Another neat detail about the fight with Marisa in Great Fairy Wars: norrmally in Touhou, when you defeat the boss, they have a "damaged" set of portraits where they have some (non-lewd) clothing damage, maybe a light injury or 2. After you beat Marisa, it's _Cirno_ that has the damaged portrait, not her, showcasing just how much effort Cirno had to put in to defeat her when she wasn't even going all out.
Another bit of trivia as to why Ultimecia is so powerful: She pulled Griever (or whatever you named him) directly from Squall's sub-conscious. As he made it himself, to be the strongest Guardian Force to ever exist.
On you're number one entry, you forgot one thing. You talked about gruntilda, but did no rhyming! I mentioned it in the stream, but it bears repeating. Not rhyming when talking about her feels like cheating. As I also said, "I don't mean to be a riot invoker. But next time, rhyme, Fiery Joker!" I know others would join in this hazing! Even though I may be paraphasing... I'll be waiting for the next video in this month of hallows eve. I'll be patient until you reveal the next 10 you have up your sleeve. Seems to be about songs that fill one with fear ...Except found in games that typically cause cheer. Practice your rhyming when you again mention the witch at number 1. Come on, it'll be fun! Do it even if you look like a monkey (or is it baboon?), before you end off with your signature...
@@theinsanegamer1024 yeah, putting the intro through a negative filter for green flames just doesnt work when it makes the rest of it look like shit...
I just realized that Ultimecia would fit in perfectly for kingdom hearts now that time travel is such a commonplace trope in the franchise, and with how she does it, it's not far off from how KH does it.
The coolest thing about Marisa imo is that she's one of the only normal humans, no fancy innate powers like Reimu or Sanae, not an inherently magical existence like Magicians (yes Magician is a species in Touhou) and she still keeps up with the rest of the cast.
That's true. Heck, the source of Marisa's magic is that octagonal item she's often seen carrying, the Mini-Hakkero. And the only superhuman thing about Marisa is her tendency to... "Borrow" items a lot.
My prediction entries for the list (in no particular order): 1. Gruntilda (Banjo-Kazooie series) 2. Twinrova (duh, it's on the thumbnail) 3. Drawcia (Kirby series) 4. Cackletta (Mario & Luigi series) EDIT: Would you look at that? I got all my predictions.
Also, during her first fight, the devs know you'll try to use Altina's Brave Order, Ebon Crest, to shield colossal damage from her S-Craft. You have to keep new Class VII alive to get the bonus AP for a higher grade.
There is one neat thing about Marisa that makes her unique. She's the only character in the entire franchise who gets her powers from sheer training. No special ability, no latent magical talent, no superhuman characteristics; just pure training and force of will. She also has kleptomaniac tendencies because she knows everybody else around her will far outlive her, so she steals stuff to learn as much as she can with the intention of letting everyone take back their stuff once she dies.
Even if Miranda didn't actually die by the end of Ethan's fight with her, I'm pretty sure blowing up the Megamycete--the source of her power--probably did the trick... Nice job, Ethan!
My personal favorite Witch boss is the Crimson Roselia fight in Cold Steel 4. For the context, spoilers for Cold Steel 3, Millium, the youngest member of Old Class VII, Altina's sister, and Ironbloods' White Rabbit dies protecting Rean and Altina, and becomes a sword designed to kill a demigod in the form of a corrupted Holy Beast, causing Rean's ogre powers to overtake him, and unleash the Great Twilight upon the world, and he gets kidnapped. After Juna Crawford gives a motivational speech to the Old Class VII, Randy offers to train them in the Saint Gral Labyrinth, basically Cold Steel 4's "Schoolhouse dungeon," but this is a proving ground for the Hexen Clan to venture out and become Wandering Witches. Now you have to be careful, because this fight can really keep you on your toes, due to Rean's curse being the reason New Class VII got weaker, because they need a reason to weaken your party members. It definitely sells the tone for how dire the situation is, and depending on your progress, you'll be graded for your performance if you can keep all 3 members of New Class VII alive after she does her S-Craft, you get 3 extra credit points. Emma's grandma doesn't pull any punches. One of her attacks can even drain your CP if you get caught, which if you read the Red Moon Rose novels, does say that she's also a vampire, but I'm counting her as a witch, because she's always struck me as more of a witch when she fights. Also, she has a sexier older form if she uses her S-Craft, but that's a not important, I just think her older form's hot. There's also her boss theme, Seductive Shudder, which perfectly encapsulates the atmosphere.
And fun fact, you can't use Altina's Brave Order to no-sell Roselia's S-Craft. You *have* to make sure your party stays at full health to survive the S-Craft if you want to get the bonus AP. ...And Roselia is only the *second* boss of the game, mind you. Yeah, Cold Steel IV really doesn't pull any punches with the bosses!
