Northern Lad!!! These suggestions are amazing! It's not a song I've seen anyone else suggest, but I would highly recommend "Bells for Her", but the live performance from Welcome to Sunny Florida. The original album version is quite different, so it might be fun to compare and contrast. Her live rendition hits me in the feels every time! Some other songs to try are "Siren" and "Cooling". Cooling was intended to be on two of her albums, but got cut. Surprisingly, her B sides are some of her best songs! Her performance on Sessions from West 54th is stunning. Siren is from the soundtrack for the 90s (early 2000s?) remake of Great Expectations, and it is a killer song. I would recommend the album version of Siren. While she plays and performs it beautifully, I think the recording packs more punch. Diatribe aside, thank you so much for sharing this journey with us! Keep 'em coming lol!

Thanks so much for these recommendations. I just recorded another reaction to a live performance of Crucify. Hope to get that video up soon.

I would suggest sticking to listening to the both the album version and a live performance. This album's production was next level.

Yes I agree…. While the live performances are always fantastic, listening to the studio created performance ,with the production the way she intended , is the best way to go.

The strange thing about Tori Amos is I find myself gravitating to so many of her songs in 2024. "I see the West in you, see it falling apart too" "The only sound, Moscow burning" (Josephine) "Somewhere, someone must know the ending " (Space Dog) "We go in circles, and circles again" (Cloud on My Tongue) "I know we're dying and there's no sign of a parachute, why does there have to be a sacrifice?" (iieee) "Messiahs need people dying in their name" (Pancake)

Isn't she a phenomenon? Her piano playing, composing and singing are exceptional and they tend to overshadow her writing-but how many lyricists are this *brilliant* with their word choices, their metaphors and their layered complimentary and contradictory meanings? Think of the pop lyricists who are celebrated today. How many of them write every single word (and compose and play every single note!) themselves, and then sing every word without a backup singer or pitch correction or backing tracks? How many?

I take pleasure in rewatching (my favourite) reactions to my favourite artists cause I alwas detect something I hadn't seen before or paid much attention to. When Tori went into this incredible angelic register around 10.00 your face pretty much froze as if mesmerized. When you are at a loss for words AND facial expressions that is an indication to me she hits you exactly where she does me. It is like you're the organ, the piano, the strings, the vocal chords which she strokes, strums, manipulates to extract these moments of pure beauty. Grabs me by the short and curlies every damn time. And can we get to "Hey, Jupiter" now, please? ;: Cheers, brother.

@@SaeedReacts. "Choked" on her yet like some other reactors? I am glad to share my passion for that incredible artist with you. In my mind she is literally in a class of her own. Whether rock, pop, independent, rap or whatever, no one is as expressive, inventive, imaginative, versatile, gifted and emotional as she is. My word!

You are a hero for going after a musicality and emotionality that can hardly be surpassed. It can hit you pretty hard, especially in this day and age where we often choose to represent real feelings with emotionless emojis and overblown Social Media content.

That's beautifully said about the emoji's and memes. We almost dont think about it anymore. Very surface level stuff and this music goes way beyond that.

"He moved like the sunset..." "I feel the west in you..." The west represents the end, where the sun travels to complete its journey. These lines also are likely a reference to The Lord of the Rings. Tori gave her daughter the middle name Lórien after the land Lothlórien in The Lord of the Rings, which is the land where the elves live. In the story's mythology, the elves ultimately travel west to Valinor, sort of an analogue for heaven. I sort of interpret the pair of lines in the song to mean that her Northern Lad had an enchanting effect on her, and eventually he left for something or somewhere beautiful. Basically, the song is about the end of a relationship, but it's not a typical tragic breakup song. Rather, they grew apart and the person (or deity?) she's singing about is gone and she longs for him but she knows their end was inevitable, natural, and led to a kind of beauty for him.

I never connecting this song with LOTR, but it makes total sense. It's so cool seeing all of these different interpretations!
@DavidMichaelCommer
@DavidMichaelCommer 24 дня назад
@@raspberryswirl375 Yeah, I don't think the song is *about* LOTR, but I suspect it references the mythology, just like "Precious Things" references the "precious" ring. When she seems to become possessed during some of the live performances while saying "precious, precious, precious," I think the whole thing is a reference to the corruptive power of obsession over dark, consuming forces. Her music is full of religious allegory and mythology, and that includes Tolkien-no surprise given that one of her best friends is a fantasy writer, she loves comic books, and Led Zeppelin is one of her favorite bands. 🙃
@SaeedReacts.

