Why Tori is the fucking best. Knew it in the 90s...still true today. How do eyes not water when ears hear this song? Love you Tori ! You've been there for me all my adult life.
After this album, it's gonna be hard to find anything that can compare to it's artistry. I thought I knew depth, musicality, lyricism and raw musical emotion - after Scarlet's Walk, I feel like the saying says: "A man who knows something, knows that he knows nothing at all".
I just had to buy my second copy of Scarlet's Walk cause my old one was so shagged out from being played and played. When I got it home I had to play this first. It's masterful. It kinda encapsulates everything I love about Tori's music. The playing, the lyric, the whole mood of "Virginia" is so quintessentially Tori.
Just mesmerizing! I love this song, the way it is written--it could be 'America' herself, personified as an ancient, mysterious but lost Undine--forgetting her history, being used and abused by her abusive, ignorant human masters. Musically, it is like a siren song.
Sigh... My mother is decended from the Shawnee people of the Ohio valleys (though i am the image of my Irish father) and this song has always touched me on a deep personal level. Thank you Tori, and Thank you poster.
Maybe it would have more of an effect on me if I were American, but even so, this song always strikes me as something with a very deep kind of sadness to it. The very idea of "What you would tell somebody who was deprived of their identity by lots of exploitation when they were still young and innocent" hits me the strongest, I guess, but the whole lost civilization thing is deeply sad, too. Those easternmost states that were settled first... what did the indigenous people even call them?
i know shit about music but the riff at 1:50 def reminds me of "where is my mind" by the pixies... also both songs deal with the theme of being mentally lost somehow
The TV show was "musicplanet2night", and Arte (a german and french tv channel". The show was recorded on a small parisian theater called "The Reservoir". Her, you can find all the songs sang during this short performance: www.yessaid.com/int/2002-10-02_Music_Planet_2Night.html
I guess loss of identity, be it personal or cultural (the latter being something I don't really understand, comming from a very mixed background and growing up in Germany, where any sort of old culture has been killed dead by its association with a certain nutjob) is always a very sad thing, *especially* when the person themselves doesn't even notice anymore...
@dangpet --- i also love her live version of "cooling" and "garlands" is another breath taking song.....but my ultimate fave is "hey jupiter" the dakota version truely a masterpiece !!!!
my first concert by her she didn't have the band (I was a little let down cause I wanted to hear all of "She's Your Cocain") ... I like it when it's split. Some songs need the extra support and engery she gets from her band mates. I'm glad she does both.
@spinyopaat ...welcome to the wonderful world of being an 'ear with feet' as Tori likes to call us. she'll make you feel things and bring about new perspectives and when it happens, baby, you won't know what hit ya.
