@@bessarion1771 another fun fact: Kelly McGillis and Wolfman were in a real romantic relationship during the filming of Top Gun, in fact, there is footage of them together in home videos that Val Kilmer took on set during breaks, which you can see in his movie VAL on Netflix. *My father was stationed on the USS Ranger (CV-61) when they filmed the scene, in the Admiral's Quarters, where Cougar turned in his wings and the Captain told Mav & Goose they were going to Top Gun. My father was the only one with the key to that room, that day, so they wouldn't have been able to film that scene without him. He retired, CWO4, off the Ranger in 1987* 😁 *Oh yea! They offered him to be an extra, but he declined. My sisters and I still haven't forgiven him. lol When we all went to the Seattle premier, he was pointing out all his friends. There were a few things off, but it was defiantly much more realistic than this one was ("Mavrick" would have been forced to retire as a Capt. years earlier and after ticking off 2 flag officer's his career defiantly would have ended)

@@CDRhammond LOL. that's hilarious. There were dozens of inaccuracies in the original Top Gun, starting with the video game "HUD" that did not look ANYTHING like a real one, not to mention the idiotic "inverted dive" (completely impossible), not to mention several offences punishable by death and the fact there was no Mig 28. And, in fact, Maverick NOT retiring after ticking off 2 flag officers (while being shielded by ADMIRAL Kazansky) is technically possible, but unlikely. It simply shows you have no clue what you are talking about.

In the sequel that just came out, the shots are filmed from inside actual planes and the fighters had to go through their own flight school to pull off the stunts. Yeah. Tom Cruise is a an actual pilot but at the time in 1985-86, all the cockpit scenes with the actors were filmed on a stage in front of green screen. For the new sequel movie, they filmed all the flying scenes for real but only Navy pilots flew the actual planes with the actors performing. No one would ever trust actors to actually fly 80M dollar fighter jets funded by taxpayers, not even someone like Tom. But Tom actually did fly his personal jet for the sequel so all that footage of him and Jennifer Connelly in the plane with him piloting is real.

25:08 long story short (as short as possible, anyway lol): the exhaust ('jet wash') from Iceman's aircraft disrupted airflow into the intake of Maverick's aircraft, causing his engines to stall & flame out, putting them into a flat spin. The inertia from the spin kept Maverick from reaching the ejection handle ("I'm pinned forward, Goose.."), so Goose had to initiate ejection from the aircraft. Unfortunately, the glass canopy didn't clear, so the loud 'bang' you heard is Goose's head slamming into it. He died from either severe brain trauma or a broken neck.
@BPhillips2000
@BPhillips2000 2 года назад
Whether this could happen in real life to an actual aviator? I don't know, I'm not a pilot. But that's how it was explained to me.
@MrHws5mp
@MrHws5mp 2 года назад
@@BPhillips2000 There were several flat spin accidents like this in real life. The early F-14's TF-30 engines were notoriously twitchy, and the wide spacing between them caused exactly that accident if one quit before the other. AFAIK there was never a pilot-hitting-the-canopy incident, but it's credible because in a flat spin, there wouldn't be the clean forward airflow to pull the canopy backwards, so it could 'hang around' in the turbulence above the aircraft.
@pogo1140
@pogo1140 2 года назад
@@BPhillips2000 1st one with the F-14 was with one of the early jets out at Pax River. the RIO got injured when he hit the canopy rail. They changed the ejection procedure to Step 1. jettison canopy, wait, Step 2 eject RIO, then Pilot, this gave RIO time to make sure the canopy was not in the way of his ejection seat.

These men and the men working the flat tops are doing the most dangerous job in the world (for the good guys). Shout out😎 4. Tom Skerritt/Viper not only played Dallas in "Alien" he also played Strawberry in "Up in Smoke" with Cheech and Chong. 6. Val Kilmer/Iceman has a long list of movies including but not limited to: "Willow", "The Doors" and "Tombstone" 7. The officer(Goose) is the RIO (Radar Intercept Officer) radar, communications and navigation. 8. Onboard the ship the Squadron leader would not be smoking a cigar in that operation space. 9. Meg Ryan is my honey. A great overlooked movie with her is with Tom Hanks called "Joe vs the Volcano' She plays 3 parts. HINT HINT 10. Onboard the ship/aircraft all the perspiration is Hollywood(not the pilot). There is AC onboard. 11. The TOP GUN school is no longer located at Miramar near San Diego. It's now at NAS Fallon, NV. 12. In 1991 I was stationed on the USS INDEPENDENCE (CV-62) and they made a movie onboard called "Flight of the Intruder". It was seriously cool. Brad Johnson, Willem DeFoe and Danny Glover. I saw this as a young kid and it has always stuck with me. The movie has compelling action, the superb music (the 80s nailed the movie soundtracks and Top Gun is one of the best), a complicate character in Maverick and a love story, a real loss when Goose dies. Like I dont know how you cant shed a tear when that part takes places. Watching the jets fly is amazing, I can only imagine what it is like up there flying that fast and trying to fight other jets. I heard with this movie and Top Gun 2 most of the flight is done with real Navy planes and pilots with the actors typically in the back seat and since Tom Cruise is so big on doing his own stunts and flying he got the other actors for the second movie to really embrace getting in the jets. Pretty cool. On a side note when Obama was visiting Seattle there was an air space alter as a sea plane entered restricted air space and Air Force One was at Boeing field, so they scrambled 2 jets out of Portland and you could hear their sonic bomb when went supersonic near the Seattle area. It was crazy.

