Oh man Clarkson. He has got it all wrong. The old bug was beautiful, fuel efficient, and great on any road. As an owner of both, a 1966 and a 2004, I would much prefer the older one, no question. It is stylish, sounds lovely, and I don't feel like I'm driving a 4 billion pound tank.
I've got 2003 1.8t and absolutely love it. It's fast and fun to drive and mine's been very reliable too. Had it for over three years and 60000 miles now and it has never left me on the road. Love my Bug!
I bought an 02 beetle for $900 from my sister so it was practically free. I love the car too and get so many compliments everyday even though it's a 19 year old car.
@@michael85225 I have a 2003 New Beetle and this is my beloved car. I can't imagine riding any other. He is absolutely cute and I feel he will stay with me for many years.
@@celaeno917 my sister bought the car in 2016 and got tired of it so I offered to take it off her hands. In those years it has never broken down or left any of us stranded. My sister had the car running on low oil and no coolant and the engine still lasted and runs strong. I give it much needed love and maintenance and it runs even better now. My siblings all owned countless Chevys and each one has always broke down, overheated or the engine would end up failing but not my VW.
I've had like 20 Type 1 Beetles. I've also had a German built 1980 2 door Rabbit C 1.6 Gas and a 1983 GTI and I've loved them all. For me the new beetle is just what he said (an old GTI with a fancy body) it's like the type 1 and the rabbit had a baby.... It's everything I love about Volkswagen! At least the 1998-2005 ones. 2006 and up are computer nightmares
Oh come on! Yes, the old beetle was smaller, & had better fuel economy, but it was slow & uncomfortable on long runs, the heater was pathetic, & in the rain during winter, the windows were permanently misted up. Having had both old & new, at my age now, the new beetle is smooth, fast, & comfortable & has all the creature comforts u need, whereas the old model was a good car for a different era, & is now an enthusiast & restorers mount.
I prefer the original beetle as it was designed as an affordable car. I do like the new beetle it's really cool in its design, but it's not cheap. It's more expensive than the Polo, Golf and Up. The original beetle was designed to be a cheap affordable car and I think VW could have designed a beetle that was similar in shape but a lot more affordable.
ELPaso1990TX maybe they at VW will get it and go back to basics on the original concepts and reasons of why the VW Bettle was built and sold. Economic hard times have not gone away for most people.
Back in the 50s, 60s, and 70s the VW Bettle and the Karman Gia was called the poormans Porsche because both were built in the same auto factory in Germany and used the old air cool pancake motor so it was called because of it's flat profile, and both makes had rear motors. Today's new VWs have Audi motors, from the Bettle to the VW SUVs all power trains are Audi. That's why repairs are expensive on these cars now. I've owned 4 VWs so far and love them, these cars are fun to drive.
cougar1ne I wouldn't bet on it. Maybe if the airbags happen to deploy. I do believe this was a selling point to consumers who lived in areas where it flooded or those places like Holland where many dike system's to control tide waters are used. But that's just my speculation. That was a nice feature and assurance knowing water wasn't coming into the cabin of the VW if you drove through high water.
Jeremy bought a Beetle!! haha the type 1 beetle is one of the best cars ever made! im getting one as soon as possible, but my everyday driver is my mercedes. + Herbie has great handling!!
I’ve got a 2001 2.0 GLS, and it may be biased but since it was technically my first car I love it. But it’s also got everything I want while I get my camaro roadworthy. Especially power-wise that thing SCOOTS. That’s the one car I’ll never sell
It's kind of like the Mini Cooper. Really interesting history, although the newer models are just cutesy shapes for teenage girls to drive about in. They've lost their history. Clearly Clarkson didn't realize that this vehicle would soon be plastered in lipstick and Barbie stickers. Shame, it could've been something.
@@Sciron In perect tune when your motor was fresh you might have had 50hp. Maybe there is a dead rat stuck in your intake, because it should easily do 50 up a slight incline.
I bought a banged up but running 2001 New Beetle about 3 months ago and I immediately started working on it. I'm not an auto mechanic, I am a household service plumber...but almost every thing that this car needed to be repaired was done by me and I am a novice mechanic at best. The car was bought as a "running" restoration project and I am already done under the hood and now I am starting the body work. I'm 41 years old, I'm just a novice mechanic, and this has been the easiest car I have ever tried to work on, ever. Also...even though it is just a little banged up with some scratches, we constantly get "thumbs up" from drivers and daily compliments on our half "electric" green, half gecko green 2.0L (only 115 hp) New Beetle. Mine (my girlfriend's) runs great although we bought it with many problems for a mere $1,600. After the body work/paint job is done...plus the engine improvements (performance chip, cold air intake, and some exhaust improvements are done) which should take my total investment to around $4,500 (at the most), I fully expect to have a car with close to 200 hp and getting around 30-35 mpg minimum from it. That's not too bad considering that me, a novice mechanic, can do all of the work needed (except for the paint). It was an iffy restoration project at day 1, but after I saw that I could do most all of the work by myself, I fully expect to be getting even more "thumbs ups" from others as I can drive it NOWHERE now without being constantly complimented on the car especially after they see how the indoor creations that are predominantly "zebra striped". Having a friend giving me a new gecko green paint job for $450 does help me out a lot, I admit... The car may be hard to work on for you...but it seems to me that VW put almost everything in the best places possible considering that the engine bay is so small. A used beetle with no major engine problems is definitely worth a second look...especially if you can and want to do the work yourself, which is nowhere near as hard as some people seem to say.
He must have been in some kind of a trance, or being paid by VW, as this is a joke of a car. It's a Golf with an American Football kit on and is simply a fashion item for girls. Amazed he tried to give it credibility.
Kiinell i like this one and i'm not a girl. I'm sorry the old one was great and all but this one is cute! and it has more equipment. and that hedious engine that barely produced any power is no more.
I have a 2000 and a 2004 cab both 2L Cab is auto with sport and tiptronic transmission tin top is manual. love them both best cars I've ever driven and once you go beetle you rarely go back!
Well then that being said, my 01 beetle is a 1.8t, it is built with some nice mods. Easy to maintain if you know anything about NA cars. It's a manual because auto trannies are for girly drivers in my opinion. I eat V8's all the time. Consider it a hobby to challenge bigger cars on the roadway. Damn fun to drive! I'd sell my soul for the 4motion version. Also I'm a ginger, and a girl. Carry on!
My mother actually named her cat by Eva after Hitlers wife. Many people tried to kill our cats (not because of the name but because they are evil) Hitler really hated people but he liked animals. My friend said to me that "I wish Hitler comes back" when I told how my neighbours are like. I didn't even mention the cat part xD but I told that they took my Volkswagen in the scrap yard. Had to pay 300 euros to get it back and couldn't get it in home because they were gonna put it back -.- had to give my car away and didn't get a penny, or cent.. P.S I had Vento not beetle. Vento is actually pretty good car but i was power sliding it too much and had to repair some parts and when I got kicked out from the work from going there too late I lost my car because gas was high due to the fact that Obama didn't give a fuck. I don't even live in America but their president affects my life. I don't even have to read newspapers and I see the effect with my own eyes in 2 weeks everytime when they do something stupid to the world. Btw I always thought that Hitler is TABU in Britain?? O_o
