So interesting for me, I have this issue after almost 4 years of gel nails with rubber base which were challenging to fully remove with drill and buffer. My nails look much the same as this lady’s after 6 weeks grow out….interestingly before my gel polish days my nails always peeled and were soft and bendy but now they tear and are harder. Delighted to have found this channel and will persist 🙂

In the original photos the damage to the fingernails looks exactly like the sort I routinely acquire through cooking. The angle of the marks and cuts are the same and appear to be only on one hand. That's the sort of thing that happens if you are using the standard claw grip and a knife, chopping onions. If I'm laid up with the flu and do little housework or cooking for a week, my nails grow out beautifully. Sadly, I have failed to become a princess despite having 50 years to accomplish the task.

Anna this was so interesting to me. I have this problem. Especially on my thumbs. They crack right where you said, often and for apparently no reason. Once they crack they then catch on everything, until I can grow them out. I don’t have any nail treatments or damage like you talked about so I suspect I have hard nails like you talked about. It happens, like this person, despite me using oil and lotion often and gloves when I clean etc. What was the treatment you suggested? IBX?? I didn’t quite catch that. I will use the hot oil trick. Is it just any oil? It explains why hardener has always made my nails worse too! It all makes sense now! You’re the first person who has ever given me spot on advice! Thank you thank you thank you!

Hi Maddy! IBX is good for nail plate damage like she had. If your nails are not damaged then adding hot oil treatments would be a good idea to add some flexibility to your nails. I would use safflower, sunflower, grapeseed oil, jojoba....

I still have a lot of damage due to acrylic nails back in the ‘80’s especially those lines/cracks in the nail as well as other issues. It was due to the picking off of the older loose acrylic at the bottom when I got refills every two weeks. Loved them when I had them though!

both my thumbs looked like that , and I had over filed too, so I let them go for a month, then put dip powder on them, and then clear gel polish , so it makes them strong and can grow out without the danger of breaking or tearing, one thumb is back to normal , left one is growing slower so time will tell

Hi Anna, Pauline in the UK. In your videos you mention weak bendy nails that split are getting too wet, so is applying cream, oils, etc just adding more moisture to make them worse.? Great videos to watch.
@TheSalonLife
@TheSalonLife 2 года назад
No, the oil usually balances the moisture. It prevents too much moisture being absorbed into the nail plate too. Bendy nails are not necessarly too wet. They are just not efficiently cross linked. If the nails need more hardening adding nail hardener is a good idea that will make the network of the cells tighter preventing too much moisture getting through the nail from the nail bed (this is how I understand it)

I have this same problem and have since I was 8 yrs old. I am now 44. Because I need my nails strong for my job and they tear so easily, usually halfway down my nail plate, I’ve been getting my nails done with acrylic. My nails are naturally horribly thin, and of course they’re thinner due to filing for acrylics, which I would love to get away from but don’t know how.

@moirae.anderson7079
@moirae.anderson7079 2 года назад
Hello again. Yes my nails are flaking/peeling at the end after only a week’s use (3 applications days apart) which they weren’t before I started using Mavala. I had been using CND Rescue Rxx oil regularly for approx 3weeks and had been more conscientious about applying handcream regularly throughout the day as my nails had become very dry and were breaking at the sides a lot. This, however, has happened for years and like one of your other subscribers, I do a lot of cooking, as well as handling my three dogs a lot, so my hands are in water very frequently. I’m retired now, but my job, in the medical profession, until a couple of years ago, meant I was hand washing every 10minutes or so - not surprising then that I had extremely dry, soft nails! I shall continue with the Mavala, although I have watched your video link re IBX - thank you - not even sure that it’s available in the UK - and, hopefully, with the Mavala plus more consistent care in general, I shall see an improvement eventually. Many thanks for your time and effort in making all the helpful, very honest, videos. We all benefit greatly from you expertise and obvious passion for your work😊😌

