Nestled in the San Jacinto Mountains, Idyllwild is a small town that has continued the tradition of locally-owned shops and restaurants - no chain stores here. . We often visit to experience the peace and quiet of Idyllwild. If you are ready to get away from the traffic jams, or the noisy city life, this is the town for you. Idyllwild is perfect for our day hikes and as we mentioned the starting point for our two-night backpacking adventures.
We know you guys love the GPS coordinates - so here they are
33.7467° N, 116.7153° W
One - Lake Fulmer.
This small man-made lake is an oasis right off Highway 243. Very popular for fishing, hiking, and strolling with the dog (on a leash). To hike or fish here you will need a recreation pass so, here's the link

The parking is across the street so be extra careful crossing the busy highway.
EIDT - The picnic area is adjacent to the lake not in the parking lot.
Two - Humber Park
One of the most popular destinations in Idyllwild. Once again you need a recreation pass. As you can probably guess this is one of our favorite places. Click on over to our Idyllwild hikes to check out our twelve different adventures that begin here.

Three - Cafe Aroma
Lunch at Cafe Aroma came next and the new owners are off to a great start and we were thankful that Erika was able to come and have a brief chat with us. Go and have lunch or dinner and tell them we sent you.

Four - The Idyllwild Area Historical Society Museum
This is truly is a treat to learn more about Idyllwild and the surrounding areas. The gardens are a secluded oasis right off the road. Check out their website or better still sign up for their annual membership.

Five - Idyllwild Ice Cream
Stop five was such a yummy treat. Idyllwild Ice Cream and Jerky is simply the best ice cream in town (in our opinion) Go and visit and tell them Wilderness Wanderers highly recommended them.

BONUS FEATURE - Black Mountain Coffee
How did we stumble on this gem? The smell of roasting coffee of course. Black Mountain Coffee Roasting is such a wonderful coffee shop. Chris and Katie were the kindest of hosts and we were blown away by their hospitality and Chris' willingness to open the roasting room to Cat and the camera! Katie was amazing at juggling her family and still served us the BEST blends of coffee. Even though this didn't initially make our top five - next time, it will be our first stop for sure. Click on their website to book a tasting or even join their monthly coffee club and get their incredible coffee delivered.

I'm in my mid-fifties. When I was in my early thirties I had meetings in Palm Desert. I had lots of free time, so one day I drove out to Idyllwild and fell in love with it. I ended up driving out twice a day for a week. It was enchanting. This was in the late '90s. I had the same meeting a year later and did the same thing --- drove out twice a day. I had the oddest feeling that I had driven across that grassy plateau with the pine trees before --- it looked so familiar, I felt I had driven those roads before. Then when I got to Idyllwild I had the same feeling of familiarity. But I couldn't figure out why I felt like I had been there before. I wondered if it might remind me of a New Hampshire town I had visited as a kid growing up in Massachusetts. I'm a mega-Elvis fan, and became a fan when I was in first grade. And a couple of years ago I was watching the film Kid Gallahad. I hadn't seen the film since the first time I saw it in grade school. So I'm watching the film and it looked really familiar to me. I felt I had been there myself. So I looked up the film online, and read that it had been filmed in Idyllwild. That's when I realized that the reason I felt I had been there before when I drove out there in my 30s was that I had an unconscious memory from that one time I had watched the film as a kid in grade school. It was wild.........Idyllwild.

What do you mean I lost you? You mean you don't see the connection between the Elvis movie and my feeling I had been to Idyllwild before? @@lonnmoore5568

Stop believing everything you read. I live in idyllwild and all the few missing person cases are easily explainable. People come up here with no wilderness experience and have no idea how to survive in nature. There is nothing mysterious about this area. Or I should say there is so people like you don’t end up here

Ah. We wondered what they were referencing. We lived in Redlands for many years and loved coming to Idyllwild and hiking up there. Totally understandable that people who tackle some of those difficult hikes sadly get lost. Thanks for clarifying 💕

I home roast in my oven. I use Sumatran beans, which give a really clean finish. I roast half Italian/half French. Delish.

That’s impressive. We might give that a try!!

@@WhereTheyWander22 I buy my green beans from a local roaster who sells them. They have two separate price menus --- one for roasted, one for green. You have to roast them at 500 degrees. I just roast them in a cast iron skillet. After you hear them begin to crack you have to check them because they'll start to burn eventually. You'll see there is a quick shift where they go from green to burning. That's when you start stirring the beans to keep the burning even. So you'll have a period of about 10 minutes at the end when you're pulling the beans out, stirring them around, and putting them back in the oven. They start burning on the top, especially around the edges of the pan. I will warn you, they do get smoky, so that might turn some people off. And my smoke alarm does go off every time. The way I get it half French, half Italian, is toward the end I let it burn more on the top --- for longer. That leaves you with some really dark Italian roast beans, and some lighter brown beans. If you can't find a local roaster to sell them to you, you can buy them online.

What is an "adventure pass"? And I didn't see a Link for it in your description? Gotta love that lunch began with beignets! LOL! And I adored the painted deer! Adorable! Also...now I have to go see the giant cowboy hat! I have a weakness for really big stuff and really teeny stuff...so that's been added to my list! We have a local coffee place here and it's a treat to go for a tasting! That would be my happy place too. Thanks for sharing!

So glad you enjoyed it. The beignets were AMAZING. The giant cowboy hat sells awesome hats and clothing. Thanks for letting us know the link wasn’t showing. We’ve updated the info but here it is. bit.ly/2V1xUuC

You can get it at the gas station that you hit on the way up. Or pretty much anywhere up there.
