Batma is 17 years old and dreams of becoming a doctor. But to achieve that dream, she must leave her family and her nomadic traditions behind for the big city of Ulaanbaatar, an eight-hour drive away. She will discover a new world that is the opposite of everything she has ever known. What does it mean to belong to a nomadic society in the age of globalization?
Over the course of an eight-hour drive, Batma will travel through eight centuries from the steppe with its unchanging lifestyles to Ulaanbaatar, the capital city, where technology and social networks are changing habits and mentalities, offering a glimpse of how Western societies are evolving.
Their mother, their grandmother, and even their great-grandmother complete the story: Four generations of women who are rarely given a mouthpiece share their thoughts.

everyone dreams that their children will have better in life than what they had. Why should Batma and her family be any different? Maybe you can go and take care of the land and the herd? I Pray that each one of Batma and her siblings excel in life and their career paths and would love to see a follow-up video showing the success all of them have achieved!

In the 1970 I went to university in Hawaii. I met a tall handsome tourist from 🇲🇳 and I was reminded of my childhood in NZ when my teacher read us stories of Marco Polo and my dream to travel in his footsteps. I wanted to do this after I graduated but I had to wait 28 years to do so. Hold on to your dreams, you don't have to do everything you see online. You are beautiful. Plastic surgery is good if you are disfigured and for medical reasons . Remember there are many ways now days to get an education and earn a living to support you when you want to farm or work from home. Being in a city, having the latest trends doesn't always mean you are going to be healthy nor happy. You have got a lovely family and live in a beautiful land. Stay close to you family and I hope you get to travel and see how others live. Your way of life is special and so are you. Keep your traditions alive. Thank you for showing me Ulaanbaatar. It has grown so much bigger since 1999, the landscapes were still as breathtaking.

What a wonderful family. I love how affectionate and supportive they are. They also seem to be quite prosperous, being able to build a house in the village, pay for Batma's eye surgery, and buy an apartment in the city (not to mention all the gadgets). It's really nice to see multiple generations living together, as well. I hope Batma achieves her dream of becoming a doctor and is able to create that clinic she wants for her community. It will be interesting to see what happens to this culture as more children opt for higher education in the city. For instance, this family seems to have only girls. If they all marry away, who will carry on with the herds? Unless there are other male grandchildren (Batma's cousins) who will take over. I really enjoyed this glimpse into the nomadic lifestyle.

They remind me of my childhood. Grandparents who loves us is around to protect and provide stability. No one ever feel alone because you can move into anyone in the village home and stay all were welcomed. I feel so nostalgic. I missed everyone that passed away. Now I am part of the oldest generation but everyone is spread all over family hardly knows each other some of use like myself lives in a town alone isolated from family. Phone calls are rare, I figure one day they will eventually stop coming. I worked in the Healthcare industry I so a lot of that , but now it is my turn to experience the loneliness the isolation the neglect that comes with growing old in modern time and society. I like the idea of the (great)grandmother living in town to take care of the school-going children, so that they don't have to be boarded. That is actually very modern. How many grandparents today are taking care of their grandchildren during the day, while the parents are working? I work in after school care, and my direct colleague is a grandfather. All his grandchildren get free after school care because he is working there. It saves the whole family (he has 7 grandkids) a lot of money. I see a lot of similarities. It's also nice that they kind of retired the greatgrandmother now, but it's still good that they have their own plot and can keep an eye on each other.

That was really interesting, not least because they are universal human values of our sense of place, our families, children, grandchildren and studying/school and progress and the older generation giving up things for the sake of the young. She made the right choice to stick with her plan to be a doctor but at the private university. My sibling is a doctor (as was my father and uncle). it is a good career here in the UK and similarly very competitive to get a place with most rejected just as in Mongolia. The capital city is certainly a contrast - 1.5m people (here in London it is about 10m now so a lot bigger). I hope someone in the family will carry on the lifestyle/ Who is to say which lifestyle is better - doctor or nomad living sustainably with the planet but at least there are choices now. I was amazed she had eye surgery - we need to stop young people having this - it seems worse over there than here in the UK. People should just leave their eyes alone. If they want to look better just eat a lot less - that is very cheap

What would it be like to live in a society where everyone looks like every one else? The same color hair, the same color scin, the same shape and color of eyes. Most everything in common with each other. No turmoil or rioting over ethnicity and perceived discrimination. Whether true or not. No wonder people gravitate towards their own ethnicity. There's much less turmoil and divisions.

I think it is inevitable given how much the world has changed. They say Mongolia will have its heyday once again in ~25 years. Its economy will be booming by then, I shudder to imagine what or who will cause this and what the impact will have on this country with its beautiful landscape, culture and customs. I find Mongolia and its ppl so incredibly fascinating, thank you for this awesome, insightful peek into Batma's life. It's so sad but heart-warming 😢

Even as I enjoyed the video of the girl taking up medicine and expressing her aspirations a sort of sadness is also staring at me when I see a modern Mangolia replacing the current one with all the trappings of the times . Shamyaprasa. 1-6-23