@@warriorofdawn876 I think the devs at Falcom knew we would try to do that. Because, let's be honest, there's a reason why Altina's Ebon Crest costs 5 BP instead of 3. It's very broken, so they made it cost more to rebalance the game and only use it as a last resort.
I know you've mentioned it here once before, but it's really nice to see Touhou getting recognition outside of RU-vid channels that are specifically dedicated to it. Happy Spooky Month, Josh!
@@shinraset: While The Owl House doesn't have a video game... yet (the odds of that happening are unlikely), LWA actually DOES have a video game, Little Witch Academia: Chamber of Time. It also has a VR Broom Racing game.
The Owl House doesn't have a game and probably never will. Unless it's a mobile game that is. That's somewhat likely. Gravity Falls had a game on 3DS that I remember had really good graphics but was only based on the FIRST EPISODE so it was beyond short and like 15 minutes long. (It sold for $20 at launch)
I was pleasantly surprised to see Mz Ruby from Sly Cooper on this list. That's one of my favorite games. The rest were unfamiliar to me since I have little experience with video games outside of articles, reviews, and Let's Plays. However, I did enjoy listening to your descriptions of the games. I learned some interesting new things. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us, Josh! ^_^
That witch from Ender Lilies. The first boss to let you know this IS indeed a Dark Souls metroidvania with a massive spike in difficulty that sets the tone for the rest of the game
Well, due to the split path and being able to take on her or another boss, she's not necessarily the *first* boss to let you know. However, she was definitely a very interesting witch I'd hoped to see myself!
I like the baba-yaga boss in Rise of the tomb raider. Really fun fight. Really runs the folklore #10 I take it we're going to need more than a bucket of water #9 I can dig it. #8 I don't have anything clever #7 Rhythm boss fight. I struggled as a kid #6 please keep your brooding to a maximum of 15 minuets #5 Twass I who fucked a dragon #4 pew pew #3 Zelda is weird #2 Do you think Kirby is an eldritch god? #1 Called it
The Scottish play, or Macbeth. Love it! "Fair is fowl, fawl is fair, hover though the fog and filthy air." "Out damned spot, out I say" Yup one of the best plays ever!
@@quyanapatton6951 I still remember having to read that in class. When we got to the part about the 'cry of woman', no one wanted to do it, so I volunteered. I was the quiet kid, so I'm pretty sure my scream scared half the class at least!
@@quyanapatton6951 "One never speaks the name of the Scottish play." "What, Macbeth?" "AH! Hot potato, orchestra stalls, Puck will make amends!" "You mean you have to do that every time I say Macbeth?" "AH!"
Was not expecting to see Marisa Kirisame on the list. High on the list no less. With how obscure Touhou is in the West, I didn't think he'd even know Marisa even existed.
Finally, some love for Final Fantasy VIII. VII will always be favorite, but I loved the gameplay mechanics of VIII. As much as I love the Ultemecia boss fight, I always felt Edea's boss fight at the end of disc 2 is better thematically. The Garden vs. Garden battle, the revelation that Edea was the surrogate mother of nearly all the protagonists, and the party's confrontation with Seifer came to such a climax it kinda disappointed me that she wasn't the overall final boss. It would've made the final battle more personal, and brought a bigger emotional climax to the final battle. Ultimecia is a great character and well-designed villain/boss battle... but she kinda ends up in the same category as Yu Yevon and Necron in terms of final boss. There were already perfect candidates for a final boss (Edea, Kuja, Jecht... even Seymour in X's case), but the rug was kinda pulled out of under us in the last act. But that's my opinion.
Prolly should've mentioned that drawcia was among the first to do the 'Soul' boss trope in Kirby, so in a sense she's also a trendsetter... Fitting since she's an artist.
My guess is either scariest levels in non-horror games or scariest moments in non-horror games. I feel like Subnautica would be making a cameo there in some way; Minecraft WISHES it could be this scary! O.O
@@bluestreaker9242 Subnautica is basically Minecraft if everything was underwater and was 100x scarier. Minecraft is already a pretty scary game with it's dark caves with exploding creepers and silent skeletons beyond every corner and tons of creepy ambient noiss, but Subnautica takes it to a whole other level. Body horror, elderich abominations, deep dark abysses with unspeakable horrors dwelling beneath, insanely powerful, horrific instakill monsters, and more. When two E10+ kids games are scarier than 99% of horror games, (FNAF, Resident Evil, Yume Nikki, Baldi's Basics, DDLC, ect) you know something's up.
@@krimsonkatt Pretty much, yeah, 'cause, ya know, not everyone's scared by the same thing, but fear of the unknown...now that's a truly potent fear that EVERYONE knows and dreads, because it feeds in to other fears. I'm gonna be honest...I've never played Subnautica...and no, I don't intend to; I'm not afraid to admit it's legitimately too scary for me. O.O
I was so ready to say "What about Gruntilda?" She is the quint-essential video game witch! She looks like one, she fights like one, she talks like one... she *is* one! That being said... Uh, which version of the witch do you prefer? (I know, I know! That was lousy!)
