I understand the point of this video and I appreciate it. Here’s my opinion: I bought my gucci marmont bag because I absolutely love it and I couldn’t care less about the resale value cause it’s what suits my style and taste. I found myself wanting to wear it all the time. This never happened to me with any other luxury handbag until i met this beauty.
I agree with you. I buy a handbag because I want it, I love it - face it, it’s not a need to have that of expensive. However, I buy accordingly to WHAT I want and when I want it. Even if it’s popular I’m choosing what is me not out of popularity. A handbag is very personal, it must be me. Another way to look at it is how we wear it and take care of it. Some handbags may have value in the future but it must be in a good condition. I would never want to pay thousands of dollars for a pre loved and have some imperfections that I couldn’t bear. I’m not against pre loved, I buy them but I pay for the best condition possible. As for the Hermès Kelly and Birkin styles are not my taste. It seems that older boring people wear them, most of which think that are rich or wanna be rich or maybe rich (that’s not a preference it’s a choice) to buy a Hermès. Not because it’s so expensive or it’s hard to even buy one, it should be because you want it, you LOVE it. Today, woman wear handbags more because they are trying to please other females. Liman Neeson once said “A woman wearing a $20k dress and another one wearing a $100 dollar dress could look more & most attractive because it’s the way she wears it ~
Lessons: - Never trust Instagram popularity. - You can't retire on bags. Investments are investments, bags are not. - What's the point of buying the perfect resellable Chanel flap / birkin/Kelly if you can't wear and enjoy it out of fear or because you don't like it? - Don't buy the brand. Buy quality + classic/functional shapes = last forever. You'd be surprised many quality issues some high priced brands, including Chanel, have.
Yep, I cringe when I hear people describe luxury bags as “investments”. If it doesn’t make you profit, it’s not a legitimate investment. These bags are marked waaaay up for the name. The quality does not match the price for the most part.
Agree with everything, except for Chanel Boy. I've been lusting for it for the last 5 years, and even though my style changed for a couple of times,I still find Boy design extremely versatile. In my opinion it's like a more masculine and edgy version of Flap and there are always gonna be people that will prefer this style over classic, feminine Flap. But great video, thank you 💕
Jane Stoller anyway bags aren’t financial investment, it can be investment in your wardrobe but not more than that . If you’re really interested in investments then invest in stocks, shares and real estate 😅
I have the Gucci Marmont in natural and I love it, I think it will be the new Gucci classic especially with influencers wearing it like crazy more and more. Even clothing brands repost photos with girls wearing it and I think that’s imprinting on the industry. We’ll see!
Unpopular opinion here, but whatever happened to buying things you truly like? I understand many times in life, we need to make smart financial decisions, but buying a jacket/jewelry/bag should be something that you love, not because it holds value so you can sell it later on.
TeenaNikole she specifically said that is the most important thing, this video is just about ”superb resale value”... Some people do buy chanel because it's a true financial investment if you take care of it, its like a house
Loving an item now doesn’t mean you will love it in future. People move on, lifestyle changes so considering resale value is an added bonus. If you don’t need that extra security feeling then maybe this video is not for you ;-)
Same! I switched them out every other day, dust them off, store them perfectly, and enjoy the heck out of them. If, and when I do want to retire them, I will hand them to my nieces and grand nieces. I’ve never purchased a second hand bag and I’ve realized some of them are so ridiculously priced.
I just bought the medium classic flap in black with gold hardware. I’ve been SUPER regretful about it this whole week, because I originally wanted the same boy bag that you showed. They didn’t have it, so I went with the flap. I keep telling myself I should’ve just waited for a restock...but I’m glad you uploaded this video in time! I’m feeling much better about my flap!
I sold my Marmmont camera bag, thinking that if I waited another year, I would lose all value invested. The Bag is Beautiful, mine was in red color. ♥️ Now I am considering investing more, and get a Chanel Mini Flap, timeless piece
I think CHANEL Boy it will hold value very well. It’s beautiful bag, very versatile. If they will stop selling I think it’s going to be same as with mini bags on pre loved market. Mini bags are huge and crazy expensive.
