Great list! I would only (maybe) add NIGHT OF THE COMET; I'll always have a soft spot for that one. The sisters are fabulous. Mary Warnov's death scene is dope. This posting's long; but it's me, so I hope it's worth it. And thanks for all the Goldsmith comments on the last thread, guys! It made me soooo happy... ;) I had a chance, years ago, to read Mark Protosevich's original screenplay to I AM LEGEND, back when Ridley Scott and Arnold Schwarzenegger were attached. In a nutshell, it was a very different animal than the version that ended up in Francis Lawrence's film with Will Smith. For one, it all took place in San Francisco. Substitute the destroyed landmarks for other destroyed landmarks. In Protosevich's original, the 'Hemocytes' were intelligent, like they were in OMEGA MAN, but they were actually being led (it eventually turned out) by one of Robert Neville's former students at the university he had taught medicine at; this student, who was still intelligent (just blood thirsty, I can sympathize) had majored in history. He had figured out that even though his early Hemocytes were violent and tribal creatures now, they would eventually be the dominant form on the planet, and would need a social order to replace the human one. He needed a myth to build it around. The quickest way to this end was to make Neville, the last remaining human, into the monster, and make slaying this Devil their life's mission. And it was working. This amazing element of the script was, of course, completely thrown out for the Will Smith film. I don't blame Francis Lawrence; he's taken enough risks in his career. Akiva Goldsman played it safe, it was an insane budget, rewriting the Hemocytes into dumb beasts, then hinting at 'nascent intelligence' in final reshoots. OMEGA MAN actually does a better job of this, but imagine it if Anthony Zerbe's character was matching Neville step by step the whole time. It was pretty cool when you began to grasp it. Anyways, the point of this screed is that NONE of this remains in Will Smith's version; a shame, since the work is, after all, called I AM LEGEND. Why? Because the world is upside down; human Neville is now the monster in the castle, and the poor vampires must live in fear that some bright day, any bright day, he... no, IT, might come calling for you and your loved ones with fire and sunlight! GODS! What a terrible thought. Oh... and... as much as I love the LANDMASTER, and I do, I cannot pretend that DAMNATION ALLEY is a great film. Your choice not to include it was... understandable.
@kallianpublico7517
@kallianpublico7517 7 месяцев назад
There was something strangely allegorical about Vincent Price's version. He was truly the last human. In Heston's version there were other humans. Recently saw "Rhinoceros" with Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel. This time I stayed and watched the end of the movie. Could never have before because it was so ...disconcerting, even anarchic. Compare Wilder's rant at the rest of the world at the end of Rhinoceros to Price's tragic end in The Last Man. What must it have been like to have been the last Neanderthal? The last horse cart in a world full of automobiles? The last star of silent films? A sad and tragic comment on "evolution"; or a screed against what may not have been inevitable? Not some epithet against the economy or populism, but a valorization of some moral code? What if it was a movie about the last Democrat, or the last Jew, or the last Atheist, or last scientist or last Christian, last American Indian? If it was about the last Nazi would it have the same effect? The last snake 🐍 man of Valusia? Strange how Robot Monster was by itself. There are aliens and then there is alienation. Ascetics and misanthropes. Can a society suddenly decide to pick a type of person to be the outcast, the leper? Can it happen today? Can it be done by the person himself/herself? Or done by some underhanded means like economic favoritism or the passing of some law? Adapt and survive or burn out and fade away? Conform or rebel? Hide?

I am going to see how deep your movie knowledge goes here. Are you aware of or have seen the post apocalyptic movie called Survivor? Stars Chip Meyer, one of the guys who replaced one of the Duke boys in Dukes of Hazzard and as the main villain, Richard Moll. Meyer plays an astronaut who was in orbit when nuclear war broke out and knocked the earth off its axis. When he returns the world is of course a wasteland. He ventures across the wastes, find a woman who is then kidnapped by Moll's people who is taken to an underground society that Moll has set up. Moll plans on repopulating the earth all with his seed thus his reasoning of going out and kidnapping women above ground. I originally found this on RU-vid is 10 minute segments and later off of ebay as a bootleg. I thought it was very good and the story is told in a unconventional way as Meyer's character at times conveys dialog through what his character is thinking in scenes.

