Top Sting Band Performances Since 2004

I've ranked the top winning string band performances since 2004, when prop rules were changed. This list was formulated based on how many categories each band won, and what their point differential over 2nd place was in that given year.
Thank you to stringbanddatab... for keeping all these records and making a list like this possible.

Only 1 band was different is the top 20. The Woodland String Band and it was their first 1st prize in their existence.

Joe, While a nice list, you can't use point differential to be your sole determining factor. From 2004 through the 2008 parade, judges were only allowed to score the bands using .25 increments. This created larger spreads than from 2009 until the present when the judging system allowed tenth of point increments. Point spreads during the 2004 to 2008 parades were "artificially" higher because of the larger spreads that were required. As your top 3 are all from 2008 and earlier, your list is unfairly weighted due to the forced point allocations. If your list is only going to be based on the point spread from first to second, QC in 2014 winning by 2.35 in a tenth of a point scoring system, would carry greater weight. Woodland's 2012 total score of 94.40 was the lowest winning score of the past 20 years. While not an accurate method, total winning scores would be a bit more accurate in ranking the performances for the past 20 years simply from a consistency standpoint.

Appreciate the feedback. I didn’t want to use total score simply because judges could score higher or lower year to year. But I will look at the point increments and maybe redo this list with that in mind. Thanks!

@@IrishColonel I would only use scores as an organizer to get a rough ranking. Even in total score, the methodology changed in 2017. Up until then judges scored the bands and turned in their score sheets without the ability to adjust their scores as the competition went on. Judge now have the option to adjust their scores and not lock them in until they've seen every band. From 2017 on there hasn't been a winning score below 96.65 because of this change. Once ranked, you need to use the "eye test"

the parade is dying a slow death. the city doesn't want us and the same 3 bands just rotate first place. I think your list proves that not having a member cap on bands is killing this beloved hobby. Bands are folding and it's sad.

It’s definitely changed, but before 2016 SPSB hadn’t won since 1975, you could have argued the same 3 bands kept winning in the 90’s but it was Hegeman, QC and Ferko.

I think this list unintentionally saying the shows haven't improved if the oldest show is still 1

I don’t think you can say shows didn’t improve, just that scoring was different. I didn’t want to make it a “personal” list. Use of lights, screens, and more have definitely made shows better since 2004.