I think she’s thinking about long term, I think in 10 years boy will lose popularity and no one would want them at all anymore. There will be a trendier style to replace the edgy crossbody
this video was super helpful! as someone who likes to get a great deal on gently used bags, but doesn't really plan to resell, i took this as a "bags to look out for on the resale market (at a decent price)" video!
I find that Gucci in general has no resale value at all. Probably because it’s on the more affordable side? And I agree with the LV points. Except for the Neverfull, best buy it preloved.
That Gucci M is flooded on the resale market and not a good investment so I hope she bought it bc she loves it. Otherwise you can get it deeply discounted today.
Totally agree with you.... I would never pay full price for LV leather bags. To me LV is just worth paying at the canvas price level .. and yes all other Brands are purely ‘buy it since you love it just don’t mind the resell value’ xoxoxo
The Speedy? Mono speedys go really cheap -- the resale market is flooded with them. Mine had patina, but otherwise was in excellent condition and I got it for $300. Even ones that look brand new I see going for $500 - $600. Speedy B's do well, though. Great video.
OMG Amie, this video was so informative. I love how you analyze things in terms of shape, it bags, and classic bags. I also liked your disclaimer in the beginning about buying the bag you love as opposed to having a resale value in mind all the time. Great video. Xoxo...
Just bought a vintage seasonal Chanel purse solely because I liked it. But...what do I know? I’m an old lady who still has her alligator purse from the 1960’s.
Great informative video. So agree with you. I don’t have resell value in mind when I buy bags, I strictly buy what I like, but there are times when I realize that I have too many top handle bags (i.e. LV Speedy), decide to sell and recoup my money. I think the only bag (that made this list) I wish I hadn’t gotten was my Marmont camera bag; it’s just not held up for me in terms of wear but it’s functionality is great as it is a crossbody.
Please women, stop saying buying a luxury handbag is an investment. It is NOT. You want the handbag then go buy it! You don’t need to justify your life choices to anyone but to yourself. A handbag like a car or any other similar item is not an asset. This piece of unsolicited advice comes from somebody who owns a large luxury handbag collection because I love them not because of investment ;-)
Yes, I did it and I m now reseller on Vestiaire Collective in Chanel classics bag. Is really good investment. Seriously business. After 5 minutes post the bag I sold the bag. There are only Happen with Chanel bag and the next in good investment is Louis Vuitton in model speedy, Trocadero, small mini bags, Pochette... and other bag like as lady Dior, Saddle... are in trendy and hot so easy to resell it too. Even the vintage bag in years 1999 in good condition u can resell with high prices like as currently prices. But is not easy to buy it in great prices for reselling. And I have more more experiences in reselling and enjoy my work now in every week to find cool bags
This one is probably not in your category, but LV x Supreme collection has a really good resell value. It's actually way too expensive to purchase now.
Very informative video. The Chanel GST was discontinued a few years ago but is holding its re-sale very well. I guess that's the tote shape and Chanel brand kicking in.
Yes. It's true, must thinking on resale value in the future. But if you just have that amount money and must buy a bag really really you love and keep as a personal collection. Don't sell it. in future the price will increase, if you want buy a new one for the same bag . Specially Chanel, Hermes, Dior , etc.
You did bring out good information. I watched another video and that person says Gucci is not grand, they would not be great classics. I happen to adore them just how they look and feel. The only Chanel I love and want is the Classic Flap but it’s at the back of my list.
I think many times people buy what they want and like. The Chanel boy is still a very popular handbag even though MOST people prefer the classic flap. The boy has proven to consistently hold its value. I have both the boy and classic but prefer the boy as it fits my lifestyle better, which is super casual. People should buy a bag for what it is...to carry it as an accessory. A bag is not and should not ever be bought as an investment or something that holds value. You can’t even insure bags. Invest in art or weapons and buy bags to carry for pleasure.
