When it comes to storm shelters I believe that America should be like Sweden and Israel and if you're going to build a new structure of a home it has to have a shelter in it
I would also recommend a escape window. Knew a guy burned alive in a basement that only had one exit those little windows can't always be crawled though.
Our building codes require an egress window if the basement has a bedroom. Not sure about a tornado shelter. But the more openings, the greater risk from debris coming in a window. I think a bulkhead would be better.
Awesome you can chill on the couch and watch the tornado once it tears the floor above you off the ground. I might install seatbelts to keep from being sucked out.
My only concern without having seen any of the other videos you are talking about is the ceiling in your shelter. Is that just the floor from the first story? If so you need a reinforced concrete ceiling above you because that timber will come crashing down on you
@@KFrost-fx7dt it’s not designed to hold contouring forces of wind or the hoist itself coming down on the floor. Have you not seen footage of the aftermath of bad tornadoes? What he has is certainly better than nothing
Dude.... it is better than nothing, it is underground from horizontal projetiles but you have a wood roof....if your house gets hit that is going to fly off. You really need 4 inches of reinforced concrete above you. Good start and amazing space you could survive longterm down there if the wood didnt fly off and you needed to rebuild
The point is to have a safe place to go in a storm. You're not going to be sleeping in it all night, or if you get hit, and it collapses. But it looks like a fun place to hang out!
We ended up selling the house and we are currently building a more secure stronger shelter in the Ozarks of Missouri feel free to go to our page click the like And subscribe and be sure to watch our new off grid solar storm shelter video series
@@KFrost-fx7dt Yeah that's exactly what I'd do in that situation, lots of potential bad weather I wouldn't want to have to keep waking up to check the weather I'd just sleep in my safe spot and be done with it
everyone should have a basement we lived in an old trailer for 8 years paying off bills just waiting till the market made a come back from all the record 4 closures with the banks in America they had to sell those houses to someone so they could get there money back.I say its worth it to move if it gets you a basement
@@hyunjinandkookie8304 yes, almost had a tornado form in front of my house years ago. We definitely need someplace to retreat to even if those disasters very rarely occur, you’ll never know.
Stumbled on this video and would like to make one simple suggestion. Invest is a roll of the heaviest mill visqueen to drape over your bedding and cloth furniture when not in use. This will cut down on dust build up. Also comes in handy if ya spring a leak. Awesome shelter
Thank you very much sir I'm very glad that you found our channel and watched our storm shelter videos but unfortunately we sold the house and are currently working on an off-grid project in the Ozarks please feel free to go like subscribe and watch our new videos thank you
thats a good ideal to keep the blankets covered. i didnt do it in the shelter ,but i did in the pantry room after you gave me the ideal.thanks im glad you liked the shelter i spend alot of time on it still working on it alittle every weekend
Yes I can see the logic with that we actually ended up selling the house at that shelter was in and we are currently building a new storm shelter on our RU-vid channel please feel free to like And subscribe and comment freely we should have a few videos of the solar off grid grow posted on our channel feel free to go watch them and soon we will be posting videos of our new storm shelter we actually have videos with the storm shelter in it but we made much progress since then
You are missouri too? I am in blue springs, mo. We get some wild weather. I like your storm shelter. I would feel safe knowing I could sleep there on nights where there is a tornado watch. I live in a first floor apartment so I have to go to my bathroom.
Please note that a basement with the ceiling being the subfloor above is NOT safe! It need to be reinforced concrete on all 4 walls, floor and ceiling!
I remember the story on the news of the family who was in their basement when the F-3 tornado hit.. their house was pulled-off the foundation & the family was literally sucked-out of their basement & up into the F-3 tornado! Needless to say, the basement provided them no safe place. Also, houses can get hit by the tornado & collapse down into the basement... thus killing the basement's occupants. The only real security when a tornado comes in an underground (concrete) storm-shelter. They can be purchased for a few thousand dollars & professionally installed.
That sounds like an urban legend. A tornado isn't able suck you out from below ground. If the basement was on a slope or something and they weren't in the below ground part, that's a different story.
@@KFrost-fx7dt Actually.... that horrifying account of the tornado sucking-up the family out of their basement was on the CBS nightly (world) news. There was a CBS reporter at the scene of the tornado who was giving the report about the family in their basement who didn't make it when the F-3 tornado took a direct hit on their house. Not an urban legend at all. And yes, they were actually underground in their basement.
I would also remove all of the junk in there too, especially the giant knives hanging up from the rafters. I wonder what damage one of those trophies would do impaling you.
oh no the celling is hung 2x4 on brackets with 2 layers plywood on top then a layer of 4 inch thick concrete blocks with a layer of sand bags we just added
Basements still scare me because the ceiling is just the floor of the house I prefer concrete cellars my grandpa built one outside of his house and we would always go over there when it said there was a threat of tornadoes and just go down there and sleep didn't have to worry about the roof coming off because it was all underground and the whole thing was made out of concrete and it had a sump pump incase water came in and a window that had bullet proof glass with wire inside but was big enough for someone to crawl threw also he kept tools down there in case he needed to pry the door open from stuff that had blown on top of the door they also kept can goods, and stuff my grandma had canned also and water but we would just take the weather radio down there and crawl into bed they had bunkbeds also but it was nice because it was kinda fun sleeping down there and didn't have to woke up because of the storm when I build a house I want a basement but I want it to be concrete from ceiling to floor and make it like it's another home have a little kitchen, living area, bedrooms, bathroom so that way if my house gets blown away I can just live down there while my new house is being built on top again but it was also nice because nobody was scared or running to the cellar during the storm we just avoided and slept down there if it was a night and during the day we would just go down and watch tv but you really couldn't here to much going on outside because he made the walls so thick .
