Iowa Senator Tom Harkin is withdrawing from the race for the Democratic nomination. Harkin was an old line liberal who got in as a prairie Populist with strong labor union connections. Political analyst Michael Barone referred to his liberal message antique and out of date.
On the Democratic campaign trail, former Massachusetts Senator Paul Tsongas was in the south campaigning. Today he was in Nashville picking up an endorsement of a pastor of a Black church in Nashville. Tsongas says his economic message is not in line with more liberal side of the Democratic Party.
President Bush is still contending with his challenger Pat Buchanan. Bush says he is campaigning with dignity but is dogged by giving up his 1988 "Read my lips. No new taxes" pledge.