The best thing about contemporary bags is that you can have 10 of them, different shapes and colors, without going bankrupt. No need to worry about resell value or scratches, and most of them are actually really good quality, even compared to luxury bags. You can find classic shapes, and wear them for years. One good example is the mini mac: really handy, I think it still looks edgy and still being sold, so I don't feel like I'm old- fashioned wearing one. I'd actually be terrified and a bit embarassed wearing a 5k Chanel: it's like screaming "look at me, I can afford a Chanel" haha. I can't, and won't save up for ages just to pretend otherwise. Should I ever buy one, it would be because I'd have money to throw around, AND I wouldn't feel the need to baby the bag. Which will probably never happen, and as I already have a good collection and variety of the contemporary ones, I'm all good :) Having said that, I do enjoy watching videos of the collections, unboxings and reviews, and I like this channel: very classy, informative and relaxing :)
One thing I think you missed is lifestyle and wear. I think a lot of people are looking at folks on RU-vid and Instagram who have extensive handbag collections. They switch out their bags on the regular and any particular bag may not even get a few weeks worth of use per year in total. Chances are if you’re a normal person saving up for that one bag and you carry it everyday or even every weekend, the wear you put on it is probably going to decrease the value, especially if you’re a busy person and can’t treat your bag like a newborn baby. I see so many wear tests by people who hardly use their bags and live the most luxurious lifestyles.
I agree with your list, I try to only buy bags I really love & that fit my lifestyle. With the exception of Chanel Classic flaps & leather totes, Hermes Birkin & Kelly all the others can be bought much cheaper preloved, so that’s the route I take. Love your classy videos, very informative. 🙏🏽❤️
Very good video and points. Right now, I buy a lot of contemporary bags since they are more affordable such as the Rebecca Minkoff bags, but I usually buy them always on sale. Recently bought my first Gucci bag which was a WOC that was pre-loved, plus a mint condition Gucci wallet. Thank you for this video for those who are newer to luxury bags and are considering luxury bags in the future. 💕
Very enjoyable video! I consider resale value when I buy, but I usually buy to keep. I’m not super rich to not worry about the money, but I do get very attached, and will have a hard time letting go. So even if I buy a seasonal bag, i try to keep the overall shape and texture close to classic, or something they might make again later. I try to not buy too crazy or too trendy or too weird (unless I absolutely love it and don’t care). I find that luxury brands like Chanel for example re-release certain fabrics, leathers and color in a close style to my “old” bag, and that my bag won’t look “that” old! It might even look like it is another color of a current bag!
I love this video. You are totally right about not many purses being true classics. My favorite bag is the Celine box bag. I wish you would purchase it and talk about it on your channel. So many bags have chain straps and with the exception of channel, seems like a huge trend. How do you feel about all your chain purses? Do get sick of all the purses on chains and find them annoying sometimes? Do those purses hold up better than leather straps or is it just more of a bling look?
Thanks for your thoughts. Should I keep my limited edition rectangle mini in black lambskin in my collection? It’s from the 2014 runway/supermarket collection!
Just picked up the large Deauville tote. It is almost sold out in the US. My SA tells me that she thinks Chanel will be adding it to their classic line up since they no longer have the GST. She sees it being released season after season. Great topic and as always a wonderful job!
