I've always loved Todd Terry's music. When I dj, I still throw them on and they still cause hell with my listeners. One day I was in Sheepshead Bay on Homecrest Avenue and was introduced to Todd by a friend who lived in the building. He tells me, This is Todd, He's a dj too. Sure, he didn't tell me he was Todd Terry. I would have shit myself and would have come back with my 12 inch singles to ask him to autograph them. Good old days of Todd Terry house music. Today's music is shit.

5:02 Actually a few months ago a whosampled user (onyxclockwork) found that the correct source for the Snap! track is “Frankie Bones & Lenny Dee - Pumper Piper Beats” (1989) This track combines the mantronix drums with the stab from Ashley’s Roachclip, both of which are looped the same way in The Power.

@@franklinbruce7121 It's true! I was born in 76 and have an older brother, so I still got to experience some of the carry over from those decades. At 13 years old I was buying underground records that were being played at the clubs. I would listen to them, close my eyes, and imagine what it was like inside the clubs. Great times :)

The talk from Brooklyn in the 80s was the releases from Frankie Bones and Todd Terry. Would like to know if there was a rivalry given they would both be on 4th Floor records. Thank you for the this video...great work!🇵🇷
@AgentOrangeTheDJ
@AgentOrangeTheDJ 3 года назад
Thanks glad you liked it! A lot of people copied and/or were heavily influenced by Todd's style and sounds in the 80s and I'd say Bones was def one of them (honestly we all were). Frankie's own style came into it's own a bit later, like 1990 and after, with the rave/techno sound. But they could probably tell the story better than me, I was only 12 at the time haha but still obsessed with dance music.

he's saying he didn't use a sequencer. But he did, it's called a drum machine. The Casio has a sequencer, and it driver the sampler. Marley Marl did the same stuff back in the day. also the korg has a sequencer
@AgentOrangeTheDJ
@AgentOrangeTheDJ 2 года назад
Hey David, good insight and glad you watched the video. I think what he was saying was that he sequenced the beats with the drum machine but he triggered a a lot of the main samples by hand.
@dpalaoro
@dpalaoro 2 года назад
@@AgentOrangeTheDJ Marley Marl and others were doing the same stuff. They used a drum machine to trigger the sampler. This is before the common use of midi. It's done with triggers. And the Korg DD-2000 has them. The RZ1 let's you either: step in your events, or play them in realtime. I'm sure he triggered the samples recording the events into the casio in realtime. So, yeah, he technically played them by hand. :) But he didn't play the sample by hand through out the whole track. lol He played them in for 4 bars or whatever, and then edited or looped, or lengthened the sequence. Much like we do today! But course, he recorded to tape too, and edited, much like we don't do today. haha. thank god!
@AgentOrangeTheDJ
@AgentOrangeTheDJ 2 года назад
@@dpalaoro From my understanding, he did play some the main samples in by hand in live takes and overdubs. Of course quantized to grid. Then they would tape edit the parts together as you say. I miss tape editing, it was fun! A pain in the arse too though haha.
@AgentOrangeTheDJ
@AgentOrangeTheDJ 2 года назад
Marly Marl yes - first to use drum samples and not drum machine in rap music to my knowledge - Queens Bridge!
@dpalaoro
@dpalaoro 2 года назад
@@AgentOrangeTheDJ I agree, he played them into the sequencer, but I bet he didn't quantize them necessarily. You get that looseness playing into the sequencer with the quantize off, depending on the situation

Amazing video. Thanks so much for putting this deep dive together and for the interview with Todd. Great stuff. I was wondering if you might know the source of the main riff of Black Riot's 'A Day in the life" later sampled in "This Is Acid ( A New Dance Craze )" by Maurice. The sample riff begins at 0:07 I've always had a deep appreciation for this sound. Thanks for any help! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4weBQ98obuc.html
