A good tip would be, pay attention to the environment while in combat. A lot of times Larian put things to interact that help out tremendously and a good old Push can make your life so much easier when the enemy is close to a ledge.
Just a note, camp supplies can be useful in the open world... for example I found a situation with a particular enemy on chapter 1, where an npc was drunk and sleep, if the player makes any noise, they wake up and treat you, but if you have alcohol in your inventory, you can give it to them by dialog and they go right back to sleep... as a mean to avoid the fight. So for that, I keep a few selected supplies at hand that may be useful, just in case.
Throwing a potion is a double-edged sword if you are at an elevation. I once threw a potion of healing at my 1hp character from high ground and killed it, because the throw did more damage than the healing potion healed
I had that problem once, too. Then I figured out, that I do Not need to throw the potion exactly ON my companion, but one the ground next to him or her. Side effect: All my companion next to the other one were healed too.
I just wanted to say i really apprechiate the transparency in the beginning. No clickbait, no stay till the end, just a genuine guy trying to help. I just stumbled across this vid and know most of the tipps already but im gonna watch all of it just for ur stats🙏thank you we need more of this on youtube❤
I tried this too at first, but being a person that RPs a lot (in my head) i always hold some nice RP items like jug of water, shovel, a nice looking gem, a book, lockpicks, ropes, a bottle of wine or something like that on my second row, so when i sort the inventory all those items go in other places. Then i have to drag all those items in row 2 and that is a pain in the ass. So for me that is not an option, again, personal choice to use RP items. So another thing you can do is to keep a trash bag (satchel) on hand and just put all your trash items in it. When you are at a vendor just sell your trash bag and you also get the gold for the items too. Then you can buy back the bag from the vendor. This is a neat way to alternatively organize your trash loot if you dont want to click on every item and "add to wares". This will also help you if you reach your carry limit on a character by simply sending the trash bag to your camp chest and selling it later. You can also send the food in your camp bag back to camp to get rid of a few extra kgs/pounds. It works out if you want to play more immersively as you can imagine yourself dumping a bag full of weapons on a merchant's stand and saying "It's a bag-o-weapons, about 50 kgs, how much can you give me for the lot?" and seeing the bewildered look on the merchant's face. XD
Ty for this great video. I didn't know anything about D&D rules and terms, but after watching a few guide videos like this one i learned a lot to get me started. Here is my tip: I cannot overstate how powerful the DIP bonus action is in the early game. You can dip your melee or ranged weapon in any surface, but mostly you will find fire in the game world. With this knowledge i blazed through the fights in act 1 with 2-3 of my characters having fire damage on their weapons which is a 1-4 extra damage on top of your attack rolls. A way you can have a PORTABLE fire source with you at any time is to get a candle on every character that uses weapons (that dont have elemental damage already). You will find many candles in crypts and dungeons in Act 1 in boxes or you can pick them up from furniture. In combat, go in your inventory and drop the candle, then light it (these two actions dont cost any action points), then dip your weapon in it (bonus action) then you can also attack. All in a single turn. If you keep your party together all your characters can dip their weapons in a single candle. BOOM now you have fire damage on weapons. Candles are not consumed and dont run out as long as you remember to pick them up after combat ends (i forgot them a few times XD). This will increase your damage in all fights in the early game and later on you can specialise your elemental damage depending on enemy resistances and weaknesses by carrying various potions which you can toss on the ground creating an elemental puddle that your party can dip their weapons in. Also remember to INSPECT enemies (T button) when you encounter a new enemy type to see what resistances / weaknesses they have. You can also see their armor class and monster type as well as other stats. No point in wasting time dipping weapons in fire if the enemy is fire resistant. Double DIP your way to victory and have fun!
Tip on top of the tips (lol) for healing potion throwing - in the situation showed in the video, you could have thrown the potion on the ground for an Area of Effect (AoE) heal which would have healed your character AND Karlach as well. The potions will explode into a small AoE heal when thrown at the ground.
@@Evil_This you are not alone thats why i prefer to target one specific character while throwing potions in case it misses unless really need the aoE heal
@@italianspartacus Also worth noting that you probably shouldn't throw a healing pot directly at a friendly target. I've seen quite a few posts from people saying they accidentally killed an ally by direct impact from a thrown healing potion.
