I like all the things you said as I have been painting for 25 years now am not doing it on a daily basis, I know that I should be, but life gets in the way, and now that I'm a widow I can have more time to paint, so my greaving process will be a little easier for me . My husband was WWll veteran and I lost him in July at the age of 99, I miss him so much, as he enjoyed watching me painting and went to classes in town . That's was before I found a lot of different artists, like yourself that give so much good instruction. Each one of you have your own personal style and I can use all of them in a painting style to fit my needs. Will send you a picture of my very first painting, and I had on real instruction on how to get started, as the teacher had 15 others that were asking for her help, .. when she came to me she said just follow what the paper instruction said, so I did, but put my own spin on it. I hope that I can send you the picture , am not teck savi but will try.

”Paint what you see, not what you think you see.” - That was probably the best piece of advice I ever received in a painting class, while I was working on my graphic arts degree. And you are the first person I’ve ever heard quote that exactly. I do think of that often, and thank you for reminding me.

All good tips! If anyone is reading, don’t buy a staywet palette because you can make one by using an airtight plastic container, flat cellulose kitchen sponge(s) and freezer or cooking paper. Wet the sponge(s) and wring them out a bit but leaving them damp, cover the bottom of your airtight container with the sponge(s) then cover the sponge(s) with the freezer or cooking paper and put your blobs of paint on top of the paper. Lightly mist the paint blobs. You can periodically mist the paint during painting but it must be done by a fine mist spray, not a normal spray bottle. Then when you have had enough of painting, mist again and put the lid on to seal. If you won’t be painting for a few days just check the sponge underneath is still damp after a few days, and spray the sponge if it’s dry or put it under the tap and wring out. Put your paper with the paint back on top, lightly mist and reseal. I managed 12 weeks of doing this when I became too ill to paint. Replace sponge if you spot any mould on them.

Learning to mix colors is so important. It took me years to realize I should have been following the basics of mixing the basic colors "red, blue, yellow" making a color wheel etc. That improved my painting. Mixing my own blacks from colors like ultramarine blue, and burnt umber, or alizarine crimson. etc. I still use straight black from the tube sometimes But, it looks more natural if mixed for things like landscapes. I also keep a journal of the colors I mix in a little sketch book. That way I can write down what paints I'm using to mix the color I paint a swatch of in the sketchbook. I also paint color wheels in it of different reds, blues and yellows. Just good to get to know how different colors work together.

Using dawn dish soap and an old toothbrush with warm water helps me wash my used brushes when I'm cleaning them. Of course, brush out the old paint by using the tooth brush from the base of the paint brush out to the tips. Loved the hand soap idea to reshape a brush. Thank-you!

I made my own stay wet palette for much cheaper than you can buy one. Buy a long, flat gladware, Ziploc, Rubbermaid, or other sealable food container. You can find ones that are roughly the size of a Sta-Wet palette. In addition, you will need paper towels and parchment paper for baking. In this container, lay some paper towels flat and moisten them. Pour off excess water. Once the excess water is poured off, lay the parchment paper on top of the damp paper towel. You can then put your paints on the parchment paper, and seal it to keep paints wet for a while

There's a problem with tip number 1. A lot of walls are not square. You're better off judging by eye looking at the canvas rather than trusting any old corner of a wall. I'm a plasterer by the way, so I know lol

Thank you for these tips. Love the one about the canvasses. I thought they were all the same and about the primer as well. I bought the Galeria one you have there and it makes a vast difference alright. The first time I tried I painting straight onto the canvas. And I thiught give me paper anyday but I know better now. It pays to put that extra time and money into it. If im going to do it I'll do it well or not at all. Honestly I had no idea there was so many primers and mediums for different things until I got into RU-vid Thank God for it. . God bless Susan 🙏👍🎨😀

This video was extremely helpful. I've got a boyfriend, and his dog of nearly a decade passed away just before him and I met. He loved this dog very much and still talks about him all the time. I've always been a decent sketch artist and have begun branching out with different utensils, one idea that's been recurring is to try painting his dog...I want it to actually look realistic and personal, not just like a dog that looks similar to his. Never having painted before, I have no idea what I'm getting myself into with fabricating this idea and your videos have been very helpful to have predispositions of materials, methods, and techniques. Thank you! If there are any tips anyone has for painting shorter fur that would be great. (The dog is a white short-haired pitbull, very handsome, and I want to do him justice in artform)

If you want to paint wet in wet, because of the blending, with acrylic paint I have a tip for you. (I also teach) you can use the glazing medium from Golden. It’s a retarder with normal medium. Each color you put some drops from this medium and you paint stays wet longer.

Don't store your wet brush upside down in a pot, the water gets into the ferrule and wrecks the brush, that's the other reason you don't rest your brush in the water pot. It weakens the glue binding the bristles together, often weakens the glue holding the ferrule to the handle, and if your brush handle is wooden it will likely swell and or split, unless you want to destroy your brushes.. then have fun

Hang on, with regards to the tip of putting the canvas in the corner of the wall to check for squareness. That's making a HUGE assumption that the Wall is actually square, and that's a dangerous assumption. Even in buildings that are supposed to be square, the walls usually have quite a bit of varience to them.
@hifijohn

I was just going to make this comment walls are rarely square.the best way is to measure the two diagonals if they are the same then the canvas is square.

I've been using the exact same 2 dollar water based paint since I was 7 (some are even the exact same bottles 😭) I seriously need to get new paint, especially since i'm starting to a do a more realistic wildlife art, a lot like yours but done my an inexperienced high schooler 😅a lot of this I have figured out by myself after a lot of trial and error in my 9 years of art and 6 years of painting with acrylics, thank you for making this cool video to save beginners from the same mistakes I had. I finally got to try out some better paint at my school of all places, and wow, using paint that his a higher viscosity is sooo much better, even if it was still just cheap public school paint.

When it comes to the pallete, I use a hard cardboard from an old anti-frame, put two layers of brakfast foil on it. When I'm done I just cut the foil and throw it all away. It also helps me a lot in paint usage, I can grab more paint from the pallete because it doesn't stick to it and the surface is so smooth I can mix colors better. I tried to use a wooden one, a few plastic ones too... But they were always so scratched that it was hard to clean them. Now it's way easier and quicker. Still, I prefer to make a sketch on my computer and then use transfer paper on an already toned background. It also saves a lot of time. Now I painted a spider for my fiance's birthday, using your fur tutorials. I'm getting better at it really fast. I'm sure he will like the painting a lot. The only thing I really need to do is trying to find better paints and learn more about mixing colors. I sometimes waste the paint when the color I wanted to create turned out bad and I need to try again to succeed.
@StudioWildlife
@StudioWildlife 2 года назад
Great tip! I sometimes do this but with biodegradable grease proof paper instead. Works in the same way but the paper can be recycled afterwards. I’ve tried plastic and wood too and didn’t really like them either, I much prefer glass now, so much easier to clean! Really glad you’re finding the videos helpful and good luck with your spider painting!

I was led to believe that storing your brushes upside down causes water to remain in the ferrule of the brush and ruin the fibers of the brush. I always clean my brushes with brush soap, rinse thoroughly, pat them dry with a paper towel and then store them laying flat. Thoughts?
@TheRhythmOfLife1972

Nice tips but should mention the do's & dont's of drying brushes. Flat is best so the water doesn't go into the metal tip and loosen the glue.
