I have watched a few of your videos. After seeing the persistence in pursuing this matter, I am now subscribed to the channel. Thank you for your diligence in reporting the issue and following it up for you and your subscribers.
I use a Benchmark DAC1 for my main sound system and two D50S, one at my desktop with iFi Zen Blue via coaxial input, one with WiiM Pro Plus streamer via coaxial input - both Toppins DACs powered by their own Topping P50 linear power supply. Very satisfied. No issues with the Toppings!
My experience to fixing the Topping D50S intermittent dropout sound problem on the coaxial input is that you have to use a 75ohm coaxial cable as short as possible, besides that you should also use a linear power supply because it will make the coax signal more stable compared to a USB phone charge. Since 6 months of using this method I never again experience the intermittent dropout sound problem as before. In my application I use a Monogami 2964 75ohm cable 50cm lengths with Amphenol ACPR connector and BRZHIFI 1A Linear Power Supply and coax input source from Sony BDP-S1500 BD player
I am absolutely hooked. I can not miss any of your videos as I am an audiophile fan. (the British made amazing NAD brand started it all for me //I still own one//) I love your incredibly well articulated ways. What a pleasure to watch and listen. I did buy the D50s after all. Thanks for letting us know how great this little inexpensive magic box is. Cheers.
I've owned a D50s for over a year and use it regularly (although until recently mostly via the Optical input), about two weeks ago I added a laptop as a source via a the USB input, and two days ago a Pioneer Elite DV-48AV as a transport via the Coax input and so far I haven't had a single issue. If I'm an oddball for loving physical media so be it, man do I love CDs and thanks to the Topping DAC they sound fantastic.
Really appreciated all your work trying to figure out the issue and making all the contacts. I'm shopping DAC recently and this video is really helpful.
Hi Paul, I‘m pretty sure that there is a generic problem with the D50s Coax input since my issues are even more strange. My D50s is connected to a Bluesound Node with a 50 cm coax cable and worked without dropouts or other problems. Then I wanted to change the position of my Bluesound Node and therefore needed a longer coax cable. I changed it to a 2 m Sommer coax cable (of course a 75 ohms cable) and got no sound at all! The D50s didn‘t unlock and switched off after some seconds since there was no signal detected. I took another cable with a length of 1 m. This worked with cd quality tracks but playing high res tracks 24 bits, 192 kHz I got a sound full of dropouts and glitches! Next I tested with another 1 m cable and this worked perfectly! All the tested cables have been used before for other digital connections and I didn‘t ever experience any issues. I did some investigations in the internet if this was a known issue and found several users with exactly the same problem. Some cables work, others don‘t. The chance to get it work properly is better when using a short cable up to 0,5 m.
I have had this experience many times in the past 30 years, and I am confident this particular issue is much more common with digital equipment. First... there is only one digital RCA jack. Two... many inexpensive sourced parts (the RCA jack) come with protective coatings. Three... reconnecting a plug many times will eventually wear off that coating if you do not use a solvent like acetone or chloroethene to clean it. Four... this coating on the analog jacks will not create a problem but can be verified by scoping a sine wave on the outputs before and after you clean them. If you please let me know if that is the issue. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing. I had an equally weird glitch. Long story short, after installing a new preamp and amp (with no tone controls), and after a new song was playing perfectly for days, all of a sudden one day, the playback went from stereo to mono! Problem fixed after swapping out a cable. Don't know and don't care what is the actual problem.
No problems at all for my topping d50s. 👍🏻Works perfectly fine.😁 The sad thing is that every time we purchase a product we hope to get lucky enough to not have a problem with it. 😏
Well Paul bless you what a todo as they say . First I must congratulate you on bringing this to our attention , you are a very honest and informative commentator . I hope that those who are in the industry are taking note of your concerns , My best wishes and kind regards as always 😀👍👍👍
Paul. You may be interested to know my experience. I have an Oppo 95 Blue Ray player that I've used as a transport for years. In order to save money, I purchased a half meter length of a rather expensive digital coax cable. The cable sounded fine to begin with then the music would stop. I had to restart things several times then nothing. I installed a firmware upgrade on the aging Oppo and no change. I contacted the confused cable company who very helpfully sent me a full one meter length of the same cable. Like magic the Oppo began working again and has continued to do so. The cable company was gracious enough to exchange my half meter for a full meter at no additional cost. The Oppo continues to work flawlessly with any one meter length of digital cable I use.
I had a similar problem with a electronic (in development) and it was a cold soldering connection, after the device was heat up, this problem was done. The only way to be sure this problem didn't occur again was to find the cold connection with ice spray and resolder this point. Nice video 👍
just happened across your channel watching dac reviews, read the comments and can’t believe no one has commented on the single cell orchestra vinyl…sub’d.
Tighter tolerances is generally a good thing. But excessive jitter will fall outside those tolerances. The AKM fire set a flurry of redisign. Frenzied work left a few soft patches here and there. But run-in seemed to sort things out. In any case I would use USB connections for trouble free operation.
