Having Topaz Denoise AI is having a new expensive lens. Btw, it's recommended that you crop, then Denoise, before making other adjustments. If your image is almost perfect to begin with, it doesn't matter what order you use, but if you have a noisy and unclear image it'd better to Denoise first before other adjustments.
@tkermi
@tkermi 3 года назад
But isn't it better to make most of the editing by using the raw file? And then export the file in TIFF format to Topaz Denoise AI. Many people say that Topaz has not so good raw converter. I haven't tried it out yet but from the examples I have seen it looks like for the best result first use DxO PRIME (to raw file) and then Topaz Denoise AI (to TIFF file).
@Lukas_Hart
@Lukas_Hart 3 года назад
@@tkermi With adjustments like clarity, sharpen and others you "sharpen" the noise and even when you mask your sharpness you make it more visible with other sliders by bringing up the (micro) contrast. My workflow is crop, whitebalance, bring down highlight and lift up shadows all the way (because the converter loses some details in the far ends), denoise in Topaz, in LR bring back the highlight and shadows and do the rest of the edit. The Problem with sharpen the noise is that Topaz looks for detail (sharp edges) and if the noise sharpness is over the threshhold of detail sharpness it wont denoise it as much and sharpens it afterwards. Thats what I discovered by playing around with the order of adjustments
@_systemd
@_systemd 3 года назад
@@Lukas_Hart how the hell do you export files from topaz to edit them afterwards in LR. whatever I did, I am not able to have the same 'edit-ability' of an image that comes from topaz. Be it 'unmodified format' tiff, dng, whatever, it does not behave anymore in LR the same way as the original does, the ability to edit the file and colors and such goes way downhill. hence my worflow became edit in LR without NR and then tiff it to topaz as the last step.
@Lukas_Hart
@Lukas_Hart 3 года назад
@@_systemd I use it as an external editor. So LR creates a copy of the image and opens it in Topaz. When I apply the NR to the Image in Topaz it saves the changes on the copy and I can edit further in LR. But I noticed the same behavior you described... Maybe your way is the better option. I will try! BTW do you sharpen the image before exporting from LR and edit in Topaz? I read somwhere on the Topaz website, that they recommend to do the NR before all the editing, explicitly before sharpening.
@_systemd
@_systemd 3 года назад
@@Lukas_Hart I am fresh to this thingy, but for now I only remove color noise in lightroom, and then in topaz I apply noise reduction and sharpening (just now I ve installed topaz sharpen to test dedicated sharpening tool). It's a learning curve for sure.

Tim,i have been experimenting with Topaz Denoise and have found that doing both the cropping and the editing after applying Denoise not only improves the quality of the final image it also reduces the denoise computer processing time. The only pre-Denoise edits that appear to benefit the final images are adjustments tothe highlight and shadow areas to reveal lost detail in those areas

Tim I too recently bought Topaz DeNoise AI 2.0.0. It has transformed my image quality with the Olympus files. I thought I would share with you my processing algorithm. I find I can get usable images up to ISO 6400 and occasionally beyond. I am not pretending these higher ISO images compare to Canon full frame but they are a whole lot better than they were originally. I use it as a Plug in in Photoshop. I always expose to the right and I use Shadows/Highlights in the viewfinder as opposed to the histogram. Workflow: 1 Check Colour Temp and Color Balance in the raw converter, I use ACR sometimes Olympus Workspace. ( I did use LR for a while but it filled up my C Drive and the PC ground to a halt!!) 2 Check Exposure only I do not sharpen at all - I think this important. Sharpening increases noise, this is axiomatic, I appreciate you can mask it but why generate it?? 3 Topaz Denoise much the same way you have outlined, I use DeNoise AI then click Auto then Manual to see if any parameters require a tweak. Occasionally I increase NR to Medium and very occasionally I increase the Sharpen. Usually (90%) the default settings are fine. At this point 99% of images are very much cleaner and adequately presharpened. I usually add Recover detail up to 20-25 4 To Photoshop or LR . In my case PS followed by Smart Object layer and I make an ACR layer then I process as if I was starting with the original raw file, I do not require any sharpening at this stage, Topaz has already done it! I only sharpen the final file used for printing or the jpeg for web distribution. 5. This results in comparatively much cleaner files than I have ever had previously. I think if you try this method you will find that the files are cleaner, have a go, see what you think. I am so pleased with the results I use this now on nearly all images (regardless of ISO) because I think the conversion is cleaner and sharper than ever before.

I also bought it. It has side effect unnoticed by the others: the size of JPEG files is smaller, reduction from 30 to 50% depends on noise level. So I denoised my whole archive for 10 years thanks to batch processing in commercial version and reduced storage size by 30% approximately.

Nice video. I replaced my video card (2G VRAM) with a GetForce 2080 that has 8 G VRAM and it makes a HUGE difference in Topaz. Runs 4 or 5 times faster. Just one warning about DeNoise. It does not handle DNG files very well. I have talked to support and it is a known issue and being worked and they recommended just using TIFF files. My other question is why you would sharpen before you denoise. I would think you would try to eliminate the noise before you sharpened. That doesn't preclude you using a mask.

I've just purchased Denoise after trialling for the past month, it's a great tool. However using auto I've found it bumps up sharpening a little too much and noise reduction not enough so almost always go to manual after to bring noise up 10 and sharpen down about 10. Also trialling DxO Photolab with it's prime denoise and Topaz is simply better for me.

Thanks for your tutorial. A question, please, Why did you sharpen (although masked), before using AI DeNoise? I thought the processing worked best by taking sharpening to zero first and not using any other adjustments that could add noise, then processing your pics? I’m not being critical, just asking for your reasoning to see and maybe better my processes. One more question, have you seen AI DeNoise: AI Clear; or AI Sharpen, add weird patterns or artifacts? (Especially on feathers and wildlife fur) ???
@GodwitMediaLLC
@GodwitMediaLLC 4 года назад
I shouldn't have sharpened before I use the Topaz. It makes more sense to use Topaz for the sharpening and noise reduction, then if the image needs more sharpening use the Lightroom sharpening as a local/masked process. Thanks for asking.

Personally I've been using Shaarpen AI for a while and have been impressed. It has rescued or improved on many photos for me. However..you have to be careful as it can add artifacts along edges (for one thing), so depending on the photo importance you may have to spend some time cleaning up.I've found it happens more often when you push the sliders past the recommended 'auto' settings. Also in some instances I've found artifacts in the bokeh. So great tool up to a point but the more you push it the more clean up to do. Still confused however between Denoise AI and it's clear/sharpen features and Sharpen AI.

In my opinion the AI-gain is not obvious compared to DeNoise 6. I think the AI argument is oversold for some of Topaz' filters. I have not experienced a noise pattern that AI could manage better than DN6. AI may be easier for uncomplicated situations, but otherwise the unpredictable controls and general slow performance is a set back. When the shadows are totally broken up the AI Clear can be efficient with careful masking. Maybe AI means Arguably Intelligent.