Anna, if the nails are too short to be shortened further without being unsightly, is it a bad idea to put a drop of flexible nail glue into the spots at the tips of the nails where they are peeling to prevent the splits from progressing further? This can carefully be filed/buffed smooth and covered with nail varnish afterwards
@TheSalonLife
@TheSalonLife 2 года назад
What kind of flexible glue do you have in mind? Most of cyanoacrylate adhesives are brittle and don’t last well especially if wetted repeatedly. That’s why I don’t recommend them. They simply don’t last and take bigger chunk with them when they break off
@wormwoodc
@wormwoodc 2 года назад
@@TheSalonLife Hi Anna, this one is Kiss Powerflex Flex Formula Ultrahold. The name implies it will be more flexible than basic superglue/cyanoacrylate, but they don’t elaborate. In addition to the ethyl cyanoacrylate there are triacetin and polymethyl methacrylate (and BHA preservative), I’m not certain if these lend flexibility. In the past when I’ve had chronic badly peeling nails I’ve also looked into dermabond, the cyanoacrylate that is used in medical practice, this can be purchased without a medical license online for veterinary use. I’ve asked a doctor friend what differentiates it from regular superglue and she said it’s mainly the flexibility…it’s used to replace stitches in surgery so must also withstand moisture better. Nothing to do with sterility. Naturally I found it too pricey to purchase for nail repair. But I agree with you that wraps etc are not a good solution, they just create new problems of their own. I’m struggling with the same problems as your two newest “Anna’s Advice” videos, a couple ridges that lead to never-ending snagging breaks at the free edge, and significant peeling on many of my nails. I have to keep my nails covered with Dazzle Dry nine days out of ten and I’ve not been able to refrain sometimes from peeling them when the varnish is off. I hot oil when they’re bare and oil multiple times daily under, around and atop when varnished. Thanks for all your wisdom, helpful advice and videos, and down-to-Earth attitude. You’re a class act!

From my experience, I recommend this person to use a nail treatment called Revuele Diamond Nail Strengthener. This product will thicken her thin nail plate. If not possible to find, then try OPI Nail Envy. I needed ages to find strengtheners that work for me, and in the end only these did the trick. Revuele has a more protective and strengtheing effect, and OPI Nail Envy speeds up the nail growth. Revuele can be used both as a base coat and top coat, and OPI Nail Envy as a base coat. I hope I was helpful.
@TheSalonLife
@TheSalonLife 2 года назад
Hi Leyanore! These hardeners simply add layers to the nail, that's how they "harden" it or "thicken" it. Harder is not always better though. Also when the nails are weak or damaged strong bond of the nail polish can further damage the nails, that's why I'm not that crazy for adding thick layers of product. Nothing can really "thicken" nail plate though. Matrix makes 50-100 layers of keratin and the nail grows along the nail bed and nothing can thicken it. OPI Nail Envy (and no cosmetic on the market) does not speed up nail growth. Nail growth is determined by hormones and cosmetics cannot make such claim. There are so many OPI Nail Envy versions on the market that it's impossible to say that they all will work for her. The original had formalin in it and it worked by cross linking the nail plate and making it harder but now the European versions don't contain it. What works for one person might not work for another as well.
@Leyanore
@Leyanore 2 года назад
@@TheSalonLife I was only referring to the fact that I was desperate in the search of a nail strengthener that works best for me. If my nails are bare they are not protected from daily wear and tear, no matter how much oil I use, they break. So I always have to have nail polish on them to protect them. I use the mentioned base coats, two coats of a colored nail polish, and a top coat. The person can try this, since they have nothing to lose, as their nails will break anyways, and the products are affordable. The Revuele top coat basically cost me 4 dollars. Thank you for explaining your point of view, all in all. Respect ❤️

Hi, I used to bite my nails until 16 years ago. Since then, despite wearing gloves if my hands are in water, hand cream throughout the day….unless I’m wearing nail hardener my nails will tear at the side of the nails. If I don’t put the hardener on at least twice a week they break like the nail you’re showing now. Sometimes not a complete clean tear but just the top layer tears. My nails all will bend, even with hardener on. One thumb has always had ridges on, no other nails. I would love to wear nail polish but cannot get them to a decent length, I’ve tried taking biotin, no difference and using ‘hard as hoof’ from Amazon…..no difference. Help! Please x
@TheSalonLife
@TheSalonLife 2 года назад
Nails should have some flexibility. If they are too hard they snap and break. Polish can look totally good on short nails too. Tears like that are usually sign of nails being too hard and brittle. Cream is good but adding oil would be a good idea too.
@stephaniepaterson6340
@stephaniepaterson6340 2 года назад
@@TheSalonLife thanks but when I say flexible I mean they will literally bend in half! I can’t even keep them short without hardener as the tears and flaking appear really low down the side of the nail making it extremely sore.