@@davidgold-f9e basically 1-4, in d&d players use all sorts of different dice, 1d4(4-sided), 1d6(6-sided), 1d8,1d10,up to 1d20. If you see 2d6 it means two 6-sided rolls, so 2-12
In your dual-wielding toggle section, one thing I've noticed most "do / don't do this to improve" videos I've watched don't cover is using bonus actions first to improve damage: hunter's mark and reapply hex being the primary that come to mind. If you use these bonus actions first the main action will benefit from the bonuses.
1 thing I found life saving with controls: I changed the "Camera Rotate" to my right click mouse button, while changing previous right click mouse actions to middle mouse button. A nice swap that makes maneuvering the camera and characters around the world much easier.
Wow, I learned many new things in your video. Thank you. This is my first-time playing D&D or anything based on D&D, so I was completely clueless on... well, basically everything. I didn't even know what a "1d20" was. After playing the game for a few days, I figured out most everything to play the game at a noob-level. Now that I'm a master noob and know your tips, I think I can take the next step. Great video and presentation. Cheers!
You can ice blood puddles the same as water. This is useful when fighting big enemies that leave massive puddles. Also, don't forget to use "speak to dead" if you have it. You don't really use it in the story, so might as well use it, specially if you get an item that allows for a free use. Use it on area bosses or more important characters for more lore development and sometimes helps progressing quests and gives you more dialog options with other characters. You can also ask them about any hidden loot in the area they ruled. Also, and this is VERY IMPORTANT, keep a look out for permanent buffs. There are ways to be blessed or get buffs (like permanent invisibility detection or permanent temporary hit points when low) that last even through long rests. They are found in the weirdest of places, so explore as much as you can (like, a BDSM session with a fanatic in a cave). Also, don't worry about backlogging interactions with your party members in the long rest camp. If you are worried that some romance interactions are missed because other story events take place, don't worry. The game remembers them and will put them out as soon as it can. Sometimes they are delayed because you need to be outside of dungeon or things like that, but they don't go away. ALSO, remember you can put the *spoilers for the first 10h/15h of the game* brain worms in your party members too, if you succeed in convincing them. This gives them the powers too. But, if you have it, don't use charm person for advantage on this checks on your party members. After it wears off, they will dislike it. You can also check how much they approve if you in the character sheet of the party member. In the last tab of the character sheet, scroll down to see exactly how much they like or dislike you.
If you hover a surface and the path line changes to a blue color that means that surface behaves like water, meaning you can freeze it or electrify it. A yellow color means difficult terrain and moving throught it costs the double movement distance, and a red color means the character is gonna receive damage if it walks there.
If you have 4 inspiration points you might as well, depending on who you have in the party I find them easy to come by, and 4 is the max available at a time. Although astarion has never broken a pick yet so I agree with lockpicking.
Will it split the heal amount between everyone? Or just everyone gets the full amount that the potion normally heals? Like let's say the potion would've healed 5 if I drank it. Now instead I place it on the ground between 3 people. Are all of them getting 5 each, or are all of them getting like 1-2 each now?
@@fenix648 damn if so, it seems like there's absolutely no reason to ever drink it. Unless everyone is fully healed except one, or it's mid fight or something and getting the party together would require time you don't want to spend, or turns.
@@sjk7467drinking it is a bonus action and throwing it is a full action, so it really depends on how many people are injured and what you're trying to do in the fight
Despite being Australian I still switched it to Imperial measurements because I’m used to DnD and both editions of Pathfinder using it - like movement in the tabletop games was always in multiples of five (because the grid you’d use for the fights was always meant to be five-foot squares) and it just helps me use my pre-existing system knowledge in the video game.
Just got this game yesterday and have been enjoying it quite a bit! This video here has already helped me in a number of ways I have to admit so I decided to leave a comment; thanks :3 So, I actually liked this video so I can go back to it more easily later on because... legit the day after watching this I forgot like, several of the things you said in it and I wanna have it as a quick guide just in case lmao
I actually INCREASED the number of my saved saves. Came in handy: a quest for Druid Halsin was bugged....requiring me to go back FOUR GODDAMNED HOURS to get it done properly.
Thank you so much for this. I was scratching my head, staring at all those wee little buttons. It’s been a while since I’ve played MMOs or games with similar inventory and taskbar challenges.
My frend, i have seen a lot of these guide videos for BG3 because i like to be well informed before going into a complicated RPG like this, but you videos are a cut above the rest in info and presentation. I take my hat off to you, sir!
