her musicality is truly OUTSTANDING, her pitch and her precision.... her runs are literally like water and she's creative with it and never overdo it.... a QUEEN
She has great potential. I just don’t really feel a connection with her. I just want more emotion from tori. She is kinda like a beautiful, astounding singer, robot.
Such an agile singer/vocalist! Not only speed, versatility, and range she also shows great musicality. My favorite vocalist vocal beast from this generation.
@@Ryan_K535 It’s actually the most prevalent in her highs rather than lows. I did a vid on her new album, you can hear it in particular on those new songs. Her belt shows her chest voice development and clarity.
It's incredible that she's always had the musicality of a much older, seasoned singer in this regard. Like Mariah and Beyoncé she holds back somewhat and does what's best melodically not just what sounds impressive constantly. You might not even realize how many riffs she's doing when you're not paying attention because they fit the songs so well.
Oversinging with runs for Beyonce is very evident though lol . I would only say only Mariah And Tori kelly knows when to tone it down and when to make it fit with the song .
@@hyun808 I disagree. Debut/DC Beyoncé was hungry and felt like she always had something to prove something but for a solid decade now Bey has been consistently holding back with her riffs and runs and been creative without disrupting the songs. It's not often you see her go off like she used to
@@OliverHeikkinen well the video mentions "EVER". So I would mostly look at the times during their most active vocal /prime time . She just doesn't sing and appear as much now in general . And her songs have become raps instead of vocal lines . But she's always been extra with riffs lmao
the truth is, any singer can literally have an agile voice (some are naturally born with thinner vocal folds) but only a small percent knew how to execute runs with good sense of musicianship. tori can literally put melisma in every phrases and it still wouldn't sound distracting.
This is why I get annoyed when people put screechy Grande in the same league as Tori. She's not. Grande is not a riffer. She may throw a easy run in here and there but she can't get with the likes of Tori or Jazmine or Brandy. Grande can't even get with Jessie J.
@@freeinghumanitynow I think people then in the same league because they are both better at different things. Tori is better with melisma and lows and mids. Ariana is better with the upper belts, falsetto and whistle tones.
Hands down Tori's ease with runs allows her to create some of the most melodically intricate and interesting improvisations of any singer. Each note is pitched perfectly even at the highest speeds, it never gets out of control, she never hits a sour note, out the hundreds she produces in a single song that's crazy impressive. I'd have to put Jazmine Sullivan and Beyonce up there too of course. Like u said for them it's as simple as breathing. People like Jessie J, Christina Aguilera, and Jojo have the agility but they're control is not always as consistent to allow the freedom that Tori has. She really is something special and I am so lucky to have seen her sing live in 2018, I had high expectations and she truly blew me away.
watch her on the masked singer yall!! she’s holding back, saving all those riffs and runs, yet she’s STILL the best vocalist on the show ever (nicole’s words and mine)
@@charfree6888 Yeah um Patti Labelle had the biggest range and biggest technique on that show alone. I highly doubt someone like Tori Kelly who is holding back will Top Patti Labelle
I AGREE. Jojo would be very close to me because their runs have a legato seamlessness to them similar to 90's Mariah. Jessie J / Brandy / Jazmine Sullivan probably has the most musicality but the staccato nature and over usage can have too much tension to be tasteful and not everyone can follow the complicated and improvised patterns to be tasteful. Tori is the perfect mix of musicality and tastefulness in that her legato is perfect, the agility is there, the intervals are pretty impressive and she knows what's too much and not enough.