I’m 100% agree with you. I also want to add one more point is beside Hermès Birkin, Kelly , the color bags also don’t hold value than natural color. I’m thinking to sell my Chanel boy bag too, I don’t foresee this bag will last another 10 years. Awesome video. Love it❤️
Gucci marmont is still selling for around $700 - 1200 pre owned on ebay and its def still selling, I just almost bought one lol. $700 isn’t terrible but also not amazing either I guess. I ended up getting the loulou YSL puff for 1/3rd of retail in almost new condition. Not sure if it’ll still be in style in five years but I love it and I got a great deal and according to you that’s the goal! 👌🏼
Wonderful informative video. I'm a classic girl and I love that you shared this information with use. First thing I got from this is JUST WHAT YOU said. Buy what you like, HOWEVER, IF you are someone who decide to purchase a bag that is not a classic, expect to loose money if you choose to sell. EVERYONE here is NOT on the same level of finances or even know one bag from the other but this video will be VERY helpful. Second thing I learned is, cost per wear will determine as to whether it will be a great investment or a really bad investment. Final thing is, if there is a bag you like and it's not a classic but trendy or a NOT It bag or it bag if you are like me and have to save for a bag, it's great to wait and purchase the bag on the pre-loved market for a cheaper price. There is always more to get from a video, therefore, I APPRECIATE you Aimee for sharing this video. Placing this one in a YT folder. TFS 💕
Imo another example of a trendy bag that was only popular for a short period of time is the Celine luggage bag that was all over the place a few years ago. Many people considered that bag a staple but I don’t really see people wearing it anymore.
Great video Amie! Very informative! I have a question, would you consider the Alma bb a Louis Vuitton classic? And what do you predict the resell value would be 5-10 years from now? Thank you 😍
I love your videos! Would you mind making a video on tips for selling bags?? I’m thinking about selling a LV bag that I have and have no idea how to go about doing so, like what sites are best, how to determine how much to sell it for without losing a significant amount of money, etc. I appreciate if you could!
I totally agree with all your points here 💖 thanks for making this video, it’s really useful info to have out there! Also I think the Gucci marmont bag has become your signature now I just love the way you style it always!
I am in love with the limited Chanel Boy with Top Handle. Looking into your crystal ball, what do you think the long term value retention is going to be?
I have done the buying and selling before an IT bag lost its appeal - I have actually made money in many cases because I bought on sale and then sold in time at a better price
If a bag is discontinued, don’t you think the price should go up because people who couldn’t get it would be ready to give any amount to buy it off of someone who’s ready to sell it.
I agree with your “it bags” category soooo much. An example for me is the Celine luggage tote. How I feel about it fits the it bag idea. I used to be really obsessed about it and now I’m not.
Caluxy L That’s a bag I consider “it bag” which is now quite dated, too, but I love mine so much and I’m so glad I got mine pre-loved at an excellent condition with great price, too. Buy bag because you really love it. Not just because you like and obsess with it. (Happen to me too often and so hard to distinguish. 😅😅😅)
The ugly truth about high designer luxury goods and "needing" to save for it means that you're overreaching to buy into a status you have not achieved yet. For most young women, having to think about resell value as one of the considerations for buying it really means you can't afford it. When they don't own a home, nice car, have retirement investment or have a good amount of savings. You can buy whatever you like with your money but buying into the marketing scheme is not a smart move financially. I'm not speaking about Amie, I'm referring to many young women nowadays who are not established financially but have to save their hard earn money to buy a high luxury bag so they can look a certain way.
I don’t have one but I love it so much I would shell out full price to get the exact one I want. I notice that the ones on the used market for a great price are mainly the colors, not classic black.
so im between buying a simple prada leather bag or a prada leather bucket bag, or the YSL camera bag in crocodile embossed leather. Waht do you guys think is should get?
Such an informative video! Thank you for sharing your tips and options. I’ve had my eye on the Chloe Tess bag but it is definitely an “it” bag. Will I still like the style in 10 years? Hard to say. Love your videos as always!
Enjoyed your video .. when I buy high end bags I buy because I luv it ... I don’t like it I must luv it .. esp if I’m spending over $5k & up .. & never as investments ever but I do buy bags that are limited editions preferred.. it’s been 10 years since I’ve bought a LV bag & using my bags I’ve had 20 years ago & still goin strong .. & if not it’s trash ... ty for sharing your video.. 😊. Luving your collection 😊
Can confirm the rebecca minkoff -_- i bought one on sale and ended up selling it for half that again. I didnt buy it for re-sale but when i did eventually sell it, it took about 8 months to get rid of it.
