Challenge Rules:
- I can only use my starter in battle.
- No items in trainer battles except held items.
- No glitches, exploits, or RNG manipulations.
First playthrough:
- No Double Team, Substitute until level 100
- 0 IVs across the board
- Cheating for information is acceptable as a last resort
Second Playthrough:
- All bets are off. Complete the game as fast as possible
- Max 31 IVs unless pursuing Hidden Power
- I will be playing these runs at 4x game speed
My footage will be edited to give what I consider a better viewing experience. This includes making cuts, fades, and adjusting the speed of the footage to match my commentary.
I use a software called "PKHeX" to edit my starter, setting things like it's Nature, and IVs to be perfect 31s, or marginally reduced to give specific Hidden Power typing to optimize strategy. All of the Pokémon I use are 100% attainable in the base game. The software allows me to create my "perfect" egg Pokémon in a much shorter timeframe.
PKHeX also allows me to set my Pokédex total to max after the Round 1 Elite 4. A requirement of Round 2 is catching 60 species and I am only interested in the potential of the Pokémon that I'm running instead of my ability to catch Pokémon optimally.

I've always found Headbutt very satisfying. Doesn't even have to STAB. Nothing flashy, just wham, head to the face!

Flamethrower, because I started in Gen1 and Charizard learned it so late. Edit to add: Typhlosion was even worse in Gen2, but at least Fire Punch could fill in the gap.

@@travisalexander6440 I almost got stuck on the always critical "Slash" on my Charizards back in Gen 1 :) Blastoise was the fave - but Venusaur had Razor Leaf and Charizard had Slash. Oh the hit crit of Gen 1. But Flamethrower absolutely roasts. Love it!

What a run! This run was quite the kick! It's such a shame the physical/special split isn't until next generation, which would make the spicy chicken able to take an adamant or jolly nature. Can't wait for next versus battle, they're all REALLY interesting matches, but i want the battle of the powerhouses!

Amazing eggsceptional! Blaziken already has great coverage plus you are a specialist in the game, all these combined made this challenge a cakewalk! I gotta say, I love the way you lead the game! It's so impressive how different the second run always tends to be in comparison to the first one! I really like Blaziken but it's a pity that it's kind of a glass Cannon! But even so you did an amazing job with Blaziken! Honestly, FireRed is a quite interesting game, with all the possibilities it gives to the Pokemon for moves to learn! I understand why you like FireRed so so much! "I've been liking more and more and more, as much as I 've been watching your runs! Bye and thank you!

@@andersonantunesdeleu8591 No kidding! Substitute is great. Honestly most of the time it's just guarding my speed. Most solo Pokémon have a brutal time after getting hit by even 1 Rock Tomb. Plus, I love it :D

@@Eggsceptional man I love it too! Actually since gen 1 I am a fan of substitute. For fast Pokemon, not being able to get poisoned or paralysed, man that's super! I think that's my favorite move, hehe!

I have the exact same feelings as you regarding your Brick Break comment. When I was younger I would use it at basically any opportunity I could because it just felt like the absolute best move. Especially when it actually does break through a screen!

What a blazingly fast run compered to last week's run.😊 Having a set up move that rasing your stats both offensively and defensively is really good, and also Blaziken's typing is really unique for this gen ,and it synergies well with the fire type. 😁 I'm glad that a fire type had a great time in Kanto. And sd and sub strats were really best strats, because gen 3 loves status so bad😂😂😂. By the way all of the versus videos ideas sounds good to me so I would love to see all of them eventually. And also I really like the color scheme in the thumbnails , truly an eggseptional work. Keep it up😊

It was a totally different feeling. I quite enjoyed the 0 IV run it's making for better routing ideas in the second runs. Honestly most of the struggles of Fire Pokémon Blaziken has an answer for. It was such a fun one to blaze through the game with :) Sub strats best strats. It's tried and true. Except Alakazam...