I seem to have a similar problem with the d50s. It always works with optical, usb, or Bluetooth, but coax input is very erratic. Sometimes works for days or weeks, and sometimes doesn’t work for days or weeks. I thought that it might be related to the raspberry pi streamer (with allo digione “hat”), but have become convinced that it is the d50s. Changed cables and tried other digital input sources, and it still doesn’t work. On the other hand, the raspberry pi streamer works fine into other dacs. The d50s coax input sometimes starts working again during the course of trying different configurations to “fix” it, but equally often stops working after I make some “innocuous” change (ex. unplug some cables to move things around slightly). I’m convinced now that it is some sort of noise/ground problem. I have seen reference online suggesting some bad resistor value choices that were used on the coax input.
I have a d50s and I have used it mainly with the Bluetooth connection (which has a very good sound quality I must say). I have also used the optical and digital connections with a Yamaha cd-s 300. The Usb connection I used it just for half and hour to test it with my PC. I must say I haven't had any of the issues described in the video and I have to say that I'm very happy with it, I like the construction and the sound quality it produces. I also have a audiolab 6000cdt I have just bought and I intend to use with the DAC in the near future.
Did you hook up your audiolab 6000cdt to the D50s coaxial input and if so did it work without dropout issue? Your D50s has the CS 8416 spdif chip as described by Paul in the video?
@@barrystamp8600 Yes, I connected the 6000cdt trough the d50s and had no dropout issues. I dont know if there are different chip models in this DAC, havent heard of it.
@@jorgeplaza7938 Thank you for the info. It depends when you purchased your DAC...All new Topping using CS8416 spdif receiver (As mentioned by Paul in his video) instead of the AKM chip. What method you connecting the Audiolab to this Dac, opt or coax? What cable lenght + Make of cable are you using?
Thank you sir👍 I can see I'm not alone beeing annoyed with these "chinesish" issues. I'm not using coax with my E30-II, only usb and optical (wich I use for a bt receiver), no drop-out, at all. Some pops when I change file from dsd to regular pcm, but I guess it's about buffers...
I had similar problems of cutouts with the Audiolab 6000cdt when using the coaxial output. I suspect that the dac is good and the fault is with the Audiolab 6000cdt
I am having an issue with UNLOCK that I cannot find any answers to! D50s DAC with P50 power supply; USB and Bluetooth work fine, but the UNLOCK issue is with OPT to my SONY CDP-XE370 CD player. I've tried two different OPT cables and the issue is still there. Please, can anyone help?
I just got a new D30Pro and similar cutouts happen constantly when connected via optical to my Technics SL-PS700 CD player. The Topping is updated to v2.45 firmware. Interestingly enough, if I turn down the "level" on the CD player the music would not play at all.
I have the earlier D50 w/P50 power supply (a huge upgrade sonically) and have never has this problem....I also like it better overall than the "hot" SMSL SU-9 too.....surprise! Sent it back. I am enjoying a SMSL M200 though. Pretty good in its own right.
Please, how should I set up D50s as regards MQA? NO MQA SUPPORT/DECODER AND RENDERER/DECODER ONLY/RENDERER ONLY?? Would very much appreciate an advice on this subject. Thanks in advance
I had a similar issue with my new Audiolab 6000CDT connected to a Parasound Halo and thought the new CD player was defective. I tried a few other CD players with the same coax cable and had the same dropout issue. And guess what no more dropouts after disconnecting and reconnecting the different sources to the Halo I ended with the Audiolab player and it played perfectly. No dropouts. Maybe the dropouts were only in my head. I guess I'll never know.
Interesting... I have a Lavaudio DS600 which we all know looks very much like the Topping D50s but has an additional headphone jack. I regularly experience the same kind of drop-outs lasting 2~8 seconds between any given two tracks on a CD, when and only when I have a certain model of bluetooth speaker connected via a 3.5 to 3.5 cable to the DS600 headphone jack. No such problem occurs when I have a pair of earphones plugged in to the same headphone jack and everything works fine. I guess I will have to try cable connection of some other bluetooth speakers available around me and see how the CDs go.
I bought a Topping D50s yesterday and it's not working. My issue is with the USB input. The first time I connect the D50s and play a track I get approx 4 seconds of music then it cuts out. Any track after that i get silence. Bluetooth works perfectly well with the D50s and I don't have optical or coaxial cables to try. I bought the dac for the USB input so it's a real disappointment
I too have had issues with this since i purchased it before the pandemic and thought it was me or my equipment, well since everything else is working perfectly i again conected the unit to my system and did some reserch on the web and low and behold its not me its you "TOPPING" Audiophile Man do you have any connections or reccommendations on how to get a refund or exchange for this piece of ? ty, SC
first at all, i prefear read articles instead to watching videos, but is my fault, i'm too old to rock and roll (too young to die) and, then, with P50 linear supply is another DAC
I will be producing a text version of this in the future. I’m aware that there’s plenty of text fans out there. Any updates will be placed in there too. Thanks for your comment though.
