they'd update a bunch of these classics while retaining their original gameplay.

RPGGamer I played the crap out of 3&4. Even 6 was fun.

Elite was left out because it was on many different systems. Now #1 Bard's Tale. Huh? Bard's Tale was released on more systems.
@RPGGamer
@RPGGamer 2 года назад
Lol. It was more because it's more famous on it's original system, the Beeb Micro. But since I never covered the Beeb (or the Apple where I believe Bards Tale originated), I probably should have just included it.
@Widkey

Bard's Tale wasn't unique to the C64 either.. so, we should also recognize Ultima IV & V, Questron I & 2, Phantasie series, Legacy of the Ancients, the SSI D&D series, and Telengard and Temple of Apshai.
@RPGGamer
@RPGGamer Год назад
Been a while since I made these, but these early videos were mainly the first systems I played certain games on, and sadly I never played any of those on the c64, although the SSI games I did play for years on end on the Amiga.

I have to admit that while I loved Demons Winter, I never got very far into it, constantly dying. Cheers for the comment, much appreciated.

Anybody ever play the "Alternate Reality" series on the C-64. They were never huge hits and only 2 of the 5 games in the series were ever released. But they were really ahead of their times, the concept was you could build a character in one game and move back and forth between games and new areas would open up depending on which games you owned. Unfortunately with only and City and the Dungeon released this concept never reached its full potential. Also there were active guilds you could join with their own quest lines and requirements for joining. There was also a hidden alignment system that played a huge role behind the scenes determining what factions would be friendly or hostile to you, or even what areas you could enter.

I remember playing The City, but I have to admit I found it absolutely confusing at the time, so never tried The Dungeon.
@Dervraka
@Dervraka 4 года назад
@@RPGGamer The City really didn't have much of a plot because it was pretty much just to start and level up a character for the later games (which I think turned a lot of gamers off, that there really wasn't a goal other than fight monsters and get gold), The Dungeon was far better and my favorite of the two. It had a real plot and you didn't need to transfer a city character to play it anyway (though it did make the starting areas easier and gave you some bonus content).

I still own several of the C64 versions of the games in your top 5 in their original boxes. Lords of Midnight, Shadowfire, and both male and female versions of Alter Ego. Of these, I played Alter Ego the most, as it was easy enough for me to figure out as a young kid. Your video was the first time I thought about Alter Ego since playing it all those years ago. Anyway, my two favorite RPGs that I ever played on the C64 were the Pool of Radiance and Might & Magic 1: Secret of the Inner Sanctum.

The boxes were always so wonderful. I remember getting so many games back in the 80's, and reading through manual as we were walking or getting the bus home. The novella's you'd get, maps and detailed instructions which would add so much to the game world even before you started to play. While steam is oh-so convenient, I kind of pity kids today without any physical component to their games.

Demons Winter was great, also pretty much all other SSI rpgs. Ultima of course and one of my favorite c64 rpgs would be Master of Magc :)
@RPGGamer
@RPGGamer 5 лет назад
Master of Magic is a stone cold classic, loved that game (and the soundtrack) so much. I'm planning on doing a "More" Top Five RPG's on the C64 video, as I realised I'd missed Master of Magic, Times of Lore (which I played to absolute death), and a couple of others. Maybe should have done a top 10 instead :)

@@RPGGamer Looking forward to it, though if you ask me, dont do a top 10, I barely clicked on this one because of my inherent dislike of "Top x" videos^^ But do it as is the most pleasing to you and it will be fine :)

Master of Magic, while a terrific game, was more of a turn-based adventure game than an RPG

We all have our favorites and opinions :-) I wouldn't consider Mercenary a true RPG but would put Times of Lore in there. I never played Lords of Midnight. No Ultima.... hmm. I'm glad you mentioned Wasteland. But fun to watch, thanks and have a great day
@RPGGamer

These were my favourites back in the day, and I never played Ultima until much later, and they are truly wonderful and groundbreaking games. Mercenary got crowbarred in, as I felt that the immersion into the world and range of options available for you to play it as you wanted made it near enough an RPG for my purposes :)

Atari 8-bit computer, POKEY sound chip (also used in Arcades) was on par with Sid, maybe better, no doubt, and Atari 8-bit graphic chip ANTIC could move any sprite in any direction without slowdown

This feels like an argument from the 1980's. My atari is better than your C-64, but at least we've not got Spectrums.

This video was very much based on what I played back in the day, and Ultima was sadlly not among them. Had great fun with the series on the Amiga later though.

Any Idea what game this is. Game Intro Starts off like an Arcade - you see a blue knight running around fighting creature stabbing them with a sword. Whenever a Creature is on screen music plays. You get health by picking up gold and each screen has different encounters. Think Like Resident Evil so the playing field always changes. At one point you come across a Castle with Teeth. Any Idea what C64 game this was? I can't seem to find it!
@RPGGamer

I don't recognise it, but it makes me think perhaps of one of the magic knight series of games. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_Knight

Wouldn't alter ego be considered more of a "life simulator" by today's standards though? Demon's Winter is a criminally underrated RPG on the C64. But I get that a lot of the North American RPGs weren't nearly as big in Europe like the Gold Box Series The Bard's Tale was class (I loved the entire series) Newcomer is also a pretty good RPG (from Hungary) although technically that's a relatively new game as it only came out in 2001
@RPGGamer
@RPGGamer 3 года назад
I really stretched the definition of RPG it breaking point with some of the early systems, as the Atari 2600, or ZX-81 would likely only really have 1 or 2 games which met a more strict definition. I remember having Demons Winter, and I remember it being really hard, so I never really got into it, but was definitely aware I was missing something. I recently got the Bards Tale remastered versions on the PC and have put 50+ hours into them already, still great games, although I seem to be stuck on the 2nd last dungeon on Bards Tale 2. Cheers for the cool comments, much appreciated.

@@RPGGamer You should totally try out Ultima iv. Just have a note pad ready. Also try auto duel, Operation Firestart, and Star Flight. Ultima iv was my personal favorite but Ultima V just expands on it.

Cheers mate, have to admit that I never played the Ultima games back on the C64. Have a feeling they were disk only, and I only had a tape drive, which might explain it. Played them since though and they are great games.