Nice to see a gd sweep for the elite 4, sub+SD =ggwp. Well there are some tips i could offer to maybe improve the overall time by a bit 1) if not running forTM 10, consider catching a spearow instead of your usual meowth+pidgey hm mule, u can easily route by trading for dux just before badge3 and grabbing the bike voucher :) 2) personally i prefer a big shopping spree in celedon mart, so from my own experience shopping for 10 repels at cerulean/vermillion will be more than enough to last through rock tunnel+pkmn tower, where u can buy 20 super repels at the dept store to last through the entire game. As for dig wise, escape rope does it so much faster imo, 7-8 escape ropes should be enough to last the game as well. 3) this i am not too sure but consider maybe modifying the pokedex early at start of the game to grab the leftovers? U can opt not to use it (i personally just grab and start to use it, perhaps that makes the game too ez for me but oh well). Looking forward to the versus video, my money is on crawdaunt winning. Kingler sadly has poor stat balance in terms of gen 3 physical/special moves, if only we can compete them in gen4 format.

Stomping through the game with Blaziken was a blast :D I have considered grabbing Ch'ding on my runs but I enjoy Meowth for a second reason. Dig. Dig saves so much time, and I suppose money because of Escape Ropes. I could work around it I suppose. But Dig is so handy. You read my mind with the Dig. I was trying to guesstimate the number of Ropes needed and I feel like that 7-8 mark would suffice. I'll have to test more, because catching a Spearow on Route 9 would be way easier. I prefer the Max Repels honestly. They aren't as effective money wise, but the 250 limit has been working for my routing. Perhaps that's the next bit to optimize :P There's SO MUCH!!! Concerning Leftovers I save them for Round 2 because unless I'm willing to invest the time to catch Pokémon in Round 1 I feel they should be gated. I want to keep things as "vanilla" as possible after all. Grabbing them for Round 2 is only because I need the catches for the National Dex to unlock R2. Otherwise they'd be locked behind the catches still. I feel like powerful items shouldn't be free from the beginning :P Remember in my VS videos I start with an egg move. Kingler is going to do quite well I feel :) But so is Crawdaunt... It'll be a fun one! Thanks for the tips :)

Man Blaziken rip through Kanto just like I thought it would this was an awesome run!! can't wait to see how Swampert does and curious to see how you deal with Erika and the Rival's Venusaur( and the double intimidate that comes with that team). Good luck with Red in SS Also if you plan to set the date to remove the hail in the area you fight Red in, the dates for HGSS are Feb.29th, March 15th, Oct.10th, and Dec. 31st

Blaziken was a blast. I was worried about Swampert not having a set up move.. I worried in vain. Those are such specific dates. I've got them jotted down now thank you. I'll try the Red fight without it, buuuut I'll probably set the system to one of those dates eventually :P Thank you!

@@Eggsceptional no problem! Honestly Red in the hail isn’t that bad as people make it out to be, in fact the hail chip can net you KOs on his Pokémon sometimes. I just know some people prefer that the hail not be there to make the battle more consistent on their end/hope that blizzard on one of his 3 Pokémon misses. Looking forward to the Swampert vid and the next Vs vid

Though I used Treecko the first time I played Ruby, my favorite of the three starters was definitely Torchic. For the vs stuff, let's go Grumpig! Dude was a solid sp. def wall for me when I used to do competitive on Smogon.

So glad I’m here. Less of an egg more of a chicken fun fact. There is a sprite difference between male and female torchic. A small pixel on the butt is a different color as a reference to how they do that to actual chickens!

Eggcellent sir. truly Eggcellent. that 1st playthrough was particularly surprising, even with 0 IV's it had a made a rather good run, but I guess thats the power of the a boosting move, the lack of speed was truly its downfall for that one, but again no surprise, even with IV's and a decent nature, it is not the fastest. I was not shocked in the slightest you went with the full physical for the 2nd run though, as you said the EV's are so much more plentiful as are speed EV's, I'm just surprised you kept the fire STAB as long as you did once you were fast Erika and it wasn't quite as needed. one thing that I am curious of for both runs though, you went with Swords Dance in the R2 for both runs and replaced Bulk Up, I'm curious as to why, I would of considered it much useful for R2 Lance, his high attack Pokemon and habit of using dragon dance would of countered quite effectively as you'd be safe to set up especially behind a substitute and resist a faster harder hitting physical attack, earthquake from Gyrarados or hyper beam from any of them would really hurt after a DD or 2. rest of your moveset, I'm not surprised by, we all know what you like and what works best for the fire red runs, especially with a boosting move. I love the looks of the VS you got lined up, the Tentacruel VS Quilfish will be superb to see. I see a few we talked about a long time ago, the "other" psychics will be great as well, that is the perfect title for that. I vote Tentacruel VS quilfish, you know I love my poison types and both of them were so good in my poison team runs, solo though, hard to call. its gonna be good, I want all of them though, all look good

