Just picked up some ultramarine upgrade sprues, god it was depressing opening the mail and truly seeing how little you get, especially in New Zealand with the additional "you're along way away so tough" markups.
There's also the £/hr of hobby enjoyment to consider. You could have a £60 model that produces 10 hours of enjoyment because it's nice to put together & paint & a £50 model produces 5 hours of enjoyment & 5 hours of frustration/just get it done because it's too fanikity/detailed.
The Reaver Titan used to cost around $750-850 US Dollars. I bought one after saving all summer. It went up to $1,420 USD overnight after GW made it's US forgeworld branch in 2018.
Forge world: It’s expensive, sometimes just looks bad, AND it’s getting phased out of 40K for the most part. If you are intending to get forge world models to play with them, do not be surprised if they are removed extremely quickly. I made the mistake of buying a Dimachaeron when they were insane in 9th, please do not be a meta chasing dumbass like I was.
@@SnowFoxWithAGasMask True, but if I am going to kitbash stuff, then there is literally no point in buying this expensive, heavy garbage. Addendum - also made of toxic, terrible, will melt under room temperature on a hot day resin. What's not to like?
@@SnowFoxWithAGasMask They are being hyperbolic. Some resin is very toxic. GW resin is less toxic than 3d printing resin, but people breathing in resin dust are stupid, but then so are people breathing in plastic dust. GW resin doesn't melt at room temp unless you live in a desert and use your window as a magnifying lens to heat the model to about 50c.
On the topic of Smaug I would just like to mention that you CAN run him in your armies in Middle Earth. But to be more precise... when you pick him he IS YOUR ARMY. Quite literally a one model army. It doesn't get much cooler than that!
Space Marine player when confronted with the fact he's always just been a Space Marine player that got buttered up by GW with super special boy rules, lol.
As a Drukhari player, I find it hilarious that a box set worth less than $40 (Scourges) is able to viably wound EVERYTHING ASIDE FROM THE WARLORD on a 4+ or better and do decent damage comparatively (Heat Rays)
By rough count, there is around 18,000 serial numbered versions on the forums of JUST the imperial and chaos Titan walkers. You have to remember warhammer isn’t just played by the average blue collar guy. It’s also played by people to whom £1000 isn’t an issue to spend in a month or two.
@@SenseiLlama you'll be surprised at how costly ANY hobbies can get when you want to go to top of the line, that only adults who have money to spare can afford it...
@@SenseiLlama I mean this is the top end. Timmy the 14 year old won’t be able to buy the massive Titan. But you do see younger people in regular 40K, especially on the competitive side. But it is at the end of the day a modelling hobby. Tends to be old people game
The price of the Mastodon is what is going to make me get a 3d printer. For that price, I could just buy a printer and supplies, print the Mastodon and still have money to spare.
And still have that setup to print other ridiculously priced stuff or print other fun projects. Conclusion: a 3D printer bought for wargamming pays for itself and then some. ;)
Man, I really hope we get a full-plastic or smaller version of a mastodon in 40k. (Please don't let the guy who sculpt coteaz and primaris blood angels anywhere near it).
Meanwhile a perfect grade gundam is a foot tall, fully articulated, has LEDs and costs a couple of hundred bucks. Glad my friend Zack in China can hook me up with much cheaper OOP versions of FW models. Someone has to keep Warhammer history alive
The answer is... none of them! Because the secondhand market is the only place I'm buying minis from now on. I literally can't justify giving GW any money at this point. They either cut models, or whole armies, or make Ultramarines with upgrade sprues. And anything that _does_ survive the purge comes out looking good, but going straight to Legends (T'au Invocation of the Elements and Votann Ancestors' Wrath comes to mind) or comes out looking like the new Sanguinary Guard...
Buying them used makes them Veterans due to their experience. :P And I'm right with you: I've been buying used models for years. It's worth the effort to strip and rebuild them, and by the time they're done you really can't tell the difference.
@@The_Blackshield Same. 80% of my models at this point have been bought used. Sure, sometimes they're missing pieces, or need refurbishment, or stripping, but I'd rather spend half the money and give it directly to another person than any to GW right now.