nah u buggin jazmine doesn’t over run she’s always in the pocket. brandy too. jessie can dtm sometimes. the staccato thing i get but i personally like it
@@aaronnewman7573 when I say “over run” I mean that Jazmine sings with rapid and complex note intervals and key changes. I’m not saying there’s a technical flaw, I’m saying that her runs aren’t always digestible to an untrained ear. I would actually say she does not sing in the pocket, if anything’s she’s very creative and asserts herself as an experimental performer. “Digestible” runs in my view sound more like Whitney Houston / Mariah in that the runs are typically linear with even note intervals and in one key, Brandy, Jazmine and Beyonce are on a complex end of the spectrum
@@Sloppyjoey1 ohhhh i get it. when i say in the pocket i more so mean, when it comes to timing and not getting sloppy/lost. i see what u mean, but i don’t think jazmine wants to limit herself for the untrained ear... i actually think a voice like hers makes people wanna learn more about music because she’s pretty much universally loved. singers like her, rachelle ferrell, kim burrell, lalah hathaway etc. are not really meant to be mainstream (even tho jazmine is blowing up more recently than she has since like 2008-2010), they do what they want with their voices and that’s what i personally love about them but i am a singer myself lol so i get why the general public would receive tori a little more. i will say there’s also a cultural component. jazz, which is arguably one of the most complex music genres, is very important to the black community especially in terms of music so maybe that’s why we receive someone like jazmine a little more even though she’s not as “digestible”
@@aaronnewman7573 I agree! I’ll push back a tad bit solely to say that things do have to be digestible.. I personally love Jazmine but her runs and key changes can really break ankles. I’m a black male myself and I’ve been teaching my Caucasian female friend to sing and it hit different to see her go from thinking Beyoncé’s runs were sloppy to simply just thinking they’re unnecessary. Singing runs can be like pineapples on pizza.. it’s not that it’s not edible but people often see too many intervals as bad taste. I consider Tori superior purely because of her choices, in theory Jazmine probably has a higher degree of capability with riffs however she’s no stranger to an ugly out of place run that’s really just there to prove she could squeeze it in... Jessie J is a big offender there as well.
Perfect pitch doesn't mean having good pitch which is what tori has. Perfect pitch just means you can identify a note immediately without needing the help of relative pitch (like hearing a C note before hand in which case you can identify other notes because of intervals) Tori has never said she has perfect pitch
I think she puts the right notes in the right place at the right time, you know?! It's not only about runs and stuff but about diversity, creativity, impact and this kind of stuff. I get impressed because she can put notes that I woudn't even ever imagine and it fits and sounds perfectly... If I'm ever able to do half of what she does I would be satisfied
@@andreguilherme1439 Her improvisation games are just sick af. It's like in the back of her mind she has a vault of melodies, divided perfectly in their places and that it only takes a switch of thought for her to unleash those within the perfect place and time. It'd say that is an innate ability. It takes high musicianship to be able to do this effectively on a consistency level but she surely has one but probably more than just well-developed skills. Bless Tori and her undeniably holy water-sprinkled talent.
I love it especially when she combines her agility with her dynamics. So beautiful. Just the epitome of control when she does that. You guys should listen to her EP and Xmas album. Don't take me home and 25th especially slaps haha
As for me who is in this generation, Tori Kelly is up there.I grew up listening to Gospel and I Immersed myself into 90's music specifically Mariah Carey's music for these past few months and grew a love for R&B. She reminds me of Mariah in the way her runs are so precise and at times so fast that you don't catch them, but they're also very fluid and effortless at the same time. She's well connected to her different registers which is why her transitions from chest to head, etc. are so seamless. Her creativity in singing as well as writing is no joke. For many years people have looked at other artists and compared them to the likes of Mariah, Whitney, Celine, etc. But for me I have no doubt that Tori Kelly surpasses the artists of today and is the voice of this generation.
6:58 😱 I wasn't ready! Like HOW! @ 7:23 It seemed like she was distracted by the crowd yet she still managed to hear every note and deliver it right away 👏⭐👏
i’ll literally never get tired of watching her match the guitar riffs with her vocal riffs. it blew me away the first time i saw it and it still blows me away now 😨 also when she sang together with james bay on ig live, he said how much he loved her singing the song’s guitar riff and that she was the only person he knew that do could that 🥺
The fact that just about all of these clips are her holding back is the gag! Anybody that knows Tori Kelly and is familiar with her vocals knows that some of these clips are just a taste of what she can do, she holds back a lot....i believe it is because she likes to play it safe and might be nervous about going to her extremes but she’s capable of so much more! I can not wait for the day she just lets loose.
Finally someone said it! lol I haven’t come across a lot of people who can tell that Tori is literally always holding back. She rarely gives it her all for riffs and runs unfortunately. Especially when she’s singing with others. I can understand that maybe she doesn’t wanna come off as too showy while singing with other artists but why not go off for solo performances? I just wonder what’s stopping her. 🧐
@@HH-yq6ch As far as riffs and runs Tori i believe has a good handle as not being labeled an “over singer” she might be aware that if she does too much people will label her as such like they do for Christina Aguilera, Beyoncé, or Avery Wilson. Despite her amazing musicality, oversinging tends to really only impress music lovers not the standard listeners. As far as her range that she holds back with as well, i believe it’s a technique meets consistency thing for example whenever she sings “don’t you worry bout a thing” which is probably one of the hardest songs put out to sing in a while, even with the key lowered she seems to always miss a few marks and i think because of how she chooses to sing vice versa with her head voice she’s shown the ability to have some good control up there I.E “purple rain” tribute she sings up to F6 but she also misses a few marks in her head voice sometimes I.E “don’t you worry bout a thing” with notes as low as B5.