That’s what I’m telling him, and without including dragons since: 1. They deserve an entire boss list of their own, and 2. They’d take up most of the Fire Bosses countdown if they WERE considered, I have nearly TWENTY worthy candidates in mind for him!
@@thetalltitan2235 yeah I meant tales of arise has a fire boss As it's first boss and it's freaking tough so much I think Josh needs to remake his first bosses list
Pretty disappointed that Bayonetta isn't on the list. I know she's not traditional, but I think she has some of the most appealing designs out of any character here, and I'm just saying, BAYO 3 LOOKS REALLY GOOD, AND I WANT THE SERIES TO SUCCEED!!!
Ideas that might or might not be ignored: For 2021 fails: -The Super Mario Bros Movie cast (laughable and memeable) -the Scott Cawthon controversy Ideas for videos: -Luck based bosses (not bosses that can only be defeated if you are lucky, I mean bosses which concept is related to luck, like lucky cats or gambling) -Gold bosses (bosses which are directly related to that precious metal which value is a mess) -Robot bosses (self explanatory) also you could try playing Yo-Kai Watch or watching gameplays of it, it has interesting characters and bosses of all kind, from fire to ice to darumas to a literal reference to Ghostbusters
Which Witch will be be crowned top spellcaster? Let's find out as I give my two pieces of Chocolate on each. 10: A greater scope villain, good start. 9: Talk about one Possessive lady. 8: Bean Witch that Possessed Bowser.... That's two Possessions in a row, I wonder if it's a theme... 7: Dig that voodoo, I can dig it. 6: Time traveling witch.... yikes. 5: Bioware's Crazy old Hag. 4: SUP Boss, okay. 3: Couldn't have a list of Witches without these Twisted Twin. 2: An artsy as hell boss. 1: Just play the Man on the Internet song right here.
I seen all you videos,(some of the games I played myself) I think you and your wife (if she's this)deserve to know The Master of Masters true name: well here it is from my good friend Tetsu Nomura, The Master of Masters' true name is in fact Noctis Lucius Caelum fused with Sora. If you're wondering why I'm doing this, I been told by the staff at Square Enix (Disney also) to keep this hush-hush what with Kingdom Hearts 4 on the rise. Check out the channel Secret reports.(I commented alot of secrets on her channel) Ooh! And one last thing; "May your heart be your guiding key."
Huh. A literal countdown about witches. Guess I should of seen that coming from the cackle at the end of the one video. Wonder "which" "witch" will be the top contender? 😉
Here’s some honorable mention: Magica de spell from duck tales remastered. Adel from final fantasy 8. I-no from guilty gear?? Malifecent from kingdom hearts 1. Witch of hem wick from bloodbourne. Chaos witch quelaag from the dark souls series. Cia from hyrule warriors.
yup, Grunty being number one sounds right! If I got to her it'd be quite the fight! and if the next video is what I think it is, I suspect Metroid (PLEASE let Dread be good and do well!) is gonna be on the list! seriously, Prime 1 spooked me as a kid... still a damn good game though!
An idea I though of would be “cheating bosses”. Basically bosses that go against the normal conventions of the game during the fight, leaving the player thrown off, or at an unusual disadvantage. Ones I considered for this: -Mother Brain from Chrono Trigger: The trick to beating her is using hypno wave on the displays, but the player wouldn’t think to do that since hypno wave doesn’t work on robots in the game. GoGo from Final Fantasy 5: Technically one of the easiest bosses in history when you know how to beat him, but goes against the idea of using different character class abilities to make the fight easier and find optimal strategies. Kalin from YGO 5Ds 2010 Road to Arcadia: He forces both players to play with no hand, his deck gains benefits from that, and the player doesn’t really have any access to sufficient cards that can counter this. Twin mold from the 3DS version of Majora’s Mask: Healing if you don’t successfully knock it down during a cycle is very irritating when you factor in the game time limit, especially since the other bosses don’t have this issue. Psycho Mantis from MGS: Incredibly cool gimmick and iconic boss, but absolutely goes against the other conventions of the game. The Hate Boat from Destroy All Humans Big Willy Unleashed: Your weapons are basically irrelevant, all you’re required to do is toss weapons from the saucer, but you have to have the position right because it’s barrier comes back and, due to where your environmental resources are located in the atoll, you can be stuck dodging for a long while in order to have enough time to actually do damage.
*maniacal laugh* "Behold my handless combo! Dance the dance of death, Yusei! Infernity Death Dragon! One-Hundred Eye Dragon! Earthbound God Ccapac Apu!