Ebay, generally. But buy them when they're not being the centre of attention, if they're specific faction models. At the moment, Blood Angels are getting all the attention, so now is a good time to look at anything else. And as long as they're all, in my opinion that's ideal. Might need a bit of work to tidy up, but that's fine. It's so worth it.
I will say the Age of Darkness box is probably the cheapest way to start a Space Marine army. 1500 points right off the bat depending how you decide to run some of the models.
Well... I own two of these and am saving for a third. I personally love my thunderhawk and porphyrion, and the warlord titan is gonna be my biggest project ever
A myphitic blight hauler is only 18.50 compared to the bloat drone at double the price. The MBH is monopose and easy to build and the drone has a few options. But it’s funny that it’s a small vehicle and it’s cheaper than some of the HQs
The only reason I got into wargaming was the realization that I could take the $500 on one army and buy a solid 3d printer and print my own army for the same price. Then the next $500 I'd spend trying to keep that army competitive could just be sunk into printing off a dozen more instead.
Poor hammer actually did a video about that a few months or maybe a year or so ago. I remember guard and admech were in the top 5 most expensive with the least points per dollar. I forget who the most expensive was though
I don't know if you've done it already, but I think you should consider doing this type of video for regular GW plastic. Forgeworld stuff I feel like is completely overpriced (both in points and in monmey) on purpose.
The Forgeworld Imperial Fortress was a really cool model? Would that count as a model? I remember that FW made them to-order and it took a few months from purchase to get one. They were huge and a couple grand.
$315 or £195 why the hell is the price so different. £195 is $251.25. That still doesnt make sense to me. $975 or £630 for the phantom titan. £630 is $811. So its $164 more because im in America thats because of shipping costs to the US but then i have to pay even more for shipping. Someone please explain this to me. I know the £ is worth more than the $. Im not that good at math so maybe im thinking about this wrong
Nope. Gw has it's own currency change rates. If U do the same with Australian dollars the difference between real world change rates and GW change rate is insane.
@@necrometicsonofthelion I wonder if it's worth it to buy stuff using £ and having it shipped to the US or would it end up costing about he same? Have you heard anything about anyone trying this? If I end up saving $5 on each order over time I guess that might be worth it.
$500 for an army, or $450 for a good printer and $50 for the 3d models and materials to print your own. One of these makes the next army you build 1/10th the cost.
Forge world is generally the rule on this one, anything which needs to be straight; swords, handles, body plates, exhaust vents on warlord titans (Squidmar) and even wings come out a little squiffy.
Hard pass on all of them except the Thunderhawk gunship. Thats my dream model for my Black Templars collection. Much less to actually play, more to build/paint and just have sitting atop my glass case that my Black Templar collection sits in.
I've always hated the Warhound Titan. Without a doubt the dumbest design in all of 40k. The Reaver Titan is better, but still pretty janky looking. Nemesis and Warlord look decent, I'm guessing they're both far newer than the other two. But even if they made a new one now I'd still not like the Warhound. Now the Mastodon or the Stormbird? Yes please, I'd love those. I like how the Mastodon is designed to be able to link up with other ones to make a protected corridor for troops to advance in. Completely impractical for gameplay, but a neat bit of lore and design.
Getting rid of forgeworld is such a good move. Every time I hear news of a new set of forgeworld models being retired I know we’re that much closer to it all being a memory. I can’t wait
And a good part of Warhammer history lost. If they would at least bring them out in plastic before disposing them. Just look at all the Aeldari Flyers. I know of at least 3 that are I haven't heard of until I see a recast of them. Every old resin mini took love and care. Badab War and Siege or Vraks for example. Loosing them should be mourned.
Son & I play apocalypse once a month or so. Its the only time my reavers, warhounds and warlord titans see any action. Just too powerful for a normal game
I was kind of hoping this would have been about the worst points per money ratio for each army. Nothing wrong with big forge world models but it's pretty predictable, and not nearly as accessible for the common mini buyer. Perhaps in another video?
