You still need to cover the the parapet wall with a “non-combustible material” the minimum of the width of the parapet well. You can’t just leave the asphalt exposed like that on the top of the parapet wall per code.

Problems: 1. The top gloss clay to tar connection will delaminate and leak within 1 year. The bottom tar seal will hold the water in. 2. The tar over inside parapet wall will damage the masonry through freeze/thaw cycle and allow water to flow over the entire inside wall. Solution: Proper parapet wall cap with clean drip edge on both sides.

Thanks to "no alcohol" and "no smoking" and "no drugs" and "no medications" all my life. I took a few antibiotics here and there but never the full course as the doctor prescribed. Then thank God for health. I believe He controls everything anyway. That's why I have work, that's why I have health, that's why I have hope. I am allowed all these things so I can serve Him. Praise God

Why wouldn’t you just take the coping stone off and put a new wood nailer on with new coping metal ?
@FlatRoofDoctor
@FlatRoofDoctor 5 лет назад
I did mention that too in one of the comments that there are other ways to go about it. What you just described to do would take 3 times longer and 3 times the cost. You suppose my bid would be competitive in landing the job if I had to include the work you describe? I was $3000 higher than the next bid already. It's all to do with pricing. This is a commercial building and he just doesn't want it to leak. I even went over an old wrinkled build-up roof. Just my thought on why I do what I do
@cbreezyb7299

Hi, Naas How would you have done this if the property owner didn't want the caps cut? Is there another method of doing the repair?
@FlatRoofDoctor
@FlatRoofDoctor 5 лет назад
Andrew Beaudry I have done repairs before with the ribs in place but it’s a bad idea. The next idea would be to remove the caps completely. Clean the wall from all the junk that people have added below the cap. Bring the membrane up and over the wall, then install new cap. Either with terra-cotta or metal. A lot of work. Also, if below the cap is not bad, meaning there is no tar and stuff. Then bring the membrane right up to the cap underneath. That’s how it’s suppose to be.
@FlatRoofDoctor
@FlatRoofDoctor 5 лет назад
Hi Sure, you can have metal caps fabricated that covers everything. The way I demonstrate is the most effective and cost-effective solution. Someone else might have some other ideas. If anyone got ideas for this solution, please comment here.

what has safety to do with "the worst transition" You maybe the worst comment writer. Why dont you rather explain what is so bad so everyone can learn . Just a negative comment doe not help anyone. If you want to talk about safety, then let us hear about it. Put the shoe on if it fits. Be constructive. You must be working for someone. If you work for yourself then you will be different.

Just because you learned from a book or a Union, doesn't mean that's the only way. BTW, your dog must have a big house, I can hardly imagine.

So you're saying 3ft., starting at the far side of the top of wall down onto the horizontal roof surface or just enough to overlap the turn up on the wall.

Do you think this is a quality repair or no or should I use just Hot Tar
@FlatRoofDoctor
@FlatRoofDoctor 5 лет назад
Ok I am trying to think what you mean by "Hot tar" I have never worked with "Hot tar" and I am no expert in that. Hot Tar is bitumen that comes in a solid form that is then heated up in a kettle to become liquid. Now to get to your question. It depends on what you want to repair and big the project is. If it entails an Old Hot Tar roof, then it's better to use hot tar if you can find someone with a kettle. I use Modified Bitumen Adhesives for many of my repairs along with a membrane. That is something like a cold tar in a bucket. Karnak 81 Trowel grade is the best for many repairs. Never use Henry, Bull Dog or other cheap brands of tar you can buy at Lowes or Home Depot. By the way, Home Depot started to carry Karnak 66 Trowel Grade. An excellent product.

@@happydays454 My advice - That roof can't be fixed. Install a Two-Ply Modified Bitumen Torch Down directly over the gravel and all. Without seeing it, I can do it for $8 K. A good price would be between $4 - $5 k I am getting married soon, maybe I'll stop by on my way to Grand Canyon and do it for you. Just kidding. I hope all the best for you. What you could do in the meantime is to scrape the gravel away where the cracks are, use a leaf blower to blow the dust off, then use Karnak 66 brush Grade and pour it all over the cracks. Use a brush to work it in too. That might get you by for a long time.
