I hadn't changed the spark plug ru-vid.comUgkx-6W-PtUzBRTmACHywsECak2ToY2OpjxN in my Toro 20" Recycler in the 6 years I've had it but have been good with all other maintenance. This season I noticed it sputtering a little bit every so often and just didn't feel like it was running as smoothly or as powerful as it used to. Switched out the spark plug for a new one yesterday and could immediately tell an improved difference. So I may have to make this a little more regular than every 6 years, especially for a $5 part!
If you don't have time and money like you did before covid, and you need to cut the grass, remove and clean the magneto with a wire brush. Get the metal surfaces clean of rust and corrosion. Be sure your kill wire is not chafed and grounding out when the safety bail handle is pulled and held. Don't use a plastic tie that has to be cut. Use a spring clamp or tie a rag so you can pull it off quick, just in case you're not of a mechanical or technical mindset. Clean the bosses where the magneto is screwed down. Inspect the magneto high tension lead at the spark plug connection to be free of corrosion. Install the old magneto and use a feeler gauge between .010" and .014". .012" preferred. A good name business card is usually .012" if you don't have mechanic tools. It also easily conforms to the flywheel. Clean the flywheel surface where it's magnet is and around it. Put the card or gauge between and install the screws. Let the magneto be drawn to the magnet with the card between. Tighten the screws hand tight with a nut driver handle. They can be fragile to overdoing it. Turn the flywheel by hand either way, usually clockwise from the top, so the card or gauge comes out. Turn the flywheel around to be sure there's no interference. Now, with the bail pulled and held and the kill wire attached, Retest for spark at a plugged in spark plug, cleaned and gapped at .030". If you have spark? You can put the machine safely together and continue trying to start.
I hadn't seen this anywhere else but recently I had a problem with my mower starting, running, and then quitting. New air filter, cleaned the carb and linkages. Replaced the new gas with newer gas. Same problem. Long story shortened a bit. The gas tank cap was the culprit. The vent holes had become clogged thus not allowing gas to flow freely out of the tank.
So did you clean the gas cap out ?? And did it solve the issue ?? I'm having the same issue with mine ... Fired it up for the years first cut it worked fine for half the yard I went to work I turned my mower over to a buddy of mine he finished up the yard but stated that it had suddenly died on him they cleaned out the cut chamber and went back at it and now I can't get it to stay running
@@homelesstrader7906 Yes, rinsed the cap in some gasoline, tapped it on the concrete, gunk out, air in. The mower has been working excellent now for the last year. I figured it out when I had forgotten to replace the cap and the engine didn't have any problems running. Ergo, the cap had to be the problem.
@@DK-ed7be thank you for the sound advice I did track the source of the problem with mine I ended up pulling the air filter out and boy was it nasty so I'm going to go ahead and replace the air filter and hope for the best like I said it was running fine for about half the yard and then died on me

I find the easiest way is to get some starting spray and spray it into the carburetor and see if it starts. If it does then it is not an electrical problem.
I saw on another site that you can check out the magneto using a multimeter set to ohms. With a bad magneto the reading when connected to the plug lead and the magneto frame will be zero. On a good magneto the value will be more like .5 or so.

Found this model used it was in poor condition. I replaced the carb, fuel line, air filter and it fired up but sounded like it was full open throttle when running. Mowed for about 2hrs no issues then I shut it off for a few minutes to go get water came back and it won’t start. I checked the spark plug and I do have spark, smell gas and actually got a little gas thrown on me when I pulled the cord. If I have spark does that mean the safety switch is working? Do you know? It makes full contact and clicks in. The reason I’m assuming it’s the safety switch is because when I let go the motor still runs but at a lower rpm “in noise” .Fresh gas in it. I have no clue what else it can be.
If you have gas thrown at you, there is too much gas in the cylinder (flooded). Usually let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes and it will take care of itself. You can speed this up a little by pulling on the cord with the spark plug out. This will help to get the excess gas out. If you have spark, your safety shut off is not preventing it from starting.
Dude great video and all especially since you fixed it! OOr Wait! Did you fix it? I guess we'll never know since you didn't start it on the video. If you make a 10 min. troubleshooting video in the future it might be wise to show that it truly starts and problem resolved. Still though it probably is fixing my problem so I shouldn't complain. Thnx nonetheless.