A little 'snarky' there, my friend. GOOD! I luvs me some Chuck in... whatever. But true; both are wonderful entertainments in their own right. One American, one Italian. A good story is a good story. Until you pick Will Smith. Then it's just more CGI cr*p. Ro-Man is da' Man! Or gorilla -alien. And quite the lethario. I thought that the chick in that Bizarre Encounters was screaming because of the Perm she had gotten was no longer in style. I likes me some Adam Ant too, but I miss his antenna helmet and big A muscle shirt. Never accept imitations. Man! I gotta get on that Vampire Hunter D. Was it only in the 4:3 aspect ratio? Did it ever play in the cinemas or was it a Direct to Video release? And you probably picked up on it, but I noticed the now sadly diminished Nasqcah (I have to have misspelled that) Rocks in the background of Dee in a couple of shots. I think I've actually only seen Road Warrior and not Mad Max. A pox upon my house! Woe is Me... Another fun Friday night entry Sterling. Chandu!

@AtomicSnackBar 7 месяцев назад
That's how we do things now. It's all snark, all the time. This no-so-young man has been pushed too far. I'm going all Falling Down....YT style. But you are totally right. Adam Ant was better when he rocked the helmet and the A shirt. Though giving up fighting evil to sing in a fancy singing group was probably the right call. The helmet replacement bill alone must have been something else. And you know, I don't recall the aspect ratio of the actual DVD. I went and checked, but the case didn't say. Whatever the case may be, do not get the bluray. I ran across that version when working on this episode and it's even worse than I thought. I have no idea what a nasqcah rock is. Do tell.

@wetdog1606 - Kwaidan is beautiful to look at and quite enjoyable if you're into Japanese films of the 60s. Which I am. Unibaba however, was a bit too rough and disturbing for my puritan tastes. I prefer Ghost stories like Kurenako from around the same time. A more gothicly romantic story of vengeance and justice served. And R.Sterling has shown no love for Jessica 6 or Logan's Run, irregardless of it's brilliance. Except Box. "My birds! My birds!"

Threads (1984) is the best and darkest post-apocalyptic film. It is a very dark, almost documentary style vision of what happens after Sheffield (England) is nuked. It is a LOT better than The Day After, which I thought was terrible. Everyone really needs to see Threads at least once. Robot Monster? REALLY?!! The ending compromised the setup, you know.
@AtomicSnackBar

I wasn't overly familiar with Threads, though I'd heard of it. Sounds really interesting. And I have a real soft spot for TV films as well. I'll have to look into it further. Interesting list. The first 2 Mad Max movies are great. Really enjoyed them. And both films of Matheson's I am Legend are also great. The Last Man on Earth is a tad closer to the novel. One should watch both as a double bill. Robot Monster is a classic, a little gem, and deserves a viewing. It does not get the recognition it deserves. And a great line "I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot!." Priceless. It was made on a shoe string budget, but most sci-fi films of the 50's were. Good, bad, or indifferent the 50's did produce a lot of well remembered Sci-Fi movies. Thanks for posting this.

Had I not covered The Last Man on Earth in my Top 1960s Sci-fi Episode, but would have been on this one. But I do really enjoy The Omega Man. And you're right, that would make a great double feature. With Robot Monster, the whole "I cannot, yet I must" speech is some of the best alien invader dialog I have ever heard. He's so conflicted. Real depth for a 50s villain. I've never get why people say it's so bad. Actually, I do. They've been programmed to. Thanks for watching, Garfield. Always a pleasure to hear from you.

Today a lot of internet reviewers constantly say how bad recent films are. Some are, many are not. If you see a film and believe you got your moneys worth then it is not a bad film. Two other Post Apocalyptic movies - from the 50s I believe - were The Day the World Ended and World Without End, I highly recommend them both, The Year 2889 is just a remake of The Day the World Ended, one with giant insects would be The Beginning of the End with Peter Graves and Peggy Castle.
