Toro Personal Pace 6.5hp Tecumseh- can't save them all

Got a text asking if I'd be interested in this Toro. It was complete so decided to get it thinking it probably just needed a carb clean since it was a Tecumseh. After investigating, I'm almost positive it is a low compression issue given the cylinder walls were pretty bad off and it was getting fuel and fire like it was supposed to. Can't save them all!

The reason the engine will run fine for a few seconds, then die, is your gas tank vent in the fill cap is plugged. Take the cap off, and run it. Put your hand tight over the filler, and in a few seconds it will stop. All the bad mouthing and tear down was a waste. If the tank doesn't vent, the fuel won't flow.

I always thought that with low compression, the engine shouldn't fire at all. This one fires and it looks like it might have a bad ignition coil that quits after heating up. It is also possible the flywheel pin had sheared and messed up the timing. Relegating this mower as "junk" was premature.

Either way, the severely scored cylinder wall would have not made this mower reliable or usable long term. I've had many machines low on compression try to fire. They will, but never will build up any speed or RPMs.

Hello Ellis Mowers this is a great review on trouble shooting a Tecumseh engine. Your right can't save them all, the few recent Toro's I had gotten with Tecumseh engines were actually good with some minor carburetor cleaning or complete replacement. This video really shows your patience with the time and effort (frustration!) you can put in these. Its also really difficult to find a replacement engine with the correct shaft size but that Personal Pace frame is worth a repower if you have or find a engine, great video!

Thank you, it wasn't too bad except my arm was sore after all the pulling I did on the rope. I was almost positive it was the primer bulb until I pulled the head and knew it wasn't worth going any further with. I've had good luck overall with Tecumsehs too overall, this one just turned out to be too far gone. However, I've yet to have a Tecumseh come in that was blown up!

Not for nothing, I just picked up this exact model for $20.00 with a dead battery. I disconnected the battery and the coil kill wire (green wire)..fired right up. If I plugged the green wire back on, the starter ignition has a kill wire in the harness as a back up...I disconnected that too and runs like a champ & the self propelled works fine

Just had the exact same engine with the exact same failure, it was a defective magneto coil. Easy to troubleshoot, as soon as it died had the spark test rig ready and sure enough, no spark. Fairly common failure on the LEV-120, that and oil leaks.

Yes these Tecumseh engines have their issues but I've never seen one blown up. By the way the cylinder wall looked it had a hard life and was time to retire.

True, they’re extremely durable. That one looks like it’s been run without an air filter or just not taken care of. Wish Techumseh was still around, I liked ‘em!

Replace the coil if you have a spare. It's heating up and failing.

I had same mower, buddy of mine drilled small hole in gas cap and it ran without stalling out for another 5 years. Something about pressure in gas tank. He knew it would work
@EllisMowersandmore
@EllisMowersandmore 4 года назад
Yes the gas caps get plugged over time, this one wouldn't fire even with carb spray and spark and when I took the head off and saw all that scoring I knew why. Wish mine was just a gas cap!

your bowl is running out of gas man. them carbs are junk but they will run clean your tank and line

That was my original thought but after checking fuel flow, and putting a known good carb on there I all but eliminated that as the issue. The final nail in the coffin was when starter fluid made no difference in getting it to fire. I have had many mowers that have come through here with that problem and I wish that was the problem, but when I saw the scored cylinder walls and the symptoms the mower had it pointed to a low compression issue since it was getting both fuel and fire and at that point knew it really wasn't worth fixing.

Fuel pump? Fuel line? Fuel filter? Needle & Seat?

Where does the linkage with the little spring go? I saw the main throttle linkage when I took of carb and didn’t see this one at the time. Thanks PS. I would think a compression issue would keep it from ever starting.
@EllisMowersandmore
@EllisMowersandmore 5 лет назад
On the carb between the carb and intake tube there should be a small piece of metal sticking up with a small hole in it for the spring to link to. That little metal piece can be bent to speed up or slow down the engine. The spring attaches to the metal piece and the linkage attaches to the actual carb. If somebody worked on it before they may have taken it off. I thought so too which is why it baffled me for a few days until I took the head off and saw how bad it looked. It got plenty of fuel and fire which left compression as the only other thing it could be.

Ellis Mowers I found it.. Thanks for the help. I also didn’t know I could speed up or slow down mower by doing that. I appreciate the help.

I had a Craftsman with a Tecumseh that that gave me fits...lol I would run like a top for 20 to 30 minutes & die even after a carb cleaning & needle & seat. I ended up putting a Briggs on it.

That's the plan for this one too, did one on a FWD Toro last year and worked great. Knew it wasn't a fuel issue on this one when I sprayed starting fluid in it and nothing different happened. After pulling the head I knew why!

I have a mower with a tecumseh it starts on carb cleaner and I have cleaned the carburetor at least 5 times and replaced the primer bulb any suggestions?
@EllisMowersandmore
@EllisMowersandmore 5 лет назад
Try starting it on starter fluid. If it fires then most likely a whole new carb would be the best bet. Tecumseh carbs typically don't come back when they fail even after cleaning. They're only around $10 online. If it isn't starting at all even on starter fluid check your spark plug to make sure it's getting spark, if so, you may have to take off the head bolts on the front of the engine to see if the cylinder wall has any scoring. It should be smooth, if they look like this one then IMO it wouldn't even be worth going further.

I found a toro front wheel drive with a Briggs on it on craigslist for free and it said it needs a good tune up to make it run so I am thinking about it

I've learned that free mowers typically are gone by the time I see them. But good luck! I'll always take a Briggs over a Tecumseh.

Replace a faulty primer bulb to start... stop talking and start doing the obvious. A leaky anything is obvious to fix first. A primer bulb cracked means the fuel lines and maybe the fuel filter and bowl and jets are clogged with dirt from car gasoline or plain dirt. Clear up the obvious stuff
@EllisMowersandmore
@EllisMowersandmore 5 лет назад
Thanks for the feedback. I did end up replacing the primer bulb around the 6 minute mark. Either way spraying carb cleaner in the intake would get it to fire, good primer or not. With no fire at all I was considering a spark issue until I pulled off the head and found all the scoring which led me to the low compression issue.