I know you kind of alluded to Jessie J being an example of when agile singers can overdo it, but oh my goodness that just made her time on SINGER even more impressive to me. It seems like she has really grown in understanding how to use her agility to tastefully embellish a song while still making it her own. Her performance of I'm Every Woman also reflects this. ALSO, TORI IS A TOTAL BEAST AND DESERVES SO MUCH MORE RECOGNITION! Her creativity coming up with these runs on the spot and musicality is incredible. Wish you included her crazy upward run from Time Flies! If anyone has any tips on how to develop a better ear like this, please let me know!
Tori Kelly's riffs are so creative and light and well placed and beautiful and just so effortless it makes me mad 😤. Like come on. Are you serious! At least pretened to try 😭.
I've always said this. All biases aside, she literally is one of the most agile in the industry right now. Tbh these aren't even her best riffs and runs, she's done much crazier stuff😭. Loved the video.
I’ve been a fan of her for 6 years now and what made me love her is her agility, tone, and musicality. She knows how to use her skills well and make a song more interesting to listen 😍
she's so creative and unique. she hadn't done a rif like the one in pyt since 2019 (in language) bc she kept changing it up and didn't need to revert back to that! she's so underrated and overlooked it's sad
*Tori's* voice is exceptionally agile but I think what sets her apart amongst her contemporaries is her splendid musicality. 👑 I'll try not to mention any specific names, but some attempt to riff and run but they don't have the skill down yet so it sounds very forced and unnatural. There are others (male & female vocalists) who are incredibly agile but are lacking in the musicality department; they riff and run till the cows come home but it doesn't complement the music and a lot of times, it's definitely too much.
You beat me to the punch! Jessie J, Brandy and Jazmine Sullivan have the most "musicality" to me in that they keep metre and are able to subtract and add intervals and jump / descend octaves at an almost random pattern and still be mathematically correct but their tone is polarizing. I don't feel Tori's quite at the stage of Improv they're to randomize the run and mid riff correct or lengthen it, but she's a cut above anything out right now. I love her Legato, I think that's her strength that makes her about the best riffer right now.
@@Sloppyjoey1 Brandy, yes. Jazmine Sullivan overdoes it at times. Part of musicality is restraint. Same with Jessie J, albeit she got much better during her time on that Nationally televised talent show in China. Tori improvised excellently: everything at 3:17 onwards is improvised. If you know the original. You can tell just how much she has improvised right there.
@@GarageStudio7 I absolutely agree. "Musicality" for me means you can execute anything on demand and improv / add or subtract at will, tasteful or not. But if you mean musicality in a tasteful sense I 100% agree that's why I said Bramd/Jaz/Jessie can be polarizing. Jaz overdoes it all the time, but when I say Brandy/Jessie/Jaz have more musicality I mean that they switch, add, reverse and double any interval the fastest. Jessie actually annoys me turning everything into a run and her tone doesn't always flatter a run lol A lot of their runs have a "haunting" feel because they don't make sense and then they do and it's like the run crept up on you if you know what I mean? Personally I love that, I like tension and release style riffs, but many people it's "overdoing it" which I fully get. Tori's tend to be smoother, pleasant, directional and safer and are often a matter of legato and agility, so I give her credit on sounding the best but I feel like her tone is overly agreeable / mainstream so I don't want unique singers to not get credit lol. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IHcLGrdGG5c.html
Tori is the hardworking singer. Her riffs&runs is so amazing. She’s the best to do it in our generation. But, ariana has the most beautiful timbre. Mariah’s voice is truly gifted. She uses riffs&runs in the best way & well placed. She puts those r&r into the song to make it the most enjoyable thing to hear.