@@SaeedReacts. She and Neil Gaiman are so close she calls him her brother. She mentions him or his writing on almost every album, and his Sandman comic series features a talking Tori tree inspired by her. Her album Scarlet's Walk and his novel American Gods also feature intertwining themes. Both of them seem to have one foot in reality and one foot in a realm of mythologies from around the world, including religions, folklore and fantasy literature. Check out one of her early B-sides, Flying Dutchman (not the orchestral version!), and even her '80s Y Kant Tori Read song Floating City for some insights into this perspective. Her fantastical masterpiece IMO is her album Night of Hunters, which is overlooked because it is a classical album and many regarded it as boring compared with her older music. But the concept and lyrics are masterfully brilliant once a person understands them. On the surface, some aspects sound preposterous but they actually make sense once layered ideas come into focus. For example, the album includes time travel to past lives under the guidance of a shapeshifting fox-goose entity. Wacky? Well, there's a constellation called Vulpecula that has been represented at different times in history as a fox, then as a fox with a goose in its mouth, and then as just a fox again. Over time, the constellation, which looks down on us, has shapeshifted according to how it is seen. So the goofy-sounding shapeshifter is a real-world entity when conceived of in that way. In the album, the fox-goose represents the wisdom and the vulnerabilities of both predator and prey, and it teaches Tori (thr character) how to maneuver and survive her lives and relationships. Ultimately, the lesson is "you must out-create; it's the only way." The surface-level read of the album's narrative is that it chronicles the relationship of two people who "are like a pair of suns that are captured, eternally linked into chasing each others' spin, bound by beliefs that have become steel cords/chords..." but I think the album is simultaneously the chronicle of humanity's relationship with divinity. In the beginning, there's a huge bloody breakup (which closely mirrors the Sumerian proto-creation myth), and out of despair, Tori drinks a cactus concoction and is taken into a past life in which she and a romantic partner are Irish warrior poets who fought to defend their pantheon and lost to the controlling power of the Thunder God. So it's also about the old gods versus the new self-appointed and megalomaniacal Thunder God (paralleling Gaiman's American Gods again) and the power struggle among humanity for balance versus domination of one patriarchal force. Only a brilliant poet can pack all this into short songs, and this brilliant poet did so by grafting her own lyrics onto various unrelated classical music compositions. And the lesson is always to be faithful to the muses and whatever else is the source of creativity because that's the purest force we have, and it's complicated and dynamic and can't be distilled to an idea of just "good" or "bad." It's both and it's all encompassing.

If you're looking for another Tori comparison to do, I highly recommend listening to the original version of Hey Jupiter and then the remixed Hey Jupiter (The Dakota Version). For the Dakota version, definitely listen to the full recorded version. It's used in the music video but it's shortened and the extended ending is basically cut out completely. (Feel free to check out the music video after you've heard the full length though). For the original Hey Jupiter, you could definitely seek out the regular album recording but there may be someone who can recommend their preferred live version. I personally love the version she did on her Unplugged as that was the first time I ever heard the song (although I'm strugglingt to find a version of that performance where the sound isn't distorted)

Holy heck. That was epic. Btw I think the “because of the rain” line has at least two meanings. The sexual innuendo is one obvious interpretation, but another could be the absence of blood sweat and tears because they’re not feeling it anymore. 🤷‍♂️

You are reallly hitting some deep cuts, it wouldn't have been one I'd think to suggest, but it's such a beautifully heartbreaking song, those lyrics stay with you, they pop in my head out of nowhere from time to time. I think some people have suggested some here and there, but some of Tori's best songs aren't even from the albums, many of her b-sides are personal favorites of mine, to name just a few; Flying Dutchman- probably my favorite song of hers, you must listen to the version from Little Earthquakes Deluxe Edition, which remastered and restored it from an earlier disastrous remaster, and no live version could duplicate the orchestration of the original. I'll put in a link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XQ-aNtnDwxI.htmlsi=TWLFraygE4wNn16F Take To the Sky Upside Down Here In My Head Thoughts Song For Eric Ode To the Banana King(Pt.
