When topsy says he hasn't slept in 50 years. That isn't necessarily meant literally as if it was. He'd be long dead. More likely it, means he hasn't slept WELL in 50 years. Be it only being able to sleep a few hours before instinctively waking up to make sure he wasn't killed, or having consistent nightmares
my grandfather has the same experience from the front lines in vietnam. he can't sleep more than 3 hours at a time and will almost swerve off the road at the sound of any motorcycle noise resembling helicopter blades
Could also be that he doesn't know he's sleeping either. When you skip on regular sleep your body does these Micronaps for seconds or minutes instead that you just aren't aware of.
Yeah my dad says he doesn't sleep but I find him snoring all the time. Despite that he's always sleep-deprived; sleeping doesn't necessarily mean resting.
That always made me laugh since it first aired. I finally visited the Alamo for the first time ever back in '21. The only souvenir I got was a coon skin cap. Didn't even fit. Worth it.
I feel like, eventually, you’re going to run out of characters, so you’ll end up having to do a big-ass deconstruction of Hank Hill himself as a grand series finale.
Hopefully he doesnt run out of characters before the revival starts to air, they announced it at the start of 2023 and did a bunch of the recording work in the first half of 2023 so I'd imagine the new episodes will be airing later this year.
@@rkhale02 actually cotton did serve in the Italian front before being shipped out to the pacific theater, remembering his “victory drink” after the battle of Anzio, and even having Sardinia on the list of battles he fought in, so yeah cotton did kill a nazi or two in his time.
He found "Hitler's" canoe and kept it as a trophy. He most likely killed Nazis. Because even if it wasn't Hitler's canoe it still had the iron cross on it and a swastika so it definitely belonged to a Nazi soldier. Not to mention his right-hand man Topsy choked out top SS commanders. They were companions during the war so he def killed Nazis. Also the rest of his comrades took items from famous SS commanders.
thats one thing i always found kind of wild IRL about WW2 veterans. You meet some shaky old man who's 5'6" and weigh as much as a sack of yarn and then find out he gutted 5 men with a potato peeler on some nameless Pacific island 40 years before you were born.
Is it a friend or a loyal soldier. Topsy seems like a capable, loyal and dedicated soldier (possibly outranked by Cotton), while Cotton just threw his authority around.
Ain’t to surprising, even Hanks own friends respect cotton, probably cause they didn’t live with him or had a skewed perspective on there respect for him
When topsy says he hasnt slept in years i feel like him napping on a couch isnt the same as trying to sleep at night though. When he sleeps at night he probably is haunted but when he falls asleep in a chair irs probably dreamless.
As someone who is legally blind it's my favorite line as well. Cotton is my favorite character. As a cartoon character he is hilarious. If he was a real person he would be horrible to be around.😅
Topsy kinda feels like Cotton's Boomhauer, with the indistinct talking. Five bucks says Topsy is "legally blind" because he puffed up his cheeks uncooperatively, either blocking part of his vision or spooking the eye doctor.
@conspiracyspider Possibly but Bill is a softie, a little bit incompetent, a little bit jealous over Peggy. Likelier one, if not all, of the "Fattys" takes that one.
I believe Sardinia was also an air battle. However, Cotton himself says he was in Italy before being shipped out to the Pacific in his first appearance.
@@ianfinrir8724 the closest I can see for historical accuracy is that the british did a couple of commando raids, in addition to a whole lot of bombing raids by a variety of air forces. Cotton was neither an airman nor a brit (and would headbutt you for the suggestion). Pretty sure he was infantry unless I missed something. (am open to being corrected.) -- didn't know cotton said he was in italy, but if he was, Sardinia seems incredibly unlikely. Also I think it'd be silly to redeploy folks from Europe to japan when Germany was the focus. Not saying it's impossible, but I think it's Cotton's uhh... creative interpretation of his war record speaking there. Now I'm curious if they did redeploy any infantry from Europe to the Pacific in '43.
@@ianfinrir8724Probably Operation Husky the invasion of Sicily, probably where he met some of the “Brooklyns” as it was largely an Italian and Jewish neighborhood and Italian speakers were needed for that operation.
Topsy feels like he might be related to boomhaur. Idk if its the way he talks without his teeth, or what. But something has me suspicious Edit: Robin Williams would've made a hilarious Topsy
When I was a kid something that always bugged me about the Yankee Hankee episode is how they both accurately and inaccurately portrayed the layout of the Alamo. Like there is no fence surrounding it, it’s a wide open area with shops and hotels surrounding it. The flags that represent all the defenders that Hank sees is actually there. Also they did include the White Cenotaph monument that’s in front of the Alamo
Bagels are one of those random things Hank thinks is unmanly, unnatural, or just wrong (most likely a belief passed on by Cotton, like most things he regards this way.)
As a die-hard Yankees fan, I could only dream of my son being born on those sacred grounds. P.S. Hank was born. In OLD Yankee Stadium. The house that Ruth built. Not this new sushi and soup selling Yankee Stadium.
Same. I watched it when nothing else was on back then, but the older I get, the more I appreciate how good it actually is. These videos on this channel put it all together so well, I definitely need to rewatch it.
I always wondered If Topsey had blowers disease. I have never seen anyone be able to puff up their cheeks besides him and glassblowers that did It for many years. Of course It could just be because he's a cartoon and they thought It would be funny xD
Ah Topsy. He was quite a character. I really like you looking at the various characters of King of the Hill. You do a great job talking about them, no matter how small of a part they might have played in the show, and highlighting their major appearances. Keep up the great work man, I hope you’re doing well, have a great day and a great weekend. Take care!