It's true I did want to transition to that full physical set, but Blaze Kick remained useful for a quite a while to be honest. Replacing it with Return made sense once Return was powered up, but my friendship wasn't quite there. GameHook is amazing :P I think it's around 175 friendship that Return surpasses Secret Power in damage. That's always my benchmark anyway. The second playthrough was great fun. Using the early Rare Candies is something I always love pulling off. It's true. I do enjoy bonking the game as hard as I possibly can :D I went with SD because then I could boost higher, faster. It made set up against Heracross easier too because if he went for Earthquake too much until I was set up to +4 ish it would break the decoy. Am I remembering that right? Anyway... I agree with the Def boost being useful. I feel like a slower 'mon would definitely benefit more from Bulk Up than Swords Dance. Blaziken could just go first most of the time... in the second run anyway. I absolutely know you and your love for Poison types. Sorry I had to exclude that one from the poll.. darn limit of 4. It's one that has been getting a little dusty on the list, well both are. Eventually I do want to run 'em all.

Blaziken is that starter I want to like but is so outclassed by another of the trio it is hard to justify taking. Even once it got Speed Boost, it suffered from success by getting banned to Ubers.

Yeesh! Blaziken definitely struggled alot more then I would have thought it has a really good typing for this region but I guess it also has alot of hard counters! I think Swampert will clear the other 2 easily with stab earthquake & surf there won't be much of anything that will be able to stand in its way!

That 0 IV run is sure instructive to what's lacking. Even at base 80 speed I was so shocked at how many battles we were slower in. But the second playthrough was a rip :) I was worried about Swampert not having a set up move.. I worried in vain. Thanks!

@@Eggsceptional I have to say that's precisely the reason I'm disliking the 0 IV thing. You don't outspeed anything and don't hit any nice damage ranges, it just turns everything into survival mode. The second runs I still love watching though, but I'm not sure if I'll come around on the initial struggle of it all tbh

@@rikaniebangbang If it helps I've been enjoying them for 2 reasons: 1) The first runs are always just about information anyway, and any flaws a Pokémon may have are definitely revealed. Then routing the second becomes easier. If my Def was no problem in the 1st run then I know I can safely take a -Def +Speed nature for instance. 2) Anyone can grab a Torchic and have a better run than that. But it presents a nice guideline of what to look out for. Of course if you don't like it, you don't like it. I want to stick with it a little while longer to really explore the format. I'm happy to keep the conversation open moving forward :) Thanks for your input!

Don’t underestimate focus energy. Some Pokémon don’t get a boosting move and only get focus energy. Basically a guaranteed crit if you also get slash

Focus energy still kind of sucks in this game even with a high crit move, it is only from gen4 onwards where the crit modifier is slightly reworked to make crit starts viable

Well less is changed for hitmonlee since his move pool is a little bit more uptight. Never could get a hitmontop so I can't really tell you any difference for him. But Champ and Chan get a whole lot more reliable coverage.

I'm curious how setting your IVs to all 0's in the first run effects your planning for the second run? Does it make it easier, or harder, or does it just not make much of a difference?

I'm still eggsperimenting with the format. So far I'd say it feels like if there's going to be a problem in the run - the 0 IV run will reveal it. Also it's been tickling my brain in a new way with Natures. If in my run with 0 IVs my Def was adequate, I can more easily judge a -Def nature for the second run. It's been really interesting to explore it so far. It's new. There's always growing pains :)

Huh.. Didn't catch that one. Well a least it's still a fun rivalry thematically :P Thanks for pointing it out! Edit: OK, phew. I had to go back and look this up. Crawdaunt does learn SD at 43, and is in the Fluctuating growth rate group. I think it's still a contender :)

@@chefgrizz6284 I'm not currently on any other platforms. I've been thinking about it a lot and I really have never been one for social media. Ironically enough, as a creator now. It continues to be on my mind, with my primary thoughts about being setting up a Discord. WIP :)