I can understand your comment about how basement scare you because the ceiling is just a floor above which is so true and about how you prefer to have concrete around you I put much thought into this comment as I heard it from several people so please feel free to go to our off grid so their project channel and take a look at the new shelter that we are building don't forget to like And subscribe
All houses prone to Tornadoes need a safe space for storms!! The government needs to start digging more holes in the ground and securing them with concrete or containers. So senseless people have to die from storms. Tornadoes scare the crap out of me. They are always in my dreams.
We ended up selling the house with the shelter that you commented on feel free to go to our channel and watch our new storm shelter fallout shelter video series that we are working on I soon will be updating the channel with many videos of our small but sturdy shelter all built at a recycled material don't forget to like And subscribe thank you for leaving a comment
Not saying this to offend anyone but I cant understand living in or around tornado ally. Id be too concerned about if Id make it to thr basement on time and worried about my pets if Im out somewhere. And of course my stuff too.
I understand. Wasn't being mean however should something happen and it wasn't built properly who is to blame? Can't be that much trouble to find someone even unofficially to look. Simple little flaw they see will be worth it. Permits and inspectors don't care about what it is for. Just that it's safe.
It is better to have a concrete bunker under ground, if you got hit by an F4 or 5 that timber roof will go poof. I heard of 2 guys that survived an F5 and all that was left was them, tornado even took the cinderblock basement walls.
before id sleep my bathroom id look for an inner closet who knows you might like it in there. We are really glad u liked our storm shelter its much better now weve stocked it better and put in more beds. Can i ask what you were looking for when you stumbled across our video?I plan on posting a current video of the shelter soon as i get a better video recorder then my tablet.Do you prep?
we had a guy from PCEMA look it over when they came to give us an estimate for building the spare bed room under the garage floor and told us he thought the house could down on it and it would stay standing but thought it needed a better door and another support jack
it is really just a fall out shelter to protect agaist gamma and betta radiation particals from a neuclear detenation from some terrorist in the near future. it will be storage area for gear and supplies when we finish the room under the garage floor
I know this is from 2013, but i just now stumbled upon this video, and had a question for ya. I live in Indiana, and my home i bought has a basement. I do not have ANY kind of extra shelter down there. Like the shelter that you made, or a shelter that you can buy, etc. So, if there was a tornado warning, i do know to run downstairs to my basement, but WHERE do i go, that's the safest spot, in the basement?? So many different scenarios play out in my head, will we be sucked out, will my house collapse on top of us in the basement, and so on. I heard to go to the north corner of my basement, or the interior bathroom of my basement, or under the stairs, that lead to my basement!! I'm so confused!! Lol. You just seem like a very intelligent person to ask you for your opinion. I just want me and my family to be safe, in the event of a tornado. I want to know EXACTLY where to go, so that we all don't end up PANICKING!! Tornadoes really scare the living daylights out of me, it's a REAL fear of mine!! I hope to hear from ya, and thank you for your time.
Ya they always tell everyone to go too the south east corner of the basement so they know where to search first.id put a radio some water some food in the base ment and build a small cement shelter that's just big enough for your family to sit in and talk ventalate it and pour a solid concrete cap on top of it and make the door narrow and dont sit in front of the door.your not gonna get sucked out of you basement unless a f5 sits right on top of your house.
@@OffgridManiac , i think i will go ahead and take your advice!! Im hoping to try and build some kind of concrete shelter in my basement, with the help of some of my friends!! I'll pay them with a couple of cases of beer for helping!! Ha! Ha! Now that spring time is right around the corner, I'd better get a move on it. Thank you greatly for replying back to my question!! I sure do appreciate your advice and knowledge!! Thanks again brother.
Man, it looks comfy, but at the end of the day your shelters roof is literally your upstairs floor. Wouldn't offer much protection in the Joplin tornado. having said that, I'd gladly take shelter there, as opposed to being upstairs or outside.
That's how they end the days could be upon us we sold that house that you commented on with the storm shelter in the basement and are currently working on a video series of off-grid living and building out of recycled materials one of our projects is currently a storm shelter or a fallout shelter as some call it please feel free to go to our channel and watch our new videos don't forget to like And subscribe thank you very much
Tornados only last for a couple hours. The roof needs to be able to NOT be able to be blown off! Electricity shouldn't be hooked up to the house! NEVER place a shelter next to a house! Have cellphones and emergency lanterns in there.
The top bunks are too high off the ground. If the house goes the people in the top bunks will go with them. You need to put the top bunks on the floor.
the shelter in the base ment has a shelter in side it that a f 5 could hover on to of my house and it aint sucking it out ill post a updated video on my page soon so subscribe and you will see it when I post it