Legally Blind doesnt mean he is blind. It means he sees bad enough to qualify for all the state accommodations for blind people. Im nearly legally blind and with very very thick glasses i can see fine.
Hank was never born in New York and Bill never stole a tank. Those were vivid dreams you had after you ate at that rotating Belgian restaurant in Macmaynerberry 🤷♂️
"Topsy" is fairly rare as a first name, and from what I can tell, it's typically a _woman's_ name, so I'm betting it's just a name Cotton and the boys gave him during the war; perhaps during boot camp, when Uncle Sam took all their first names to burn for heat or to grind down to bulk up ration sausages. It's _probably_ just a play on "Toppington"... but it's not _impossible_ there's some kind of story behind it. And yeah, while Topsy's definitely toothless, I think saying he was mostly blind was just a ploy in that moment to trick Bobby into sticking his face into Topsy's face, so the "pufferfish routine" would be more shocking.
So two quick things, trumpet players tend to have distended cheeks like that and the reason everyone thinks that edison was responsible for Topsy is the fact that his name is plastered all over the film depicting the execution. Also his engineers set up the device.
On WW2 vets vs Vietnam vets, I recently heard an interesting point about how a big difference between the experiences came in how they returned home. Most WW2 guys had to ride home on ships for a few days and that gave them time to talk to those that just saw the same things and understood what they all went through. Vietnam vets seem to mostly have been grouped with random soldiers and flown home with a day or two, leaving them no chance to reconcile or decompress from their experiences
True, also take in mind, any trauma a WW2 soldier would have still felt was probably not dealt with in therapy as it was not common and existed as well in the US as it would have been possible back in the 60s and 70s. Hell, the medical community only discovered "Shell Shock" existed during the 1950s given mostly to those serving in the Korean War.
I always thought Topsy was at one point a musician or glass blower via the blowers disease but it does show him with that blow gun so my theory is his specialty was blowdart assassinations 😅
Considering he's bestest buddies with Cotton, Topsy probably also has a predilection for exaggerating his service and was probably just a trumpet player in the Army band.
I wanna hear about Clark Peters eventually! You do such an amazing job at these videos I can't help but want to see all the sideline characters get a spotlight.
This relationship between Topsy and Cotton brings tears to my eyes. My uncle has his own Topsy, named "Squeaky" minus Topsy's quirks 😂. But just to see the brotherhood they've had since fighting side by side is really heartwarming. Squeaky has always been a part of our family for as long as I can remember ❤.
Hey love your videos, big KOTH fan and my wife and I have been loving your videos. I wanted to throw my two cents at the Topsy date of death. I work in prime time animation and I think it was probably production time for the episodes that explains the date of Topsy's death. They probably wrote Dale tech in 2001 or even decided that Topsy was dead in the writers room sometime in 2001, so that was what they recorded as his death. The episode "Dale Tech" came out in early 2004, and it was probably in actual production (storyboards, design, animation etc) during 2003 or even 2002. Animated shows like KOTH can take up to 9 months or longer to produce, and that's not even factoring the network holding episodes and releasing them whenever they feel like it. I don't know sure but that's my best guess. Can't wait to see what video is next!
My best friends brother in law was a vet and unalived himself 🔫. He put in over 8 years and they cut his benefits. He was $100,000 in debt, had 2 daughters,a wife, then the vet hospital wouldnt give him meds for his chronic pain.(he didn't abuse drugs. He completed his time in the army.) He one day just gave up. Went upstairs to his bathroom. Said he was gonna take a bath. Hours later his wife discovered him on the toilet with a hole in his chest.. He gave his reasons in the note...😢 Then the insurance company tried to get out of paying the life insurance. Till this day his wife(my friend's sister) said she rather be in debt, living check to check, then go another day aithout him. But she has children and can't give up.😭
I take tipsy saying he hasn't slept in 50 yrs to mean he hasn't had good rem sleep in 50 yrs. Being someone with PTSD I sleep but I never get much of any rem sleep as the nightmares and flashbacks drag you out of it. There's a huge difference between testing your eyes and rem sleep
Just wanted to let you know: Legally blind doesn’t actually mean blind. When you’re “legally” blind, your vision is at a point where you’re legally not allowed to drive.
I did not know anything about the elephant stuff before hand. I feel like with each new sentence the concern on my face just kept growing. I have barely gotten past that when writing my comment so I cannot imagine how the rest of this video will go. I never watched all of KOTH, only a couple episodes here and there because my dad didn't like it and made me change the TV when it was on when I was a kid. As an adult I'm thinking about giving it a full rewatch, but for now your videos are some of my favorites to listen to. I even showed my boyfriend your channel since he likes KOTH too 😊😊
Just like Hank said while dumping Cotton’s ashes down Pattons toilet “he may have killed fiddy men but he certainly didn’t do it alone, Topsy and the others meant a lot to Cotton just like the Dale, Bill, and Boomhauer mean a lot to Hank.” 🥲
it was the last couple seasons and let's be real - not many WW2 vets sticking around after 2010 - part of why the world is in the state it is - the lessons have been forgotten and the mistakes will be made again
@howilearned2stopworrying508 not many middle schoolers in 1998 were still in middle school in 2010 either, the floating timeline, makes it very easy for them to keep both those guys, for like only 2 years or so to pass In the show, for fatty, Topsy, stinky, cotton, and Irwin linker to all die is very suspicious.
Halfway through the video, Cotton calls him "Toppington" which is apparently his last name... Makes sense since in the service, people tend to go by their last name.
Nice call back to Bob's burgers. When you started talking about the elephant thing I was like where have I heard that before? And then the Bob's burgers clip came up it was perfect timing