When I played Chrono trigger I did not figure out players were suppose to attack the chandeliers around Ozzie, I fought Ozzie for hours seeing Ozzie as some kind of badass.
What I especially find fun about the boss fight against Mz Ruby is that apparently the whole rhythm game aspect of it is supposed to be a homage to the Space Channel 5 series.
Don’t forget that Miranda abandoned her other daughter, Eveline, to The Connections when she was deemed unfit to be Eva. Eveline’s obsession with family, her warped view of love, and using an old woman disguise to avoid suspicion? It all came from her real mom, Miranda.
I was hoping that Hilda, the Witch Of Destruction, from Stella Glow would be in this list. But, I don’t think she’s really that much of a boss fight. In fact, she probably wouldn’t make the list and just be in the Honourable Mentions. I just want more people to talk about Stella Glow. Also the Hags Of Crookback Bog in the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Oh, wow. I was at best hoping a Touhou character being an honorable mention, I didn't think one would actually make the list. It's so rare for someone to mention Touhou characters in videos like this that I'm still shocked even though this wasn't the first time you had one on the list.
If I were a dude I’d say “Well I’ll be a son of a witch!” but I’m not so I can’t 😅😅😅 Thanks for another scary-good Top 10 and can’t wait to see who’s Gaming’s Biggest Witch! Love ya Josh and Ari 💙🐱💙
Well No.1 was pretty much predictable as soon as I saw the title... but that's going to be an interesting next list that was likely teased at the end. [More below} So I'm guessing that Josh's next list is going to be based around "Unsettling/Scary moments from non-horror games", stuff that would likely send chills down your spine despite the game not having such a design throughout the game up to that point. Thinking about it, the only time I've encountered such a thing when playing a game was as recently as Destiny 2. In "Season of the Chosen", there came an exotic quest known as "Presage". The player has to collect a distress signal from an alternate route in the "Arms Dealer" strike upon triggering the alarm. Once the strike is done, you speak to Zavala and get tasked with a recon mission to a ship called the Glykon. The whole thing is seemingly abandoned and your first time through leaves a sense of dread and sends a chill down your spine... with things getting more unnerving when enemies jump out of the shadows and explode on you. The game sends you through trash compactors, abandoned storage bays and even a lab used to create the enemies aboard the ship, all the while feeling the sense of something stalking you. Upon reaching the end, you see a long since dead Guardian, tangled in parasitic vines and clutching a weapon that technically doesn't exist. Scannables and subsequent visits on following weeks also give extra lore as to what happened... but nothing beats the first time through.
Joker: The stench of brooding and overcomplicated plots has permeated this air. Me: Oh God, it's not Final Fantasy is it? Joker: It's Final Fantasy. Me: Goddamn it, I knew it!
Okay I'm going to bring forth another boss here that I used to have trouble with when I was a kid she really irritated me and that is madam amberly from crash twinsanity now a lot of you might be thinking no she's not a witch she's a puppet yes that is true although it's not revealed who controls her just the fact that you have to shoot down all three of her strings to beat her I don't even know where her magic comes from to be quite honest her abilities to use fire and pull up the platforms as well as use thunder as well as simultaneously play the organ while trying to shoot bells that you in the process! I used to have so much trouble with her when I was a kid and I still have severe trouble with her now regardless of that though I don't hate her character she's a good character but her boss battle really does know how to keep you on your toes! For those of you that have played crash twinsanity before you know exactly who I'm talking about and you know why I would classify her for this type of a list but for those of you that haven't played sorry for the spoiler and yeah consider that and incentive to definitely give the game a try out :-)
Those PS3 collections for PS2 games were SO BAD. Like, the quality of those was so bad that they made Sonic Colors Ultimate look like the MegaMan Legacy Collections.
@@krimsonkatt I mean, everything else in those collections at LEAST functioned well enough, but I dont recall ANY MOMENT in ANY of those collections that got botched as badly as the Mz Ruby fiight.
Nice to see evil Big Hat Logan, if only an honorable mention. I'm playing as a Pyromancer, so it's a bit tougher than say if I were up close and personal all the time. But magic is my thing for Dark Souls.
like: the subject matter and the video itself dislike: the poorly edited intro (turning the fire green while making everything else look bad) honestly even slapping some pumpkins into the intro would've been better than putting everything through a filter like that.
ULTIMECIA FFVIII LET'S HECKING GOOOOOOO!!! -Also yes she is basically Xehanort as well as Xande done right glad someone else finally noticed- Glad you didn't trash talk the game, at least not that much. Everyone says it's "the game that killed Final Fantasy" and it gets such a bad rep. XD
Honestly, the fact that Josh hasn’t mentioned or enlisted Kingdom Hearts, nor Pokémon on behalf of Ari, but DID in fact mention Mario (given I’m a die hard Mario fan and that I talk about to death like Josh does with KH), to me, says EVERYTHING about this list!