The green wire gets screwed into a the engine block for a ground. That is likely why you are having issues killing the engine, because the green wire is used to short the system out to stop the engine when you let go of the safety bar.
Follow your bale cable down to the mower flywheel. Watch the mechanical mechanism while you pull and release the bale, their is a metal arm that makes contact with a metal tab when you engage the bale. This tab has the wire attached to it and goes over to a spade connection on your coil. Make sure the tab with the wire makes contact with the metal arm when the bale is pulled.
I had a ariens push mower that wont start what I did is drained the fuel, replaced the spark plug, adjusted the ignition coil and checked the carb jet and cleaned It
If you want to know what the gap is between your ignition coil and the flywheel is a well-made business card paper of course stick it in between the coil and the flywheel push The coil against the flywheel with business card in between tighten the bolts that's roughly your gap I've been building lawn mowers from scratch and parts for 20 years It isn't rocket science It's common sense I do want to say these GTS Toro engines always do have a coil issue something about manufacturing when making the coils they seem to die. Never had a problem with a Briggs & Stratton coil One other thing with these Toro GTS motors is make sure your primer bulb on the carburetor is not torn or have a hole in it because of this happens the motor runs like s*** or won't run
I have the exact same mower and it has always given me a hard time starting it when its cold. It will run if I spray starting fluid in the carb and it runs fine after that but the initial starting is difficult. I put a brand new carburetor on it, new spark plug, air filter, and clean gas but its still hard starting. Could this also be the electrical part you changed giving me the same trouble? I doubt it. If it works with starting fluid, then you electrical should be ok (you could still adjust the gap in the electrical system). I'd get fresh gas (not just clean, but new) and try that.
It could've been an issue with the kill switch wiring shorting to ground !!!! I picked up an old Victa Powertorque lawnmower which had no spark & it ended up being caused by the 2 kill switch wires inside the carby were getting shorted out. Someone on here was showing that a secondary resistance of 13 K ohms was no good & 9 k ohms was o.k. The one I've got measured at 14.85 k ohms & still ran the mower briefly because I have a fuel issue with the carby (it leaks & needs rekitting). That maybe because that coil is the newer style with the inbuilt ignition module rather than the older style coil where the module was external to the coil.
Good video , i have the toro gts-xl motor . from 2001 i took the top parts off to clean it all for matienece. when it starts it runs like someone hitting a hammer to tin any suggestions?
I have a toro recycler, 6.5hp GTS. I believe it is a techumsa engine, but no label anywhere to confirm. But I cannot get it to start no matter how many pulls I try. I have replaced the entire carburetor assembly (which includes the fuel jet bolt and new bowl), new spark plug, new air filter, and using fresh gas. I have used a spark plug tester to make sure I have spark, and I do have spark. I have ordered a new ignition coil, but not sure if that’s gonna be the fix since I am getting spark. Any thoughts on what I can do next?
If you have replaced the carb (assuming it was adjusted properly from the factory) and you have spark, the only other thing I could think of is bad gas or no gas. If the gas is older than 3 to 6 months, try draining it and putting fresh gas in. Also, check to see that you are getting gas into the cylinder. Do this by removing the spark plug and pulling the cord several times. You should smell the gas coming out of the spark plug hole. If not, see if you can find the obstruction.
@@greatescapefarms i appreciate that info and unfortunately I did start with fresh gas after putting in new carb. And I do smell gas at the sparkplug, so I feel like its getting gas moving thru it, but still does not want to start. I appreciate ur response.

journeyquest1 This is the easiest starting mower I have ever used. I'm not sure if this is Toro's design because I've used quite a few walk behind mowers and I've never found one that you could pull start with a pinky finger, and it's already 7 years old and we've never had anyone else do our lawn so obviously it's been put through the paces. Other than the bearings that we are about to replace this mower has held up great for us.
