While the Google Pixel 7 is a great budget buy in its own right, coming in at under $1000, the Pixel 7a offers a very similar experience for $250 less. Under the hood, the Pixel 7a shares the same Tensor G2 chip as the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, making it just as smooth and responsive as its big siblings. This addition also means you get the same AI smarts, like Photo Unblur and Real Tone, giving you even more value for money. The camera setup is even arguably superior to the Pixel 7’s - offering a 64MP main camera to the Pixel 7’s 50MP and a 13MP ultrawide to the Pixel 7’s 12MP one - though Google has said the Pixel 7’s camera sensor is still more extensive and more light sensitive. However, the battery life of the Pixel 7a is pretty average and may not suffice for power users who need a device that can keep up with their high-demand usage throughout the day. You will get a few extras on the Pixel 7 over the Pixel 7a, including a slightly larger screen, somewhat faster charging, spatial audio, and a higher protection water resistance rating. If you can live without these things, the Pixel 7a is a great way to save some cash.
The Samsung Galaxy A35 5G gives you impressive features and a great Samsung display for less than $400. It is packed with Samsung's OneUI software features, which give you plenty of valuable tools, customizations, and shortcuts, especially compared to more basic Android software from Google and Motorola. Compared to other phones at this price, the Galaxy A35 5G offers more camera options, with a 5MP macro camera lens in addition to the 50MP primary camera and an 8MP ultra-wide. It also has a solid battery life with a 5,000 mAh battery, the exact size you'll find in Samsung's big flagship Galaxy S phones. Samsung's Exynos processor is no slouch, but this phone won't be mistaken for a Galaxy S24. Still, you'll have no trouble playing your favorite games and browsing the web with this Galaxy device. If you need a severe work phone, you'll have to spend more, but for less than $400, the Galaxy A35 5G is the best phone to buy.
