Customer explained to us this mower just needed a tune up and service on it because it would not start. HA! The issue ends up being much more serious. What is causing that winding noise?

About Us:
My name is Martin. I have been repairing tools and small engines for almost 20 years. We operate a small engine repair shop in Illinois. We service / repair Briggs & Stratton, Kohler, Kawasaki, John Deere, Cub Cadet, Toro Tecumseh, Loncin, Honda, Craftsman, Husqvarna, MTD, Troy Bilt, Simplicity, John Deere, Exmark, LCT, Generac and many more brands. We work on riding mowers, walk behind mowers, snow blowers, zero turns, generators, pressure washers and much more. We normally repair about 3,000 pieces of equipment every year and look at many more that are beyond an affordable repair. Hopefully our videos will save you some money and give you the information you need to work on your own equipment or figure out the issue at hand.

In all my years of being around lawn equipment I have never heard such a sound. Plastic camshaft gears and cams might have something to do with it. Thanks,and by the way, your shop looks pretty organized and it's good to see. Keep up the great work. 👍👍👍

I was sure that the noise was the recoil starter... until you took it off, and the noise was still there. I have a Recycler, and have had the recoil starter make noises when the bolt holding it to the engine shroud came loose. Say... that's a nice blade shroud you have there. I was working on my Recycler today, and noticed that my shroud has a broken spot. Not enough to buy a new one, though.

My guess is one of the broken loose parts was up against that plastic camshaft gear. I think the confirmation of that is when you shifted the orientation of the engine eventually the loose part dislodged and the sound stopped. One way to possibly pinpoint the source of that sound would have been with a stethoscope, which are very useful and inexpensive. Thx for sharing, Martin.

That is what it seemed like but still made a partial sound right afterwards so that was weird too. Very strange

I use to hear that sound from a Lawnbiy from the 60's; but it was what you thought the starter gear bendex. Even the manual start Lawnboys of that era had one, the clip spring would distort.

Reminds me of the old pop can in bicycle tire sound we used to love

I think it’s got something to do with the gear teeth on the underside of the flywheel rubbing somewhere, probably due to the upper crank support wearing from lack of lubrication. If these engines are properly maintained they actually work very well, start easy and run great. They won’t put up with abuse or lack of maintenance like the older flat heads though, that’s for sure!

It sure could have. Definitely don't put up with much abuse these engines

Could you tell me what IN/LB range the 1/4" torque wrenches need to be within for these small engines. Looking to buy one but they are all over the place on settings. Thanks for the videos.

Normally speaking anything over 300 in-lb will be in ft-lb

What was the stick hitting on. Could that have been part of the problem?
@georgepruitt637

More than likely dragging on flywheel, causing the noise.