I think LV is the SMARTEST!!!!! They hold their value like GOLD and more!!!!! I bought the neverfull in 2012 from holt renfrew for 799$ and now in 2020: it's sold at $1800!!!!!!! Also LV canvas are DAMAGEPROOF. I throw mine around and I SWEAR IT LOOKS BETTER AND BETTER WITH AGE.
I own a watercolor speedy and love it so much. Definitely holds its value, my allergist doctor really tried hard to persuade me into selling it to him for his wife lol. I don’t think I could ever part with it, it was my dream bag and I’m so happy I finally own one.
The laws of supply and demand completely contradict her statement that inaccessibility and visibility within stores will decrease supply and thus demand. The law states that decrease in supply will actually increase demand as they move in opposite directions and therefore increase the equilibrium point a.k.a price. Therefore, the resale value should in fact increase if supply decreases. Perhaps the luxury handbag market is an exception, but it seems strange that it goes against one of the main principles of economics.
Dooney & Bourke has a trade-in program, so though of course it's not the full value of the bag, you do get to recoup some of what you paid towards another new bag from them.
I agree with you on the Neverfull and would even add a lot of the current canvas pieces at LV being better to buy new because the difference in price isn’t enough to buy preloved. Especially if u get the VAT back and purchase them in Europe!
I would think so, eventhough the bags are beautiful. I would compare it to Furla bags. Plus the cost is definitely cheaper than luxury brands. The Polene numero un in burgundy is gorgeous. I ordered it 3 days ago.
That's why i buy pre-owned marmont, still in perfect condition but half the price. Marmont is gorgeous in every way, just because it's more affordable than hermes kelly doesn't make it less a taste in my opinion.
Hi amie! I really like your videos and i value your input as a fairly new collector of luxury bags. I’m curious though why you don’t seem to have any Hermes bags... care to share why? Also, what do you think about Céline bags such as the nano/micro luggage and the Balenciaga City bags?
Hi amie, i would reli wanna know your thoughts on the old celine designs, what do u think will happen to them after the new designs are fully out with the possibility of discontinuing the old designs?
Hi! You always make super helpful videos about buying stuff but I would love to hear your advice when it comes to selling items like bags. Best place to sell, how protect yourself, etc.
I think the price of a chanel mini is ridiculous - it is so small it is not worth the price just because it is Chanel - plus I have heard very small bags will soon be out - So if you like a mini buy because you like it not for investment. Even a classic chanel is not really an investment unless you hold on to it for 10 or 15 years and there has been many increases( which is no guarantee they will keep going up) and the bag has to be in almost new condition. It is a hassle to sell bags unless you are a popular you tuber and can post on your channel.
Hi Amie! Great video (: I was wondering what you think of the Celine belt bag and lv SLGs. Do you think they tend to hold their value? The Celine belt bag has been out for a few years and I’m thinking of getting it, but I don’t want something that will look out of date in 5 years or so. Thanks!
I believe the only Louis Vuitton leather style that could hold its value or perhaps be an investment is the Petite Malle; however, that is heavily determined on how much LV decides to produce in the seasons to come.
Very informative! Can you do a video on BOYY bags? This is a brand that I'm sure a lot of people are not familiar with, but has been sneaking here and there on everyone's IT fashion choice.
Hi Amie, first time commenting here, i have been debating about whether to get a Chanel mini or a Hermes Garden Party for the longest time. Would love to know your comments/opinions of them!
So I actually looked at the Garden Party myself but what put me off was the fact that it is quite a plain looking bag for what is a lot of money! I obviously do own the Chanel mini though and can say that I absolutely love the style (and it's great for resale value too :))
H Evelyne, Garden Party, Bolide are classics that have great resale value but not like B and K for sure. Halzan is also doing great right now at least. LV is atrocious with their leather bags and their ongoing discontinuation policy puts me off buying from them
Amy, what do you think of the WOC? I have a boy WOC as seen in Coco Mademoiselle commercial with Keira Knightley. I wonder if the only reason I got it was that commercial.