@@TheAudiophileMan my problem is that i'm not english motherrtongue, and my english knoweledge grade isn't enought good for tech terms. With a text i can use a dictionary or a translation site :)
Hello, tell me - does it make sense to connect a linear power supply unit, will the changes in the sound be noticeable? or does it make any difference if you connect it to the charger from the phone?
any updates on this...It has been happening with my unit (+laptop /usb/RCA) roughly once or twice in a night of listening. Even being OCD I could live with this...tonight it's happening every 5 minutes....now it's driving me nuts...any ideas? suggestions? advice?
I have an issue with my E30 where it locks up and has to be reset. Only happens once in a blue moon but Topping are sending me a new one from China. I use the Coax input from my CD player (Marantz CD6007) occasionally but prefer the sound direct from the CD Player to my amp, but must say the coax has never given me any issues. I mainly use it for USB. When the new one arrives I'll try the coax again as this should have the Cirrus Logic input chip like D50s. I'll let you know how I get on.
Could it be a particular run of the cirrus chip? I just recently purchased the D50s and haven't experienced the problem or any problem for that matter. Another thought occurred to me. The first time around you reseated the plug on the dac end. When you replaced the cable then used cable 1 again you reseated the cable on both ends.
Well I found this video very satisfactory as you did the best you could do. Thank you for your time, trouble and posting your findings. The question is which CD Transport did you use? I did advise previously of having this issue using the Audiolab CDT6000 Transport. I have just checked on the internet and my Denon Amplifier uses a different DAC Chip to the Topping. I did not swap the coaxial. I will try another and see. Could the issue be with the Transport. Since I mentioned the issue to you a few weeks ago, I did see that on a Amazon UK Audiolab Purchaser had the drop out issue too in 2019. So, including myself and the two other users online all having the issue in 2018, 2019 and 2021, it is not a batch issue. If you used the CDT6000, it could be that, or it could be both the Transport or the DAC. Strange. Who knows as there are so many different variables.
From my understanding it is the high demands of the new Cirrus logic spdif implementation used by Topping instead of the AKM chip in their older Dac models (AKM factory fire) that this CS 8416 CHIP is very picky especially with CD Player's that produce high jitter over spdif that this chip has problem 'locking' on to the signal or the signal is too low from the source. Topping have now put notices on some forums and Amazon that certain dacs should not be used with CD players due to this chip.
So, either don't use the Coaxial input or use better cables = better connection? Strange Problem Solved. Likely the language issue of "cannot resolve the issue" is a matter of Chinese to English translation. Nope, replace the cable. Replace the CD Transport. Argh! Will this go on forever!
Wonder if it was burn in time that had slightly changed something electrically back into spec and made it trouble free ?? Hmmm as long as it works :- ) Nice vid and explanation .
I mean I'm pretty sure unless they intentionally stress test and wear it in.. audio will get better as the headphones get more used to things.. it's basically just the headphone components loosening up
Using a Denon with usb connection and every 20 min unit will drop out and have to restart unit to work again definitely an issue with this unit. Guaranteed!
@@TheAudiophileMan My 4 month old Topping E30 Dac was Dropping out on coax 1 & 2 Times a track I have just bought a used D50s and 5 tracks in no dropping out at all we will see a few CDs Later ??
Enjoyed the video, I think we can all share similar experiences. Very good of you ‘take it to the next level’ several times. 🙂 Did you ever get back to the distributor to let them know your experience?
O think its a little unfair to topping. I had the same issue when connecting my tv to my audiolab 8200 with optical. The optical worked normaly with other sources though.
You certainly have had a disappointing experience! I am lucky that I've never had any problems with my D50s/A50s stack, though I only use the USB and BT connections. In my particular use case I highly recommend the D50s, but based on your experience I might be much more hesitant to recommend it if coax is required.
thx man but i don't know what the hell your talking about...my d50s us working just fine....to say you don't think it's a dac we should buy?and after the problem was related to time or cable issues? i dont know....i had like 8 dacs this one sounds great.but thx for your review.
hi justin do you think i can hear sound difference's between coax cables ? assuming they work with no issues....i really wonder. and does optical cable sounds better or worse? thx
@@גדאור-ג7ע I found coaxial cables to sound more dynamic with a bigger wider soundstage than optical. The better the cable the bigger the increase of detail and tonality
That's a bit...extreme. I ate a less than tasty orange yesterday (it was rather bitter) but I'm not going to ban the fruit from my life :) I would take each case on its own merits. All HiFi is subject to tech issue, no matter where it comes from.
@@TheAudiophileMan 😂hope that you don't take it wrongly, I noticed my statement could be interpreted wrongly if not careful. You still have a nice voice I like listening to.
