Top 10 French travel phrases you NEED to know & How to Use Them! [Step-by-Step Tutorial]
1. Bonjour! (formal) / Salut! (informal) - This simple means. ‘Hello’.
2. Au revoir - this means goodbye, literally it means ‘to the seeing again.
3. Merci - This means ‘thank you’. You can also add the word ‘beaucoup’. So, ‘merci beaucoup’ means, thank you very much.
4. Oui / No - These mean ‘yes’ and ‘no’ respectively.’
5. Excusez-moi / Pardon - both of which mean ‘excuse me’. The difference between Pardon and Excusez-moi is that Pardon implies you’re just asking forgiveness, while Excusez-moi often (but not always) comes with the idea of needing to get someone’s attention.
6. Combien ça coûte? - which means ‘how much does it cost’? The most common reply to this is ça coûte….. Meaning “it costs…”
7. Comment je peux aller à......? - which means ‘how do I get to...’? - This means ‘how do you get to...’? - Use a map to point where you want to go or try and say the name of the place with the French pronunciation. For example, the Eiffel Tower is, la tour Eiffel
8. Où se trouvent les toilettes? - which means ‘where are the toilets?’
9. J'aimerais... - which means ‘I would like…
10. Tchin-tchin! or Santé! ... - both of which means ‘cheers’. Santé literally means ‘health’ while Tchin-tchin! is a linguistic relic of the British Empire which comes from 18th century Chinese ''ch'ing- ch'ing'' meaning ''please-please''.

If I open with a French phrase or question to a Frenchman I get a french answer which I don't understand! awkward. The pleasantries like bonjour, merci, s'il vous plaît are useful but beyond that as a tourist with no French language skills I will always have to ask if they speak English right off the bat.

Same here and the same thing happened to us in Germany we would just say hello or excuse me followed by a do you speak English? I'm making my new year's resolution to speak another language.

Right. It's funny that guide books will tell you how to say all the important things completely ignoring the fact that you'll also have to understand the response.

I learned some Spanish and Portuguese for trips and when I used phrases in those languages as a nurse w/patients that is exactly what happened. They’d start speaking rapidly in their language.

I didn’t have this problem. The key is to butcher the pronunciation so poorly that they immediately know you don’t speak French.

I went to Paris about 5 years ago, with a fluent French speaker, so I never had to learn or even try to speak the language….and after the first word I said in English, i felt like everyone hated me! Now taking my mom there for my 40th bd…and I feel a bit anxious for not knowing the language at all. So thank you for this very useful video! 💕

We will be in Paris for 6 nights, then on a tour of France for 2 weeks. So, I would like to know some basics. The first half of this video was easy and stuff I already knew, but then I was lost with the longer phrases in the 2nd half. Guess I'll have to watch this a bunch more times. Anyway, impressive job on the video and a well deserved thumbs up!

Excellent video! Short and to the point. Thank you. My wife and I have been to France many times and are thinking about retiring there. My biggest challenge with speaking my very limited French is not those basic words to say, but rather understanding the answers! What I usually find that works is to say, something like "Parle lentement, s'l vous plait." And if I've said that correctly the person will usually happily slow down their speaking.

I'm heading to France next week so I'm doing a last minute bit of prep for need to know phrases. I'm a little confused because other sources have told me Je voudrais in place of J'aimerais, is there a difference or are they just different ways of saying the same thing? Great video, thanks for the helpful phrases!