I have to say, this has been one of the most helpful videos on this topic. I have a deep background on 'game mechanics ' but litte BG3 system knowledge. This has helped immensely.
Love your content the way you upfront all the knowledge makes it very easy to get the information and get back to the game but also passively listen to the video for more information on things I care about
I've always enjoyed (aside from your voice, beard and gameplay) your willingness and encouragement of the community to help one another out in the comment section. So wholesome. Who would have thought the internet had it in them?
So much to learn..... I get the feeling that I will be spending much time reloading saves as I try out may of your tips (especially during combat) or just spending lots of time in between battles to learn how to set the bars and slots up into something useable for me. Thanks for the clear explanations..
I'll say right now, even 8 hr in, (2nd time as the creator bugged on me it turns out), this was super useful. I've seen No other creator talk like this about the game mechanic. The Devs seem to assume you'll come to the game with a comprehensive knowledge of the board game.. And the tutorial for the game is pants, non existent. Would like to see more of these in regards to actions/abilities/skills use for combat & other scenarios. It's a pain the game doesn't have a glossary linked to everything giving a proper breakdown; so you know exactly what you're using & how best to use it. The game narrative being you're ment to know all this stuff, as its not like your character is a farm-hand new to it all & having to learn & discover. Anyways.. loved this.
Would love to see Steam Workshop access/support for this game in the near future. As they'll be the ones to fix the bugs, & other issues, still going on; & refine the game. I'll say again, a glossary/compendium linked to skills/abilities actions, even similar for armour/weapon types, would be a massively useful resource in game. Throw in some Law from this Universe.
@@Han_Shot_1stdo you mean Lore not Law? If not that's a strange sentence but absolutely having a glossary/index would improve the game because some terms are obvious for 99% of people but have been subtly changed for BG3 over D&D so it's less of a surprise if you can look things up
Hey great video, just a note, maybe it was in an update, but you can get rid of your friends characters, the same way you would other characters at camp. But if you do you can’t get them back until your friend joins again, they don’t just wait at camp for you. Cheers
Watching your videos has gotten me so much more excited to play on ps5 when it comes out . Each of your videos are so informative and i feel like i have a good grasp on what I want to do and how to do it when I finally jump in and play. Thank you good sir.
Changing to imperial system also seems like a good move if you've played some D&D and just started BG3 Otherwise i wouldn't know what to do with my 3.048 meter pole 🤔
Really good video, i particularly appreciate the early format and the ability to jump to each tip which many videos of this type dont do. Keep up the good work
Never played a single game of DnD, and I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing in this game, but it's still my favorite game of the decade because of the story. Hopefully watching this guide will make be a bit of a less noob lol
There are reasons go use bonus action offhand attacks seprrate. Some weapons have special triggers when an enemy js low hp. Or they have low hp already and you dont need a full attack to kill. Just my 2 cents.
It never bloody occurred to me to send my camp supplies to my camp instead of carrying them all around with me! 🤦♂️ Thanks for the pro tips! 😎👍 Scott 🤓🤓
3:46 There has been a patch around that Karmic Dice so now it only prevents long failure streaks instead of preventing both failure and success streaks so its safe to turn on without the game forcing your rolls to be lower. Ofc if u still want total random dice rolls feel free to leave it off.
I did not realize until hundreds of hours into the game that: (a) Inspiration points are shared between characters; e.g., when "Lae'zel is Inspired," I thought that was only hers to spend; and (b) that Inspiration points are capped at a maximum of 4; I let a lot of Inspiration points go to waste, thinking I was banking them for later.
My first run was a disaster! I was on the lowest difficulty and kept getting murked. Largely because I didn’t understand spell slots, how to properly spec companions and what equipment to use. It’s a learning curve, like with any game. My second run has been much better!
That “side tip” at 19:00 is crucial! You can not just drop into someone’s game to show them something then leave. You will kick out a random party member and EFF UP their single player play through.
Yeah I really hope they fix this I don’t want a solo player and have to make a whole new character so I can play with friends just let me keep ‘em at camp or just kick em
For me it was learning environmental uses. Like dipping your weapon in any element. Fire is everywhere like candles, or if someone hits you with a ground of acid use that. Another is looking up or at statues that can be hit to deal damage, a lot do situations have them placed purposefully like chandeliers or stalagmites.
Saving is very important, I have like the max, its quite a bit & it was 1GB and a half, but well worth it, this type of game u are gunna want saves, to ensure the 70hrs. in, theirs nothing to worry about.
