These stars are being rolled using the "toro" method of star rolling. Basically you take dry star comp and make a slurry of it with water. This is poured on the dry rolling stars followed by dry star comp. Repeat the process until the stars have grown about 1 mm. Then let them dry (takes 1-3 hours) and then they are ready for another application. These stars started with 9 mm cores and I grew them to 17 mm.

Thanks Steven, the toro method is really not as hard as it looks and I've gotten some great results. For example, I rolled up some 1 inch stars last year. I started with some 3/8 inch pumped stars and rolled on blond streamer comp. Took about 20 rolling sessions but I never had to screen them even once. And they were all within 1 mm of each other. I up loaded a video of a 12 inch shell I used them in and it was one of the best shells I've made.

What determines how wet or dry the mixture should be so that the stars don't stick? Or is it speed?

In general the smaller the star the thinner the mixture (toro). Makes sense if you think about it. Small stars are light in weight and would stick together easier than big stars. Thinner Toro is less sticky than thick toro. Bottom line is its kind of a feel thing.

Can you tell me what chemical to use to bind the fireworks star beads so they don't get wet?

I use Dextrin or SGRS for a binder. And they do get wet.