She is the artist with the best riffs of this generation, they are clear, with a perfect tuning, she does not miss any notes, she is quick to make them, they sound too good and they are also different styles for the same riff, she is without a doubt the better in this, Ariana, Demi, Madison, or others, should ask her for some advice, Tori would help them improve (in riffs, in the rest they are at the same level, except Madison), It would be something very interesting, not in vain does their agility with that of Mariah, Celine, Beyoncé or Xtina. Sorry if there is any mistake, my english is very bad, but good video🖤🖤
Ariana too is a great riffer, she has the skills and dynamics to be like Tori or Beyonce. But she lacks the distinction between notes, very fluid, not crisp. Its the way tori uses every part of her mix, falsettos, hv, and transitions so masterfully... they may have similar abilities but its how Tori uses hers to that makes shine above the rest
@Unbiased Vocal Buddy Ariana's agility is ridiculous lol sry of I made it seem otherwise, literally just commented this a day ago "Her control in agility is so underrated. The muscle-musicality (lol) needed to change the run depending on how you feel in the moment is insanely challenging. And if she messes up she has to find a way to make to continue it and she does it so well almost effortlessly. And yeah every other time their was a flat notes hear but many of them are hardly noticeable and it's expected doing complex notes at the top her range so quickly & consistently. And this was supposedly at her worst year vocally🤷 Vocal Queen" Edit- I was a bit harsh on her ig, but putting her on the same level as demi and madison was just insulting.
@Unbiased Vocal Buddy True. If you consider in this generation, then Ariana, Jessie and JoJo are the only ones who stand a chance. Ariana's vocal agility is good because of her seamless chest-to-head transitions, not because of her riffs/runs (which use excessive jaw movement, but are still quite good on their own). Jessie and JoJo may fare better against Tori though because they have better agility than Ariana, but not better than Tori, that's for sure.
Such a Vocal Virtouso! All her riffs and runs fits perfectly to whatever song she sings and that is a TREAT for listeners. ❤ Tori Kelly - Vocal Virtouso one of the best vocalist of this generation. I enjoyed watching your video. ❤❤
YASSSSSSSS TORIIIII!!! SLAY BBY!! I LOVE ❤️ those riffs & runs of yours soo FREAKIN muchhhhh. Yassssssss My baby! I love you so much baby.😘 I’m so happy, another new video about my sweet Tori!!!😘😘😘😘
Such a talent.. like Jewel said, “it ain’t a hobby for that girl”. But she’s also so likeable such a sweet personality. She should be EVERYWHERE.. but she’s too wholesome. You know they don’t like kids having actual role models.
She’s fucking amazing every album I have every song in her catalog I listen to ever since homemade songs she’s healed my heart more times than I can count when I’m so alone in a dark place her voice becomes my light n I get through tori I love you so much I’m going to cry like a baby if you Sing in front of me like I did with Ariana but Idc it will be happy tears I lived long enough to hear you live
She's holding back A LOT in therms on vocals and performing. In the masked singer she literally was ANOTHER PERSON. Imagine a performer with THAT vocals OMG
WOW, what a voice! She’s the voice of Meena in both SING and SING 2! She blew me away with her cover of don’t you worry about a thing! That was the first time I heard her voice! I had to find out who was making the voice of that elephant, LOL.
It must be extremely difficult to try and find various different notes that compliment each other so quickly, and yet she manages to do it through improvisation, and even creates multiple different versions of the exact same run. That is a highly impressive skill. She has a great range and a very good ear.
Underrated singers in terms of Agility 1) Tori(GOAT) 2) Fouzia(she's new) 3) Celine Dion and Whitney Houston(I mean people talk about their belts but they also have really complex, agile, sympathetic runs)
@@jericyutan7961 Same! I actually used to move my jaw excessively to produce what sounds like vocal agility (like what Ariana used to do), but I realised at a certain point that it isn't healthy. That was when I discovered Tori Kelly. Tbh though, I should thank god I found both ladies, as well as Demi cuz I learnt how to sing using all three's vocal techniques combined. I practiced a lot of Tori's runs and now my agility is more natural.
Oi, who tf disliked this!? Anyways, back to the video. I still remember the first time I ever saw her live back in 2013 and her fan base had just started growing quickly. The way the crowd went wild for that PYT riff, boy, it was a *night* to behold. She still amazes me to this day.
She was already good but when she comes back with new music she's even better which always blows my mind! And the thing that I love about her is that she always sings it better live (which I sometimes don't like cause I want to listen to that version😆)
yes she has great runs she reminds me a little of celine dion's run that she is doing now she passes quickly in a fairly high chest voice while descending on low notes
Most of her riffs are actually freestyle. Not like, she does practice them back stage and do it on stage. Nah. And I just realized after trying to do one and sounded like a goat having seizure. Lol. If you also think about how you do different riffs of the same song. It's harder than making a song. I don't even know what I'm saying. 😭😂 I just love my queen Tori so much. 🥰