OMG, I keep forgetting to use Shift and Ctrl to manage my inventory and to move things around. I HAVE been right clicking and "send to X" player to move things around. Your tips are going to save me so much time now! :) I also did not know about hitting T to examine enemy to see what their stats were. Great tip!
I would really like if in the next patch they could let the player dye the bags and pouches different colors. I don’t really care about dying armour especially that there is so many different colors in the game, I have a lot that I don’t use. IMO it would help with organizationand quick acces to things a lot
Yeah it will be a lower average role w/ karmic dice, but the variance will be lower. Meaning a random sample of rolls will have a slightly lower average score yes because streaks of nat d20s are not possible but the spread on that lower average will be considerably lower meaning more consistent rolls.
There's something I'd like to add... if you have disguise self or seeming on, some of the dialogue is messed up when another party member is supposed to chime in. As a specific example I was doing the end of shadowheart's specific quest with seeming on so she didn't look like herself, and for some reason that didn't seem to affect a non-party-character's dialogue who addresses shadowheart directly, the dialogue for shadow heart's response comes up, but there's no audio and the camera points to some empty space, like it would normally cut to a close up of shadowheart, but she's not there and the dialogue continues as if she replied... there's even a dialogue option to let her speak, everyone reacts as if she were speaking but she's not. so for important scenes like that, maybe turn buffs that disguise you off.
I had no idea about the Karmic dice and I’m already level 10 with quite a few legendary items. I was wondering how I was still getting hit so often when my parties lowest AC is 20 lol.
It can help. Also, higher creatures have better modifiers like your party does. And they start throwing more spells to hit you in weak areas for your saving throws. It's just how the D&D 5e system works. It's called "bounding accuracy".
Had a few fights today I definitely got hit less and my fighter archers accuracy went up from average of 80% to 95%. You can see the percentage difference if you test it on the same fight. Very odd system they added made early game way harder.
Do not reduce the number of saves, I had to go back to an elderly save due to a bug that prevented me from moving the main quest along, but I did not realize until I put like 20h into trying to push the game forward by doing other quests until I realized I had a bugged state, if I did not have elderly save files I would have to start over.
I think for me, my biggest frustration, the game doesn't explain anything. I have played lots of rpgs, shadowrun, m&m, vampire the masquerade, fallout lol, the list goes on, anyway, my point being, I have never had the chance to play dnd. I don't know what a cantrip is or how it works, I don't know why my spell all of a sudden isn't working? I see it says long rest or partial rest on some of them, but, then when I use some spells it will block out other spells I didn't know it would block out all of a sudden? I just changed to warlock from sorcerer, I had no idea how to use the metamagic, they never seemed to work? Or I just didn't understand how they worked? They said passive, but seemed to not have much of an effect if any, I had no idea if I had even cast it properly? What I'm trying to say is, I am really liking the game, I just think they forgot the tutorial or helpful hints for people who may not know certain things. It reminds me of a few of my favorite gaming experiences, so, I really want to enjoy it, but, I hope that they put in a future patch sometimes to make it less frustrating for people like me who are new to the world itself. I would like to try playing a sorcerer again, but, for now i'll wait, plus, I don't hate my warlock at all, I do miss my dragon scale cheekbones though...those were cool.
I just learned a new tip I would like to share with everyone. When you're delving deep into a dark dungeon NEVER EVER walk into a small room full of explosive barrels and alcohol spilled on the floor with a lit torch in your hand. Thank me later.
Just a heads up, as far as I know, the save files are only about 8-32 MB per, so, it's not that bad, and they are stored on %localappdata%, so, if you record to a separate drive, then it literally does not matter. Have about 32 in total, totaling 465 MB. You can also sym link this folder to a different drive if you want to have them stored somewhere else, LinkShellExtension, move the folder, right click it, pick as source, then go back to the regular location it should be at, and drop as junction.
Question about dialogue encounters & approval: If you use a companion to conduct the dialogue .. let's say your custom character build has low Charisma .. so you need some help during dialogues .. will you still get your other currently nearby companion's approval? Or, must your specific Character conduct the dialogue encounter (& subsequent dice rolls) for their approval? Apologies if this seems a bit obvious; but there are game mechanics which often seem counterintuitive.
Fantastic question. I'll test later today and let you know. I usually have Wyll do my talking and it got me in S-hart's pants so I'm thinking u get credit