Tom Cruise owns a P-51 Mustang, a WW2 fighter plane and they use it in the new "Top Gun: Maverick" movie which he does fly in that movie. All of the actors are flown and act in real jets using multiple camera angles. However, the US Gov't did not allow Tom Cruise or other actors to fly them, they sat in the rear seats and act from there. Amazingly, acting with real G forces being applied to them. Tom Cruise does 90% of his own stunts to include motorcycle riding and he piloted a helicopter that he learned to fly in less than a year for stunt work in his latest Mission Impossible movie. He is probably, the most serious actor when it comes to learning something that his movie needs. He hates doing green screen when it can be done in real life.

You are talking about the new Top Gun movie Ellie. Tom Cruise is a pilot now, he wasn't back when this original Top Gun movie was made. He can't fly an F/A-18, the fighter he is shown to fly in the new movie. He isn't trained on it. Only military pilots fly military planes. He did want to take the controls while supervised by a pilot, which he could have easily handled, but the US Navy wouldn't have it (rightly so). Don't worry Michelle, there were plenty of shit movies in the 80s and 90s, you are just watching the ones that have stood the test of time. Saying that, it seems like there was always another great movie coming out back then, and you could generally be confident it wasn't going to disappoint.

I say this in alot of top gun reactions: Tom Cruise had a line after Charlie says " i have fallen for you" but he fumbled and he just went in for the kiss. The director loved the real reaction from both that he kept it in the film

I saw this film a lot of times. For the courtroom scene, Iceman was the one to cause the death of Goose. He did it on purpose to prevent Maverick from getting enough points to out lead him to get the Top Gun Trophy.

In real life, they have sun visors that don't help completely but help a lot when it's sunny. They're like dark sunglasses, and are inside the helmets (just have to pull them down). In movies, only the bad guys use sun visors, because the audience needs to see the faces of the actors. This is also why they keep taking off their masks. They can, because the cockpits have air pressure, but in real life they would not do this often, because while maneuvering they might need more oxygen than normal. But we need to see their faces, so they take off their masks a lot.

What you were trying to say was that Maverick's 'buzzing' of the tower (after a success or win) was his 'trademark'! And yeah, some of the best movies ever made came out in the 80s and early 90s ... so _many_ *great* ones! It was great watching you enjoy one of my favorite movies. It was one of the first movies I bought on DVD! But there were some real GOATs back in the early days of Hollywood. I can *enthusiastically* recommend the old B&W movie from 1941 _"Casablanca"_ ... it's truly a *great* suspense/romance/drama and stars Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman! It's set at the start of WW2, and you watch as all sorts of tricky/shady things happen. You'll fall in love with it! Another GOAT (not B&W, it's in color) is _"Rear Window"_ (1954) ... which was an *amazing* suspense/murder-mystery starring Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly. One of Alfred Hitchcock's _truly_ *great* movies! (Personally, I think it was better than his _"Psycho"_ or _"Vertigo"_ movies, although they were definitely also great!). One of the amazing things about it is that almost the whole movie takes place in one apartment; you watch the two main characters try to figure out what's happening with the neighbors! Try some of the old classic B&W movies ... I think you'll be surprised at how _very_ *good* (even great!) they really are! *Enjoy!*

"Charlie" was doing her job, yes, but as she said, she was also holding back some praise she might have given him and that she genuinely felt he deserved. She feared it would have been controversial enough to make people think that she had fallen for him, and of course she had, so she kept her mouth shut and criticized his victory as a bad example only. So she wasn't being completely honest in doing her job, and their relationship caused her to go against him when she otherwise might not have done so. If he had been willing to listen to her admit this to him earlier, then he wouldn't have gotten so mad, but he was already mad enough not to listen to her.

He is a civilian pilot that is true and actually owns a P-51 mustang which was a fighter aircraft back in WW2 (Its featured in TOPGUN: Mavrick) but he is not a USN officer or a USN Aviator in real life and there for not qualified of the F/A-18F. Every actor did sit in the back seat though and experienced actual flight in the hornet. The fact that Tom Cruise at nearly 60 was making something I did in my 20's and 30's look like a piece of cake kinda annoyed me LOL. Trust me it is not an easy thing to pull the kind of G's they went through to film the second movie.

We know that scene with Maverick throwing Goose's dog tags away (burying them at sea) to symbolize that he can finally move past that unfortunate part of his life won't hold up, though. How do we know? Because 36 years later there is a sequel now, so obviously Maverick did not really get past it. I don't mean that he ever has to forget his best friend, but he has to let him go--let him rest in peace and take Maverick's "demons" away. Looks like the demons are still there.

After seeing part II and watching some pilot reactions they say that there are pilots, regardless of rank, that can out fly pretty much everyone around them. Very cool, fun reaction! 👍✌❤

Actually Fighter Weapons School “TopGun” is in Fallon, Nevada these days. It was moved there in 1996. The Marines took over Miramar. Now known MCAS Miramar. The new movie has aerial shots of both Fallon and Coronado, CA. Rear projection was used in the original, while they sat in simulators. In the sequel. The actors sat in the back seat of the F/A18F Super Hornets. All went through pretty much the same training as the actual pilots.
