Try attaching an extra Scotty release clip to the handle of your net! Clip the net in the release, it will keep it out of the water until the weight of the fish releases the bag. Works like a charm!

If you were not catching salmon, the water color would tell me you are in a tropical climant. Tips are great. Thanks.

This video was a great introduction to downrigger fishing for salmon in BC. Couple nice Chinook mixed in too. I think that lots of us take our experience and knowledge for granted. Gonna send this to new people before I get them out on the boat.

Thanks for sharing a couple of those "Duh, why didn't I think of that!!" moments, especially liked the one about checking your rig while still attached to the downrigger, awesome tip! 👊

BMO, after retiring from being a Canucks Season Ticket Holder for 32 years and seeing your first career, it's great to now follow your fishing adventures on the West Coast. I hit the subscribed button. I've been blessed to fish these same waters with some good friends who are excellent fisherman, and even so we get skunked the odd time. That's regardless of if it's off the west coast of Vancouver Island, The Sandheads by Steveston, the Cap, or even Langara. Your tips should help those new to the sport.

I point the rod straight up and the line comes right to me to install in the release clip. When I deploy my gear and if the releasee clip slips out of my hand and ends up in the water, I use the rod tip and flip it back into my hand.

Solo fishing with two downriggers is always an adventure. If I hook a fish I put it in the rod holder and deal with the other rod/rigger to get it in. If lucky the fish is still on. Any better way to do this?

When pulling in your line to check if something bit or not its always best to pull it in and check the lure. Sometimes a fish did bite and the lure could be all jacked up or hook bent etc.

Hey Brendan- Love the channel. Curious when you decide to use spoons vs. hoochies? I only have a single downrigger so it's one or the other. Thanks!
@ReelWestCoast
@ReelWestCoast 11 месяцев назад
A lot of times it depends on time of year and the baitfish in that particular area. For example, squid tend to be around the West Coast of the island around the middle of June until the middle of July. This would be a good time to use hootchies. But, with that being said, hootchies can be effective in certain areas like Ucluelet or Bamfiled well into August. My preference is probably spoons. The Gibbs tackle Skinny G and Wee G have been a staple of mine the past couple years. I’ve caught more fish on those lures than anything else. Not even close.
